phunyguyman, I am telling you. Winrar in wine is the way to go00:00
phunyguyat least for the crappy ones00:00
phunyguyand if it doesnt work, it's not unrar.00:00
hallmanWell f.. I'm not installing wine.00:00
phunyguysuit yourself.00:00
phunyguyguess you have to wait for reruns.00:00
phunyguy_vboxwheee00:01
BarkingFishis it possible they have the wrong extension?00:01
hallmanTried unzip just now, dunno how to check what file it may "actually" be..00:02
BarkingFishi've encountered torrent files like that before, where the finished file is not what it said, like AVI's which are mpg, vice versa00:02
BarkingFishhallman: try renaming the last part of the file to .zip instead of .rar00:02
phunyguyman I am torn.  I love KDE, but every time I try it out, I have issues with SOMETHING.  This time it is browsing.  I like the freedom and flexibility of not using Unity, but I can also get that with Xubuntu.00:02
hallmancannot find zipfile directory in one of etc00:03
phunyguyhallman is it classic rar layout?  (.rar, .r01, .r02)00:03
phunyguyor whatever00:03
hallmanyes00:03
phunyguyand you are selecting the .rar00:03
phunyguy(have to ask)00:04
hallmanSelected .rar, .r00, and as I usually do, just the directory. Nothng works.00:04
BarkingFishcan you test the archives?00:04
hallmanI'll install some sfv checker.. one sec00:04
genii-aroundYes, I believe unrar has a -t00:04
BarkingFishunrar  -t  <file goes here>00:05
hallmanAre you talking about free or nonfree?00:06
BarkingFishwhichever is linked to your unrar command :)00:06
BarkingFishmine is the free one00:06
BarkingFishjust type unrar -t  and follow it with the path to the .rar file you want to test00:07
hallmanSize, packed ratio, etc etc.. Lines... 0 0 0 -nan%00:07
BarkingFishhow big does the rar claim to be?00:08
phunyguythe magic question00:08
hallmanWell wtf, 0 bytes.. Isn't this embarrasing.. Why is ktorrent claiming that all dowloaded fine then. :/00:09
ikoniatone down the language00:09
hallmanAre not even acronymes ok?00:09
hallmank then..00:09
BarkingFishsounds to me like it got corrupted on the way down, maybe the headers got messed up.00:09
hallmanNo I got a full disc.. Thought the files were downloaded before that thoug..00:10
BarkingFishit happens, i've seen it on P2P services, you finish a file, 100% complete, claims it's 80mb or something and turns out to be 3k or something silly00:10
hallmanWell fine.. Sorry for taking it out on ubuntu I guess.. Like I said, shitty life in general, and ubuntu has caused me enough problems lately so why not take it out on the dist. :/00:12
phunyguywow he just doesn't get it.00:13
phunyguyyou can't just say "crappy"?00:14
phunyguyand friggin?00:14
phunyguysuch a simple adjustment00:14
BarkingFishnor it appears, do you get it :)00:14
phunyguywait, those are bad too?00:14
phunyguyare you serious?00:14
BarkingFishIf you wouldn't use it in front of your little brother, don't use it in here :)00:15
phunyguymy little brother is 23 ;)00:15
BarkingFishlol00:15
BarkingFishyou know what I mean00:15
phunyguyand I would use it in front of my grandmother,.00:15
phunyguyas well as my 5 year old daughter.00:15
phunyguymaybe that's just me... lol00:15
BarkingFishcould you imagine your daughter's school calling cause she used one of those words in front of her teacher, and told them she learned it from (daddy, i assume) :)?00:17
BarkingFishsorry, ex Child social worker this end, forgive me if I seem rude.00:17
phunyguyshe's homeschooled.00:17
phunyguyit's not rude... just really conservative.00:18
phunyguythe way I see it, as grown-ups, those words are fine.  Why teach that they are bad?00:18

phunyguyKubuntu STILL is not ready for me.00:20
phunyguyOff to Xubuntu I go.... for now.00:20
phunyguyI will lurk here for any help I can provide.00:21
BarkingFishbtw, ikonia - just to let you know, i think you may have just blocked one entire section of a huge student accomodation building in Sweden :)00:21
BarkingFishi won't tell you how to do your job, you know it better than me, but can he be blocked by nick? is that possible?00:22

LinuxephusCould someone be so kind as to tell me when an update for Firefox 8 will be available for Kubuntu 11.04 and what the  delay for it is thus far?06:15
LinuxephusI'm assuming the unusual delay for the update the usual repository is due to Kubuntu 11.10 recently being released. Am i right or wrong?06:16
=== Kalidarn1 is now known as Kalidarn
DaskreechLinuxephus: I'm not sure. I would think that since Firefox insists on all it's updates being called security updates now that FF8 will be available at some point in the main repo but they likely have a semi public PPA that tracks it in a more timely manner06:43
LinuxephusAh, my thanks then Daskreech. Judging by your comment, the main repo must be still working on finishing touches to get it packaged properly for the aforementioned main repo.06:45
DaskreechI am speaking out of ignorance with regards to that package but it would seem to make sense that if it's a security update (which all FF updates are now) then it would be pushed06:46
DaskreechBut that doesn't mean they will push it through rapidly unless it's a critical patch. More likely that they will make it available for wider testing and once they are confident enough that it's not a problematic package they will move it for general use for people who don't care06:47
LinuxephusAs for semi public PPA's, even the Ubuntuzilla PPA has yet to have it packaged.06:47
LinuxephusAgreed in concern to your statement about possible testing. That sounds about right considering the time delays for it thus far.06:49
LinuxephusI thought as much myself, but wanted to double check what others might know of it as well. All in all, the delay makes sense if they're testing all of the above mentioned.06:50
LinuxephusMy thanks for the input by the way Daskreech.06:51
DaskreechLinuxephus: You can ask in #ubuntu-devel (or check the Firefox launchpad page) if you want more info06:53
LinuxephusI'll head on over to the Firefox launchpad page as a matter of fact Daskreech. Thanks once again for the enlightening information. I bid you goodnight.06:54
DaskreechGood night06:55
LinuxephusDaskreech: You were right. FF8 is delayed until somewhere after the 17th of this month due to packaging testing for Kubuntu 11.04, including major changes being prepared for those still running FF3.6.x releases. Which readily explains certain delays in 11.04 on back.07:06
DaskreechAh same day KDE gets tagged for 4.8 beta release :)07:07
LinuxephusInteresting you should mention that (so much for "goodnight"...LOLing). I'm still waiting for them to backport KDE 4.7 for the 11.04 series.07:08

adi11it really annoys me so much17:54
rockprincessthe playback and the audio worked perfectly fine before the upgrade to 11.10 :(17:54
BluesKajrockprincess, played back fine in which player ?17:55
genii-aroundadi11: The times when it doesn't boot, how far along does it get?17:55
rockprincessBluesKaj: doesn't matter, I've tried Dragon, VLC and the flash in firefox.....17:55
rockprincessBluesKaj: same symptoms.17:55
adi11Genii-around : about 1min 30 sec. than it load the os17:56
rockprincessBluesKaj: Amarok doesn't playback any sound at all. speakers are NOT on mute (i've triple checked ;))17:56
adi11it just stays there on kubuntu logo with white dotsthan i can hear hdd normal noise that is loading17:57
BluesKajrockprincess, pls describe your symptoms and not someone else's , we need to know your details only17:57
genii-aroundadi11: So it actually does boot successfully every time but every second time it takes 90 seconds longer?17:58
adi11the times that fail, is like white dots loading than black screen and all you see is busy box and intramfs17:58
BluesKajok rockprincess , no sound at all or just none on amarok ?17:58
adi11no. it boots succesfully once in two.17:58
rockprincessBluesKaj: ok, the symptoms are: the video plays in double speed, people move faster than they should. and I don't hear any audio at all. it's silent.17:58
rockprincessBluesKaj: absolutely no sound on Dragon, vlc, and Amarok....I can test it in audacity too, if it helps prove my symptoms ;)17:59
adi11first boot it fails and sends me on busybox initramfs. than i do a ctrl+alt+del. and it restarts. than second time it takes like 1min 30 sec but it finally load the os.18:00

adi11and it should be the opposite18:15
rockprincessBluesKaj: you somehow fixed my audio problem, at least i can now play music in Amarok....thanks sooo much :)18:16
adi11genii-around : do you need to see any other file output?18:16
BluesKajrockprincess, ok, now , sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel18:17
rockprincessBluesKaj: ok done, this just loads the sound module, right? there shouldnt be an output from that?!18:18
BluesKajno18:18
BluesKajrockprincess, then open /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf with root permissions, add this line at the bottom , options snd_hda_intel index=018:19
BluesKajthat line makes the intel card your default at boot , rockprincess , it should work inall your players after you reboot18:20
genii-aroundadi11: Apologies on lag, trying to assist while at work here. No other files for the moment. You might try to rebuild your initrd by: sudo update-initramfs -u18:21

rockprincessBluesKaj: wonderful, shall I put a # comment tag in front of this line then? options snd-usb-audio index=-2 or is this being ignored anyway since the intel card is loaded first (index=0)18:23
BluesKajindex=-2 means it's not used , so no comment needed18:24
adi11genii-around : thanks for helping. if this might help. when it hangs on some times it goes on tty and there i can see some output from the sys. i see a lot of "ata1 device is slow to respond" and than error18:24
rockprincessBluesKaj: ok, cool! i will reboot now.....do you have any idea, why this was ignored/overwritten when i upgraded to 11.10?18:25
genii-aroundadi11: That may be a hardware issue also.18:25
adi11on my hdd?18:26
BluesKajrockprincess, no , but it's a common problem with the intel audio , but fixable18:26
rockprincessBluesKaj: I think my video problem could be related to a driver problem as well..?!18:27
genii-aroundadi11: Can be the HD is developing bad areas, or that the controller is experiencing problems. You might want to check BIOS and see that boot order is like: CD, hard drive you have kubuntu on, other stuff below this18:27
genii-aroundadi11: Also maybe check in there about S.M.A.R.T. reporting ( when HD senses it is going bad and tells the computer)18:28

BarkingFishI've deleted most of the 4.7.3 parts of kde, killed kdm and i'm in irssi - I am still seeing bits of kde 4.7.3 in the system and I can't get rid of them.19:55
DaskreechBluesKaj: You don't really get to decide what constitutes as that :)19:55
DaskreechBarkingFish: sudo apt-get remove kdelibs5 && sudo apt-get autoremove19:56

BarkingFishwell that didn't work.19:57
BluesKajBarkingFish, , hope you removed the ppas from source.list.d19:57
BarkingFishIt says kdelibs5 isn't installed, so it's not been removed19:57
BarkingFishBluesKaj: I did19:57
BluesKajgood19:57
caesar__Daskreech: by animations are you speaking of compiz?19:57

Daskreechcaesar__: Kwin19:58

BarkingFishi tried to install it, Daskreech and got told it's been obsoleted - something else refers to it, but it's not present20:15
BarkingFishunless i'm using the wrong package name20:16
DaskreechBarkingFish: did you remove the kde 4.7.3 repos ?20:16
BarkingFishyes20:16
BarkingFishi know where i went wrong, i had the ppa from neon and also kubuntu's proposed ppa on too20:16
BarkingFishboth gone, as are all my other 3rd party repositories.  history.20:17
BarkingFishfrom now on, if kubuntu don't issue it, i'm not installing it. shoot this for a game of soldiers, i'm not going through it again :)20:17
mirrakor_For the records: it was just a firefox problem, not sure how it works for default, but I had to manually add "kmail --composer %s" for mailto:-links20:18
BluesKajodd , only have a few issues with kde , but some are really annoying20:18
BarkingFishBluesKaj: this one was a pest, i've seen more bugs filed against plasma-desktop on 4.7.3 than i have against pretty much anything else. a20:19
BarkingFish*and that's only in the last couple of days20:19
BluesKajjust upgraded my other pc to 12.04 ...sems fine , sound even works without pulseaudio ...happiness!20:20
DaskreechBarkingFish: maybe just be more careful of what you have and keep on :)20:20
Daskreech I've installed software from a PPA then disabled it right after before20:20
BarkingFishDaskreech: the problem is, one of the progs I want and need is only issued from a ppa20:20
Daskreechcaesar__: isn't it?20:20
DaskreechBarkingFish: so install it then disable the PPA unless that's the only thing in the PPA20:21
BarkingFishSynCE, for syncing my WM2003 iPAQ to KDE20:21
BarkingFishthen I don't get the updates20:21

DaskreechBarkingFish: if it's the only thing in the PPA that's fine20:22
BarkingFishok then, it'll go back.20:22
BarkingFishWhen I get KDE reinstalled....20:22
DaskreechIt's when you have huge PPAs that's an issue20:22
DaskreechBarkingFish: You could go crazy and remove X :)20:22
BarkingFishi'm still getting told I've held broken packages.20:23
BarkingFishI've held nothing whatsoever. I don't understand this.20:24

Resistance:P20:36
BarkingFishResistance: i have no KDE, I cannot reinstall kde because the system claims I've held broken packages20:36

ResistanceBarkingFish:  i take it backup/reinstall is not an option?20:37

BarkingFishi think i've figured it out. possibly.20:44
BarkingFishi hope20:44
BarkingFishok, i'm still getting the broken package errors20:48
BarkingFishwhat I want to know is where it's getting the 4:4.7.3-0ubuntu0.1~ppa1 versions from for install.20:49
BarkingFishis there anyway I can remove all my sources on the cli and install a fresh set?20:50
BarkingFishi will get this to work if it kills me20:50
DaskreechBarkingFish: apt-cache policy20:51
BarkingFishok, i didn't understand any of that, but it looked good :)20:53
DaskreechBarkingFish: apt-cache is a command20:53
BarkingFishBasically, everything starts with a 500, then gives me details of the packages20:53
BarkingFish/s/packages/repositories20:53
Daskreechpolicy is an instruction to make it tell you apt's policy on a package20:53
Daskreechthen you put the package you want20:53
DaskreechIt will tell you the version you have installed the repos that have a package of the same name and what reop will be used if you install//update it20:54
Daskreechas well as version numbers etc20:55
BarkingFishinstalled: none / candidate 4:4.7.2-0-ubuntu1  for kdebase-runtime20:55
BarkingFishbut when I try to install it, it wants to install all of 4.7.3's packages as its depends20:55
Daskreechthere it will install 4.7.2 for kdebase-runtime20:55
Daskreechfrom which repo?20:56
BarkingFishsaid it's from /var/lib/dpkg/status20:58
BarkingFishwhich starts with 10020:58
BarkingFishi have just had a thought...20:59
BarkingFishi know it's rare, but I'll be back in a sec20:59
BarkingFishok, the thought doesn't help.21:00
BarkingFishThe status file shows a lot of kde packages which are at 4.7.321:00
BarkingFishand when i pull the policy on kde-runtime, it says the candidate is 4.7.2, but the 4.7.3 version is gonna be installed. I'm sure I can override that, just can't remember how21:01
Daskreechsudo apt-get install kde-runtime=4.7.2-021:03
BarkingFishwell that started to work, Daskreech21:06
BarkingFishI got this, apologies for the long message: kde-runtime: depends kdelibs5-plugins (>= 4:4.6.80) but it is not going to be installed21:07

BarkingFishwhat's the dpkg command for fixing stuff when it shows up as broken?21:08
Daskreech4.6.80 is 4.7.0 beta21:09
BarkingFishDaskreech: i have no idea then.21:09
BarkingFishI know of dpkg -i  something goes after it, can't recall what.21:09
Daskreechsudo apt-get -f install21:10
BarkingFishthanks21:11

Daskreechit will make a file named pastebinit that has  the output of the command21:21

Daskreechah and I guess you can't ctrl+c that quickly21:24
BarkingFishno21:24
BarkingFishcause i can't constantly watch the screen while it's going past21:24

DaskreechBarkingFish: essentially what's happening is that you have something from 4.7.3 installed that raises the min requirement of other things22:28
DaskreechBarkingFish: apt-get install libplasma322:28
BarkingFishDaskreech: purge should support that22:28
BarkingFishin my opinion22:28

DaskreechBarkingFish: that's it then :)22:30
BarkingFishDaskreech: the command would be apt-get remove with the purge option, to strip everything from (-v)ersion 4.7.322:30
DaskreechYou can do that with dpkg -get-selections22:30
BarkingFishyou can???22:31

pepe__hi there ! i'm rediscovering kde with kubuntu (coming from gnome) and i'm very happy. Howerever, i have a small problem, with gnom, i was using Synapse + zeitgeist for searching quickly with 2 or 3 letters the documents for opening it. Do you know how can i do this with kde ? thanks a lot for your attention !23:11
pepe__(using synapse from ppa and zeitgest without ppa there is nothing for the documents)23:11
pepe__here a screenshot of synapse (a semantic launcher) http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/synapse23:11
BarkingFishDaskreech: Houston, we have liftoff.  KDE is up, although I have lots of red crosses all over the place from missing stuff, and not a lot installed :)23:12
BarkingFishAnd I want to get as much gnome off my machine as humanly possible, as quickly as possible23:12
BarkingFishi'm closing on irssi, back in a while from xchat.23:13
BarkingFishsee ya, and thank you Daskreech and genii-around :)23:13
BarkingFishback in a bit23:13
DaskreechBarkingFish: did you install kubuntu-desktop ?23:14
Daskreechpepe__: Umm Well KDE has zeitgeist but I've never used it :(23:14
DaskreechYou could jsut use synapse until nepomuk search is universal (and reliable)23:14
JontheEchidnanot very many KDE applications at all have zeitgeist integration23:15
pepe__thanks Daskreech, i use it works fine for launching application, but not working for me for searching document23:16
DaskreechJontheEchidna: I know that23:16
* genii-around sips coffee and keeps an eye out for caesar_23:17
Daskreechpepe__: In theory if you enable nepomuk in krunner (the alt+F2 application) you should get searches for files23:17
JontheEchidnaoh, ok. It's just that saying "KDE has Zeitgeist" would seem to imply some grand-er integration than is currently there23:17
DaskreechNo it's just what I said23:17
DaskreechKDE has zeitgeist23:17
Daskreechkinda like KDE has a recipe managment application23:17
Daskreechdoesn't mean it's anything grand. Just that it exists23:18
BarkingFishyeehah!23:18
DaskreechBarkingFish: did you install kubuntu-desktop ?23:18
BarkingFishit's alive, master....23:18
BarkingFishDaskreech: i'm doing that now, another broken dep hidden in the system23:18
pepe__great Daskreech, it works very nice (alt+F2) this what i was searching23:18
BarkingFishksysguardd23:18
Daskreechpepe__: Hooray :)23:18
JontheEchidnaWell, zeitgeist is something separate from KDE entirely, in which context "having zeitgeist" would mean having integration with the already existing tool23:18
JontheEchidnaas opposed to having a recipe management system, which is a self-contained application23:19
DaskreechI guess if you come from KDE land :)23:19
JontheEchidnabut, no biggie. :)23:19
JontheEchidnajust didn't want any misconceptions23:19
Daskreechfair enough23:19
Daskreechas long as pepe__ is happy23:19
Daskreechpepe__: as a side benefit you can use alt+F2 as a calculator23:20
pepe__yes very happy now23:20
pepe__;)23:20
Daskreechpepe__: try alt+F2 -> 2^4=23:20
DaskreechOr 45 lb in kg23:21
Daskreechor 0 C in F23:21

* Daskreech prods JontheEchidna. Who's maintainer for the Weather wallpaper?23:25
pepe__what is the name of this alt + F2 application ?23:26
JontheEchidnaDaskreech: lol, I've not touched that in a while. It's safe to say it's unmaintained23:26
Daskreechpepe__: krunner23:26
pepe__ok thks, really great app23:26
DaskreechJontheEchidna: have you looked at the initial blog to see if you hit your objectives? :)23:27
Daskreechpepe__: Yep it's nice23:27
pepe__i will add it in the french doc of kubuntu (http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/lanceur_de_logiciel )23:28
