asterismohi people02:02
asterismoi need help02:02
asterismoi installed evolution in xubuntu02:03
asterismoand when i change the appearence theme02:03
asterismoit does not applies in evolution02:03
Unit193That's because Evolution is GTK302:05
asterismobut the greybird theme applies well in evolution02:05
asterismoand how it this is suppose to fix?02:05
asterismoi'm looking for a simple light theme02:06
Unit193That's because that theme is GTK3 and GTK2 compatible02:06
Unit193You would have to find a theme that works for both (or fix it up yourself)02:06
asterismothe greybird has dark toolbars02:06
asterismothere is no other light theme that makes all windows look the same02:07
asterismoany gtk3 theme site where i can download them?02:07
Unit193I would think xfce-look or Gnome-look would have a few, but you'd have to look02:09
asterismoin xfce-look.org, under the section Themes there are only gtk1.0, gtk2.0 and xfce subsections... not any gtk3.002:14
Unit193Example: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/DeLorean_Mono+Gtk3+Theme?content=145127  List of 'em: http://gnome-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=16702:18
asterismothat page is gnome-look, i assume that is no problem trying to use them in xfce02:23
asterismoright?02:23
Unit193Shouldn't be. just don't get metacity :P02:23
unknown_hi there02:53
unknown_does anyone know how to copy ssh keys to the remote ubuntu machine?02:54
unknown_I have tried using ssh-copy-id -i02:54
=== Axlin_ is now known as Axlin
asterismohi04:54
asterismoi need help again04:54
asterismoi installed xubuntu 11.10 and after i added some undetected screen resolutions with xrandr in .xprofile (as i did before in ubuntu 11.10), i select that resolution but there is no change effect, and it ask me for confirmation "keep settings" but the resolution is not changed04:56
asterismosome ideas?04:56
philipballewasterismo, hello05:09
philipballewlets look at this05:09
philipballewWhat did you do differently?05:10
jasonmchristosWhat is a general protection error?05:47
jasonmchristos [ 7108.315375] audacity[6161] general protection ip:b6406575 sp:bfa8b7f0 error:0 in libavcodec.so.52.72.2[b5fdc000+54f000]05:47
urlin2ujasonmchristos, when do you get that?05:47
jasonmchristosAnswer me first.05:47
urlin2uright go away.05:48
jasonmchristosWhen your mom comes over.05:48
holsteinjasonmchristos: audacity can be a bit buggy05:48
jasonmchristosI get general protection error.05:48
holsteinwhat prompts that?05:48
holsteinare you using the version from the repos?05:48
jasonmchristosLoading a wma for edit.05:48
jasonmchristosI tried the extended ffmpeg library05:49
holsteinhmmm.... just wma's? for sure?05:49
holsteintry converting it to something else05:49
holsteinwav prefferably05:49
jasonmchristosThat was the point holstein05:49
holstein?05:49
jasonmchristoslibav.so is supposed to do the converting05:50
holsteini mean, import the wav instead, and see if that helps05:50
jasonmchristosits the ffmpeg libraries05:50
jasonmchristosAnyway will someone answer my first question?05:50
holsteinpossibly, but audacity is buggy05:50
jasonmchristosWhat is a general protection error?05:50
holsteinjasonmchristos: its an error05:50
holsteinits not good05:50
holsteinnot too bad either05:51
holsteini mean, nothing critical has crashed05:51
holsteini would like to see if the wav imports clean for you05:51
jasonmchristosok05:51
jasonmchristosim telling you its the ffmpeg libraries05:51
holsteinjasonmchristos: cool05:52
holsteinso whats the question then?05:52
holsteinwhats that error?05:52
holsteini see it associated with some .exe's05:52
holsteinand some memory leak bugs05:53
holsteinim not developer05:53
holsteini just trouble shoot05:53
holsteinand if a wav imports cleanly, one that you convert with another application, then i think that would help you narrow things down a bit05:53
jasonmchristosholstein: wav imports fine05:54
jasonmchristosits the.so05:55
jasonmchristosits the ffmpeg libraries05:55
holsteinin audactiy?05:55
jasonmchristosI just wanted to lknow what is meant by general protection05:55
jasonmchristosaudacity is natively using wav it doesnt need the ffmpeg libraries to import a wav because no conversion is needed05:56
holsteini know how much you like wikis ;)05:56
holsteinhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_protection_fault05:56
jasonmchristoswhen you import a foreign format it just uss ffmpeg to convert it to wav05:56
holsteinjasonmchristos: audacity makes its own thing actually AFAIK05:56
holsteinnot wav either05:56
jasonmchristoswell it does both05:56
holsteinlittle .aup's?05:56
holsteinsomething like that05:57
jasonmchristoswav and audacity raw05:57
holsteinanyways, its buggy for sure in some cases05:57
deper29hey all, I just installed 11.10 on a machine05:57
deper29it went to restart05:57
deper29and I get "error: invalid arch independent ELF magic"05:57
deper29then says grub rescue> with a flashing cursor05:57
jasonmchristosI just wanted to lknow what is meant by general protection05:57
jasonmchristosi know what en error is05:57
jasonmchristosbut what is meant by general protection05:57
holsteinjasonmchristos: you want to give that wiki a look?05:58
holsteinagain, im no programmer05:58
jasonmchristosok05:58
holsteinbut, i see that error with memory leak bugs, and other bugs05:58
jasonmchristosthanks for taking the time to respond05:58
holsteinsure05:58
holsteindeper29: is that a dual boot?05:59
deper29holstein: yes, windows 7 and 11.1006:00
holsteindeper29: i would probably try reinstalling grub06:03
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair maybe, or just from the live CD you used to install06:03
deper29i'll give this a shot :)06:05
deper29Abhijit: I found this http://askubuntu.com/questions/72003/grub-invalid-arch-independent-elf-magic-after-11-10-install-on-macbook-pro-506:10

bioterrorAbhijit, use askbuntu for that kind of thing06:18
bioterrordeper29, that tells you what partitions you have06:18
bioterrordeper29, so if you dont have a sda3, then you dont ;)06:18
deper29I see06:18
deper29which one am I interested in?06:18
Abhijithe bring that page in first place and the issue is reported by someone and answered by someone already. so i suggested him to continue there only06:18

deper29but how do I install against all drives?07:09
deper29not sure I understand that07:10
bioterrordo that paste I gave you07:10
bioterrorand instead of grub-install /dev/sda, type /dev/sdb ;)07:10
deper29but sdb is my windows partition07:11
deper29er, windows drive07:11
deper29does that matter?07:11
bioterrorno, it should not07:12
deper29error: cannot find a device for /boot/grub (is /dev mounted?)07:13
bioterroryou didnt mount that /dev/sda07:13
bioterrorsda107:13
deper29mount sda1?07:14
deper29sudo mount/dev/sda1 /mnt/ ?07:14

bioterror;)07:28
deper29http://paste.ubuntu.com/73075207:30
deper29that's what I end up with when I use that second command07:30
bioterroryou have /dev/sda1 mounted on /mnt ;)07:31
deper29how do I unmount?07:31
bioterrorsudo umount /mnt07:31
deper29so then do sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda107:32
deper29?07:32
bioterrorno07:32
bioterroryou have it already mounted07:32
deper29darn ;)07:32
bioterroryou dont need to mount it again07:32
deper29oh, I see07:32
deper29so just leave it mounted then07:32
bioterrorthen mount those dev's and sys's and proc07:33

deper29*&%$&^(*&#07:53
bioterror:D07:53
deper29still no dice :(07:53
deper29I never thought this would be such a pain :(07:55
bioterrorsometimes it is07:55
deper29it should still be possible, right?07:57
bioterrorsure07:57
jasonmchristoswhats he trying o do guys ?07:58
bioterrorI have no glue what to do07:58
bioterrorI would probably try to re-install whole Ubuntu again07:59
bioterrorand wonder if it helps07:59
bioterrorsounds like a windows solution, but07:59
deper29LOL07:59
deper29I will give it a shot07:59
deper29see what happens I guess07:59
jasonmchristoswhats wrong07:59
deper29invalid arch independent ELF magic08:00
deper29when I boot that's all that I get08:00
jasonmchristoswhat you do is set the fstab correcty first08:00
deper29I just installed 11.10 on a new machine08:00
deper29?08:00
jasonmchristosthen you install grob08:00
deper29what do you mean, install fstab correctly?08:01
jasonmchristoswhat your gunno want to do is set the mount points in fstab08:01
jasonmchristossame as if you were installing08:01
jasonmchristosi dont even see a root partition08:01
jasonmchristosyou have to have a root08:02
deper29so do a reinstall then?08:02
jasonmchristosdepends on how important the data is08:02
deper29no data08:02
deper29brand new machine08:02
jasonmchristoswell if theres no data doesnt matter08:02
bioterrorjasonmchristos, we have instaled grub agani08:02
bioterroron sda and sdb08:02
bioterrorbut no dice08:02
jasonmchristoswell it needs to be on the mbr08:03
jasonmchristosof the primary drive08:03
jasonmchristosdeper29: what are you trying to accomplish08:03
bioterrorhe's trying to boot into linux08:03
bioterrorbut ends up to grub rescue08:03
bioterrorwith that ELF08:03
deper29^08:03
jasonmchristosthats because theres no root partition08:04
bioterrorthere's08:04
bioterrorhe has /08:04
jasonmchristosthe boot partition is loaded first08:04
deper29should I be setting something different wehn I reinstall?08:06
jasonmchristosyou need to install to the mbr08:06
jasonmchristosand have a /boot partition for the kernal08:07
jasonmchristosit will load from mbr grab kernal08:07
bioterrordeper29, choose: use whole disk08:07
jasonmchristosthen mount everything08:07
deper29when I choose use whole disk, that won't get rid of windows will it?08:08
deper29because that is on a separate drive08:08
jasonmchristosoh he is trying to keep windows08:08
jasonmchristosthats a little more complicated08:08
jasonmchristosdual booting08:08
deper29yes lol08:08
jasonmchristosdisable the windows drive in bios08:08
jasonmchristosthen install everything08:09
deper29can I just unplug it?08:09
jasonmchristosthat works too08:09
jasonmchristosbut bios is easier08:09
jasonmchristosthisaway you dont mess it up08:09
deper29unplugging it can mess it up?08:10
jasonmchristosnot if the computer is off08:10
deper29it is off lol08:10
jasonmchristosok thats why its not working08:10
jasonmchristosgrub wants to be on the mbr of the primary drive08:10
jasonmchristosif you are installing it as a slave its not going to load08:11
deper29okay, so I just unplugged my windows drive08:11
deper29and am now going to turn on and install ubuntu08:11
jasonmchristosyeah but the problem is this08:11
jasonmchristosnew windows have thier own loaders08:11
deper29okay08:12
jasonmchristoshopefully you didnt put grub on the windows drive already08:12
deper29we did that earlier08:12
jasonmchristosgrub isnt going to load at all if the windows drive is primary08:12
deper29primary in boot order?08:12
jasonmchristosdual booting was easier with windows xp08:12
jasonmchristoswhat you want to do is make them both primary08:12
jasonmchristoson seperate channels08:13
deper29do I do that in the BIOS?08:13
jasonmchristosand disable either channel in bios when you want to boot into the other system08:13
jasonmchristosthats the safest rout i would say08:13
deper29i'll primarily boot into linux08:13
deper29so I should not be installing ubuntu right now, but should be booting into the BIOS?08:14
jasonmchristoswell if thats the case make the windows drive a slave and add a line in grub for the other drive08:14
jasonmchristosnot a slave08:14
deper29how?08:14
jasonmchristosbut put it on the secondary channel08:14
deper29i'm a noob to a lot of this stuff08:14
jasonmchristosthe motherboard has a connecter for sata drives08:14
deper29yes08:15
jasonmchristosits a channel08:15
jasonmchristosif you connect them on the same cable it makes slaves08:15
deper29okay08:15
jasonmchristosslaves generally arent for booting08:15
jasonmchristosso connect the drives on different cables08:15
jasonmchristosone for each drive08:15
deper29the drives are on different cables08:15
jasonmchristosif linux is going to be primary put it on channel 108:15
deper29it is08:16
jasonmchristosok then install grub to the mbr08:16
jasonmchristoshow did ou get to this point ?08:16
jasonmchristosif you install linux on a primary drive on channel 1 it should boot fine08:16
deper29it doesn't08:16
deper29bioterror was saying it has something to do with EFI08:17
bioterrorcould be08:17
* bioterror lifts hands up08:17
bioterror:D08:17
deper29lol08:17
jasonmchristoswell ive never used efi08:19
jasonmchristosut if thats the error yes08:19
jasonmchristosthats what the problem is08:20
jasonmchristosthats a new thing08:20
jasonmchristosits there for your saftey08:20
deper29?08:20
jasonmchristosso you dont rebboot one day and all of this sudden you are running inside a virtual machine from someone at pakistani isi headquarters08:21
deper29lol08:21
deper29so I am at the reinstall thing08:21
deper29erase ubuntu 11.10 or custom?08:21
jasonmchristosyou are going to have to readup on the support for this EFI thing08:22
jasonmchristosdeper29: use whole drive08:22
deper29k08:22
jasonmchristosi would use 10.10 or 10.0408:22
jasonmchristosunbless you want that new gnome08:22
jasonmchristosit was built for a netbook08:23
deper2910.10 boots fine on my machine08:23
jasonmchristossounds like you have a brand new powerful machine08:23
jasonmchristosdeper29: oh so you want the new system08:23
deper29yes :P08:24
jasonmchristoswell just repartition it using whole disk08:24
jasonmchristosput the swap at the front end of magnetic drives08:24
jasonmchristosuse the first 5%08:24
jasonmchristosdo a custom partition08:25
geirhaIf the choice is between 10.10 and 10.04, I'd go with 10.04 since it's an LTS release.08:25
deper29custom08:25
deper29okay08:25

jasonmchristos10.10 has a bit more options than 10.04 thats why i picked it08:28
jasonmchristos10.04 should be as stable as ubuntu has ver been08:28
jasonmchristoseverything just works until you start installing extra options stuff08:28
deper29what options?08:29
jasonmchristoslike community packages08:29
jasonmchristoslike there are a few extra options each relesae08:30
jasonmchristos11.10 has utp in transmission08:30
jasonmchristosor 10.10 has mac cloning in gnome net manager08:30
geirha10.10 will lose support in april 2012, which means that you have to upgrade to 11.04, then to 11.10, then to 12.04 to get to the latest release.08:30
jasonmchristoswhere 10.04 doesnt08:30
geirhaWith 10.04 you can upgrade directly to 12.0408:31
geirha(since 10.04 and 12.04 are LTS releases)08:31
deper29I never knew there was a 12.0408:31
geirha12.04 means it gets released in 2012, month 0408:31
jasonmchristosstick with lts if you can08:32
geirhaSo it's a planned release, and will be available sometime during april 2012.08:32
jasonmchristosthe others are just beta tests for the LTS08:32

jasonmchristosbut im inclined to say that its going to do the same thing08:35
deper2910.04?08:36
jasonmchristosyou might have to read up on EFI support08:36
geirhaWhen you boot the Ubuntu CD, it's a good idea to choose "Try Ubuntu" instead of "Install". That way you can check that things like graphics card, audio and wireless works08:36
deper29okay :) thanks for all of your help again today, guys08:36
jasonmchristosdeper29: sounds like the EFI isnt recognizing something08:37

NeilGood morning (I am in The UK). I hope one of you can help me find some software. I have a usb analogue capture card. I have confirmed that it is working correctly by installing TVtime and connecting my photo camera. What I need now is to find some software that will enable me to record my old VHS video tapes to the computer and then make some DVDs. If I can also find software with a timer so that I can schedule recordings from my 10:40
coalwateri have 2 asc files and i want to import them to a computer so i could use it to access my launchpad branches, how can i do that using terminal11:04
coalwatercrap lol rebooted by mistake11:11
NeilI've had no reply to this after 1 hour, so I will repeat my question. I hope one of you can help me find some software. I have a usb analogue capture card. I have confirmed that it is working correctly by installing TVtime and connecting my photo camera. What I need now is to find some software that will enable me to record my old VHS video tapes to the computer and then make some DVDs. If I can also find software with a timer so 11:41
geirhaYour message gets cut off at  "with a timer so"11:47
geirhaI don't know exactly how that capture card is set up. Do you connect to it via /dev/video or something like that?11:48
NeilThanks Geirha. I will split my message into smaller sections.11:49
NeilI hope one of you can help me find some software. I have a usb analogue video capture card. I have confirmed that it is working correctly by installing TVtime and connecting my photo camera.11:49
NeilWhat I need now is to find some software that will enable me to record my old VHS video tapes to the computer and then make some DVDs.11:50
NeilIf I can also find software with a timer so that I can schedule recordings from my satellite receiver then that would be great.11:50
NeilAlthough my USB analogue capture card definitely works as proven with TVtime I have not found a way of making it work with Mythtv.11:51
NeilMy minimum requirement is to make DVDs from my old vhs tapes, but making sheduled recordings from my satellite receiver as well will be great. can anyone make any suggestions for the software I should install? Thanks in advance, I know that at least one of you will have the solution I need.11:51
geirhaI haven't used mythtv myself, but I think that's up mythtv's ally11:52
geirha*alley11:52
Sidewinder1Neil, Does the capture card have audio-in and video-in jacks that'll mate with your VHS machine?11:53
Neilyes sidewinder1. I have already connected my digital camera to the computer via my usb capture card. I get good picture and sound with TVtime, but TVtime has no way of recording the video and sound. So the harware all works, I just need to find software for making recordings.11:55
geirhaHave you tried asking #mythtv-users for help in getting your capture card working with mythtv?11:57
Sidewinder1I use Kaffeine to 'watch TV' with my Hauppauge USB/TV card. Kaffeine does have an "Instant Record" menu selection; but I've never used that function.11:59
Sidewinder1Neil, Once you get VHS, playing/recording through your computer, the next step might be found here: http://blogcritics.org/scitech/article/making-dvds-with-devede-in-linux/12:02
NeilNo geirha, I have not tried myth tv users yet.12:03
NeilThanks Sidwinder1, I have had a quick read and it seems that needs files to be present for conversion. I will read up about caffeine and see if that can capture s-video or composite video via a usb capture card.12:06
Sidewinder1That's Kaffeine. :-)12:07
Neilthanks, I have typed the correct spelling into google. I am searching for information now.12:07
Sidewinder1Neil, I don't think there's any way to go from VHS to DVD in one step. You'll need to record the VHS to HDD first. Then you'll have to, probably. re-encode the recorded format to a DVD format that'll play on a home DVD player.12:09
Neilyes Sidewinder1, I know I must copy the vhs to HDD first. It is the software for doing this that I am trying to find.12:10
Sidewinder1Neil, IF you want DVD menus and to play on home DVD players (not just your computer) look into the Video TS format.12:11
Sidewinder1I've never done that; although I have literally hundreds of VHS taped programs/movies. Sorry I can't give you the definitive software answer. :-(12:13
NeilYeah, I am familiar with Video TS. I have made loads of DVDs with Windows software. My problem is how to record my video to HDD with Ubuntu and a usb video capture card with composite and s-video analogue inputs.12:13
NeilAs I have already said, the usb capture card works fine. With TVtime I get good picture and sound when I connect my camera to the computer with the usb capture card with analogue composite inputs. I just need to find software that will make recordings to HDD for me.12:15
Sidewinder1Neil, That'll be dependent on the card; it'll need to have the compatible; sounds like you've already done that. Perhaps Kaffeine will record...12:15
NeilI am using gnome and kaffeine seems to be for KDE. Will caffeine work with Gnome?12:16
NeilI will try installing Kaffeine now and see if there is an option for recording video from my usb analogue video capture card.12:17
Sidewinder1Neil, I'm on 10.04 and Gnome; just use Synaptic to install Kaffeine and it 'should' handle all of the dependencies. That's the way I did it.12:18
NeilI am installing now.12:18
Sidewinder1:D12:18
Sidewinder1Once installed and playing, look under Television-->Instant Record.12:20
NeilStill installing Kaffeine. I will let you know when installed and the program has been started.12:20
Sidewinder11.0-svn3 is the version that I'm using; listening to broadcast news, as we type.12:21
geirhaOT. Why do you recommend installing with synaptic?12:27
Sidewinder1geirha, Since he said he was running Gnome, as am I, and he noticed that Kaffeine was a KDE app, I suggested Synaptic would 'probably' handle the necessary dependencies; that's the way I accomplished the install.12:29
NeilI have had a quick look at kaffeine. It seems to be for broadcast television only, not for composite or s-video input. Having said that, I have not yet got kaffeine to detect my Hauppauge Nova T usb TV card which works well with Mythtv. I have to go out soon but will leave my computer on in case anyone can make any uiseful suggestions. Thanks for trying.12:30
Sidewinder1Wish we'd been more successful.. :-(12:30
Sidewinder1geirha, Besides, I'm "terminally" challenged. ;-)12:31
NeilMaybe Mythtv has seized exclusive access to my tV tuner and it is not available to Kaffeine. I will have to come back to this latter. I just have enough time for a quick web search Kaffeine with usb analoge video capture card before I have to go out.12:34
Sidewinder1Best of luck!12:35
NeilThanks12:35
geirhaSidewinder1: Well, I'm quite certain the software center can manage that just as well.12:35
Sidewinder1geirha, I believe that Software Center and Synaptic are just GUI front ends for apt-get; but I could be mistaken. ;-)12:37
NeilI think I have read through everything in the sound and video section of the software centre. I cannot see anything that sounds like it wqill record video from a usb video capture card. I really must go now.12:37
geirhaSidewinder1: They are both apt frontends, yes. Software center seems much easier than synaptic though.12:38
geirhaI'm a command-line guy, so I'd probably try to dump the stream with mplayer12:39
Sidewinder1I just got used to Syn; to each his/her own. :D12:39
Sidewinder1geirha, You know what, you're right; I like how SC lists by category; I haven't looked at in a long, long time... I stand corrected.. :D12:43
geirhaIn 11.10 it's even more awesome. You can buy and install non-free software12:44
Sidewinder110.04 here.12:44
geirhaYou can see it here: http://www.ubuntu.com/tour/12:45
Sidewinder1I will, begrudgingly move to 12.04, many months after it comes out..  We old-frts are all alike; homeostasis and all..12:46
geirhaYeah, I prefer to stick to LTS releases too12:46
geirhaBut when I recently bought a new laptop I thought I might as well try 11.10. There's only one upgrade step away from 12.04 LTS anyway.12:47
Sidewinder1Other than the 'tour', you graciously provided, I haven't been able to even look at Unity; all of my systems are too old for 3D. :-(12:49
geirhaWell, if ubuntu is unable to enable 3d, it'll just failover to unity-2d12:49
Sidewinder1My main machine (this one) is so old, it won't even allow me to boot to USB; my BIOS settings won't allow it.12:53
geirhaHehe. Then if you go out and buy the cheapest notebook/netbook you can find, it'll probably be more powerful than your current machine :)12:55
Sidewinder1No surprise there.12:56
Sidewinder1I'm gonna save the Kroner that would've been spent on a notebook and put 'em into a new desktop; when the kids get out of college. :-)12:59
geirhaOh, your nordic too?13:02
geirha*you're13:02
Sidewinder1No, PA, US; I just noticed that you were. ;-)13:02
geirhaAh, hehe :)13:03
Sidewinder1It's 08:03, here.13:03
geirha14:0313:03
Sidewinder1More coffee..13:03

asterismohi people14:46
asterismoi need help with xubuntu gtk3 themes14:46
asterismoor is there any xubuntu channel?14:48
hobgoblinthere is an xubuntu channel - #xubuntu14:55
hobgoblinif you find out can you let me know - I'm sure in the future I'll be lookling for the same info ...14:55
asterismothe thing is that i had to install xubuntu and i cannot find a theme that honours GTK3 applications, like evolution14:59
asterismothe only theme that supports gtk3 is the greybird14:59
asterismobut it uses dark panels and some icons result hard to see15:00
asterismoand i'm looking for some simple light theme, like "Mist" used to be, but it do not support evolution15:00
asterismoi'm googling but can't find any and how to install them either15:01
asterismoi would be very glad if someone wants to help me15:01
hobgoblinnot found anything hard to see here with greybird tbh - but I don't use evolution - nor is there much I use that's not default - sorry I can't be of more help - I think I need to add xubuntu to my list and idle there from a while15:01
asterismothe thing is that i use faenza icon theme15:02
asterismoand dark themes (those using dark toolbars) and stuff, are wrong designed15:03
asterismoanyway, light themes keeps things ok15:03
asterismoblack icons in a light background15:03
hobgoblintry that channel - might be helpful in there15:03
asterismothanks15:03
hobgoblinthe days of me fiddling with icons and the like are long gone ...15:04
asterismoif you use faenza icons, (black icons) all contextual menus appears with dark backgrounds and icons15:05
asterismothat is wrong15:05
asterismoif you use faenza-dark icons or faenza-ambiance, evolution icons toolbar and  firefox looks different15:06
asterismolight and dark backgrounds15:06
asterismofor me, anywhere is a dark background, there must be a light icon or the opposite15:07
hobgoblinasterismo: you know you got asked what you needed in xubuntu?15:07
asterismoyes15:08
asterismoasking right now15:08

Zaragonjust installed wubi recently....where did the repositories go?...did i miss something in the menus?22:25
holsteinZaragon: you installed ubuntu via wubi?22:26
Zaragonyes22:26
holsteinand you are not able to find the 'sources' list?22:26
Zaragoncouldn't find much in it...what is menu path?22:27
holsteinZaragon: in what?22:27
holsteinthe operating system?22:27
holsteinis this 11.10?22:27
Zaragonyes22:27
holsteinso, you might be using unity, the new UI22:28
holsteinand be used to gnome2, the old UI22:28
holsteinUI = user interface22:28
ZaragonI was looking for a prog that allowed assignment of mouse keys...always iffy and not in main repositories...trying unity alright22:29
holsteinZaragon: how did you search the repositories?22:29
holsteinthere are really no 'non-main' repositories22:29
Zaragoncouldn't find them to enable them22:29
holsteinthere are some additional ones that you can enable for things like codecs22:29
holsteinbut, that application will likely not be there22:30
holsteinyou can also add PPA's22:30
holsteinhow about this22:30
holsteinwhat are you looking for?22:30
holsteinor beter yet22:30
Zaragonnot familiar with PPA's22:30
holsteinwhat are you trying to do?22:30
holsteinZaragon: you dont need to be familiar with them22:31
holsteinim just proposing to you that maybe you are looking for an app that has been removed/renamed22:31
holsteinbut, maybe we can find an alternative for you :)22:31
Zaragoncurrently use a logitech mouse with programmable buttons...best i've found.for buggered up hands and fingers...logitech does not supply drivers for linux22:32
holsteinright, so you have used an application to remap the buttons in the past22:32
holsteinand you dont remember the name?22:32
Zaragonthat is correct...that would make it too easy22:33
holsteinhehe22:33
holsteinim not seeing a GUI tool right off the bat22:34
holsteini have done something like this in the past22:34
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/ManyButtonsMouseHowto22:34
* holstein still looking...22:34
Zaragoni haven't had ubuntu installed since about 9.10...22:35
escottZaragon, http://www.ghacks.net/2011/06/28/how-to-customize-extra-mouse-buttons-in-linux/22:35
holsteinyeah, xinput is what i used22:35
holsteinyeah, btnx looks like a nice option22:36
holsteinescott: :)22:36
ZaragonI'll try both of those directions...btnx kind of sounds familiar...in available repository?22:36
holsteinyup22:38
holsteinbtnx-config - graphical user interface for btnx22:38
holsteinnot sure what that means22:39
holsteini though it was a GUI, but im sure you'll sort it out22:39
Zaragonthank you, holstein....I really appreciate your efforts...i was getting rather frustrated22:39
Zaragonbye for now22:41
Max_StoneWhat should I do if I can't generate a download script in Synaptic?22:55
holsteinMax_Stone: try again... it should spit out a file on the desktop22:56
holsteinyou can take that to your windows online machine or whatever and pick out the URL's22:57
Max_StoneThat's what I was told, but I actually can't mark any packages except for Removal or Complete Removal22:57
holsteinor, you could run a live CD where that script will just work22:57
Max_StoneSo is that a good thing?22:57
holsteinMax_Stone: ?22:57
Max_StoneIF I can't mark them for update does that mean that Ubuntu assumes they can't be upgraded?22:57
holsteini mean, its a convenience22:57
Max_Stone*If, sorry22:58
holsteinMax_Stone: not sure what you mean22:58
Max_StoneIn Synaptic I can't mark anything for upgrade, so is Ubuntu like.... trying to say that there wouldn't be an update available?22:59
holsteinsure.. if theres not upgraded available, then thats the case22:59
holsteinif its not online though, it'll have no way of knowing that22:59
Max_StoneRight. I'm trying to find a site I was linked to I think yesterday... involving jigdo and Dvd images23:00

cosmosisI am installing ubuntu 11.10 on a brand new system.  8 core AMD FX-8150 CPU with a ASUS M5A97 -- AMD 970 motherboard and 16 gig of ram.   When I go to install I get as far as  864 and detecting the usb keyboard and then it just hangs.  Any ideas?23:02
holsteincosmosis: you got past that by unplugging the USB keyboard correct?23:02
holsteini would want to see that desktop live on that hardware23:03
holsteini would pass the nomodeset option or whatever else just to see it running23:03
cosmosisyeah I unplugged the keyboard and I got stuck at sr0: detection (which occurs earlier in the install boot than usb detection)23:04
dluziusmy Toshiba L-655 laptop came with W7. I made it dual boot by  adding Ubuntu 11.10, and all is well except no battery indicator in top bar.23:04
holsteincosmosis: what iso are you using?23:04
holsteinmaybe try the 10.04 one23:04
cosmosisI am trying the 11.10 64 bit amd one23:04
holsteindluzius: are you sure?... unplug it and see if it shows up23:04
holsteincosmosis: right, so try the 10.04 one if you want23:05
holsteinthe live one23:05
cosmosisI figured it would be necessary to take advantage of the 8 cores since bulldozer wasnt shipping then23:05
holsteincosmosis: you can also try some of those options23:05
cosmosisok will download 10.0423:05
holsteinnomodeset, noacpi or whatever23:05
cosmosishow do I pass those to the installer?23:05
holsteinthey are in the live ISO... you hit shift... then you see options23:06
holsteinF6 if memory serves are where those are23:06
dluziusdo you mean to detach the battery and re-attach it again?23:06
holsteindluzius: the power cord23:06
holsteinjust unplug it23:06
holsteinby default, i believe you only see the batter when its in use23:06
dluziusit's running on built-in battery, it's a laptop.23:07
holsteindluzius: right... but is the power cord that charges it plugged into it?23:07
escottholstein, his problem is that the kernel is not recognizing the battery so he needs an acpi workaround23:07
dluziusno23:07
holsteinescott: cool... i was just confirming, since that is the default vonfig23:08
holsteinconfig*23:08
dluziushow do I do an acpi workaround23:09
holsteindluzius: did you find/try this?23:09
holsteinhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/50656/no-battery-present-on-a-toshiba-satellite-l65523:09
dluziusno...23:10
cosmosisok so using nomode set and the Try ubuntu option I was able to get to the live boot desktop...  what does no modeset do exactly?23:11
escottcosmosis, modesetting is a newer feature of the kernel to initialize the graphics card. it doesn't work for all graphics cards and causes some machines to lock up23:12
cosmosisoh this must be because I have a nvidia gtx 57023:12
Max_StoneHelp with jigdo/iso files? I got into the CD images on debian.org and searched for Ubuntu, but it just looks like a bunch of letters and numbers to me.23:13
cosmosisSo at this point I should reboot the cd select no modeset and then do install and hopefully it should work?23:13
escottcosmosis, hopefully. you may need to add nomodeset to /etc/default/grub if the installed system has the same problem23:14
cosmosisok thanks for the advice holstein and escott... will give it a shot23:14
dluziusholstein, that is way beyond my capabilities23:16
holsteindluzius: usually, i choose my battles with unsupported hardware23:17
holsteinmaybe try a couple different kernels live.. like the 10.04 live CD23:17
holsteinand decide from there if you want to just live with it, or mess with it later23:17
dluziusok, tks for all your time and help23:18
Max_StoneSorry, I know I put that in an awkward place23:22
