TransX2Hey you guys, would it be okay if i asked a hardware question? I do run lubuntu. Lol01:24
TransX2I got a Everex IMPACT GS3005, AMD based. I have for USBs in the back. None of them work with anything other than a mouse...01:29
TransX2*four01:29
TransX2And when i boot it just keeps saying, "can not enumerate usb on port four".01:30
calamarihi.. just spent the last hour trying to figure out why my printer wouldn't work on 11.10 under acroread (non-ubuntu package). solution was I needed to install cups-bsd (which replaces the lpr program). also installed foomatic-db-engine to give myself better resolution02:35
TransX2Are you talking to me?02:36
calamarinot talking to anyone in particular just sharing knowledge I gained :)02:36
micahgcalamari: I think we have a bug open for that02:37
TransX2Would you know anything about my USBs working only with a mouse?02:37
calamarimicahg: really? I figured there wouldn't be since acroread is not a supported package02:37
TransX2I mean the only thing they work with is a mouse.02:38
calamariTransX2: do you have usb 1.1 or usb 2.0?02:38
micahgcalamari: I believe it's part of bug 88491102:38
ubot5Launchpad bug 884911 in lubuntu-meta (Ubuntu Oneiric) "Missing dependency in lubuntu-desktop to foo2zjs (Printer drivers)" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/88491102:38
TransX2 i have both enabled in the bios02:39
calamarimicahg: excellent, thanks!02:39
calamariglad it's already fixed02:39
TransX2?02:40
=== JackyAlcine is now known as how
=== how is now known as when
calamariTransX2: I was talking to micahg :)02:43
TransX2I know.02:43
=== when is now known as because
=== because is now known as JackyAlcine
calamariTransX2: ah ok.. does lsusb tell you it's "Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub"?02:44
calamariTransX2: and what other device are you trying to use, I think I came in after you mentioned that02:44
TransX2Well i have four in the back. Now my wifi adapter works, along with my mouse. But my keyboard still doesn't work.02:46
TransX2What is lsusb?02:47
calamariTransX2: it's a console program that lists some brief info about the usb devices in your system02:48
TransX2Should i download it?02:49
TransX2Lol02:49
TransX2I tried downloading isusb from the synaptic package manager but it's not there03:01
TransX2Only sis usb display driver, and it's installed03:02
yonyonit is possible to install compiz on LXDE?04:44
holsteinyonyon: its in the repos04:59
holsteinits not unlike this05:00
holsteinhttp://xubuntublog.wordpress.com/2007/12/09/xubuntu-compiz-pretty-pretty-xubuntu/05:00
yonyonyeah but it doesn't work05:03
yonyoncairo-dock still poping a warning about no coposite manager installed05:03
holsteinyonyon: you'll need to install compiz, and run compiz --replace05:04
holsteinyou'd need to decide how you want to run that each time05:04
holsteinyou'll also need the proper graphics driver in some cases05:04
holsteini find that compiz check script handy, though the dev over at #compiz said it was useless, and asked that i not suggest it05:05
holsteinif you want a nice light bar, try wbar :)05:06
yonyoncompiz --replace  hide the lxpanel05:06
holsteinprobably... there are a few things you'll need to sort out for sure05:07
holsteini usually run that in a terminal for a while til i get it all sorted out05:08
yonyononly one warning: failed to load theme "adwaita"05:14
holsteinnot bad... i would expect some breakage til you sort it all out05:14
Folkloreany know why it takes so long for the system to clean stuff up?I got a server I run via terminal05:19
Folklorewhen I exit the terminal takes like 5 minutes of trying to run the server again to get the OS to let me bind the socket05:19
Folkloreis really annoying05:20
Folkloreps shows no other processes05:20
Folklorenetstat -l shows nothin listening on it05:20
Folkloream running lubuntu in vbox05:22
Folklorehave my host machine port forward to the vbox so I can reach my client os on real ip05:23
Folkloreguess no one knows05:31
Folklorewhat about lubuntu ARM05:31
Folkloreis that comin?05:31

dustmanhi16:07
dustmanI've got a problem with LXDE handling monitor's resolution16:08
dustmanit sets it to 1280x1024 at every new log in, while I changing it to 1280x960 again and again16:09
dustmancan LXDE be forced to remember correct screen resolution, or should I create/edit Xorg.conf?16:10
holsteindustman: i would probably try a custom xorg.conf16:12
dustmanholstein: ty16:12
dustmanholstein: where are Xorg configuration is located by default?16:15
holsteinsame as usual, AFAIK... /etc/X11/xorg.conf16:16
holsteinthere shouldnt be one there... i usually fire up a knoppix live CD and grab the one from in there16:17
dustmanty again, changed something by hand ages ago16:17
dustmanholstein: just created .xprofile with xrandr line16:28
dustmanworks now16:28
holsteindustman: :)16:45
dustmanoriginally I installed Ubuntu 10.something and upgaded it several times, but with 11.10 switched first to Xfce and now to LXDE17:49
dustmanwhich meta-packages can be killed w/o much trouble=17:49
dustman?17:49
holsteindustman: depends17:51
holsteindustman: what do you want? XFCE? you can install xubuntu-desktop, and see if that gest you what you want17:51
holsteini wouldnt worry about clearing out the other stuff unless you are tight on hard drive space17:52
dustmanholstein: no, i'm content with lxde17:52
holsteindustman: so, that would be lubuntu-desktop17:52
dustmangot three session managers, several separate screen servers etc.17:53
dustmanholstein: yep, installed it yesterday and it works fine17:53
dustmanfar better than xfce imo17:53
holsteindustman: like i say, unless you just want to save hard drive space, i wouldnt worry about it too much17:53
dustmansure, disk space is abundant but having tons of crap just bugs me17:54
dustmancan't remember last time I used something like Thunderbird of Evince17:55
holsteinit should be obvious though... if you want to look at all the screensavers for instance... mark one for removal, see what wants to be uninstalled... some of them will be connected to the ubuntu-desktop, some to xubuntu-desktop17:58
holsteini find sometimes this is just not elegant, and sometimes packages you *dont* want gone, want to get removed17:59
holsteinyou can hide them in the menu as well17:59
dustmanproblem is that I installed some stuff using meta-packs and to remove them one needs to mark separate packages one by one18:02
holsteindepends18:02
dustmanhard to know what requiered and what not18:03
holsteindustman: you can look through the list18:03
holsteinagain... if hard drive space isnt an issue, i say, dont sweat it18:04
dustmanholstein: I'm bit paranoid and prefer to have only things I use18:05
holstein?18:05
holsteinif i were "paranoid", a fresh install would be the only thing that would put my mind at ease18:05
holsteinotherwise, how do you know? a package list?18:06
dustmanheh18:06
holsteinthats availalbe somewhere18:06
dustmantrue18:06
holsteinbut again.. its a lot of hassle for something that literally might reclaim 90mb's of hard drive space18:06
holsteinand gain nothing else18:06
dustmank, you're right18:06
holsteinexcept clearing out the GUI menu, which you can do with or without removing those apps18:07
holsteindustman: i have xubuntu... i installed lubuntu-desktop18:07
holsteinwhen i purge that, and reboot, the screen is black ;)18:07
holsteini put it back, and decided to try again later18:07
holsteincan i sort that out? sure... but i also have work to do18:08
dustmanbtw, does lubuntu have something like F-Spot but simpler?18:09
holsteindustman: lubuntu has f-spot18:09
holsteinits all the same repos18:09
wxlf-spot is gtk?18:09
holsteinthere are lots of image editors/organizers18:09
dustmanpity... later version(s) got too complicated18:09
holsteini personally just use the file manager to manage files, even pictures18:10
dustmannot for managing files, but to quickly modify pics, like rotation, crop, etc.18:10
holsteinyup... i would probably just do that in the gimp, since thats what im comfortable with... but there are lots of open projects available18:11
dustmannow even opening files in a new directory is a hassle18:11
dustmangimp is big and I never had big use of it18:12
dustmanplus my wife is a pro with photoshop18:12
holsteinim not suggesting you use it... im just saying, thats what i use, and i use it in any *buntu version18:12

dustmanapt-get missing that :)18:16
wxlyou can install metapackages in apt18:16

ArnieeI am getting this screen and it doesnt move18:57
Arnieehttp://s7.postimage.org/6w1san7iz/Image0248.jpg18:57
wxlArniee: curious. how are you installing and on what architecture?18:58
ArnieeTrying it on my old PC . AMD Athlon 3200+ 256MB ram18:59
ArnieeATI M/b18:59
Arnieexpress 200 series18:59
wxlwhat method are you using to install? and what version?18:59
Arnieethe latest one.  I am using usb install19:00
Arniee11.1019:00
wxllatest as i12 12.04a1?19:00
wxluhh s/i12/in19:00
ArnieeThe same usb runs on my laptop19:01
wxlyou're booting to usb?19:02
ArnieeI am booting from usb , yes19:02
ArnieeI used that universal pendrive installer19:02
wxltry acpi=off as a boot option19:02
wxldid you get the 64 bit version btw?19:03
Arnieeno19:03
Arnieethe i386 one19:03
wxlwhy?19:03
ArnieeHa. just19:04
wxlwell i'd try 64bit first19:04
wxlthen try acpi=off19:04
Arnieeyou get that option in boot screen?19:05
ArnieeF6 or something?19:05
wxlyeah something like that :)19:05
wxlsorry, it's been a while since i had to both but i think it's f619:05
wxlthis, btw, is not a lubuntu-specific problem19:05
wxlmany ubuntu users reported the same issue19:05
ArnieeIt migt be about my hardware19:05
Arnieemight19:05
ArnieeCuz the same usb runs on another pc19:06
ArnieeDoes it have anything to do with ATI? I wonder19:06
wxlyeah sounds like it's an issue with the acpi on the system19:06
ArnieeI should try that.19:06
ArnieeThanks a lot19:06
ArnieeBye19:06
wxlmy bet is that you run acpi=off and get it installed and once you're in, upgrade the kernel, and you'll be good19:06
Arniee;)19:07
wxlseriously get a new kernelasap19:07
Arnieeok. I just hoped I'd make use of the old pc19:07
ArnieeBye thanks19:07

demosfari tried already that and STA drivers and don't work22:42
holsteindemosfar: that?22:43
holsteinthe several suggestions in that wiki page? or installing firmware-b43-installer ??22:43
demosfari wanted to say that firmware-b43 didn't help me also22:43
demosfarneither STA drivers22:44
holsteindemosfar: wanted?22:44
holsteinim not following you22:44
holsteinthere are 2 different options there are that wiki page, have you tried both?22:44
holsteinAFAIK, you need to reboot to get those loaded into the kernel22:44
demosfaryes i know...i rebooted but wireless led on laptop never lighted...and i wasn't able to see any wifi networks22:45
holsteindemosfar: i would double check the hardware switches as well22:46
demosfarhow to check that?22:47
holsteindemosfar: really depends on your hardware... theres usually a switch, or a funciton key combonation22:47
demosfarokay...i did that...i tested everything...don't work :S22:48
demosfarwhen i type rfkill22:48
demosfari check about software lock22:48
holsteindemosfar: you can run lspci... if its listed there, thats a good start22:49
holsteinthen, you can try the options at that wiki page22:49
demosfarcan you find me that page?22:49

bkmhello, anyone having problems with the display of gmail using chromium-browser on lubuntu-oneric? it looks like gmail thinks i have a 640x480 display22:55
holsteinbkm: hit control+0 to make sure its not just that22:56
holsteini have *not* noticed any issues22:56
bkmholstein++ interesting!22:56
bkmnow it's about 100 x 100 px22:57
bkmmaybe gmail thinks i'm on a phone...22:57
holsteincontrol and + increases, control and - decreases... control 0 should go default22:57
demosfarhow to see what interface my wifi uses?22:58
bkmright, so the question is, what have i or google done to make the default 100x100 pixels?22:58
holsteindemosfar: you have wifi now? thats great! :)22:58
demosfarwell i have it...but don't work..i cannot see any wireless network... :(22:59
holsteinbkm: i think its safe to assume its not google...22:59
holsteindemosfar: maybe just take a few minutes to get aquainted with the network manager23:00
bkmholstein: i guess i should just start turning off extensions?23:00
demosfarwifi led don't start..so i doubt that i will manage to connect to the wireless :S23:00
Unit193bkm: Do you happen to have another browser to try?23:01
holsteinbkm: i would probably just create another user account, or look for where ever chromium stores its data in /home23:01
holsteinconfirm if its system wide, or just local user config23:01
bkmholstein: yeah, that might be filling up the partition, come to think of it. thx!23:02
bkmholstein: gmail looks fine in firefox - still trying to find some ~/.config/ files to get rid of...23:24
