=== 31NAAAHK8 is now known as Joit
amason_cablop: what do you mean by converting ?00:46
shadrach2amason_:  what can I give you?00:47
cablopi tried before... so i got this issue, each thing has its own login manager, gdm or kdm... if you start a kde session, then you cannot start another user session in the computer if the default is gdm.... same thing if you set kdm, but another user uses unity or gnome, onvce they do, no way to swith or start anew user session...00:47
cablopi installed kde-desktop or something like that, and that thing changed me the colors of login the name of login, everything, even the name on the grub!00:48
amason_shadrach2: me specifically nothing, but the if you provide enough information to the channel they may be able to help. I would start with at least your version of kubuntu, kernel, wifi chipset, any messages in kern.log00:48
shadrach2amason_: ok thanks i'll get that info and post it00:49
cablopso how to install kde to have it almost complete, but not changing the name or other things of my desktop?00:51
amason_cablop: well apt-get install kubuntu desktop just adds the kubuntu desktop to your ubuntu install01:10
cablopamason_: but it should change the grub colors and the linux name to kubuntu, right?01:11
amason_your hostname will be the same as it currently is01:11

amason_you don't need to ask to ask.. you can just ask your question03:17
amason_and if anyone knows they will help03:17
ChamaeleoSorry, new to the channel and unsure of etiquette. I just finished a fresh install of Kubuntu 10.10 on my Macbook (rev 3,1). Everything seems to be working pretty well, except my trackpad. I've tried adjusting the settings for the trackpad, but it works only sporadically and very sluggishly. Are there other drivers or configuration that I need to see to?03:19

Chamaeleo10.10, the 64bit version. On the Ubuntu page, it was listed as the most recent version compatible with my Mac.03:46
ChamaeleoCorrection - on very low sensitivity, it works sluggishly if I keep the whole pad of my finger on the touchpad (as opposed to the tip). If I raise or lower the sensitivity, I get no functionality at all.03:49

NickmhHi All05:10
Nickmhare there any printer gurus awake?05:11
Resistancedefine "printer gurus"05:11
Resistancebecause printers in Ubuntu/Kubuntu are horridly straightforward05:12
Resistanceunless of course there isnt a linux print driver for the printer05:12
Nickmhheh :) A Printer Guru is anyone that can get a brother hl4570cdw working :)05:12
Resistance;P05:12
NickmhPrepare to be annointed :)05:13
Resistancei'm not the guru ;P05:13

NickmhI've installed the .deb package - Lovely,  but the swine driver is not appearing in the Drivers list?05:13

ResistanceNickmh, did you perhaps modprobe the driver?  or perhaps restart with the printer connected to the system?05:14

NickmhIs my imagination allowed to run riot with "modprovbe"?05:15

Resistancebecause the .deb i got from brother (the manufacturer) directly isnt named that05:23
NickmhWhen I go through the Standard settings GUI, the printer appears in the list, I can select it, but then I don't get to the choose the drivers from a list afterwards05:23
Resistanceyou dont really need to iirc :/05:23
Resistanceat least not normally05:23
NickmhAAAhhhh,  you may be onto something05:23

Resistanceyou may just need to reboot05:26
Resistanceand then plug in the printer05:26
Resistanceand hope it works05:26
Resistanceof course, if the debs are broken, its irrelevant ;P05:27
Nickmhit's on the network.  Was it bad not mentioning that?05:27
Resistance(usually i'd just build the driver from source)05:27
Resistanceand yes that might have something to do with it05:27
Resistanceyou should always mention that ;P05:27
Resistancedid you check to see if the linux drivers allow network-printing?05:27
NickmhSorry.  So used to doing eveyrthing over the network,  hadly have anything plugged into this box05:27
* Resistance knows some printers which have network print support in WIndows, but fail to make it work in Linux05:28
NickmhIn windo$ they do05:28
NickmhAAhhh,  that would make sense05:28
Resistancebut yeah you might consider rebooting05:28
Resistanceand then going through the "Add a printer" thing again05:29
Resistancebut fwiw, if its installed, cupswrapper should work05:29
NickmhI can get Web GUI to connect.  http://localhost:631 etc Well, that's what it's telling me it's doing. But I can't get the driver selection to appear.05:29
NickmhHHHmmm  I might just have to kep fighting with it.  try a few things05:30
Resistanceit might not need the driver selection, is what i said05:31
Resistancei've set up CUPS network prints which seem to work without selecting a driver05:31
Resistancebut that's just my system...05:32
* Resistance has some nasty hacks and modifications on his system05:32

NickmhOh Yeh,  I'm too old to beleive "claims"  Show me evidence! :)05:35
NickmhWWooohhhooo,  Found it.  OK.  Lets see what damage we can do from here :)05:37

AndroidLoverInSFi like kde, it has more functionality than unity, but dolphin tends to crash a lot recently in 11.10. also sometimes when i click on the "start-menu" bottom left, it pops up but cant do anything. this tends to happen when non-local drives are not present, but why would it affect the startmenu. i can see why it would cause dolphin to hang. anyway dolphin doesnt handle disconnected drives as well as nautilus it seems. but i still like kde better21:28

BluesKajloadid, which graphics card ? Have you installed the recommended driver in kmenu>apps>system>additional drivers ?21:57
loadidBluesKaj: that would affect grub?21:58
loadidthe video card works, if i hook up a crt monitor21:58
loadidit's just at a frequency my lcd doesn't support, and it changes back to auto from 60hz when i reboot21:59
BluesKajyes it could depend on which graphics mode or whether one is being set at boot in /etc/default/grub22:00
BluesKajloadid, usually lcds like a 50hz setting best , dunno why , that's just my experience22:03
loadidit's an nvidia card, i'll load some different drivers and see what happens22:03
BluesKajloadid, well that's a start for sure , nvidia has additional drivers22:05
BluesKajBBL, stuff to do22:05

92AAABK9MI seem to have a problem booting a kubuntu 11.10 (upgrade).  I get the kubuntu splacsh with the dots under and it hangs. I think it's a video issue because I made some changes to the video card before this problem happened.  question is, how do I get it to boot to a safe mode so I can investigate the issue?23:27
