duanedesignholstein: philinux sent an email on the Beginners Team mailing list wanting to do interviews with some of the folks who are gracious enough to volunteer their time in this channel helping users00:45
holsteinduanedesign: i saw that..00:45
holsteinphil is awesome :)00:45
holsteini responded... and i'll make sometime00:45

holsteinthe beginner... the ones that are using, but have more advanced questions00:48
holsteinand, helping out really enforces things for me00:48
duanedesigni know channels like this and the forums were huge for me when i started using Ubuntu00:48
duanedesignplus I think the 'community experience' is part of what makes Linux and FOSS so great00:48
holsteinyeah, and say what you want about ubuntu... this community *is* awesome00:49
duanedesignsomething really cool about people who give an ask for nothing in return00:49
duanedesigni agree00:49

deper29hey guys, I'm having trouble with internet on my machine. I just installed 10.04, but my ethernet keeps disconnecting and giving me really poor speeds. If I boot into Windows I do not get this problem01:24
deper29I can pastebin my log, but I don't know which log I am supposed to select :S01:24
holsteindeper29: are you able to upgrade?01:24
deper29to 11?01:24
holsteindeper29: just the updates to the packages you have installed01:25
deper29I'm using my phone as a modem to update right now01:25
holsteincool... after that, if its still an issue, we can drill down a bit01:25
deper29it kicks in and out every now and again when I tether it though for some reason01:25
deper29kk01:25
deper29few minutes left01:26
holsteindeper29: open a terminal and run01:27
holsteinlspci -nn | grep Network01:27
holsteinshould just be a line you can paste here01:27
deper29no output at all01:28
holsteindeper29: you can run01:29
holsteinlspci01:29
holsteinand put that in pastebin01:29
deper29I did01:29
deper29wait01:29
deper29just lspci?01:29

deper29holstein: How do I do that?01:35
holsteincheck out that link?01:35
holsteinjust review the posts, and see if you find it relavant01:35
holsteinits referencing that driver i linked01:36
holsteinbut, first thing is try the updates from canonical01:36
deper29oh! didn't see that second link :P01:36
holsteindeper29: no worris01:36
holsteinworries*01:36
deper29installed updates01:40
deper29restarted01:40
deper29now it's not connecting through ethernet at all01:40
holsteinwhats it seem like?01:40
holsteininteresting01:40
holsteindeper29: usually, i try live CD's til something works, then i make a note of pacakges and kernels01:41
holsteinbut, you can try the drivers from the site01:41
holsteinor, the windows drivers01:41
deper29how do I install the realtek driver?01:41
holsteindepends01:42
holsteinshould be instructions01:42
holsteinhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/731584/01:44
holsteindeper29: ^^ thats from the readme01:44
deper29thanks :)01:48
deper29was just reading that01:48
deper29there we go01:52
deper29it's working :)01:52
deper29next question lol01:52
deper29my resolution is awful. I go to additional drivers, but it says there are none :S01:52
holsteindeper29: you got network?01:52
deper29I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti01:53
deper29I have network01:53
holsteindeper29: w00t!01:53
deper29:)01:54
deper29thanks for that01:54
deper29any ideas about this resolution though?01:54
holsteindeper29: this is where i am01:54
holsteinhttp://www.ubuntubuzz.com/2011/07/install-download-nvidia-driver-for.html01:54
deper29kk01:55
holsteinlooks promising01:56
holsteinhttps://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/+packages01:56
deper29which one should  I be downloading from there?01:58
deper29damn, network connection is there, but not that great :/01:58
deper29120 kB/s01:58
deper2950 kB/s01:59
holsteinwell, one for lucid01:59
holsteinnot sure which is for your card01:59
holsteindeper29: i dont lose sleep over it yet01:59
holsteinthe network01:59
deper29yeah :/01:59
holsteindeper29: where are you getting that figure?02:00
holsteinsome download?02:00
deper29i'm trying to install some plugins on firefox02:00
deper29it's down to 30 now02:00
holsteinyeah02:00
deper29in windows I am around 70002:00
holsteindont worry about that02:00
holsteinthat could be anythinng02:00
holsteinnot on your end02:00
deper29:/02:01
deper29all i've had is grief trying to install ubuntu02:01
deper29it's like it's not meant for my hardware02:02
holsteinhttp://www.ryanchapin.com/fv-b-4-627/Simple-Network-Speed-Command-Line-Test-for-Linux.html02:02
holsteindeper29: you can try the windows driver too02:02
holsteinbut, its not necessarily on your end02:02
holsteinand there is a driver for your graphics card02:02
holsteinit can be a hassle though02:02
holsteindeper29: i would also just try other live CD's02:02
holsteinlike 11.1002:02
holstein11.0402:02
holsteinwhatever02:02
deper29those are worse haha02:03
deper29they didn't like my UEFI02:03
deper29nor did they like my video card02:03
holsteinis this a macbook?02:03
deper29no02:03
deper29custom02:03
holsteinwell, i would do something like the link above to confirm the throughput is not as expected02:04
holsteinand then, try adding the appropriate PPA for your hardware02:04
holsteinfor the graphics card02:04
holsteinbbl... dinner...02:05
deper29nc: getaddrinfo: Name or service not known02:07
holsteindeper29: just dont base your speed on what you see when downloading something from the internet02:08
holsteinset up something local02:08
holsteindeper29: also, check out wget --output-document=/dev/null http://speedtest.wdc01.softlayer.com/downloads/test500.zip02:09
holsteinthats from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/426272/how-to-test-internet-connection-speed-from-command-line02:09
brianI am trying to set up a DoD Cac card for login to AKO. I have the CAC reader working but it crashes Firefox everytime the card is inserted or if the card is inserted, Firefox will not start. Does anyone know about getting CAC readers to work or is there a better IRC for this type of question?03:10
brianbtw: using Ubuntu 11.10 and Firefox 7.0.103:10
holsteinthis is old, but might help03:11
holsteinhttp://www.hrgeeks.com/2008/11/21/using-a-dod-cac-with-ubuntu-and-firefox/03:11
holsteinthis too https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CommonAccessCard03:11
brianI used the information on the hrgeeks site and still have the problem. I posted a question on the site earlier but waiting for a response.03:12
holsteinbrian: did you try 10.04?03:13
brianNo, I did not. I started using Ubuntu at 10.10. I am not sure how to downgrade Ubuntu without a fresh install03:14
holsteinyou shouldnt03:14
holsteinbrian: you could probably get that running live though03:15
holsteini mean... if you get tired of waiting on a response, you could try 10.04 live03:15
brianOk, I'll give that a try. I have a live usb of 10.10 laying around somewhere. I'll try that and 10.04 and see if I can get any luck. Thanks!03:16
r4yhelp04:07
philipballewr4y, okay04:07
philipballewhelp with what04:07
r4yhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/35552204:07
ubot2Launchpad bug 355522 in gvfs "DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed" [Low,Confirmed]04:07
r4yI can't mount my hard drive with this CD of Ubuntu and before that it said init was gone04:08
r4yWhy is a bug like this low?04:08
philipballewwell you filed a bug i see04:09
r4yNo04:09
r4yIt was someone else04:09
philipballewi am noot sure why it is low04:09
r4yThis is not a dual boot at all04:09
r4yWell, I have other hard drives, but my cpu makes noises when I try to have 2 hards and my cd player connected04:10
r4ycd player/cd-rom of coarse04:10
r4yI sort of have most of my files backed up from a few months ago04:11
r4yI should try another hard drive I guess04:11
r4yIt would be nice to figure out what is going wrong though04:12
philipballewthe bug should yealled that soon04:13
r4yHow do I find out what job is pending?, What can I do?04:18
philipballewtop shows jobs running and I would look in your logs as well if it was me04:18
r4yHow?04:18
holsteinr4y: can you format EXT ?04:19
holsteini would just mark yourself effected, and post a comment04:19
r4yWill it erase everything?04:19
r4yO04:19
holsteinr4y: yeah, its a question04:19
* philipballew agrees with holstein 04:19
holsteinits just, if you dont *need* ntfs, you might as well go ext04:19
r4yDo I do that in Gpart or Disk Utility, or the terminal04:20
* holstein high-fives philipballew :)04:20
holsteinr4y: dont just do it 'willy-nilly'04:20
* philipballew gives holstein a bear hug04:20
holsteinlest think about it...04:20
holsteinwhats on the drive? windows? or just data?04:20
r4y"/dev/sda1"04:20
r4yUbuntu 10.1004:20
r4yand data04:21
holsteinand its ntfs?04:21
r4yI will check04:21
holsteinif it were my system, i would want to test that drive... theres a 'disk utility' on the live CD's04:21
r4yA message popped up04:23
r4yhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/731684/04:23
r4yI can't remember where to go to post pictures04:23
holsteinimagebin04:24
r4yyes04:24
holsteinbut, i think you should test that drive04:24
holsteinand the ram too while you're at it04:24
r4yI will04:24
holsteinr4y: if all is well, i would try and check for, and apply all upgrades04:25
holsteinsee if you still have the issue, and let us know :)04:25
r4yThe window for taking screen shots was messing up this image, but what ever04:31
r4yhttp://imagebin.antiyes.com/index784.html04:31
holsteinyeah... theres a test there r4y04:32
r4yI tried to get it to check the file system using DU short for Disk Utility but it keeps saying that some job is pending04:32
holsteinshould take a few hours04:32
holsteinthats the one i would want to run, to be sure04:32
r4yOK, so what do I click on?, or do I use the terminal?04:33
holsteinr4y: right there04:34
r4yI mean mount doesn't work and check file system doesn't work, so should I try to view smrt data and run self tests?, or?04:34
holstein'veiw smart data and run self-tests'04:34
r4ywhich test do you recommend?, O, right extended which now I am guessing is why you mentioned ext, right?, Ok then.04:36
holsteinr4y: the long indepth one is the one i like to run04:37
holsteinbut, you can run them all if you want04:37
holsteinstarting with the short ones04:37
r4yFailed to read04:38
holsteinsee.. thats not good04:38
holsteini would want to get a live CD04:38
holsteinsomething to really test that thing04:38
holsteini would get my data off, if its not already off04:38
holsteinit might be you just need to run fsck04:39
r4yIt sort of is backed up04:39
holsteinand you can do that (and should try it) from a live CD04:39
r4yI am on a live CD of Ubuntu right now04:39
holsteinr4y: well, just be sure you are prepared to sort-of lose all that data04:39
holsteinjust in case04:39
r4yright04:39
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/SystemAdministration/Fsck04:40
holsteinyou run it from a live CD04:40
r4yI should think if there is anything I really need of of this hard drive.04:40
r4yI have a question04:40
r4yIf there isn't anything I need off of this hard drive then can I just jump to DBAN or Hirens?04:41
holsteinr4y: its your drive.. go for it04:42
holsteini would try fsck though first04:42
holsteineven if you want to wipe04:42
holsteinjust to see it happen, and see if it helps04:42
r4yI mean I could but will it mark bad sectors with fsck that would be kept after running DBAN?, I mean if I ran fsck then DBAN that is.04:43
r4yI worded the beginning of that wrong04:44
holsteindban is just going to do that04:44
holsteinwipe04:44
holsteinfsck could potentially save the install04:44
r4ySo then fsck will not be remembered by the computer for bad sectors if DBAN is done after fsck?04:45
r4yI think I get it if that is the case04:45
r4yI wanted to know this before once when I was doing this.04:46
holsteinthe computer doesnt have a very intimate relationship with your hard drive04:46
r4yha ha nice.04:46
holsteinif you have bad sectors, you want them remapped or whatever the hard drive can do with them04:46
r4yWell, I might as well run fsck then, but I remember there being different commandline tools for this and different options to add.04:47
holsteinr4y: check out that link...04:49
holsteinyou want to run it from a live CD04:49
holsteinprolly on the hirens CD04:49
r4ySorry I missed that link. OK checking04:50
r4yThere will be a difference in the command, right?04:50
holsteinr4y: ?04:51
holsteinfrom the hirnes CD?04:51
holsteinnot sure04:51
holsteinmight be a click-n-run GUI for it04:52
r4yI have a disk here that says Hirens Boot CD 10.604:52
r4yI made using Nero on Windows XP about a year ago04:53
holsteini dont use it, so i dont know... i use the UBCD04:53
r4yI will make notes and put them into a text file on a flash drive04:55
r4yFor a beginner like me, shouldn't I stick with no-interactive?, Why would this require interaction?, I am guessing if the user somehow knows where the bad sectors are.05:00
holsteinr4y: i dont do interactive05:00
holsteini just let it do its thing05:01
holsteinand since you are going to wipe anyways05:01
r4yWell, I might as well try. "fsck -F ???? -y /dev/sda1"05:02
r4yext405:02
r4yso "fsck -F ext4 -y /dev/sda1"?05:03
holsteinid have to reference the wiki05:03
holsteini google it each time ;)05:03
r4yI had this link I was Googling while we were talking:05:04
r4yhttp://www.howforge.com/how-force-fsck-ubuntu05:04
r4yI am guessing that is the quick one that happens on start up so  many boot ups05:05
holsteinr4y: yup05:05
r4yShould I try that first?, or will that work?, take CD out after doing the command, then I can do the loner version.05:06
r4yI meant longer one05:06
holsteinr4y: i dont think it will hurt to try forcing that05:08
r4yWell, I hope it will work, because I am running off of a CD. Well, I should try it at least so here goes nothing.05:09
r4yThank you for the help05:09
holsteinright05:09
holsteinit wont work from CD05:09
holsteinthe settings wont be persistent05:10
holsteinthats why i didnt suggest it05:10
r4yOK, that's OK05:10
holsteinbut, instigating it from a live CD is not that big of a deal05:10
r4yCan I do a quick version from the terminal?05:10
r4yNo reboot05:11
holsteinr4y: you should try it05:11
r4yUh, you mean try "fsck -F ext4 -y /dev/sda1", is that short?, or is there a shorter way of checking? then I can do the longer check?05:13
r4yI didn't mean for the last to have a question mark05:13
holsteinr4y: you'll want the ones for your format05:15
holsteinbut that looks right for ext05:15
r4yI am doing some Google searching right now just to educate myself some more on this.05:18
deper29okay, i don't know how to add the ppa for my machine05:19
deper29for whoever is listening :P05:20
holsteindeper29: which ppa?05:20
holsteini do it in the terminal these days...05:21
r4yA link to the ppa would help because we need the checksum to verify the source of the ppa I think05:21
holsteinsudo apt-add-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable05:21
holsteinfor example05:21
holsteinthen you run sudo apt-get update, and Robert is your mother's brother :)05:22
r4yha ha, Robert is my mother's brother05:22
deper29http://www.ubuntubuzz.com/2011/07/install-download-nvidia-driver-for.html05:22
r4yI am not kidding05:22
deper29I was given that05:22
deper29I am running 10.0405:23
holsteinr4y: hehe05:23
holsteindeper29: yeah, i gave you that05:23
deper29i know05:23
holsteinim not sure which driver supports your hardware though05:24
deper29but i don't know what to do with ti05:24
holsteinit was GTX 550 Ti05:24
holsteinright?05:24
deper29yes05:24
holsteinOK05:25
holsteinhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1780211 says You need version 270.41.06 (or later) to support GTX550Ti05:25
holsteinso... lets do this...05:25
deper29what version is that?05:25
holsteinhttp://www.ubuntuupdates.org/ppas/2705:26
holsteindeper29: there are directions there05:26
holsteinjust copy/paste them05:26
holsteinthe 2 that look like what i had up there ^^05:26
holsteinthen, install the nvidia stuff05:26
holsteinsudo apt-get install nvidia-graphics-driver05:27
r4yupdate after that, right?05:29
r4yI found this link:05:30
holsteindepends05:30
r4yhttp://linuxexpresso.wordpress.com/2010/03/31/repair-a-broken-ext4-superblock-in-ubuntu/05:30
holsteini dont think that'll pull in anything new though05:30
r4yWhat about updating before hand?05:30
deper29kk, I will try this05:31
r4yI guess it doesn't matter05:31
deper29thanks so much for your help!05:31
holsteinr4y: OH yeah... thats on the site05:31
holsteinsudo apt-get update05:31
holsteinthe install command is not there though05:31
r4yShould I check for super blocks first? or do fsck first?05:32
r4yMaybe it will not matter which to do first. But I wonder which will take the longest05:34
holsteinr4y: i would say, experiment around all you want before you wipe, but, i say just do the fsck and reboot and see05:35
r4yfair enough05:36
deper29holstein: said it couldn't find nvidia-graphics-driver05:36
holsteindeper29: did you add the PPA?05:36
deper29yes05:36
holsteindeper29: open a terminal05:37
deper29http://paste.ubuntu.com/731716/05:37
holsteinand copy this, and paste it in05:37
holsteinsudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates05:37
deper29k05:37
holsteintell me if there are any errors?05:37
holsteinthen, sudo apt-get update05:37
holsteinthen, you can go with what you know05:37
deper29kk05:38
holsteingo to synaptic or whatever and search nvidia05:38
deper29okay, I did those two steps you just said05:38
holsteindeper29: right, so use whatever package manager you are used to05:39
holsteinsearch nvidia05:39
deper29just install all?05:40
deper29or am I looking for something in particular in synaptic?05:40
holsteinhopefully teh nvidia graphics driver from that ppa05:41
deper29nvidia-graphics-driver?05:41
holsteindeper29: i would just search nvidia05:44
holsteinand look at what comes up05:44
deper29I did05:45
holsteinok05:45
deper29a lot of stuff comes up05:45
holsteinOH, thats good05:45
holsteinone will be the driver you need05:45
holsteinif that PPA is still active05:45
r4yI don't know what card he has, but I go to system, admin and click on additional drivers, then I picked recommended.05:46
holsteini really have a challenging time being more helpful with out the hardware in front of me05:46
deper29is the driver I need called nvidia-graphics-driver05:46
holsteindeper29: thats what i read05:46
deper29because that doesn't pop up in there05:46
holsteinright05:46
holsteinso, whats that mean?05:46
holsteinthe ppa is dea05:46
holsteind05:46
deper29r4y: that doesn't work05:46
holsteinits not working05:46
holsteinim not sure05:46
deper29:(05:46
holsteindeper29: there are plenty other options05:47
holsteinhttps://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/+build/284000005:47
r4yI have a question then.05:47
holsteinyou know what you need05:47
holsteinjust try some diffrent places to you get it05:47
deper29what is your question?05:47
holsteinyeah, i was assuming you had already looked there rigth deper29 ?05:47
r4yHave you looked under software sources to see if it is added there?05:47
holsteinin 'restricted drivers'05:47
deper29yeah, I did. restricted drivers?05:48
r4yNo, go to , your goning to kill me05:48
deper29r4y: where in software sources05:49
r4ygo to system, preferences. main menu, then you have to find it05:49
deper29i'm in software sources05:49
deper29where in there should I be looking05:49
r4yit needs to be added to system admin software sources05:49
holsteinits added in the sources... the PPA might be dead05:50
r4yO, you are05:50
holsteini didnt check it05:50
deper29?05:50
r4yI think it's authentication05:50

deper29well, not when i'm trying to get this to work anyway06:05
bioterrorram doesnt speed fsck06:05

r4yO, sorry I didn't read this:06:12
r4ybioterror helped me so much last night06:12
r4yOK, sorry06:12

deper29he helped me find out that 11.10 was not for me lol06:13
deper29nonetheless06:14
deper29saved me a headache06:14
r4yI haven't tried 11.1006:14
r4yWhy?06:14
r4yThat such a vague short question which is so easy to ask. I remember seeing someone asking that as a troll comment under a youtube video. He asked in response why do you keep asking why for all the videos I comment on?06:16
deper2911.10 really doesn't like my efi06:16
deper29lol06:16
r4yIt's crazy, I don't see the point in trolling06:17
r4yWell, I sort of understand, but it's not for me06:17
r4yHow might I help you?06:17
deper29me?06:18
r4yYes06:18
deper29i'm waiting for nvidia drivers to install :P06:18
r4yO, I hope it works out for you06:19
r4yI should run fsck06:19
r4yI am reading fsck's manpage06:20
r4yAre you around bioterror?06:23
bioterrorI am06:23
deper29doesn't seem to have worked :(06:23
r4yWhat do you suggest for option on fsck?06:24
r4yI meant options06:24
r4yA link said: "fsck -F ext4 -y /dev/sda1" well I mean I rewrote what they had06:24
bioterrormyst -a06:25
bioterrormostly06:25
r4yI was reading that option thinking where is the -p option on this manpage?06:26
bioterrorit's in 'fsck --help'06:26
r4yAnyways, I was asking holstein if the fsck that is run on reboot that is quick can be done without rebooting. Is this the same?06:27
bioterrorwhat06:27
bioterrorit's the same ;)06:28
bioterrorbut the one you do on boot is done before mounting /06:28
bioterror;)06:28
bioterrorand it's always suggested to do fsck on umounted partition/drive06:28
r4yWill it be as quick, becaus I don't remember this being quick at all, then again it might have been one of the other file system checking tools I used06:29
bioterrorit's quick if you dont have problems :)06:29
r4yI should show you this first then06:30
r4yhttp://imagebin.org/18310206:31
r4yhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/731684/06:31
r4yOne was from earlier06:31
r4yIf a job is pending can I run fsck?06:32
r4yI should say that most of what's on this hard drive is backed up, so I will not hold this against you.06:34
r4yI wouldn't any06:34
r4yI meant I wouldn't anyway06:35
r4yble, ble ble ble, lol, sorry for my bad typing.06:35
r4yI am googling that question. But there is no question, lol06:38
AbhijitO.o06:38
Chacioushi06:38
r4ymount |grep /dev/sda didn't show anything06:39
r4yhello06:39
Chacioushope everyone is doing good06:39
r4yI am OK06:39
Chaciousprobably going to delete the windows 8 dev preview off my virtual machine06:40
Chaciousnot really digging the whole metro thing, and the fact to get the original start menu back u gotta edit the registry06:40
r4yI haven't tried to dual boot Windows with Linux at all and I haven't tried anything past Window XP06:42
r4yNot that I don't want to06:42
r4yHow is Windows 7?06:43
bioterrorI like metro things, I get sea sick in busses06:43
ChaciousI like 706:43
Chacioususually when i get a windows machine i strip out all the "good looking things" and tell it to customize for best performance, but I kept aero enabled on 7 and im liking it more than xp06:44
ChaciousI like the idea of metro, but not the implementation how microsoft wants you to use it, needs to be optional06:44
Chaciousyou hit windows key and the whole screen is taken up06:44
Chaciousblah06:44
Chaciousim sticking with 7 and ubuntu06:45
Abhijitbuntu rocks06:45
Chaciousyup yup06:46
Chacioushave it as the sole os on my old laptop06:46
Chacioushave it setup as a boinc machine and server06:46
Abhijitgood06:46
Chaciousruns better than xp when i had that installed06:47
Chaciousneed to put more memory in it, not like a bad need but it would help06:47
Chaciousit came with 256 mb and I added a 1gb stick a few years ago06:48
Chaciousubuntu runs fine with only a gig and a quarter in it06:48
Chaciousits pritty old laptop lol only 1.4ghz celeron m cpu06:48
Abhijiti nevere had any major problems with buntu. i love ikt06:49
Abhijitit06:49
bioterrorI have problems with upstart and plymouth06:49
Chaciousonly issues iv ever had with linux *older versions* was drivers working "out of the box"06:49
Chaciouswhats upstart and plymoth?06:49
Abhijitbioterror, you sucks06:50
Abhijit:-p06:50
bioterrorAbhijit, I know, but my wife enjoys06:50
bioterrorand so do you ;)06:50
bioterrorChacious, those are things that does some "magic" on boot06:51
r4yha ha06:51
Chaciousupstart sounds like some kind of utility but plymoth lol06:51
r4ywhat a great friendship06:52
Chaciousgotta grab a drink06:52
r4ySo I had this same question, can I stop the job that is pending on my hard drive?, And now can I run fsck which I think this link vaguely answer yes to:06:54
r4yhttp://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/new-to-ubuntu-and-having-problems-with-hd-858664/06:54
bioterroryou should run fsck on boot for that drive if it's your / drive06:54
r4yanswer should have be asnwers06:54
r4yI am on a live cd of ubuntu06:55
bioterrorthen you can fsck it06:55
r4yOK, sorry for all the questions06:55
bioterrorjust close file browsers and stuff like that06:55
r4yRight06:55
r4yThank you for the help06:56
r4yCan I use chatzilla, Firefox doesn't require being open06:56
r4yJust don't use youtube I am guessing and so on06:57
r4yI will try not to get in the way here. Thank you for the help bioterror06:57
bioterrorless you ask in here, better it is for yourself?06:59
bioterrortake it as you're learning06:59
r4yI read the manpage for fsck06:59
r4yrunning07:00
r4yUm, what did I not do right?07:01
r4y"fsck -F ext4 -y /dev/sda1"07:01
r4yUsage:07:01
r4yIt says and so forth07:02
r4yhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/731764/07:03
bioterrordrop that -F ext4 off07:04
bioterroruse command: fsck.ext407:04
r4yOK, it was from a website07:05
bioterror% fsck.ext4                                                                                                    .:8:38:12 on 11-11-08:.07:05
bioterrorcompleting external command07:05
bioterrorfsck           fsck.cramfs    fsck.ext2      fsck.ext3      fsck.ext4      fsck.ext4dev   fsck.jfs       fsck.minix     fsck.reiserfs  fsck.xfs07:05
bioterror;)07:05
r4yO oops07:06
r4ySo should it be "fsck.ext4 -y /dev/sda1"07:06
bioterrorthat could work getter07:06
bioterrorgive it a try07:06
geirhafsck syntax differs between systems. Looks like you found a page about solaris fsck07:07
r4yI had to run it with sudo but then07:07
r4yDevice or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda1 Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?07:08
bioterrorsudo is a correct way07:08
r4yOK07:08
bioterrorr4y, do you have it mounted?07:08
bioterrorin a file browser07:08
r4yNo07:08
bioterroris your terminal in /media/something07:08
bioterrorpwd07:08
bioterrortells you where you are :D07:08
r4yI posted info easlier to confirm it's not mounted07:09
r4yI will look again07:09
bioterrormount07:09
bioterrortells you what you have mounted07:09
r4ymount |grep /dev/sda didn't show anything07:11
r4ydoe07:12
r4yI need to chang that07:12
r4ymount |grep /dev/sda1 didn't say anything07:12
geirhasudo fuser -v /dev/sda107:13
r4yI tried "fsck ext4 -y /dev/sda1" and it didn't work07:14
r4yCannot stat file /proc/4318/fd/28: Stale NFS file handle07:14
r4ySo I meant that to say that ""fsck.ext4 -y /dev/sda1" is the only one of the 2 commands that will work if I can get this to work07:15
r4yI wonder, can I go in an delete the files I don't want some how?, or will this not help?07:17
r4yI meant through the terminal07:18
r4yI am guessing not. Then should I DBAN?07:19
r4yThis was the message from before which I googled07:21
r4yDBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending07:21
r4yAlso when I tried to boot before that it said init was gone07:22
r4yI had already said that, but I am not sure if you saw that earlier because you weren't typing here at the time I think07:23
r4yhttp://bbs.archbang.org/viewtopic.php?id=92207:25
bioterrorarchbang :G07:26
r4ySo what ever he did will not work for me?, since he can also mount using sudo07:29
bioterrorsudo umount /dev/sda107:29
bioterrordoes it work for you?07:30
r4yumount: /dev/sda1: not mounted07:30
geirhaAnd fuser didn't output anything?07:31
r4yWhere was that command?07:32
r4yI used it07:32
r4yI know I did07:32
r4yCannot stat file /proc/4318/fd/28: Stale NFS file handle07:32
bioterrorps aux |grep 431807:33
geirhaAlso, are you sure the filesystem is ext4?  Just running   sudo fsck /dev/sda1   should autodetect the filesystem and run the appropriate command.07:34
r4yhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/731782/07:34
r4yhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/731784/07:35
bioterrorsudo kill -9 431807:35
bioterror:)07:35
bioterrorand then run that fsck again07:35
bioterrorKILL IT WITH FIRE!07:35
geirhaPreferably without -907:36
r4yIt says the same07:36
r4yshould I check system monitor?, I was going to earlier but I forgot to07:37
bioterrorno07:37
bioterrornautilus is keeping that fs busy07:38
r4yHow come I have 8 bash command processes going but only 2 terminal windows open?07:39
bioterror:o07:40
bioterrorhmmm07:40
bioterrorI would probably boot into single user mode07:40
bioterrorwith live media07:40
bioterrorand then run fsck07:40
r4yum, this same cd?07:41
r4yI have other versions of ubuntu on cd as well07:41
bioterroryeah, rescue mode07:41
bioterroror what's that07:41
r4yIs that different from loading this cd the way I did coming here?07:42
r4yWill, I need to make a cd for this?07:43
bioterrorno?07:43
r4y??07:43
bioterrorhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecoveryMode07:44
r4yinitframs or something like that was what came up when I tried recovery. Is that the same?, Can I use the command you guys to use for running fsck?07:46
bioterroryes07:47
r4yI know that recovery didn't work like it normally has before for me. OK, then I will try sudo fsck /dev/sda1 ther07:47
bioterroryes07:48
r4yNo pen, I will write this down and try very soon. Thank you for the help07:49
r4yI have a pencil. Let there be lead.07:51
r4ygot it, I will see you later07:51
r4ybye :) /07:51
M0hiAhhh! missed Andrew :[08:51
bioterrorbut you have me!08:51
M0hilol08:53
r4yHello, I found this:11:45
r4yhttp://ubuntu-rescue-remix.org/node/51911:45
r4yI want to install it on a USB drive11:45
r4yI am on a live cd11:45
r4yI am currently downloading it11:47
sattu94r4y: do you already have Ubuntu?11:51
sattu94r4y: installed?11:51
r4yYes, I guess I will need to get on my other hard drive.11:52
sattu94r4y: So are you in Ubuntu now ?11:52
r4ythe live cd11:52
r4yyes11:52
sattu94r4y: You booted from the liveCD?11:52
r4yyes11:52
sattu94r4y: what Ubuntu version are you using?11:53
r4yI also have 2 other hard drive with Ubuntu on them11:53
r4y10.1011:53
r4yAll the way11:53
sattu94Go to System->Administration->USB Startup Disk Creator11:54
r4y3 hard drives with Ubuntu 10.10 on them all but on of them is failing11:54
r4yOK11:54
sattu94r4y: now once the .iso that you are downloading is finished. Write it to a USB drive using the Startup Disk Creator. Make sure you backup any data from the pen-drive, that you don't want to lose.11:56
r4yThank you I will11:56
r4yI am confused. The top says source disc image (.iso) or CD which is the live CD I am running, the only current options I have are other which is for this CD, erase disk which is for my pen drive and that's it.12:01
r4yI am suppose to choose other then open up the file I am downloading12:02
r4yOK, it's downloaded12:02
r4yOK, never mind I got it now12:03
r4yI didn't see the scroll bar12:03
r4yrather scroll bars12:03

ashickur-noor@sattu94 thnx12:13
r4yWe talk as well. Sharing is fine12:13
r4yIt took me a long time to finally get how to use avidemux the video editor. I didn't know that I had to encode the video and audio for most things12:14
r4yThe first part of a video would usually be black for the first 3 seconds without encoding the video and audio12:17
r4yas well as other problems12:17
r4yI went away for a little while12:26
r4ySo what do you have to share?12:26

r4yHello14:27
hobgoblinwb r4y14:27
r4yHow do I find out which hard drive is which for sure?14:27
r4yone is around 100 or so GBs and the other is around 300 GB or less14:28
hobgoblinsudo fdisk -l14:28
hobgoblinfrom a terminal - that's a lower case L - or you could look in nautilus14:29
r4yI first need to install udo for a sec14:29
hobgoblinwhat is udo?14:30
holsteinudo - universal document - text processing utility ??14:30
r4yIDK, but it said it was needed14:30
holsteinit?14:30
hobgoblinfound it holstein14:30
holstein!info udo14:30
holsteinhmmm14:30
hobgoblinmmm r4y did you do udo fdisk -l ?14:30
r4yNo14:31
r4yO, yes I did14:31
r4yoops14:31
r4yI will just wait14:31
hobgoblin:)14:31
r4yhmp lols14:31
holsteinsudo fdisk -l is the way to go14:31
holsteinthat reports right there in the terminal... no need to wait14:32
holsteinudo is news to me14:32
hobgoblinr4y: if you did it in a terminal then sudo apt-get remove --purge udo14:32
hobgoblinyea new one on me too holstein :)14:32
r4yI have been trying to run "sudo fsck /dev/sda1", but I couldn't because this hard drive has been running some process which I was trying to do from a LiveCD14:33
r4ythen14:33
holsteinr4y: yeah... see, you just get a live CD... and sudo tell it to fsck14:33
r4yI tried to use recovery mode to get to a proper shell14:34
hobgoblinunless swap is on then it might complain - sudo swapoff -a14:34
holsteinif it wont, then tell us the erro messages14:34
holsteinerror*14:34
holsteinr4y: the terminal from a live CD is 'proper'14:34
holsteinr4y: if you use recovery mode, then thats *not* the live CD14:35
r4ywhich bioterror was trying to get me to, but under grub and under initramfs but it didn't work14:35
r4yThings have changed though14:35
r4yI made sure another hard drive that has Ubuntu on it works then I set that as master and the bad one as slave and there is no longer a process running that makes running fsck not work14:36
r4yNext to go sudo apt-get remove --purge udo14:36
holsteinr4y: when you boot a live CD, you can mount or unmount the drives in question, and fsck or whatever them14:36
r4yIt's still not done installing14:37
holsteinr4y: it?14:37
holsteinim not clear on what you are talking about14:37
r4yudo14:37
holsteinwhy did you install that?14:37
hobgoblinoh lordy lou - was there a lot of dependencies14:37
hobgoblinholstein: error with sudo = udo blah tells you to install udo :)14:38
r4yI tried using the live cd for fsck and it wouldn't work because a process was running on the hard drive.14:38
r4yit was pending14:38
hobgoblinif it's still installing I'd say there is a problem - udo that is14:38
r4yWell it's unpacking14:38
holsteinsure, but what udo for?14:39
holsteinwhy are we installing udo?14:39
holsteinr4y: if you sudo tell it to run, then it *should* run... if it doesnt, we need to look at the exact message14:39
r4yHow do I skip it. I don't think it is anything14:39
holsteinagain, if theres nothing on the drive, just wipe it, and then test or whatever14:40
holsteini wouldnt lose sleep over it14:40
r4yIt's cool. I can do this with or without you14:40
r4ybut I would rather have help, but it's cool14:40
holsteinsure... im not trying to be abreasive14:40
holsteinabrasive*14:41
r4yI am not mad14:41
holsteinim just thinking, you have been trying to fsck that drive for at least 10 hours that im aware of14:41
holsteinyou might want to consider 'plan b'14:41
r4yI might want to try this first considering plan a might have opened14:42
holsteinwell, your driver could be failing14:42
holsteindrive*14:42
r4yI am aware, as you I think have said before. If it doesn't no big deal14:43
r4yIt just means 3 months of lost time for me14:43
r4yI am looking in Disk Utility and I think it is /dev/sdb114:44
r4yI just did sudo fdisk -l and it says the same.14:45
r4yThank you both for the help14:45
r4yI really didn't mean to be rude, I can't turn back time and change things14:46
=== hardtack_ is now known as hardtack
r4yI think -a was suggested as good option to add to fsck14:48
r4yI took a break so you know14:49
geirhaOnly if you are checking more than one filesystem at the same time14:50
holsteinr4y: no worries... and you are doing a great job there diagnosing... i just hate to see you waste time if i can make a suggestion that will save you some :)14:51
r4yThat's mentioned at the top, but at the bottom it's the file system. They should consider rewrite these14:51
r4yI understand. You are absolutely right in your logic14:52
r4yThank you for helping. It is really nice that people like you are around14:52
r4yWhat about option -a he obviously spotted under -s14:53
holsteini always reference the wiki, each time14:53
holsteini dont know the flags right 'off my hat'14:54
r4yGreat idea, I will be back14:54
holsteini also use the tools from that live CD i mentioned14:54
holsteinhttp://www.ultimatebootcd.com/14:54
holsteini would assume the one you mentioned has some tools too, if not the same ones14:54
holsteinhirens?.. i think thats the one you like to use14:55
r4yIt's one I downloaded to try out.14:56
r4yI actually only used DBAN for something useful out of the 214:56
r4ybookmarked14:57
r4yWhat about this coomand:14:57
r4yshutdown -Fr now14:57
r4ywill it check both hard drives14:57
r4yI found this link14:59
r4yhttps://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fsck14:59
r4yI forgot -y was the one mentioned15:00
r4yOK, so here it is I think:15:00
r4ysudo fsck -y /dev/sdb115:00
holsteini havent tride the -Fr flags15:01
holsteintried*15:01
holsteini references the man page to see what the -y flag is15:02
r4yI can't seem to find that one15:02
holsteinthe man page?15:02
r4yFor  some filesystem-specific checkers, the -y option will cause               the fs-specific fsck to  always  attempt  to  fix  any  detected               filesystem corruption automatically.15:03
holsteinhttp://linux.die.net/man/8/fsck15:03
r4yso instead of -a I should use -y. Well here goes nothing then15:04
holsteinr4y: depends15:04
holsteinits for 'some filesystem-specific checkers'15:05
r4yhmm15:05
r4yext415:05
r4yThat's what I have15:05
geirhaI prefer using it interactively15:09
ashickur-noorHi there15:09

r4yI want to say that this filesystem is unmounted15:14
ashickur-noorhobgoblin: ok15:14
geirhaashickur-noor: Type the first two or three letters of their nick and hit the TAB-key (possibly multiple times) to get the nick completed.15:14
hobgoblinashickur-noor: that worked - I noticed that :)15:15
ashickur-noorgeirha: ya it's work15:15
geirha:)15:15
ashickur-noorthnx15:15
r4yI think I am going with "sudo fsck.ext4 -y /dev/sdb1" as it seems to be logical to me, but it wouldn't hurt to try touch /forcefcsk and shutdown -rF now first15:18
r4yOf, I see. You mentioned -rF15:19
r4yOK, I will be back15:19
r4yO no, O ya15:19
r4yWere is the cool aid guy anyways?15:19

deper29hey guys, I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10 64 bit. When I go to install from the CD I get: [1.4429011] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)15:57
holsteindeper29: i would either do 10.04, or 11.1016:13
holsteinpersonally16:13
deper29holstein: I'm on 10.04, but still haven't had luck getting my nvidia drivers going16:15
holsteinhttp://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-kernel-70/kernel-panic-not-syncing-vfs-unable-to-mount-root-fs-on-unknown-block-2-0-a-688150/ makes me think its a kernel issue16:15
holsteindeper29: 10.04 is your best shot16:15
holsteini wouldnt bail on that quite yet16:15
deper29okay :)16:15
holsteinyou can go and download .deb files kind of like you would download .exe's and insatll them16:16
holsteindeper29: i did this once with nvidia... i used a knoppix live CD and the desktop looked great... os i just grabbed the xorg.conf file from that live instance, and put it in the ubuntu install i was uing16:17
holsteinusing*16:17
holsteinthat was 10.0416:17
holsteinsame kind of thing... the resolution was odd16:17
deper29lol16:17
deper29I'm going to give this .deb a shot16:17
holsteini have since aquired the skill to get the proprietary driver going though16:18
deper29https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/+build/284000016:18
ashickur-noorholstein:  is it works? knoppix conf file in Ubuntu?16:18
deper29which one would I take there?16:18
holsteinashickur-noor: buntu will read them if you put one im place16:18
deper29because I notice they say i386, but I have 6416:18
holsteinyeah, that'll be the issue16:19
deper29wait, I thought I had 6416:19
holsteinthats probably whats up with that PPA16:19
holsteinnow that you mention it16:19
deper29uname -ar right?16:19
holsteinwhy are you using 64bit?16:19
deper29I have a 64 bit system16:19
holsteinright, but do you have any reason?16:20
deper29I don't think so16:20
holsteinhow much memory do you have?16:20
deper298 GB16:20
holsteinOK16:20
holsteinyou should be running 6416:20
deper2932 wouldn't use that all, right?16:20
holsteinright16:21
deper29when I run uname -r I see x86_6416:21
deper29that is 64?16:21
holsteini have 64bit on that machine i was talking about16:21
holsteindeper29: right16:21
deper29ah16:21
holsteinyou have 64bit, not compatible with that PPA you are trying to use16:21
holsteinhence, the issue16:21
deper29gotcha16:21
deper29:(16:21
holsteini would check out http://www.unixmen.com/software/1365-nvidia-2601926-driver-for-linux-is-released-installation-instructions-and-ppa-included16:22
holsteindo the 'manual'16:22
holsteinhttp://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-amd64-260.19.29-driver.html for example16:22
deper29doesn't support my card it says16:23
deper29GeForce 550 Ti16:23
deper29*GeForce GTX 550 Ti16:23
holsteinnot sure what to tell you16:24
holsteini mean, id probably try it, or look around on the nvidia site16:24
deper29i'll give this a shot :)16:24
deper29you've been a great help thus far16:24
holsteinor try 10.04 32bit with a PAE kernel16:24
holsteinto support the 8 gigs of ram16:24
holsteinbut, i dont like that option16:24
holsteindeper29: http://www.raiden.net/node/51216:25
holsteinhttp://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Hardware/nVidia-Linux-Display-Driver-AMD64-EM64T-11290.shtml16:26
holsteinthat site states your hardware specifically16:26
deper29I see that16:26
deper29so get the driver from that second link you sent me?16:27
holsteini wish i could say "sure, and all will be well"16:27
deper29lol16:27
holsteinbut, you'll just have to try it16:27
deper29but give er a shot eh?16:27
holsteinwithout the hardware in front of me... its hard to say16:27
holsteini mean, it says 64bit, and for you device16:28
holsteini would try it16:28
holsteinor put together a custom xorg.conf16:28
deper29I definitely don't know how to do that16:28
holsteingood luck deper29 ... gotta run16:30
deper29thanks for your help again, holstein16:30
deper29:)16:30
deper29hey, I am trying to install an Nvidia driver. When I go to install it, I get a window that says I appear to be running an X server and to exit X before installing. How do I do that?16:38
hobgoblindeper29: from the additional driver/hardware app in ubuntu - or are you trying to install one from nvidia16:41
deper29i'm trying to install one from nvidia16:43
deper29there is nothing in the additional driver app in system admin16:43
hobgoblinin what version of ubuntu16:43
hobgoblinI'm trying to find what I used many moons ago ...16:44
deper2910.0416:44
deper29thanks :)16:44
hobgoblindeper29: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual - once you have everything needed - the bit you are currently trying to deal with is at the bottom (ish)Install the Driver and just above there the command to stop gdm16:45
deper29sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop ?16:46
hobgoblinyou'll want to Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to a shell - then do the shutdown install restart16:46
hobgoblinyea - but I've seen it go wrong doing this deper2916:47
deper29what might you suggest?16:47
deper29and what can go wrong?16:48
hobgoblinnot too sure tbh if there's no driver there for you :( I've sort of been following you and holstein - at least vaguely16:48
hobgoblinwell - you could have to revert to nv or whatever you're using at present16:48
deper29i'm gonna give this a shot16:49
deper29fingers crossed I guess16:49
hobgoblindeper29: if you follow that page  - please print it out so you can see what you should be doing :)16:49
deper29i'm on a second computer ;)16:49
hobgoblindeper29: I only needed to do it once with a dev version when nvidia broke for a month or so16:50
hobgoblinaah - that makes life so much simpler :)16:50
deper29install NVIDIA's 32-bit compatibility OpenGL libraries? y/n16:51
hobgoblindeper29: I really can't remember what I needed to do - try with y and if it fails start again with n - or the other way - sorry not to toi be too certain - but it was possibly 2 or 3 years ago16:52
deper29okay16:52
deper29I'm now asked if I should run the nvidia-xconfig utility to automatically update the x config file so nvidia x driver will be used when I restart x16:53
hobgoblinthat's a yes16:54
deper29rebooting16:54
deper29hoping this works16:54
hobgoblin:)16:54
deper29:D:D:D:D:D:D:D16:54

hobgoblincool :)16:55
deper29thanks so much for your help16:55
hobgoblinwelcome deper2916:55
deper29this was the biggest pain I had16:55
deper29I lost much sleep lol16:55
hobgoblinremember what you did - I can't remember what the deal with dkms was in 10.04 but you might need to do it again with kernel upgrades - and if you've juts installed 10.04 and not upgraded yet then you'll need to do it sooner rather than later16:56
deper29i did updates16:56
deper29I will document this16:57
hobgoblinok - that'll help then :) bookmark that page lol16:57
deper29done :)16:57
deper29this looks so much nicer17:01
deper29thanks a bunch again :D17:01

r4yI have a hard drive recovery question22:08
r4yIs it a good idea to delete un-needed files before fsck?22:09
r4yI mean that are not under the filesystem, but rather I mean files I have under home like music files and so forth.22:10
r4yI should say I somehow got this hard drive to mount22:10
r4yI don't know how, but it is mounted. I am not even sure if I can delete the files I want to22:11
r4yI am backing up little files first, and deleting them. I am sure only the files that have permission problems either won't delete but I could be wrong, or might not be a good idea to delete, but if I am wrong I would like to know, then I will know what to do before fsck22:15
r4yIs anyone here?, Or are the readers that are looking don't know?, Or just don't have time?, I am sorry and I understand if so, sorry too much coffee, lol22:17
r4yYes, everything is great so far.22:18
r4yI am checking the permissions of the files I am copying before backing up22:19
r4yI may need to move to my other hard drive22:20
r4yI want to thank bioterror, I think geirha, glebihan, holstein and anyone else who helped me earlier last night and this morning  very much.22:23
r4ytake care :) /22:23
r4yNow, the more I think about this, the more I realize I want to find things with in this setup. Like for instance the command I put under main menu which is also called alacarte for things like atari800. I can't help but wonder if I will miss something.22:45
r4y.config maybe. I have no idea22:46
r4yI will just search alacarte in the filesystem22:47
r4yYes, I have many results22:49
