AlanBellmorning all07:53
Ananyahello all.08:23
Ananyai have a question08:24
Ananyawhen i choose a swap disk while the installation of ubuntu, will the disk be formated?08:24
Ananyaor not?08:24
dwatkinsAnanya: no, but the partition will be wiped.08:25
Ananyaand if i want to revert it back as it was lastly so what to do?08:25
dwatkinsactually, it might have changed recently, but it will certainly have its data cleared out, I think there actually is a little bit of formatting done now, as I've had problems mounting swap partitions from new linux distros on old ones08:26
dwatkinsWhat's the problem?08:26
Ananyai think the drive choosen by me as swap drive was formated.08:28
Ananyacan it happen?08:28
Ananyaand if its really formatted so can i get it back? if yes then how?08:29
Ananyaplease tell me fast i am in a hurry.08:32
dwatkinssorry, was elsewhere08:33
dwatkinsyou downgraded to an older version of Ubuntu and the swap partition can no longer be used?08:33
dwatkinssimple solution: don't use swap08:33
dwatkinsI assume by "get it back" you mean that you want to use this partition with an older release08:34
dwatkinsgparted should be able to format or wipe the relevant partition; as always, of course, ensure there's a backup of any important data etc.etc.08:35
dwatkinsif you need swap in a hurry and have a spare partition with a couple gig free, you can just create a file to use for swap instead.08:37
DJonesThey've quite dwatkins08:40
DJonesquit even08:40
dwatkinsah ok, thanks DJones08:40
DJonesabout 30 seconds after saying were in a hury08:40

DJonesSpeaking of strange headgear, saturday evening, my wife went to her mums get her hair straightened, then put rollers in.......Doesn't one defeat the object of the other08:47
dwatkinsPerhaps it's a bit like formatting a swap partition before using it...08:48
DJonesCould be08:48
DJonesThen she complained because she didn't sleep well because she left teh rollers in all night & they were uncomfortable08:49

knightwisetrue , i checked that the only thing I "need" from amahi is minidlna09:28
dwatkinsI made the mistake of putting 1 TB of data in the same partition as my OS, so reinstalling from CentOS to Ubuntu isn't going to be easy :(09:28
knightwiseand i think its not that hard to install that on ubuntu09:28
popeydwatkins: shrink the partition by 10G, install ubuntu in the 10G09:29

MooDoodavmor2: yes i'll investigate more this evening, but i'll have to be quick as i have a photoshoot on the 14th dec13:33

AlanBellwhat little features?13:40
gordyou can prolly do them in gimp, but it requires about ten times the effort13:40
MooDooeverything content aware related for instance.13:40
MooDoogord your right, cloning takes ages though :)13:41
gordMooDoo, cloning how?13:41
MooDoogord: i mean removing telephone wires in shots for instance or anything that needs removing and you need to clone the area around it with photoshop you can use hightlight it and the app will do the rest13:42

danfishDJones: badda-tish!14:51
AlanBellbest place for Windows 7 embedded14:51
MooDooPMSL14:52
AlanBellMooDoo: high score!14:52
MooDoolol14:53
DJonesI can just imagine somebody playing the skiing game shouting "wheeeeeee" as they go downhill14:53
danfishor "your flow rate's too low - go and see your doctor!"14:54
MooDoohope there is no drumming game14:55
MooDoodrum hero - toilet edition14:55
DJonesMooDoo: Even worse, demolition derby, you've got to swerve your car into your neighbours to knock them off the road...Squelch14:57
MooDooewwwwwwwwwwww14:57
popeydiplo: I wouldnt get a webcam, I'd get a video camera, plug into the mains, point out the back window, run a composite (cheap, easy) cable from the camera to the telly and you're done14:58
popeyall mum needs to do is choose the right input on the telly and she can watch as long as she likes14:58
gordif you get one of them that has those remote controls, she could zoom as well14:59
bigcalmThe fun will be to set up a rotation device14:59
DJoneshmmh,  my wifes NHS trust is giving all the staff toughbooks to keep notes on14:59
danfishDJones: uh-oh. That's gonna be a real smooth ride :/15:00
popeydiplo: i have a friend who works for a company that make software for webcams for this purpose15:00
popeywindows software sadly15:00
DJonesdanfish: Tell me about it, I'm glad I'm not supporting it15:01
DJonesdanfish: I'm more worried about the number of missing Toughbooks after week one (most of the staff work in the community) Things are always getting left behind at clients15:02
danfishDJones: plus car breakins when staff leave the toughbooks on the car seat....15:02
gordwouldn't a note pad do the job just as well?15:04
gordi still use notepads for notes15:04
DJonesdanfish: My wife won't be doing that, she left her handbag on the car seat a couple of weeks ago, one broken window, missing handbag & cash nicked out the bank account15:05
DJonesgord: Have you seen medical staff's handwriting......15:05
DJonesMost of it could be written in a cross between chinese & japanese15:06
danfishI like to throw in a little arabic as well ;)15:07
DJonesProbably some Egyptian hyrogliphics around the edges, although could just be doodles15:08
DJonesdanfish: They were going to give them ipads but decided on the toughbooks15:09
danfishipads would definitely walk!15:10
DJonesHeh15:11

daubersLooking at getting a credit card now as that's the only bloody way I can afford to retake it15:47
MooDoooimon: google ad?15:49
oimonMooDoo: yes, although large picture, not text15:50
MooDoooimon: doesn't surprise me15:50
oimonno, lots of "ubuntu fans" are actually just mac lovers in disguise15:51
MooDoopeople will still click it though15:51

monsterwizardin IRSSI is it possible to use a script that automatically conntects to your fav channels and servers16:44
brobostigonmonsterwizard: irssi can do that on start, on its own.16:44
monsterwizardoh16:45
monsterwizardlol16:45
monsterwizardoops16:45
brobostigonhttp://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/irssi16:45
brobostigongood instructions.16:45
monsterwizardoh thanks buddy16:46
brobostigonyoure welcome.16:46
monsterwizardfeels better than xchat216:46
brobostigon:)16:47
brobostigonalso, vps + screen + irssi + bitlbee, is awfully nice, :)16:47
gordhuh, if you have bitlbee, why would you need a vps+screen?16:48
Laneysame reason you have irssi in screen?16:49
andylockranredundancy :p16:49
brobostigonbitlbee is also alittle useless without an irssi client, to connect to it, :)16:50
gordwell the point i'm making is that bitlbee provides the same function of having irssi in screen, that is a permanent irc connection16:50
chrisjrobirssi without screen is like a fish out of water16:51
brobostigonso can irssi inside screen, do xmpp? or msn etc, without bitlbee?16:51
chrisjrobnot to my knowledge, i understood bitlbee was the only way16:52
brobostigonexactly,16:52
MattJXMPP \o/16:52
brobostigonhence why that is why i have this setup.16:52
chrisjrobanyway, without screen people could be talking about you behind your back16:52
* chrisjrob suffers from paranoia16:53
chrisjrobhave to be connected 24/7 just in case16:53
brobostigonalso, it means i can have all of that, there running, aslong as i have a ssh client. anytime anywhere.16:54
brobostigonvery convinient, and not having to have seperate clients either. especially resource saving on my mobile.16:54
MooDoochrisjrob: that's me, screen + irssi + AUTOLOG :)16:55
monsterwizardirssi is on android?16:55
MooDoowouldn't have thought so, but anything is possible16:55
brobostigonmonsterwizard: running insider screen on my vps, and i then connect to it, with connectbot, and android ssh client.16:55
monsterwizardoh sweet!16:56
Myrttibrobostigon: irssi connectbot I hope16:56
monsterwizardsounds awesomely geeky16:56
brobostigonMyrtti: most definatly. yes.16:56
Myrttithat's what I do, although I don't have a vps16:56
* awilkins used to run irssi inside screen on his router and connect to it with SSH16:56
awilkinsIt negatively impacted the uptime of the router, I think the scrollback would accumulate and fill up the RAM16:57
awilkinsThese days I just limit myself to running IRC when I actually want to be present...16:57
brobostigoninside 6 odd months, irssi has sgefaulted once, due to a fault in a plugin, and that has been it, otherwise stable.16:58
awilkinsOh damn, train16:58
MyrttiI just pay 30EUR per year for a shell account that has my website as well16:58
* Azelphur pays £95/mo for server space \o/16:59
monsterwizardoh god16:59
monsterwizard:916:59
brobostigonmonsterwizard: it is really very simple. and has loads of benefits, as we have descibed.17:02

* MartijnVdS is now officially a Geek®19:59
MartijnVdSI've ordered a patch panel for my home20:00
TheOpenSourcererpah MartijnVdS - I've had a patch panel and 16 port 100Mbps switch in my house since 2000 :-) (House was flood wired with CAT5e in 1999.20:06
MartijnVdSTheOpenSourcerer: I wired the house with Cat5e when I moved in, 6 years ago20:07
MartijnVdSTheOpenSourcerer: I just terminated the wires in RJ-45 connectors instead of a patch panel20:08
MartijnVdSso I have a cupboard full of wires, which I hate20:08
dutchieany folks have any clues why my shiny new build won't boot off a usb stick20:15
directhexboot order isn't set to prioritize usb?20:15
dutchieit will boot, sorry20:15
dutchiei was not particularly clear what "won't boot" means20:16
dutchiei get a load of dmesg-looking stuff scrolling past, ending with stuff about sdb and attaching a scsi removable disk20:16
dutchiethough scrolling up a bit reveals a kernel oops :(20:17
dutchie"BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000000010"20:17
mgdmoooh, exciting20:20
MartijnVdSeeeek20:20
dutchiehow helpful of you two :P20:21
MartijnVdSdutchie: when in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout :)20:21
dutchieheh20:21
dutchiei think it may be nouveau's fault20:22
dutchieis there some boot option magic i can force the proprietary drivers with?20:23
MartijnVdSdo you have them installed/compiled?20:25
dutchiei just made a default amd64 11.10 usb stick, the disk in there has nothing resembling an os on it20:27
Pernigrdblacklist=nouveau works on fedora20:27
Pernigif you type that into your boot options20:27
Pernigcan't remember if that's what to do for Ubuntu though20:28
Pernigmaybe 'nomodeset'20:28
dutchieaha, nomodeset is an improvement20:29
dutchieyay, i have a desktop20:29

gordonjcpmove house?22:26
andylockranConnection just seems awful, when I remove the router it's normally much better..22:26
andylockranDoesn't make much sense to me though - any recommendations/thing to look out for22:28
AlanBellandylockran: wired or wireless connection to your router?22:29
andylockranAlanBell: currently wireless22:29
* AlanBell has a computer with a really rubbish wireless usb dongle22:29
andylockranI'm using my macbook22:29
AlanBelldrops loads of packets and is slow22:29
andylockrandon't seem to get it elsewhere, only at home.22:30
andylockranbut virgin man made me connect direct22:30
andylockranand it worked better22:30
andylockrando VM do anything to their 'own brand' wireless routers (though I believe them to be Netgear too) ?22:30
AlanBelldo "mtr ubuntu.com" for a minute or so22:31
AlanBelland then do the same when plugged in via a wire22:31
andylockranwhen I do that I get packet loss on the edge of the virgin network most the time22:31
andylockrantweeted you22:33

* AlanBell declares quicksynergy to be rather awesome23:10
AlanBell!info quicksynergy23:10
lubotu3`quicksynergy (source: quicksynergy): GUI for easy configuration of Synergy. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.9-1 (natty), package size 24 kB, installed size 176 kB23:10
AlanBellit lets you use your mouse and keyboard across multiple computers next to each other23:10
AzelphurAlanBell: hehe, I was using that about 5 years ago :)23:13
Azelphurit is cool, though23:14
AlanBellnot mind blowing stuff, but I keep finding I am typing stuff on the wrong keyboard so it would be less confusing for me23:18
