sagacijust signed into IRC and got a PM from Lora, [21:23]<Lora>hii sex http://msnlive.info.ms10:25
sagacilooks like in #ubuntu10:25
ikoniaI was just dealing with that now10:25
ikoniathere you go, that should be sorted now10:25
sagacirighteo then10:25
ikoniahello theadmin10:27
theadminHey ikonia10:27
ikoniawhat's up ? (I was just reading your factoid push)10:28
theadminikonia: Well, see, we have the !grub factioid which also contains the link, however sometimes I thought it may be useful to only give the "RestoreGrub" link to avoid confusing people with the other ones.10:28
ikoniai was just reading the restoregrub one, and I don't like the document10:29
ikoniaI agree with what you're saying a seperate factoid would be a good idea to split it out though10:29
theadminikonia: Yeah the document is a mess but I think it's the best we have?10:30
ikoniawell.....that's not a green light to use it10:30
ikoniawould it be possible to work on a new document a MUCH better document10:30
ikoniathen link it10:30
theadminWell, I might, if only I had *any* experience with grub2 -- I was horrified the moment I saw the config file and switched away to the old grub10:30
ikoniawell, I can help you with chunks of it10:32
ikoniaget the layout / structure sorted out, then we can fill in the technical details10:33
theadminHm, well, I must get myself an Ubuntu wiki account first I suppose.10:33
ikoniathat is a good starting point.....yes10:33
ikoniathere is another document I think is needed to marry this one up which is about ubuntu's grub2 install being useless for dual booting linux distros, more a warning that ties in with this one10:34
theadminOh, wait, it uses Launchpad accounts, hm... I think I had one10:34
ikoniaa fair chunk of the re-install grub problems are arrising from people trying to dual boot10:34
theadminikonia: "useless for dual-booting Linux distros"? How so?10:35
ikoniawell, the fact that the control files are held in /etc10:35
theadminikonia: Nothing stops you from writing something custom in /etc/grub.d/ and running update-grub10:36
ikoniait does from other distros10:36
ikoniaas the other distros can't access /etc/grub on the ubuntu system10:36
ikoniabut that's a seperate page10:36
theadminikonia: err... oh... I see.10:36
ikoniaI think those two pages a warning/limitation page and a how to restore would be really useful10:37
theadminWell, it currently does show how to recover with many various methods...10:38
ikoniait's not great and I don't think we should be using the other external CD's10:38
theadminnon-ubuntu ones are a bad idea here indeed10:39
ikoniait bascially gives you 1 command,10:39
ikoniait doesn't explain what to do, what the output should be, how to trouble shoot, how to (more advanced) use the grub shell to fix any issues10:39
ikoniathat's what I mean by a better docuemnt10:40
ikoniadocument even10:40
theadminikonia: Yeah, my point exactly, wasn't sure if that's normal for an Ubuntu doc, I mean... I'm not into that, I usually get my info from the ArchWiki xD10:40
ikoniathe ubuntu docs in the wiki vary from excellent to very poor10:40
ikoniahard to keep track on them all, but the link you've raised through the factoid is something (in my view) that's worth updating and doing a better job with10:41
theadminIt won't let me sign in, acts weirdly10:42
theadmin(I click "Sign on and continue", it goes back to the main page saying I'm signed in, but when I navigate to the article it appears I am signed off... hm)10:42
ikoniaodd10:42
theadmin*hits Ctrl-F5* there we go, much better10:43
ikoniaif you'll spend a bit of time doing a usable layout, eg: introduction, where to get the official tools, preperation, do some stuff, trouble shooting. I'll then help you fill it in with some content10:44
ikoniaonce that's done we can change the factoid and then look at maybe adding a more advanced section10:45
theadminK, I'm working on it, give me a while10:46
ikoniano rush10:46
ikoniajust send me a pm or ping me and we'll get on it10:46
ikoniaI've not wrote any grub2 documentation yet so it will be a good way to brain dump, also Jordan_U has put in a big ammount of effort with grub2, so getting some input and opinions from him would be useful10:47
theadminHey um, what's the official spelling: "Software Center" or "Software Centre"?10:48
ikoniayou're asking a UK guy, bad idea10:48
theadminBy "official" I mean the one used in Ubuntu when LANG=C10:48
ikoniawe can always fix things like that later at review10:48
ikoniadon't worry massive about that sort of thing10:48
theadminOh okay10:48
theadminikonia: Did you by any chance set your client to ignore pms from me? xD I can't seem to reach you there11:04
theadminikonia: I haven't saved it yet, by the way, um, I don't think it's ready enough to do so11:05
theadminikonia: Current state, more or less: https://pzt.me/7kuk11:06
ikonianope, was just away from desk scanning things11:07

ikoniaJordan_U: when you get chance could you review that page, put a cleaner basic update on but would like to grow it12:29
ikoniapersonally I'm not a fan of putting the boot-repair tools in there12:29

Jordan_Uikonia: The terminal instructions in the new grub page will not work. I'm working from my cellphone so I can't easily edit it now. "grub-install /dev/sda" is the same as "grub-install --boot-directory=/boot/ /dev/sda". In a LiveCD environment "/boot" is the squashfs/aufs, not /boot directory of the target system.20:18
Jordan_Uikonia: They can be fixed by adding instructions to mount the target system and pass the correct --boot-directory option or by chrooting in.20:19
Resistancei'm tryin to figure out whether #kubuntu has its own ops channel, does it?  or is this where stuff for it gets reported20:59
Resistance(if the ops trigger is used)20:59
jussiResistance: nah, the highlights come here21:02
Resistancei see21:02
PiciResistance: this channel serves all the Ubuntu core channels (#kubuntu included).  The ops trigger is customized for #kubuntu to list ops that have access there.21:03
