truepurpleWould someone please comment on what is mentioned in this link http://www.esecurityplanet.com/trends/article.php/3933491/Is-Linux-Really-More-Secure-than-Windows.htm01:00
holsteinfor me, its still an issue of user permissions01:13
holsteini say, everyone should do what makes them feel safe as far as security and antivirus01:13
holsteinno doubt android is more and more popular, but thats not really the same as what we have when we run linux on the desktop01:14
holsteinthe typical android user has the level of control that the service provider that made that version of android gives that user01:15
holsteinlets say you install antivirus... is it running as root? likely not01:15
holsteincan it help? i dont know01:15
holsteinyou can run antivirus on ubuntu and other linux distros easily and effectively though, so if its something you are concerned about truepurple , i say go for it :)01:16
truepurpleholstein, yeah but don't most of you think antivirus on linux is a joke?01:19
holsteina joke?01:19
holsteinnah, i dont use personally, but i use live linux distros to scan windows boxes occasionally01:20
truepurpleThat or sacrilege is just about always the kind of reply I get when I mentioned AV  on linux01:20
holsteinand i think folks should use what makes them feel safe01:20
truepurpleYeah ok, but you think its a absurd idea to use AV to scan linux, right? I don't need any placebo, thankyou01:21
holsteinwhat if you had a mail server running linux? and you wanted to have a virus scanner there?01:21
holsteini dont think anyone would argue that use case01:21
holsteinand that is technically 'antivirus on linux'01:21
holsteineven though its not on the desktop01:21
truepurpleSo you don't think the main reason linux is safer is that its smaller thus less targeted? Or that its open source roots present any kind of security problem?01:22
holsteini dont think theres any case where being open has made something more vunerable01:23
holsteinif anything, patches ten to make it in quicker01:23
holsteinpatches tend*01:23
holsteini think the facts are, there are more windows machines01:23
truepurplebut it also makes it easier to find exploits I think?01:24
truepurpleBut that isn't the main reason linux is safer, is it?01:24
holsteinthe typical windows box, and windows user is less secure and security minded than the linux box/user01:24
holsteinis that a correlation?01:24
holsteinwho knows01:24
truepurpleholstein, and where on that link does that mention android?01:24
holsteinall i know is, linux seems to adapt and grow as needed01:25
holsteinand it stays one of the more secure platforms01:25
holstein"Common wisdom has held for years that Linux is superior to Windows when it comes to security issues. But now that open source is growing in popularity both on the consumer side (think Android phones) and the enterprise side (Linux runs the 10 fastest supercomputers in the world, for example, according to Wikipedia), it's time to push past the adage and look again at the whole "which is safer" issue."01:26
truepurpleWell if linux gets bigger, it will become more of a target, and as its userbase gets bigger, they will know less on average01:26
holsteinthe 'think android phones'01:26
holsteinwhich i dont think is similar enough to draw correlation01:26
holsteintruepurple: its still a matter of user permissions to me01:27
truepurpleSo consumer side=android phone for sure?01:27
holsteinwhen the typical windows user runs firefox, thats basically as root01:27
=== Silent is now known as Guest53221
holsteinwhen someone runs firefox for the first time in linux, thats as normal user, with limited permissions01:27
holsteintruepurple: that article is implying that linux and opensource are becoming more popular, and android is an example01:28
holsteinbut, AFAIK, linux and BSD still are the majority of servers out there01:29
holsteinand that seems to not change things as far as whats safe and whats not01:29
holsteini think hackers will always go for the 'low hanging fruit'01:29
holsteini have a nice book caled 'how linux works' http://www.amazon.com/How-Linux-Works-Superuser-Should/dp/159327035601:30
holsteinin there, there is a line 'nothing in linux is hiding from you'01:31
holsteinthats what im saying about android in those cases01:31
holsteinsomething in android is being hidden from you01:31
holsteinthings in windows are hidden01:31
holsteinnothing in linux is, or the typical opensource distros01:31
holsteinyou, and anyone else are totally free to look, find vulnerabilities, report, fix, ignore01:32
holsteinturn services off to improve security01:32
holsteinclose ports01:32
holsteinwhatever you choose really01:33
holsteina linux distro is as safe as you want it to be01:33
truepurpleholstein, what level of linux technical knowledge are you speaking from?01:36
holsteintruepurple: you mean, do i know what im talking about?01:37
holsteintruepurple: ill tell you what i tell everyone01:37
holsteintrust no one01:37
holsteinlook for yourself01:37
holsteinthe code is literally open, and available01:37
holsteinthe documentation... the facts01:37
holsteinall of it01:37
holsteinif someone pastes a command in this channel, you can generally trust that we all have the interests of that user in mind01:38
holsteinbut, drop it into google first... read the man page... check out the source01:38
truepurpleI don't know code, it won't mean anything to me, and I am not saying I don't trust that you have my interest in minde, I was just wondering what exp of yours I should weigh your words with03:03

JackyAlcineHey mirza and fulcrum06:41
JackyAlcinehttp://volatile-minds.blogspot.com/2011/11/can-you-crack-it-nope-i-tried-though.html06:44
mirzaJcackyAlcine, 1'M NOT A HACKER MAN.,06:46
fulcrummirza:  are you a hacker woman?06:47
PobHi all,  I am struggling with an intermittent hibernation issue with 11.10.  Occasionally hibernate fails to complete with "Not enough free memory" and "Error -12 creating hibernation image"08:08
fulcrumPob:  space?08:10
PobI have about 4G of RAM and about 8G of swap.  I have checked the UUID08:10
fulcrumPob:  not sure how it works but I would assume to hibernate you would need at least 4 gigs free on disk?08:11
fulcrumPE08:12
geirhaNeeds at least 4G swap, which pob has...08:16
geirhaPob: Is that one 8G swap partition, or is it spread on multiple partitions?08:16
PobI checked that the UUID in fstab matched the UUID of the swap partition, and that "swapon -s" shows the correct partition.  Also my swap does not appear to be used at all "0 used"08:17
Pobhmmm?08:17
fulcrumgeirha:  does your hibernation image need to include swap? does Pob need 12 a 12 gig hibernation image?08:17
geirhafulcrum: No, it only needs to hold the RAM08:18
PobI believe from what I have read  is that swap must be large enough to hold RAM size08:18
fulcrumyes would make sense08:18
geirhaPob: There is another file, somewhere, which says which swap-partition to use for hibernation, but for the life of my I can't remember where or what it's called.08:19
PobOne thing I have noticed is that if I have Virtualbox running, it is more likely to fail'08:19
fulcrumPob:  interesting...08:19
Pob/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume08:20
Pobwhich also contains the correct UUID08:20
geirhaAh, there it was.08:21
PobIs there a log file I could check to see if there is more info08:21
geirhaI'd check /var/log/messages and possibly dmesg08:32
Pobcheers, I will check that out.  I just did a hibernate with vbox running and it work, so it isn't related to that by the looks of it.08:33
