insinHi, I recently installed 11.10 - my first real go at linux. I just logged out for the first time and when I log in, it flashes up the usual "Starting... Checking battery state" stuff then dumps me back to the login screen. The last thing I was doing before logging out was playing with setting PS1 in my profile by loading another script. Any ideas what could be wrong?02:12
insinI'm unable to login as root (was never prompted to set up a password for it - d'oh) and it seems like the guest account isn't allowed to use sudo02:12

stahlfausthi, just installed xubuntu, but cant use 1024x800 resolution... i have a sis mirage3 card, and i googled it but it only seems to be a way on unity... HELP!!03:58
bazhangunity on xubuntu ?04:09
Mp5shooterI don't think so bazhang04:23
bazhangMp5shooter, exactly. stahlfast was asking about that though04:23
shevek_I just had to add the --laf option to netbeans to get gtk look and feel. It doesn't honour swing.properties, or use gtk by default.08:39
shevek_Is there any way to make it by default?08:39
Sysishevek_: you could cp /usr/share/applications/netbeans.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/ and mousepad ~/.local/share/applications/netbeans.desktop08:56
Sysiedit exec-line to be what you need08:56
Sysichech that file and folder names are correct and exist08:56
shevek_Sysi, I'm more concerned that a java app didn't honour swing.propreties. I know I can do it for any individual app.09:13
shevek_let me try some other apps, maybe nb is special09:13
shevek_Also, if you're familiar with thunderbird, is it treating my "sent-mail" folder magically, since it doesn't appear in the folder tree?09:14
shevek_google has at least one screenshot with a visible 'sent-mail' folder in thunderbird... but mine shows in evolution but not thunderbird.09:15
shevek_Actually, tbird isn't showing about 3 of my folder hierarchies, it's not just 'sent-mail' that's missing.09:16
shevek_I'll wait, maybe they'll appear.09:16
SysiI don't really know about java apps or thunderbird09:22
shevek_I worked out the tbird thing. Just had to wave a chicken over it09:29
shevek_ha. That's better09:29
shevek_shevek received 30279 new messages, it says09:29
shevek_the editing the .desktop thing doesn't work because I still think it's 1994 and run everything from an xterm09:31
shevek_xubuntu still rocks btw09:31
shevek_some stuff's a bit iffy, but that's what you expect from linux. It's basically all there.09:32
shevek_Some dev needs to 'add a launcher for a program as item 2 of a panel'09:33
shevek_since, you have to go to panel, add item, then it adds a blank item as the last item on the panel09:34
shevek_then you have to go to panel prefs, and wind it all the way up to item no.2, then open the edit thing for it, and add the app to the launcher09:34
shevek_and meh09:34
shevek_it's linux, this is normal09:34
shevek_oh dear god, video works :-)09:35
shevek_now I can cam409:35
=== cipi is now known as CiPi
Sysishevek_: 11.04 or 11.10? you can just drag from menu09:46
Sysion 10.04 you should get popup to set up launcher when you add it09:46
CiPiWho know what is with all the usernames in /etc/passwd ? For what use are them, and why the usernames are there? And if they can be deleted?09:47
shevek_CiPi, I know. They are used by subsystems which operate with their own privileges, so that all subsystems are isolated from one another by the security mechanism. Your system will break if you delete them.09:49
CiPiThanks alot.09:50
shevek_The rule of unix is that root is allowed to shoot himself firmly in the foot.09:50
CiPiOne time all this usernames was vulnerable in the hackers ssh scanners.09:52
CiPiwww-data:x:33:33:www-data:/var/www:/bin/sh09:52
CiPibackup:x:34:34:backup:/var/backups:/bin/sh09:52
CiPiAll of them.09:52
shevek_well09:53
CiPiThey had stupid passwords like backup:backup09:53
shevek_those usernames should have * for a password09:53
shevek_and a shell of /bin/false09:53
shevek_and your ssh daemon should not allow password logins09:53
CiPiI don`t have the ssh installed, now I`m talking in general... i just asking how this works...09:54
Sysithat vulnerability must've been AGES ago09:54
shevek_Various things need their own security ids to keep them isolated.09:54
shevek_thinking of which, can I reasonably prevent statd and rpcbind from starting...09:56
shevek_*hunts*09:56
CiPiSysi, I`m not so sure about it... :)09:56
CiPiOn a server ar this stupid usernames with /bin/sh are really risky...09:57
dirtycookiei have attachted a external monitor onto my laptop, but how do i "extend" my desktop? and not cloning my displays09:58
shevek_CiPi, If you decide to remove them, please do it on your equipment, not your employer's equipment. Your employer is likely to be unhappy.09:58
shevek_dirtycookie, nvidia-settings for nvidia. I'm not familiar with ATI yet09:58
CiPiI know the system crashes :))09:58
shevek_guh. ati's ui is ugly, and useless. nvidia's is ok.09:59
dirtycookieshevek: i have a eeePC which has an intel chip09:59
shevek_uhm, is there a video settings icon in the notification area? no idea, sorry10:00
Sysidirtycookie: arandr10:00
dirtycookieSysi: arandr10:00
dirtycookie??10:00
Sysi!info arandr10:00
shevek_used to be xrandr10:00
ubottuarandr (source: arandr): Simple visual front end for XRandR. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.1.4-1 (oneiric), package size 48 kB, installed size 376 kB10:00
Sysiaka. app what does what you want10:00
CiPidirtycookie, graphic cards should work by default in Xubuntu/ubuntu/kubuntu10:01
CiPiI have a netbook also, and a really new model...10:02
CiPiAnd all is working well.10:02
dirtycookieCiPi: well when i press Fn+F5 to switch around monitors, i only get one or the other OR cloned10:02
shevek_my knowledge is a bit outdated on this, but fn+f5 used to trigger a hotkey thing in /etc/acpi/scripts which would then communicate with /proc/acpi/... to set the video output10:03
shevek_however, nowadays it's probably all changed10:04
shevek_So, play with arandr, which is actually capable of changing the video resolution, which is what's required to extend a screen10:04
CiPiI don`t know...my Fn key works for the video and sound...10:04
shevek_ooooh, notification-daemon says I received 134,641 new messages. Email's working then.10:05
CiPi:)10:05
shevek_yes, apparently now acpi keys generate input events by magic10:07
SysiCiPi: if you have gnome-services started on startup you get dualhead by default, normally it's cloned10:20
CiPiI don`t know if I have...10:21

shevek_So, what's the modern equivalent of taking a service out of a runlevel?10:30
shevek_I want potrmap and statd not to start at boot, but they seem to be hooked into some enormous dependency tree10:30

TheSheeprafael_: try that link14:37
rafael_there was a nice gui in gnome14:37
rafael_and I know I can do it in nvidia settings14:38
rafael_but I cant install them14:38
rafael_I can't install the nvidia driver14:38
rafael_i assume the problem is the missing /etc/X11/xorg.conf file14:40
EgilTheSheep, thanks for helping with my Synaptic problem. It turned out all my menu defs wereto  also lost. I decided to reinstall Xubuntu, which I'm doing right now. Will be back :)15:06

egilTheSheep, I'm back. Fresh install of Xubuntu 11.10. Have ran the update manager to get all updates. Synaptic crashes. From terminal trying "sudo synaptic" : It just crashes with no error message. Trying just "synaptic" it crashes with "Memory segment fault" (error message translated from Norwegian)15:53
