=== Guest2511 is now known as deafpancake [12:16] Hey all [18:16] Hey\ [18:16] Anybody here ? [18:17] anybody here from the arctic? [18:19] the netherlands, sorry [18:19] but it's cold here too [18:21] do u need help, Oldport ? [18:21] hahah [18:22] Not in ubuntu :) [18:22] where in then? [18:25] Just need some help in identifying some objects from the arctic [18:25] thought someone might be from arctic area [18:25] o_O objects? [18:25] costumes [18:26] and figurines. [18:26] from native american tribes or something? [18:26] yep [18:27] * genii-around makes more coffee and thinks about carving a narwhal tusk [18:27] cool :) [18:27] genii has a 6th sense [18:27] one of the item is indeed somekind of carved tusk [18:28] * sadsun is curious now [18:28] http://img803.imageshack.us/img803/3654/vs19704573a.jpg [18:28] heres one of the things [18:28] its a tusk [18:28] nice [18:28] or some kind of bone [18:28] its shaped like a wahle [18:28] im guessing its a whalebone [18:29] i knwo they used to make whalebone artifacts [18:29] Thats bone, yes [18:29] should photograph it together with a size reference [18:29] like a penny or something [18:30] i get it [18:30] My friend who was from Arctic Bay used to do a lot of stuff like this, I helped a bit. He would sell stuff to the local art stores, etc. [18:30] HxWxD: 1.6 x 1.1. x 4.6 cm [18:31] This one is quite old genii [18:31] My grandfather visited those areas in the 1920s [18:31] 1930s [18:31] something around that period [18:31] and this particular one looks a lot older than most the other stuff i have [18:32] is it just art or does it also have some function, like a button? [18:32] The tail of the whale is broken off, unfortunately :( But it does look interesting [18:32] he was an archaeologist by profession [18:32] by i dont know anything about this thing [18:32] didnt leave any references [18:33] but* [18:34] http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/4521/vs6926933.jpg [18:34] heres another weird thing [18:34] i think its some kind of goggles [18:34] very weird stuff [18:35] it's beautiful [18:35] That second one is definitely made of whalebone, I can tell by the grain ( it is fairly porous stuff) [18:36] Looks a variation on west coast thunderbird [18:37] what are those [18:38] I looked it up. [18:39] Might also be snow goggles [18:39] Thats what i thought [18:39] some kind of goggles. [18:39] ( although I don't see any through-holes) [18:39] its definite shaped and sized like goggles [18:39] heres a bunch of more weird things [18:40] http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/4941/vs1970456466.jpg [18:40] I think it functions like a baseball cap [18:40] I think these are just decorations [18:40] i think the middle and the right one are a lot older [18:41] hence the decoloration [18:42] some kind of ornaments perhaps [18:43] The goggle-things can also be for sleeping... it's hard to sleep sometimes when the sun is shining 24/7 ... [18:45] Of the three things there, hard to tell what the first is made from but looks like bone. The next two are ivory [18:45] are you from the arctic area genii? [18:45] that does make a lot of sense. [18:46] No. But my friend had me up there to visit a couple times, we would buy raw materials like soapstone, whalebone, etc to bring back for his carvings. [18:47] He was half Inuit half Welsh ( his dad went up there as a missionary, married a native girl ) [18:47] cool [18:47] I have some inuit costumes [18:47] http://www.spiritwrestler.com/catalog/index.php?artists_id=397 is him [18:48] very cool [18:48] well [18:48] not definitely inuit [18:49] but some kind of indian items [18:49] http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/139/tr165542011b.jpg [18:50] look at this [18:50] its quite something [18:51] i dont think theres a single bead missing on it [18:51] Looks like Ojibwe/Chippewa [18:53] looks a bit Iroquois [18:54] http://angelaswedberg.blogspot.com/2010/07/ca-1860s-plateau-bag-replica.html shows the style I was thinking of [18:55] The shape is unusual, yes [18:56] Work, afk [18:56] :) [18:56] later [18:57] are you planning to sell them or something? [18:57] no [18:58] unless someone offers me a ridiculous bundle of cash [18:58] i dont know if its worth anything [18:58] but i think its unique [18:58] and i know its gotta be old [18:59] its at least 70-80 since he got it [18:59] and he kept it very well so it looks a lot older [18:59] maybe carbon date them? [18:59] lol [18:59] what would that help? [19:00] the materials are million years old [19:00] billion [19:00] at best it could tell me what materials they are [19:00] and when they were exposed to certain conditions [19:00] true [19:02] also theres probably a lot easier way to tell what materials its made off than doing spectrographic imaging [19:02] x-ray [19:02] or all that stuff [19:03] there are simpler ways to figure out the materials [19:04] but an expert could probably tell straight off [19:05] carbon dating tells the age of the material... (if it has any carbon in it) [19:06] spectographic imaging could tell the content of the materials [19:06] if it is bone, then it should contain carbon [19:06] xray [19:06] neutroniic microscope could also determine [19:07] but an expert could probably tell with a simple microscope [19:07] true [19:07] + with carbon dating u have to take a piece of the material and grind it to powder :( [19:07] also the material, as important as they may be, dont tell the entire story [19:08] the general design and the techniques used is probably the only way to determine culture of origin [19:14] machines cant do that yet [19:14] maybe they can [19:20] doubt it :) [20:00] They didn't say. Just "limited time" [20:00] bah, wrong window [20:01] Hi all. :D [20:01] Hi dscassel !
