[04:41] i wish to learn to use rovclock in order to overclock my ATI Radeon 9600 video card [04:41] under ubuntu [04:57] hmm asterismo [04:57] i have no idea [04:57] why you would want to [04:59] yeah [04:59] overclock = more megahurtz :) [14:02] Hey, my ip address says i am in germeny and I dont remember setting up any proxy. any ideas? [14:02] what's your ipaddress? [14:03] 141.76.45.34 [14:03] inetnum: 141.76.0.0 - 141.76.255.255 [14:03] netname: TUDINF-LAN [14:03] descr: Technische Universitaet Dresden [14:03] country: DE [14:03] admin-c: CK29-RIPE [14:04] Yeah. this is odd [14:04] how so? [14:04] does ifconfig give you that ip address? [14:04] I live in california [14:04] lets see [14:05] should not take that long :D [14:06] http://paste.ubuntu.com/747050/ [14:06] so you got it from the router [14:07] check your router or your web browser / ubuntu settings [14:07] well no [14:07] I'm off from work [14:07] this has happened on two different networks [14:07] Nice! [14:07] check which ip address your router has if you're at home [14:07] or check your settings [14:07] quite simple [14:10] bioterror, http://imagebin.org/185311 [14:10] this is why happens when i try to log into my router. it wont let me [14:13] bioterror, [15:03] Hi everyone. I have a dell precision M6600 and I'm using the open-source radeon drivers. Unfortunately, I seem to having problems with booting and shutting down.. every other time or so (it's not perfectly consistent), the system just hangs. When booting, it'll get to the purple background, then freak out, then just go black. When shutting down, the ubuntu logo will be there and the dots will be moving, then suddenly they just stop and rem [15:03] In both cases I have to do a hard reset with my power button. [15:08] Anyone? [15:08] diatomaceous: do you have TTY when the 'crash' happens ? [15:08] i would try the proprietary drivers [15:14] diatomaceous: http://paste.ubuntu.com/747113/ [15:14] holstein: thank you. I have tried the proprietary drivers. Unfortunately there are rendering artifacts and the HDMI output on my laptop doesn't work at all with them. [15:15] For instance, the entire unity bar across the top of the screen is a fuscia mess, and fonts are unreadable [15:15] i wouldnt expect better support from the open drivers [15:16] They've been absolutely great so far [15:16] (when it boots at all) [15:16] if you have a freeze like that, you can try control+alt+F2 and sudo reboot [15:16] diatomaceous: could be something with the drivers and the kernel you are using [15:16] thanks, someone else showed me that as well.. it works, but I'd rather figure out why it's freezing sometimes and fix that. [15:18] diatomaceous: so, you can reboot without harming your hardware, without force restart [15:18] i would try kernels... i would try going forward and back in kernel versions with that driver [15:19] Would my logs helps point at it? [15:19] i would also try live CD's... knoppix, something non-debian... see if you get different results, and make a note of the driver and kernel versions [15:19] I'm curious if I didn't fully uninstall fglrx properly [15:19] diatomaceous: you can test for that with an ubuntu live CD [15:20] im sure theres a log somewhere, and you are welcome to wait around for someone that can help you find/interpret them... otherwise, im more of a hardware troubleshooter [15:23] that's actually good news. Are you more familiar with nVidia? [15:23] i have both [15:24] Have you had good luck with fglrx with firepro graphics cards? [15:25] i dont have any firepro [15:25] and i dont plan on getting any [15:25] im not a gamer, so intel is typically just fine for my needs [15:46] Hello. [15:51] hey s-fox [15:52] Hello coalwater === yofel_ is now known as yofel [18:07] Goodbye. [20:10] Hello. [20:13] wb s-fox [20:15] Hello M0hi [20:15] how is life s-fox ? busy? [20:17] Always. [20:21] * M0hi is attending lubuntu meeting. its nearly 2 AM now :P [20:22] Would anyone here care to help me diagnose my booting/shutting down issues? [20:23] M0hi, welcome to my ubt meetings [20:23] :-----------------------D [20:23] Welcome to the Ubuntu Beginners Team support channel || Please do not wait to ask questions, simply ask! [20:24] Ah, good point. My problem is sometimes my laptop freezes at a black screen instead of fully booting into the desktop. It happens about 2/3rds of the time I boot [20:24] The other 1/3rd of the time, it comes up just fine. [20:24] Shutting down is similar.. it hangs while the ubuntu logo is showing [20:24] I have to hard-reset with the power button both times [20:34] ne1? [20:38] QUESTION: I believe I am connected to a proxy server, but I have no idea how it happened and what to do? I dont remember connecting to one...\ [20:39] philipballew: just web traffic or everything (ssh, etc)? [20:39] if it's just web stuff you should check the proxy settings in your browser [20:40] pleia2, Its web trafic I guess. Like hulu and youtube both tell me im in Germany. Maybe google chrome is doing something funky [20:40] philipballew: yeah, go to preferences > under the hood [20:40] there is a proxy section [20:41] err, "network" [20:42] yeah, I looked there and it says im using my computers settings. Its odd, whenever i attempt to connect to the any router f any network i am on I get this [20:42] http://imagebin.org/185311 [20:43] Also, this happened in sd and now when i am in norcal it is happening as well :) [20:46] I'll just play around with it pleia2 and see what I can find [20:46] philipballew: good luck :) I've never touched system-wide proxy settings so I'm not even sure where to begin there [20:46] (and glad you made it up to norcal safely!) [20:47] Got in a 5 am. Its just my laptop here. Maybe something accidental got downloaded. Who knows [21:27] hey pleia2 Thanks for the info I found some random package installed that was causing my trouble [21:28] philipballew: oh good! :) [21:29] for sure. Well have a good turkey day! [21:29] TURKEY :) [21:29] you too :) [21:42] !vpn [21:42] For more information on vpn please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/VPN [21:55] sorry diatomaceous [21:55] looks like nobody was willing to help [21:57] diatomaceous, Are you using 11.10 ? [21:57] yes I am [21:58] And your machine is up-to-date? [21:58] yup. [21:58] I'm currently using the open source radeon drivers, but I did try FGLRX as well. [21:58] probably it doesnt start DM [21:58] I worry they're somehow not completely removed. [21:59] bioterror, what about thelling him to restart DM? [21:59] if I remember right, with catalyst you used to have Xorg.conf [21:59] M0hi, yeah, I would suggest to try pressing ctrl+alt+f1 [21:59] diatomaceous, ^ [22:00] Yup, I've done this [22:00] it says failed to start X server [22:00] there you go [22:00] then you can start the service [22:00] Grrr! thats the DM issue [22:00] gdm if I got this right [22:00] it fails again [22:00] it looks like GDM is no longer [22:00] yeah it is [22:00] sudo service gdm restart [22:00] you might want to 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm' [22:01] trying now [22:01] says gdm is not installed [22:01] which flavour of ubuntu are you using? [22:01] Package 'gdm' is not installed and no info is available [22:01] vanilla 11.10 [22:01] fresh install [22:01] 64bit [22:01] sounds weird [22:01] can you: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop [22:02] ubuntu-desktop is already the newest version. [22:02] 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. [22:02] oh sorry [22:02] my mistake [22:02] * bioterror feels ashamed [22:02] :D [22:02] it's lightdm [22:02] it's ok, I thought it was gdm too at first :) [22:02] that's why i'm in beginners [22:02] i feel like a beginner again [22:03] so.. reconfigure dm ? [22:03] you could [22:03] sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm [22:03] ok running that [22:03] dpkg-maintscript-helper: warning: environment variable DPKG_MAINTSCRIPT_NAME missing [22:03] dpkg-maintscript-helper: warning: environment variable DPKG_MAINTSCRIPT_PACKAGE missing [22:04] i have to go for now though [22:04] thanks for the help [22:05] np [22:05] but if that doesnt solve it [22:05] then we have to check if you have xorg.conf in /etc/X11/ [22:05] and if it's making things messed up [22:20] hi guys i am having some trouble installing the linux driver for my Seiko SLP 200 printer [22:20] can anyone help?
