Joe_Running P3 with 128mb ram on dell dimension 4100.  Can not get lubuntu to install. Get to navy blue screen with logo and it never gets further. Looks lie its working but even letting it run overnight, it never finishes.04:32
holsteinJoe_: i would try nomodeset04:32
Joe_Thoughts? Suggestions?04:32
holsteintry forcing vesa, and passing some other options04:32
holsteinother than that, try the LTS version04:33
Joe_Thx. I'm a total newbie, so what does that mean, please.04:33
holsteinwell, LTS is long term support.. i assume you are using verion 11.10, and the LTS is 10.0404:34
Joe_Is that04:35
Joe_Yes! Using 11,1004:35
holsteinright, so you can try the 10.04 version04:36
Joe_So go back to the lts.04:36
holsteinJoe_: you should have the alternate installer too04:36
holsteintry http://releases.ubuntu.com/11.10/ubuntu-11.10-alternate-i386.iso04:37
holsteinor the LTS04:37
Joe_Ok. Why?  Is that downloadable?04:37
Joe_T/ u will try that. Any difference in install procedure?04:38
holsteinJoe_: why?04:38
holsteinbecuase the memory requirements are lower04:39
holsteinthe installer is totally different04:39
holsteinits text based, and ligher on resources04:39
holsteinlighter*04:39
Joe_Ok.  So, there' s no GUI?04:40
holsteinits curses04:40
holsteini dont think you can use the mouse04:40
holsteinbut you dont type commands04:40
holsteinits not rocket science04:41
Joe_I really am new to this.04:41
holsteinJoe_: no worries04:41
Joe_Ok. T/ u04:41
holsteinJoe_: you might have to go to puppy linux for that04:41
Joe_Yes, been reading about that04:42
Unit193holstein: You linked him to Ubuntu alternate, not Lubuntu alternate :P04:50
holsteinUnit193: see?... where you you?04:51
bioterror^__^04:55
bioterrorholstein, http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/11.10/release/04:56
Unit193bioterror: LTS04:56
holsteinbioterror: yeah :/04:56
holsteini dropped the ball04:56
holsteinno good either04:56
bioterrorwe forgive you this time04:56
holsteini dont think that guy will figure it out04:56
holsteinbioterror: hehe04:56
holsteinmaybe it'll install though04:57
holsteinthat will look and seem promising04:57
bioterrormaybe it will be a hilarious experience to find out that he has a ubuntu :D04:57
Unit193https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/GetLubuntu#A10.0404:57
bioterrorUnit193, you have read the mailing list04:58
bioterrorand there has been conversation about how succesful the lts support has been ;)04:58
Unit193Heh, yeah04:58
holsteinwell, the core is supported though04:59
holsteini bet nothing is borked04:59
JackyAlcineThe 10.04, I think, was the best release yet. Worked amazingly well right out the box.04:59
JackyAlcineIf not for that, idt I would have stayed with Ubuntu.05:00
bioterrorbut it is ah so ugly ;)05:00
bioterrorif you compare to 10.1005:00
holsteinbioterror: you know... i think that makes 11.10 look so nice though05:00
bioterror:D05:00
holsteini had checked in around 10.04, and said... 'eh...'05:01
holsteini mean, it ran great, but yeah, it looked a little rough05:01
JackyAlcinelol, it worked!05:01
bioterrorthats kinda like if you watch how bounch of girls moves around05:01
holstein11.10 is just elegant05:01
bioterrorthere's one good looking and one less ;)05:01
holsteinand still light05:01
JackyAlcineand it was free, I needed that at the time.05:01
bioterrorfree is good05:04
genoobiehey all15:36
genoobieI am excited to be download lubuntu!15:37
fabioqchey peoples! new to lubuntu. I just did a minimal install from CD, once at the CLI i did sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop18:31
fabioqcim having trouble opening synaptic packet manager. it's not accepting my password.18:32
fabioqcits asking for the "administrative" password18:32
xsaidxfabioqc: im sorry cant help but why not use apt-get18:36
fabioqcwell im not that versed in the command line.18:37
fabioqcalso lets say im looking for a new application, one that perhaps i haven't heard about.18:38
fabioqci could go into synaptic packet manager and type in the search bar whatever i was looking for.18:38
fabioqcto be honest i just swithed over from XP18:39
Unit193You can apt-cache search from CLI, but the password works using sudo from terminal?18:39
fabioqcsure does18:39
fabioqci've ran many sudo commands and had to type my password18:39
xsaidxfabioqc: i see well you can use lubuntu softwa center its good tho18:39
fabioqcumm i got a phone call. brb.18:40
Unit193Okay, type  gksu synaptic from the terminal and see if there are more errors18:41
fabioqcok back. let me try that command.18:43
fabioqcim new to all the commands also but learning is not too bad18:43
fabioqci think what helps me is my first atari computer or ibm used dos only so i still recall that nice black screen18:43
fabioqcUnit193: gksu synaptic brings up a square box asking me for my administrative password. when i type my password it says incorrect.18:44
fabioqcis it because there is no root user? only me?18:44
fabioqcxsaidx: i dont think i have that preinstalled. or do it? im looking at the "start" menu for it now.18:45
Unit193fabioqc: Look at the terminal window, should have more18:45
fabioqcnothing in the terminal window, just my last command.18:47
xsaidxUnit193: wont be a bad idea if he drops  the  password prompt when he does admin task by editing the sudoes file just to fix this and redit ?18:47
fabioqcfor example i can do sudo apt-get install "whatever" and it'll ask me for my password and it will work fine.18:47
xsaidxfabioqc: type in the console sudo dpkg-reconfigure synaptic18:48
xsaidxand try to use it again18:48
xsaidxUnit193: what about editin the sudoers file ?18:49
fabioqcno dice18:49
fabioqcstill can't get into synaptic, you were telling me about lubuntu software center. where can i find that?18:50
Unit193Might want to just check to make sure it's same as yours18:50
xsaidxfabioqc: did you run update and upgade you system ??18:52
xsaidxfabioqc: try to launch sumthin else18:53
xsaidxlike gksudo leafpad and see if you ll have the same error to see if its related to synaptic only18:53
fabioqcgksudo leafpad did not ask me for my password, it just opened leafpad right away.18:54
fabioqcbtw a lot snappier then xp18:54
fabioqci did go into "update manager"18:54
xsaidxfabioqc: now retry synaptic18:54
fabioqcand it found 10 items which i upgraded and then reboot18:54
Unit193ALright, meeting over, http://askubuntu.com/questions/48215/password-not-working-in-graphical-applications-gksu-works-with-sudo18:54
fabioqcbut those 10 items were all related to PPA500 repository i believe thats for my graphics card18:55
fabioqchaha let me check that link18:55
fabioqcmakes sense18:56
fabioqcworks perfect now by using gksudo18:56
xsaidxUnit193: good shot :] btw i like that community site all the exhange stack  sites are greate18:57
fabioqci changed authentication mode under gksu-properties to sudo (from su)18:57
Unit193It's not bad, and what he just changed should fix it18:58
xsaidxUnit193: tied myself too : ]18:59
fabioqcone last thing, how do i edit eth0 or wlan0 using a gui?18:59
xsaidxnetwork-manager19:00
fabioqcxsaidx and Unit193 I thank you for your help today.19:01
fabioqcI hope you dont mind me hanging around, i just migrated from XP.19:01
fabioqcI'm just trying to set everything up like I had it under XP.. and then i'll buy a book to learn more.19:02
Unit193Just remember to look at the FAQ and maybe check askubuntu/forums ;)19:02
fabioqcNoted! Love IRC though, hope it never goes away hehe19:03
fabioqcwow i cannot find the transmission config folder, can anyone point me in the right direction. i did google search and it said /home/.config19:23
fabioqci dont have that folder19:23
bioterror~/.config/19:25
fabioqc/home/fabio/.config man i feel pretty bad19:25
fabioqci just had to "show hidden files"19:25
xsaidxfabioqc: you have to launch first so it can make its own config i guess19:26
xsaidxlaunch it first then go see19:26
fabioqcOk all done, except the .bin that was generated by transmission has 0bytes (from the 3.5mb .gz file i got from blocklist).. let me tinker some more here.19:31
fabioqcOk fixed, file had to be a .txt file for it to import properly. the .gz file didn't do the trick.19:35
