[00:03] is there any way to install all multimedia codecs available? Im using ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS [00:06] you mean lubuntu? [00:09] seems like you could just use medibuntu [00:13] yes lubuntu [00:13] no... i have downloaded lubuntu dont want to download another iso [00:15] uh [00:15] go look up medibuntu [00:15] it is NOT a distribution [00:16] it is a repository of non-free stuff [00:55] hahah [00:55] oops wrong channel === Evixion` is now known as Evixion [01:31] how do you turn off notifications? [01:31] it [01:31] it's annoying [01:57] the lubuntu minimal install, did anyone here tried it ? === robotman is now known as AlexAv [03:33] LubuntuPowered: you could remove whatever is generating them.. i forget what it is... *-notify? [03:33] if you open synaptic and search notify, and through out a few, i'll know === Zach__ is now known as zkriesse === zkriesse is now known as Guest55573 === Guest55573 is now known as zkriesse [03:54] hello everyone, I was wondering if there was a mailing list or rss feed for new enteries into default repositories for the package manager? [03:55] say a new office program or app is added, or new educational apps... [04:03] l057c0d3r: there wont be new ones added [04:03] think of the repos as being frozen kind of [04:03] they get updates.. security updates, to a certain point [04:04] what... [04:04] l057c0d3r: like, ubuntu 10.04 for example [04:04] it doesnt get firefox 8 or whatever they are up to [04:04] thats ok dont use firefox [04:04] it just gets the latest 3.x or whatever it was [04:04] l057c0d3r: its just an example [04:05] if a new browser comes out, it doesnt get added to 10.04 [04:05] OR 11.10 for that matter [04:05] it would be added in for 12.04 [04:05] more likely, it would be added into debian upstream (AFAIK) and trickle in that way [04:05] i see [04:06] thanks for that information [04:06] holstein: as lubuntu uses Chromium as the default browser, I am not really suprised that it does not pick up FFox updates? [04:06] chromium isnt bad [04:06] its just an example [04:06] i like developer tools.. [04:06] all of the apps are kind of frozen [04:06] new apps dont get added in to 11.10 [04:06] however im disipointed in the adblock addon. works better on firefox [04:07] anyway thanks for the information [04:07] as the software center matures, there will be more commercial apps that would be added on [04:07] There has been a delay in backporting things to 10.04 some of pcmanfm is not happy, it is on his list of things to do. [04:07] new to this flavor of linux... moved from gentoo fluxbox [04:08] also, lubuntu = ubuntu [04:08] the same repos [04:09] a lot different when it comes to installing stuff. and a lot faster... [04:09] so, if something gets an upgrade, its upgraded there for everything [04:09] lubuntu chooses its default programmes carefully, whilst you are free to add any others you want - you need to keep them updated, lubuntu will only update the standard ones. [04:09] lubuntu will update the packages you have installed [04:09] the package manger will [04:09] u sure they use the same repos.. because there is a game on ubuntu that cost 3$ that i cant find anywhere on lubuntu in software manager :-p [04:10] if you install firefox, and it gets rev'd, it gets it just like buntu [04:10] what is that app.. [04:10] l057c0d3r: take a look [04:10] open up your sources and look for secret.lubuntu.source [04:10] i dont see that [04:10] i see just buntu ones [04:11] The game on Ubuntu that costs is in the software center, that has pay for software, Lubuntu doesn't have that software center [04:11] everything is open... dont take anyones word for it... open it up and take a look around :) [04:11] is it possible to install it? [04:11] yeah, its in the repos ;) [04:11] Exactly [04:11] k thanks [04:11] l057c0d3r: we do not currently have the 'paid for apps' that ubuntu has. the overhead for even running that as a search breaks the rules of memory / cpu usage. If you want the full Ubuntu software center, simply install ubuntu? [04:12] keep in mind that lubuntu has chosen this particular package set for speed though [04:12] i like the light interface and how it runs [04:12] so, if you add a lot of things from main normal buntu, you can bog it back down [04:12] thats why i have lubuntu [04:12] and my games run better / other apps because of less resources being used :-) [04:12] holstein: indeed [04:13] would the software center bog it down? i dont think so [04:13] Software center isn't lightweight [04:13] right but its not running all the time [04:13] yeah, but its not running in the background right? [04:13] Correct [04:13] holstein: it has taken a lot of tweaks just to get a lubuntu version. [04:13] thats all that matters to me [04:13] thanks [04:14] phillw: i bet, its nice and light, and slick too :) [04:14] so i could use it to download the game.. then play it with my less resource hungry lubuntu [04:14] l057c0d3r: correct [04:14] and sorry to say this but on my sisters top end lappy ubuntu dashboard lags up terrible [04:14] everything else is lightning fast [04:14] ubuntu 22:57 < jmcantrell> what are the various apps in xfce built with? [04:14] but items in the dashboard take forever to show up [04:14] opps [04:15] l057c0d3r: what dashboard? [04:15] unity? [04:15] yeah [04:15] thats why i have lubuntu [04:15] unity 2d is pretty light actually [04:15] nothing but problems with unity on every system i've tried it on [04:15] eh, im not going to use it, but its tested ok for me [04:16] right it test fine [04:16] but you will notice on startup sometimes it takes 5 to 8 min before all menu items in its dashboard show up.. even on top end systems.. [04:16] now on a desktop you may not notice as much because you don't restart near as often [04:17] but anyway enough babling [04:17] if you guys & gals just want to have a chat about things, please use the #lubuntu-offtopic area. It is not logged like here & it's a great channel to chill out on & discuss things on instead of the logged support channel :) [04:17] thanks for the info and take it easy peeps [04:17] Have a great night === MichealH is now known as MH0 === MichealH is now known as MH0 [21:50] Hello. I am trying to Installa driver for my AcerONE D250 Netbook. The problem is, in the tutorial says I need to input this to know my model: lspci -vnn 14e4 But nothing happens, Is this the right way to know my Wifi model? [21:56] You could just run lspci to get the model number [21:59] I am trying to find out whether a PCI device is supported by the b43 or b43legacy drivers, [22:00] But I guess it is, since just typing: lspci -vv tells me that "Kernel driver in uses: b43-pci-bridge" [22:00] You were looking for the command lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4 (You missed the grep) [22:01] Ah, well, I was using it like this: lspci -vvnn grep | 14e4 [22:01] Heh, yeah. You need to pipe it into grep ;) [22:02] Unit193: Thx [22:03] Sure, got what you need? [22:03] Yep [22:03] Now lets see if I can compile a driver :D [22:51] Is there a way to put a gcc compiler by default in Lubuntu? I was trying to install a wifi firmware and asked me for a "make", do I downloaded "make" and did make on the firmware, but now i get a "no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH" [22:51] Man! [22:51] This is outraegous [22:52] or whatever you spell that [22:52] Anywho... [22:58] now that's just weird [22:59] Osmodivs_ i've got make and gcc and pretty much have a default install that's never run on wifi [22:59] i don't thinki've ever had a reason to have make or gcc installed [22:59] and yet i have both [22:59] Well, my verion of Lubuntu wants me to install such packages [23:00] what version? [23:00] and how are you installing this wifi stuff? [23:00] 11.10 32bits [23:00] apt-get? [23:01] Well, I have an Acer ONE D250, so they come with this Broadcom wifi and I need a firmware [23:01] so apt-get install firmware-b43-installer or whatever it is? [23:01] The thing is, I do not have an ethernet cable, So i guess thas the only choice [23:01] oh gawd [23:02] so how did you download make??? [23:02] I was trying to do it with .tarballs but I got this C compiler problem [23:02] ok here's my totally not lazy absolutely serious best thing for you solution: [23:02] (ready?) [23:02] go buy an ethernet cable [23:02] I downloaded make with my other PC, wich only has WiFi [23:02] it will be more of a pain in the butt to do it without the internet than it will with [23:03] Yeah, I guess that's the only solution. CABLE [23:03] even if it takes you all day to go make the money for and buy an ethernet cable [23:03] other option: resolve ALL the dependencies yourself [23:03] I 'll just go to a cyber-cafè [23:03] manually [23:03] Nah [23:03] there must be like 250 of those dependecies [23:04] It's pretty much a light Lubuntu [23:04] even if there's 10 it's still a pain in the butt [23:05] i must say tho [23:05] i'm worried about your lack of gcc/make [23:05] i seriously think that something must be wrong with the install [23:05] which method did you use to install? [23:06] LiveUSB [23:06] I checked if the USB was corrupted, and it was not [23:06] are you running off the liveusb or did you use a liveusb to install to hd? [23:07] It is already installed in my Acer ONE NetBook [23:07] I used a USB [23:07] just making sure [23:08] i don't see any reaosn why that would be any different [23:08] perplexing [23:08] Wich is strange, because Ubuntu worked "out of the box". Does this means Lubuntu ... you know, scks? [23:08] b43 doesn't work out of the box on just about anything [23:08] Well, Ubuntu did [23:09] I've had Ubuntu in this machine since 9.04 [23:09] then why bother with the change? [23:09] But decide to change when Unity came [23:09] and Gnome3 [23:09] if that's your only problem just install lubuntu-desktop and get rid of gnome [23:09] It's anetbook, so Ubuntu is too heavy [23:10] Well, I decided to do a frsh install of Lubuntu [23:10] Deleting Gnome stuff kinda broke my system [23:11] !purelxde ! Osmodivs_ [23:11] wxl: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :) [23:11] oh sheesh [23:11] !purelxde | Osmodivs_ [23:11] Osmodivs_: If you want to remove all !KDE, !GNOME and !XFCE packages and have a default !Lubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purelxde » [23:11] thx ubot5 [23:12] uh [23:12] Unit193: [23:12] Still isn't quite as good as a fresh install [23:12] Yep, thats the tutorial I followed [23:12] Sure wxl [23:12] and it BROKE my system [23:12] not all system are made the same
