matthias_Hi, two days ago I filed a bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/888764) concerning some frequent ata events in my syslog. I've just disabled the Optimus technology in my BIOS settings and somehow it seems that the problem disappeared.10:39
ubot2Launchpad bug 888764 in linux "SATA link frequently resetting" [Undecided,Confirmed]10:39
matthias_Does that make sense? If so, I'll update the bug report..10:40
ohsixif you enable them again does it continue?10:44
matthias_ohsix, good point ;)10:45
matthias_I'll try that after a reboot.10:45
matthias_However I was quite surprised that the graphics device might be related to ata errors. The only thing I can think of is something like address conflicts.10:46
ohsixinterrupts are shared too, though between video and a disk controller would be unusual, /proc/interrupts lists them all10:47
matthias_weird10:52
matthias_anyhow, I'll reboot and see :)10:52
matthias_see you later10:52
matthias_ok, the problem returns when Nvidia optimus technology is enabled..11:12
matthias_so it seems to be related..11:12
JanCmatthias_: it might be related to interrupt task scheduling (e.g. if the Optimus tech keeps the OS so busy in its interrupts that the SATA interrupts time out or so)  (I am not a kernel specialist)11:33
JanCespecially if Optimus interrupts require trips back through the BIOS (and thus possibly trips back to 16-bit mode...)11:35

ebelLet's say I want to patch my kernel to do something. Is there a simple, offical, "Copy & Paste these lines into the terminal to recompile things" guide?16:49
ebelOr even an offical "Ubuntu kernel recompile HOWTO"? (There's a community one on wiki.u.c)16:49
ebeloh, maybe I've already found it https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel16:50
erichammondjjohansen: Your notes on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-on-ec2/+bug/365233 inspired somebody to try to build a 1000Hz kernel for EC2 and they  ran into problems: http://stackoverflow.com/q/8088901/11128623:10
ubot2Launchpad bug 365233 in linux "Provide Ubuntu EC2 kernels with 1000Hz timer (for VOIP/Asterisk)" [Wishlist,Triaged]23:10
erichammondI guess it's something people still want to be able to do.23:11
jjohansenerichammond: hrmm, I'll have a look23:11
