Daskreechjmichaelx: if you mean a pop up that comes up when a windows computer is turned on I don't think that's kmail unless you have a good reasoning behind why kmail would be doing that. it's much more likely to be solid00:00
Daskreechreisio: ctrl+D ?00:00
Daskreechoh wait00:00
Daskreech sorry00:00
Daskreechdon't do that hold on :)00:00
jmichaelxDaskreech: i did not understand a word of what you just said to me00:00
BluesKajBBL, stuff to do00:01
Daskreechreisio: wait ctrl+shift+T opens a new tab for me. Was I reading what you said wrong?00:01
Daskreechbye BluesKaj00:01
jmichaelxDaskreech: what does a windows computer have to do with the kmail popup warnings that most kubuntu 11.10 users see once they log in?00:01
reisio_lost my connection, who just said something to me? =)00:02
=== reisio_ is now known as reisio
Daskreechjmichaelx: Ok I'm going crosseyed weren't you asking about a pop up that comes up anytime a windows computer comes on the network?00:02
Daskreechreisio: wait ctrl+shift+T opens a new tab for me. Was I reading what you said wrong?00:02
DaskreechOr was that a different chan?00:02
jmichaelxDaskreech: i think so far nearly every time you've responded to me, you have been answering some question i never asked :-)00:03
DaskreechSorry both of you were asking about notifications everytime you logged in I got muddled. Sorry Kmail what is it saying to you?00:03
jmichaelxDaskreech: it is this same popup that everyone sees in 11.10.... i do not remember what it says00:04
Daskreechjmichaelx: is this a plasma popup or a dialog box?00:04
jmichaelxi should remember, since i have now seen it hundreds of times00:04
jmichaelxDaskreech: lol nevermind00:04
DaskreechI mean I've had akonadi errors etc. Is it an informative message or an error message?00:05
DaskreechIf i can guess the source it'll be easier to tell it to stop00:05
jmichaelxDaskreech: no idea how it would be classified... but you should know what i am talking about, since everyone sees it in 11.10, unless they have disabled it00:06
jmichaelxit's not a big deal, just an annoyance00:07
DaskreechOk well when I see it I'll let you know :)00:07
Snowhogjmichaelx: What ever it is you are referring to, I don't see it when I log in.00:07
jmichaelxDaskreech: you have seen it00:07
reisioDaskreech: know how to close a split view in konsole?00:08
jmichaelxSnowhog: i should not have said everyone, but it is a well-known issue in 11.10.00:08
Daskreechreisio: ctrl+D00:08
jmichaelxi just don't know the solution... and do not have kmail installed00:08
Daskreechjmichaelx: ! That's worrying00:08
SnowhogDaskreech: akonadi mail-dispatch agent looking for what isn't present??00:08
jmichaelxSnowhog: perhaps.... although i get the message whether kmail is installed or not00:09
Daskreechwell if he doesn't have kmail I'm not sure why he would have an akonadi mail agent00:09
jmichaelxok, nevermind.... i have seen this come up in this room many times now, but never took note of what anyone did to stop the popup. i'll figure it out00:10
szalas of now, KMail 2 is a total failure, imho00:12
jmichaelxwould have been more helpful if i had noted what the popup says lol. i could reboot right now in order to see it again, but don't feel like it00:12
szaljmichaelx: you mean that message bus or something error on KDE startup?00:13
jmichaelxszal: yea, i think that's the one00:13
szal"Failed to catch message collection" or something00:13
jmichaelxno, i believe it does mention the mail dispatch agent. i removed kmail hoping that would stop the popup, but that made no difference00:14
* szal ignores it already, doesn't seem to have consequences (unless perhaps you actually use KMail 2)00:14
szaljmichaelx: yes, that's it00:14
jmichaelxszal: yea, i could just ignore it, too... but over time it annoys me more and more00:15
jmichaelxthat's combined with a large number of other small annoyances with 11.10... they are adding up00:15
szaljmichaelx: indeed00:16
szalwhich is why I'm looking elsewhere, though I still need to find the time to switch00:16
jmichaelxszal: same here... not sure what to switch to. i have one machine running gentoo, which has given me no problems at all (gentoo is still using KDE 4.6.5), but the though of installing gentoo on everything else i have gives me less than enthusiastic feelings00:18
jmichaelxthought*00:18
* szal knows where to go00:18
szalback to openSUSE ^^00:19
szalI keep going back there because other distros just don't convince me over longer periods of time00:19
szalbest KDE implementation ever00:20
szaland stability-wise it never gave me causes for headaches00:20
jmichaelxi have never really used opensuse, but should maybe give it a try some time... the nice thing about the ubuntu world, has been that with the large number of users, it is often easier to figure out how to do certain things/install certain software than in some other distros00:20
szaljmichaelx: indeed, that and the sheer number of available software packages is a great plus00:21
jmichaelxyea00:21
jmichaelxwhat version of kde is opensuse stable using?00:22
szal12.1 ships w/ 4.7.200:23
szalnewer versions are available00:23
jmichaelxdoes it not have the task manager ghost issue?00:24
szal(currently 4.7.3, that is)00:24
szalwhat's that?00:24
jmichaelxugh.... icons remaining in the taskmanager after windows are closed00:24
szalhaven't seen that yet on Kubuntu00:25
Daskreechszal: Total failure is pretty harsh considering00:25
szaland I haven't installed oS 12.1 yet, so I wouldn't know what's the issue there00:25
Daskreechjmichaelx: couldn't you jsut log off and log back on?00:25
jmichaelxszal: i have four machines between home and work running 11.10, and they all have that problem. my main PC has it the worst, with a ghost remain in the taskmanager for almost every window i close00:25
szalDaskreech: it's a similar not-ready-for-prime-time state as KDE 4.0 was00:26
szaljmichaelx: just closed VLC, icon immediately disappeared00:26
jmichaelxi agree with szal... not as bad as 4.0, but bad enough that the whole KDE project is looking negligent and incapable00:26
jmichaelxthe whole mothly SC release idea is not working out for KDE00:27
szalthe monthly release schedule isn't a problem imho00:28
jmichaelxand in this case, i think the problem is more KDE than kubuntu00:28
Daskreechguess I've been lucky with it so far. Migrating my stuff was a nightmare in 4.3 but I've been ok since00:28
jmichaelxi think it is a big problem... some major bugs just live on and on... bugs that should be fixed before another SC version is released, regardless what the calendar says00:29
szalDaskreech: I switched over w/ 4.2.0..  migrating KMail was painless back then00:29
jmichaelxDaskreech: i wish i were not plagued with the various taskmanager bugs00:29
jmichaelxDaskreech & szal: are both of you using ATI graphics, by any chance?00:30
Daskreechjmichaelx: yeah tha's really annoying but pretty much gone for me with the latest update00:30
Daskreechszal: what are the issues you are having00:30
Daskreech Yes I am00:30
szaljmichaelx: I suppose you know that systray pop-ups aren't exactly pretty; openSUSE has that too, at least 11.4 w/ KDE 4.7, so I reckon that's a KDE problem00:30
szaljmichaelx: I have Nvidia00:30
jmichaelxDaskreech: 4.7.3 made that problem MUCH worse on this machine, and caused the problem to appear on another that until 4.7.3 had been immune00:31
jmichaelxi pretty much hate all popup notifications00:31
Daskreech*coughs* Kill systray00:32
jmichaelxthat bug is now the 4th most hated KDE bug00:32
jmichaelxi want the systray.... i just do not want the popups00:32
Daskreechjmichaelx: 4.8 is out in 4 days00:32
jmichaelxDaskreech: this problem is still very much alive in 4.7.800:32
jmichaelxoops00:33
jmichaelxDaskreech: this problem is still very much alive in 4.800:33
jmichaelxDaskreech: for a while KDE devs were claiming this was a problem with X, but that is seeming less likely as time goes on00:34
jmichaelxit seems somewhere communication between KDE and Qt is breaking down00:34
=== gary_ is now known as Guest25524

BarkingFishguys, does anyone else have problems with items open on your panel not responding to mouse clicks?00:53
jmichaelxBarkingFish: MANY people00:54
BarkingFishright.  Is there a bug or bugs filed on it?00:55
jmichaelxyes, there are bug reports00:55
jmichaelxhttps://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27546900:56
BarkingFishwhere would they be likely to be? on launchpad or kde's bug tracker?00:56
BarkingFishah, nvm00:56
BarkingFishthanks00:56
ubottuKDE bug 275469 in widget-taskbar "4 7 Regression: closed windows stay in the taskbar sometimes, taskbar doesn't react on clicks" [Normal,New]00:56
DaskreechBarkingFish: it's a kde 4.7.1 regression should be sorted for most people in 4.7.3 and hopefully osrted out fully in 4.7.400:57
jmichaelxBarkingFish: if you had  been here just a few minutes ago, i had been carrying on about this and related bugs00:57
* jmichaelx is not sure about the sorted out for most people in 4.7.3 part00:57
jmichaelxDaskreech: i have that issues on 4 different machines in 4.7.3.... and 4.7.3 made the problem worse00:58
jmichaelxand there are reports of the problem not being much milder in 4.800:58
Daskreechwho is running 4.8 ?00:59
BarkingFishDaskreech: yeah, they fixed it in 4.7.3, unfortunately breaking plasma-desktop in the process00:59
BarkingFishin 4.7.3, plasma-desktop crashes more times than a blind cyclist00:59
jmichaelxDaskreech: not me, but this is what i have read01:00
Daskreechjmichaelx: where ?01:00
DaskreechBarkingFish: 4.7.2 was quite a bit worse for me01:01
szalplasma-desktop crashes are annoying, but so far didn't harm anything for me01:01
BarkingFish4.7.2 is good here, only the mouse not working in taskbar occasionally01:01
jmichaelxDaskreech: i would have to look again for where i read that, but if/when i do, i will give you a link... until then you are welcome to regard what i said as hearsay01:02
DaskreechJust that at this point I think almost all the people who would be running 4.8 would also be in a position to sort it out before 4.8 hits either next week or next year01:06
jmichaelxwere not many of the same people in the position to sort this out in 4.7?01:07
jmichaelxDaskreech: i think i may have confused kde 4.8 and Qt 4.8 in what i was reading01:10
Daskreechjmichaelx: ah reasonable01:11
DaskreechBarkingFish: To be honest I hardly ever use the mouse so I don't know. ^F9 is so much more useful01:12
jmichaelxso maybe there is hope that the taskmanager will be inbetter shape in kde 4.8 :)01:12
BarkingFishjmichaelx: As long as the make sure it works fully before they send it out, i don't care01:13

BarkingFishDaskreech: well I'll make sure I'm live during the next packaging cycle, and i'll test everything that comes through :)01:24
DaskreechBarkingFish: ^F10 works nicely as well :)01:24
BarkingFishI hate upgrades because you never know quite how they'll work until people are using them.01:24
BarkingFishWe should really have a beta channel, as well as this one, specifically limited to people beta testing upcoming releases01:25
BarkingFishthat way we can fix the bugs before the whole thing goes live to the world01:25

kaddihi, i just upgraded to oneiric and now textfiles opened from the firefox-downloads window are being opened by notepad in Wine again. How can I fix that?16:54
kaddiI already checked and firefox-kde-support is installed16:54
kaddiit was working fine before the upgrade16:54
BluesKajkaddi, right click on the text file you DL'd then choose open with , choose other then in the list find kate , and choose it , check the 'rememeber application'16:57
espereguI read somewhere there is a package you can install to get better performance on older hardware. anyone knows where I can find more info on that?16:58
kaddiBluesKaj: the files are being downloaded (that's forced from the server, ti doesn't open text files directly) and saved in a folder. I'm trying to change the behaviour within the download-list of FF16:58
BluesKajkaddi, I'm not sure I understand16:59
=== gaurav__ is now known as Guest60222
espereguhmm. called low fat settings I gues17:00
kaddiBluesKaj: the file is downloaded and saved onto the machine. This is the behaviour as I want it. Once this download starts the "Downloads"-window opens showing the progress of the download and the finished downloads.17:00
kaddiin that window, when i double-click the finished download, it will open the file in notepad, not kate even though I have set kate as default text editor17:00
dbsi need help on my backtrack 5 no sound17:01
BluesKajFF defaults to ~/Downloads , but you can change the path if you wan17:01
BluesKajwant17:01
BluesKajkaddi, is that a url of the download site maybe ?17:02
kaddiif you press ctrl+shift+Y in FF that'll open your Downloads-page17:02
kaddiand when you click on one of the files that are listed there, they'll get launched.17:03
kaddiprovided they're still in the location where you downloaded it to17:03
kaddinow, before upgrading to oneiric, when i doubleclicked the text file it would get launched in kate17:03
kaddinow, when I double click the text file it gets launched in notepad (through wine)17:03
kaddiwhich takes longer to load, is badly rendered and all in all just annoying :p17:04
=== massimo_ is now known as Guest17698
BluesKajkaddi, what if yo just open ~/Downloads and choose the file there ?17:05
kaddithat's not really a fix, is it17:05
kaddiyes, i could go to Downloads, wade through the files there until i find it and then launch it with kate from there. However just double-clicking the latest file in the Downloads page is that much quicker and i know it used to work17:05
phiscribewhy is it dolphin and browse my a windows share with the machines name, //machine but ping machine  gives unknown host?17:06

kaddiah, yes17:08
BluesKajkaddi, habg on let me try that17:09
phiscribebah ill just use the ip adress, kips17:09
kaddiBluesKaj: i don't know if you remember but FF used to opnen the "open in containing folder" with nautilus instead of dolphin as well before the kde-ff-support package came around.. I suspect that this is a similar issue with FF not reading the kde settings where it should be reading them. But I don't remember how the fix works17:10

factotumthere seems to be something going on with Kubuntu these days. It seems that there is a growing trend of things working the way they should be. Should I be concerned?22:29
Snowhogfactotum: YES! There must be something wrong with your hardware!! Keep reinstalling until it breaks. :)22:37
factotumlol I always heard about it being some redheaded stepchild half-baked offshoot but i'm genuinely impressed.22:38
* Snowhog at the doctors office: "So, what seems to be the trouble? 'Nothing, that's what's bothering me!'"22:39
factotumthat was me in the slackware days lol22:39
factotum"everythings up and running, everythings configured how I want it....time to start over I guess."22:40
factotumhad to learn the hard way last night that tasksel not only give you an audio production environment, but xfce as well ala ubu studio. that was strange22:41
factotumim just glad that moin finaly came around. yast in opensuse was awkward22:42
Daskreechfactotum: blue haired stepchild :)22:44
factotumim fine with that :)22:44

factotumsorry for the typing. i have to hover my hands over they keyboard to keep from the pad to start taking over22:47
DaskreechSomeone always proposes something and everyone starts screaming why are you touching that? it works (almost) leave it alone!!22:48
Daskreech___PAGAL___: Hi22:48
SnowhogDaskreech: I appear to be one of the "blessed ones" in my foray into Linux. I've had almost zero issues since going Linux in 2007.22:48
___PAGAL___yes disk :)22:48
DaskreechSnowhog: Never said that it would hurt you. Distros outside of Fedora are usually pretty good about not swapping things out from under you22:48
DaskreechUbuntu is kinda getting into doing that as wel22:49
factotum2007? Luxary. We had to sleep in  a box in the middle of the road and compile our own kernels 2.4.x even, to get our hardware working properly22:49
Daskreechbut trust me someone is tearing apart something cause it's boring right now22:49
DaskreechI remember when the announced they were going to change to 2.422:49
___PAGAL___Daskreech how aree u :22:49

Daskreech___PAGAL___: I"m sleepy22:49

___PAGAL___Daskreech22:50
___PAGAL___I'm new in  linux :(22:50
factotumDaskreech: Nature of the beast I guess. I ignore all that banter.22:50
Daskreech___PAGAL___: Welcome!!! :) You avoided the Spanish Inquisition22:51
DaskreechNo one expected that one22:51
factotumYou realize time flies when you say LILO and they reply "who's that?"22:51

Staly_Nickhello, whats goin on here?23:01
Staly_NickWhats difference betwen Kubuntu and Ubuntu?23:02
factotumSnowhog: it doesn't turn off when the keyboard is in use and I can't click and drag. I'm stuck with double-clicking and draging the window border. Other option doesn't work23:04
factotumStaly_Nick: KDE instead of Unity23:05
factotummakes using inkscape and gimp a pain in the arse23:09
factotumSnowhog: there was an option in 10.x in the system settings gui, not it seems to have been removed. Strange.23:13
Daskreech!kubuntu23:13
ubottukubuntu is Ubuntu with the KDE Software Compilation instead of !Gnome. See http://kubuntu.org for more information - For support join #kubuntu - See also !kde23:13
Daskreechfactotum: It's technically KDE instead of GNOME23:14
factotumDaskreech: according to ubottu, yes.23:14
Daskreechfactotum: according to actual facts :)23:15
factotumOh, gnome is still the default?23:15
factotumDidn't know that. My bad.23:15
factotumI wonder if the really will go through with the whole Gubuntu thing for gnome. I heard some people started a petition for it.23:18
factotumMight as well, just add it to the roster.23:19
factotumNext up, Gnustepbuntu23:19
Daskreechfactotum: Unity is just a shell on top of GNOME23:20
factotumAAAhhhh I get it now. Okay.23:20
DaskreechThey are still using GNOME underneath the pretty (simple) interface23:20
factotumI dunno, it works well on my daughers netbook. It's all I know.23:20
factotumdaughters...bleh stupid touchpad23:21
DaskreechYeah it's a bit like plasma-netbook and plasma-desktop Different shells but the same KDE underneath23:21
factotumCool!23:21
Daskreechfactotum: synaptiks dosen't have the disable while typing option?23:21
factotumDaskreech. No for some reason it's not there anymore. Id did once upon a time with the 10.x release but it seems to be gone. Either that or relocated somewhere I haven't found yet.23:22
DaskreechI don't see why people would want a whole new distro to maintain so they can change one default package23:22
factotumEgo I guess.23:23
Daskreechmore like fascination with pain23:27
factotumokay offtopic question: single player fps that isn't server-based. with a story line etc for linux. Does one exist?23:59
