CrellI'm back.19:09
CrellOK, so trying to run dist-upgrade, or do-release-upgrade, Apt tells me that there's nothing to upgrade.  Yet I am quite sure I'm on 11.04, not 11.10.19:09
CrellIs there something else I have to do first?19:10
BluesKajCrell, lsb_release -a19:10
Crell11.04 natty19:10
genii-aroundCrell: Make sure /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades  contains Prompt=normal     and not something like Prompt=lts or Prompt=never19:11
BluesKajalways do sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade first then, do-release-upgrade19:11
CrellIt's prompt normal.19:12
CrellBluesKaj: Yep, did that.  No change.19:13
genii-aroundCrell: Do you have some packages pinned?19:13
CrellI don't believe so.19:13
CrellThis is a fairly mundane 11.04 install from around September.19:14
CrellI've not done anything fancy with it.19:14
genii-aroundCrell: Is there a file ( not directory ) of /etc/apt/preferences  ..? If so then pastebin contents19:14
CrellIt doesn't help that my connection seems unstable today, either...19:15
genii-around( if some package is being held at a certain version it will prevent dist-upgrade or do-release-upgrade )19:16
CrellShould I just update my sources.list file to say oneric instead of natty and then let it roll?  Or would that break stuff?19:17
genii-aroundBreakage will follow if you do that19:17
CrellLovely.19:17
CrellHow do I check for pinned apps?19:17
phiscribeCrell read the release notes for 11.10, there are some gotcha's outlined19:17
phiscribefor upgrades that is19:18
genii-aroundCrell: I think i just went into this. If you have pinned apps, it's the /etc/apt/preferences file which says in it what app and so on19:18
Crellgenii-around: My connection crapped out, so I may not have seen it.19:18
Crellgenii-around: /etc/apt/preferences.d is empty.19:18
genii-aroundAh, I see now you did disconnect/reconnect19:18
genii-aroundCrell: /etc/apt/preferences FILE. So if it doesn't exist yet, you don't have any pinned packages.19:19
CrellOK, I guess I have nothing pinned then.19:19
genii-aroundDid you reboot yet since you ran the do-release-upgrade ?19:20
CrellNo.19:20
genii-aroundIf you ran dist-upgrade and it put a new kernel, do-release-upgrade will not run yet until you boot into the new kernel first19:21
Crelldist-upgrade didn't say I had any new packages at all.  Certainly not a new kernel.19:21
CrellI can try rebooting anyway, though.19:21
* Crell goes to go all Windows on his computer...19:23
CrellAaaand rebootdidn't fix it.19:27
BluesKajCrell, try sudo do-release-upgrade -d19:27
genii-aroundBluesKaj: That would try to put him at the dev release of 12.0419:28
* Crell does not want that. :-)19:29
SMJso... what would be a good music player?19:29
CrellAlthough when I run that, it does a complete re-update of natty sources, and now is doing an update of oneric sources.19:29
* Crell hopes it doesn't try to update anything else.19:29
BluesKajnot if he didn't get a full upgrade in the first place on 11.04 ...that's what I'm thinking19:30
genii-aroundCrell: So lets recap. The process is normally like:  sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.  Then it by then usually has your current version as up to date as it will be.  then: sudo do-release-upgrade      will normally work to push your current distribution to the next one in line.19:30
BluesKajit won't , your install was never complete19:30
oratedBluesKaj: Can you suggest something based on http://lists-archives.org/kde/13436-sensorlogger-in-ksysguard-now-is-writing-on-disk-file.html ?19:31
BluesKajorated, pls explain what you can't do instead of listing errors19:32
CrellOK, so when I ran do-release-upgrade -d, it rescanned lots of natty sources, then oneric, and now is asking me if I want to upgrade after all.19:33
oratedBluesKaj: As I said. Its not logging... Same thing what the bug id said and even the link above ^19:33
=== rdponticelli_ is now known as rdponticelli
genii-aroundCrell: Do you have some non-standard repositories in your /etc/apt/sources.list file, or some PPAs listed in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ directory which are for natty only or something?19:33
CrellThe only one I can think of would have been chrome. It said it disabled a repo.19:34
Crells/chrome/google chrome/19:34
CrellI think that was put in there by a package anyway, not by me.19:34
BluesKajCrell, right your first install wasn't a complete natty install , now you can do-release-upgrade if you haven't already19:35
CrellHow could it not have been?19:35
CrellIt was a fresh natty install from CD.19:35
BluesKajCrell, you still have to run udates and upgrades after the cd install , to catch the new upgrades to the existing packages19:36
CrellI've been doing that weekly for months.19:37
* Crell has been using Debian/Ubuntu since 2003 or so.19:37
BluesKajok, then that's weird19:37
CrellQuite. :-)19:37
BluesKajmaybe a 10.10 repos was holding things back19:38
CrellWell, it seems like it should be safe to just continue with the update that do-release-update -d wants to do, right?19:38
CrellShouldn't have been a 10.10.  Natty was a fresh install.19:38
BluesKajincluding /home19:38
BluesKaj?19:38
CrellYes.19:39
CrellIt was running SuSE before that.  I decided to wipe and start over.19:39
CrellSo shall I continue, or is there something else I should check first for safety?19:41
BluesKajCrell, well as long as it just installs oneiric packages , but it's worriesome that the -d is needed to upgrade to oneiric19:41
CrellLet me try saying no, then run it again without the -d and see what happens.19:42
BluesKajCrell, I'm running 12.04 quite successfully btw, if that's any consolation :)19:42
CrellHm.  No, it didn't like that.19:42
CrellBluesKaj: Yeahno.  I tried 11.10 in September when I was told that it was totally stable and ready in RC state.  It took me about an hour to realize that I didn't want to touch it yet. ;-)19:43
CrellOK, without the -d it still doesn't think there's anything to upgrade.19:43
Crell(This is why I'm doing this over a long weekend!)19:43
BluesKajCrell, try the -d , and if it asks to install 12.04 Precise , just N19:45
CrellIt doesn't specify a version, but all of the package sources it scanned were either natty or oneric.19:46
CrellSo I guess i'll go for it.19:46
CrellWorse case scenario, I've got 2 days in which to wipe and reinstall. :-)19:46
BluesKajCrell, actually 12.04 is more stable for me so far than 11.0 was19:47
genii-aroundIf it has mixed repositories between natty and oneiric right now, thats not a good thing19:47
Crellgenii-around: No, my sources.list was all natty.19:47
Crelldo-release-update -d ran througha bunch of natty packages (presumably to see where I was), and then oneric (to see what I needed, I guess), and then suggested stuff to update.  Which is, I presume, what it's supposed to do.19:48
CrellSo far all it's downloading is oneric packages.19:48
BluesKajyup19:49
genii-aroundCrell: What about any PPAs? They would be listed in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/    directory19:49
CrellHm.  OK, there were some in there.19:50
CrellOh bah, apt additions are now in a .d directory too aren't they...19:50
CrellNo wonder I couldn't find them.19:50
CrellYeah, I've got one for xhprof, one for chrome, and one for something Java.19:50
* BluesKaj thinks he mentioned that ppa file earlier19:51
BluesKajsigh19:51
CrellI was used to them being in the sources.list file directly.  It didn't occur to me to look for a .d.19:51
CrellSo is that going to break stuff, or will the fact that do-release-update disabled them (or so it said) be OK?19:52
BluesKajjust remove the ppas , then do-release-upgrade19:53
CrellRemove by commenting out the contents of those files?19:54
BluesKajit's a folder containing text files with the ppa urls in them19:54
CrellYes.19:54
CrellDelete the directory?  Rename it so it doesn't get noticed?19:55
BluesKajremove the text files19:55
CrellAren't I going to need them again later?19:55

BluesKajmithrop, that's info we need to find the correct driver "Radeon Mobility HD 4200"20:52
szalshould be supported by the fglrx driver20:53
mithropBluesKaj: ?? If I reffer to the old configuration way, there is a way to know what is the driver use in this moment in my system not the driver that SHOULD BE use ;)20:54
DarkwingOkay, on laptop now.20:57
Darkwingmithrop: have you checked the kinfocenter?20:58

DarkwingCaptainKnots: turn off desktop effects by default, changes the default window decoration style and tweaks some style-related settings, disables the auto-loading of various KDE modules such as bluedevil, the printer applet,  and some nepomuk bits. mithropgreat :) I'll take a look on your man pages ;)21:06

Darkwingmithrop: I know it's not the direct answer you are looking for but... I think you'll get further there.21:07
genii-around!xorgconf21:08
ubottuThe /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is deprecated, but sometimes may still be needed to  pass values to specific drivers. Generic xorg.conf generation: http://goo.gl/UQyq0  ATI/AMD ( fglrx driver ) specific: http://goo.gl/3pThV NVidia ( nvidia driver  )specific: http://goo.gl/iprqH man xorg.conf for file structure and syntax.21:08
mithropThanks you genii-around. I'm just trying to understand how the system know the driver to use ^^21:09
Darkwingbbiab21:09
BluesKajmithrop, it doesn't at first install , it usually checks the hardware and installs a lower level generic driver that will run most graphics cards of that manufacturer without desktop effects, 3d or DR. Once at he desktop for the first time then you try to install the recommended driver for your particular card , like I described previously21:13
genii-aroundmithrop: Usually it tries to auto-decide what open-source driver to use by what a hardware probe comes back with. If you install proprietary like nvidia or fglrx then you need to tell it in xorg.conf21:14
genii-around( to use that one and not the system default )21:14
mithropBluesKaj & genii-around : oh ok. so for now, the system try to detect the best driver at each boot ? Great :D21:14
