philipballewpleia2, are you still on the american membership board? I have a question about a membership benefit04:26
pleia2yep, ask away04:26
philipballewI went to sign up to get put on the linkedin group a month ago and I got an email today saying they can not add me because I am not a ubuntu member04:27
philipballewor that they cant find any prof that i am04:28
pleia2send them a link to your launchpad profile04:28
pleia2https://launchpad.net/~philipballew/+participation shows that you are a member04:29
pleia2it's run by community members who have limited time, sometimes there are mistakes04:29
philipballewalright. I am unsure why they would think that. i'll look for the email on the linkedin page04:30
pleia2I'm not sure how they review potential members, it could just be a mistake too *shrug*04:31
philipballewim not worried. just figured i might investigate it anyway :)04:31
BotenAnnahttps://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-4FLwjMIEvjw/Trq1W9vAyZI/AAAAAAAAIy4/vCbJGD_eir8/w402/323731_awwwwwwwwwww.jpg squirrel!17:25
pleia2aww17:26
Faqtotumlooks like from europe17:28
nhainesThey creep me out.17:28
pleia2sleeping squirrels creep you out?17:29
nhainesI don't like their eyes.17:29
pleia2they're closed!17:29
nhainesSee?  You can't even tell!17:29
pleia2lol17:30
akkThey're watching you anyway ... through their eyelids!17:30
nhainesI want a raspberrypi device!17:30
nhaines$35 for a computer?  Count me in.17:30
akkI want one too. A small low-power linux box with GPIO!17:31
akk(and cheap too)17:31
nhainesNothing like a tiny computer + Debian to make for a happy geek.  :)17:31
akkI have a couple of plug computers, but they're a lot more expensive and can't control random hardware.17:32
nhainesI want one, I just don't have any use for one.17:32
pleia2sf ubuntu hour tonight \o/ http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-california/1378/detail/17:32
pleia2I am not convinced anyone will actually show up, I think we're getting into near-holidays-no-one-shows-up time17:33
nhainesha17:33
nhainesWe'll see about LF ubuntu hour on next Thursday.17:33
pleia2either way, I get hot chocolate and a change of scenery17:33
nhaines\o/17:33
nhainesYeah, that's my motive too.  :)17:34
nhainesI'll have to make up the 2012 schedule soon.  With it being every other week, I schedule it so it falls out of the holiday weeks.17:34
* pleia2 nods17:34
pleia2this month was supposed to be debian dinner month too, but I didn't get around to it17:35
pleia2hopefully doing it next month will encourage folks to come out even though it's december17:35
nhainesIt's a bit of a chore, but far more convenient (for attendees) not to have to cancel or anything.17:35
pleia2yeah17:35
Faqtotumpersonally, i think the raspberry pi's ability to run linux is counter-productive17:37
akkRunning linux is really handy for setting up a standalone device to run hardware -- you can script it in python or whatever, use cron, use networking etc.17:38
akkMakes it a lot easier to build a system than if you have to collect a zillion third-party arduino libraries, say.17:39
nhainesDefinitely.  Python's probably the gentlest way to learn programming that won't ruin you like BASIC.17:39
akkAlso, to some extent you can test your scripts on a desktop/laptop where you have a lot more debugging tools than you will on the device.17:39
Faqtotumif the point is to put fun back into computer science at a grade-school level, a device that can be useful out-of-the-box "short-circuits" that17:40
nhainesI donno.  Fun with computers for me at that age was Oregon Trail and Number Munchers on a green VDU.17:42
akkI'm not entirely clear how they're intended to be used in schools ... I could see arguments both ways.17:42
nhainesAnd very occasionally Osprey Lake.17:42
Faqtotumyou can't learn programming simply by making a collage of other people's code17:43
akkI could see grade school students having a lot of fun making LEDs blink and all that arduino-y stuff ...17:43
nhainesBut "Quasar Commander" on my TRS-80 CoCo2 didn't stop me from reading the entire "Introduction to Extended Color Disk BASIC" book that came with the computer.17:43
akkbut it's easier to get to that point by typing a few lines of python than with a compiler/downloader IDE.17:43
akknhaines: Wow, computers that came with actual manuals? :)17:44
nhainesakk: I didn't even know I was learning "to program", I thought I was learning "to use a computer."17:44
Faqtotumin the trs-80 days, there was no distinction17:45
nhainesI realized I was programming, but that was just sort of how you used computers back then.17:45
akkAnd that would be true of a classroom raspberry pi, probably ... with any luck it wouldn't be loaded with a lot of games and other ready-to-go software17:46
Faqtotumthe linux kernel, though?17:46
akkso programming it (or at least echo 6 >/dev/gpio/whatever) would be how you used it17:46
akkWhat's wrong with the linux kernel? Grade school students aren't going to write their own kernel.17:47
Faqtotumthey should17:47
akkWhy?17:47
Faqtotumbecause that's what made learning to program fun17:48
MarkDudeakk when you get a chance, I was hoping to tell you sumthin'17:49
akkMarkDude: Sure, tell! :)17:50
akkAnd funny, I've managed to have fun programming without writing my own kernel17:51
akk(though in HS I would have *loved* to be working on kernels, wish that had been an option then)17:51
* MarkDude has long said he was looking forward to the day he saw akk wrong17:52
MarkDudeThat day was yesterday17:52
akkNo! Not possible! :)17:52
akk(anyway, you've seen me wrong before)17:53
MarkDudeThe Big Lebowski was such a great movie, they started a cult (religion) around it17:53
MarkDudeWell maybe I have seen you wrong (mental block on my part)17:53
akkUgh, awful movie! Seen it recently?17:53
MarkDudeSo you are human17:53
MarkDudeIts ok17:53
MarkDudeYEs, I have seen it a few times17:53
* MarkDude already had considered legally changing his mane to Dude before the movie17:54
MarkDudeYEars ago, some of my students from UCSC , told me I WAS the dude17:54
Faqtotummane?17:54
MarkDudeName17:54
MarkDudeFaqtotum,17:54
* MarkDude did have long hair back then17:55
MarkDudeRemeber the part they spread their friends ashes?17:55
akkThat part, I admit, was funny.17:55
akkBest part of the movie, maybe.17:56
MarkDudeWhen my Grandpa died, we spread his ashes in the Bay17:56
* MarkDude kids you not, the wind came up17:56
MarkDudesame effin' thing happened17:56
akkhaha ... horrible, but funny too17:56
MarkDudeGrandma went to  be shocked for a second17:56
MarkDudethen lost it laughing17:56
MarkDudeMy Grandpa was a yacht broker, and was very proud of NEVER falling into bay17:57
MarkDudeGrandma said IDK if Im dead, I am not going in the water17:57
akklol17:57
MarkDudeALL of on boat laughed, MINUS one aunt17:57
MarkDudeShe was not amused17:58
MarkDudeThe rest of waited until Gma started laughing17:58
MarkDudeDark humor, but was funny17:58
akkGreat story! I think I like your story better than the movie version.17:59
MarkDudelol17:59
MarkDudeFair enough17:59
MarkDudehttp://dudeism.com/17:59
* MarkDude puts that movie in same category as Napoleon Dynamite18:00
MarkDudeRumor has it to enjoy it better, some sort of imbibing is helpful18:01
akkI liked ND but found it unmemorable ... when I try to remember it I always end up remembering Wilder Napalm instead.18:01
akkI could see Lebowski working as a stoner movie, yeah.18:01
MarkDudelol18:02
MarkDudeDont forget white Russians work also18:02
* MarkDude should see about us getting a bowling alley for party18:02
akka geekbowl?18:03
MarkDudeSure18:03
MarkDudeWe already have a few that are Nihilist18:03
akkI think the last time I bowled was about 10 years ago ... a bunch of autocrossers went, it was a lot of fun.18:03
MarkDudeThat was good part also, Flea from the Red Hot Chili peppers was one of the Germans18:04
akkAutocrossers get all competitive about everything, even stuff they barely know how to do at all. :)  (and yes, that includes me)18:04
MarkDudelol18:04
MarkDudeWe have confirmed party day at Dojo as Dec 4th - hopefully you can make it akk18:05
akkCool! Yes, I think I should be in town then.18:06
MarkDudeYay,18:11
MarkDudeWe will have both beef and veggie hot dogs18:11
Faqtotumparty?18:12
MarkDudeYep Faqtotum18:13
MarkDudeSponsored by another project18:13
MarkDudeWe will have prizes, usb drives, swag etc18:14
Faqtotumah18:14
MarkDudeThe grand prize winner gets a Beefy Miracle shirt18:14
MarkDudeIF they dont want that, we will order them a Pangolin shirt18:14
Faqtotumbe precise about it18:14
akkAh, sounds like I should put F* (the F-word :) onto a partition on my laptop before then. :)18:15
MarkDudeWell the shirt will be ordered after there is a winner18:15
MarkDudeSumthin like that akk18:15
MarkDudeNo need to install tho18:15
* MarkDude really wants a larger FOSS picture here18:15
akkYeah, I've been meaning to put it on my multiboot usb stick anyway (assuming I can -- opensuse can't be booted that way :( )18:15
* MarkDude has agreed to carry Ubuntu CDs with him (still needs some current)18:16
MarkDudeAnd has asked for otheres to carry another Distro of their choice with them also18:16
akkWhich one is beefy miracle? 15 or 16?18:17
MarkDudeF1718:17
* Faqtotum was kicked from a fedora-centric channel for saying "ubuntu ubuntu ubuntu" in the FC2 days18:17
MarkDudeWe still have time for a few more parties18:17
akkoh, right, I mistyped18:17
MarkDudeFaqtotum, lets go to that channel now18:17
* MarkDude will make sure that does not happen again18:17
Faqtotumi doubt it's even still here18:17
MarkDudeUnless it was #Fedora18:18
Faqtotumi don't remember the channel name18:18
Faqtotumno, it wasn't that one18:18
MarkDudeEvilbob is well EVIL18:18
MarkDudeHell they dont stop me from saying Ubuntu18:18
* MarkDude recommends Fedora Ambassadors go out of their way to be freindly with local Ubuntu (and other groups)18:19
akkWe're all on the same side!18:19
MarkDudeNow if I can get a drawing of a Pangolin, I can make a shirt with it, and the infamous hot dog18:20
MarkDudeakk yes we are18:20
Faqtotuma pangolin playing a mandolin18:20
MarkDudeMany in Fedora see bug #1 as common goal18:20
akkThere are some great pangolin pics (only one drawing I see, though) on google image search.18:21
Faqtotumi think unity's rejection of the basic X11 protocol for displaying a tray icon is a more pressing bug18:22
akkOne decent drawing in wikimedia commons, but it's not that cute: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pangolin_ggant_28M_gigantea29.jpg18:23
akkBut http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pangolin%27s_tail.jpg (a photo) is way cute. :)18:23
MarkDudeawesome pics akk18:30
broderpleia2: i'm totally planning to come to ubuntu hour today, assuming i can escape from work early enough18:31
MarkDudeWhere is the UH?18:31
* MarkDude has flashmob practice tonight18:32
pleia2broder: cool18:32
pleia2MarkDude: the roastery in sf18:32
MarkDudeWhat time?18:32
* MarkDude will be doing this later http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuCQCEEAZ9o&feature=youtu.be18:32
* MarkDude will most likely never live the flashmob thing down- the dancemoves are hectic18:33
Faqtotumi think the drawing is cuter than the photo18:39
MarkDudeWell now the question is getting art team help to make a great design18:42
Faqtotumi <3 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/58/Ocelot_01.jpg18:50
akkGorgeous!18:50
nhainesakk: when you said you needed to put F* (the F word) on your laptop, I thoughty you meant 'fsck'.19:01
Faqtotummost distros already include fsck in the base install19:02
nhainesFaqtotum: sure, one reason that it didn't make sense.19:30
