[04:04] Do I need libbonobo2-0 in Xubuntu? [10:07] hello [10:08] what is the system in *ubuntu that allows removable disks to be automatically mounted when they're inserted, without any entry for them in fstab? [10:09] also with the correct user perms [10:10] is there some kind of setuid daemon somewhere? [10:10] <_Pete_> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount/USB [10:10] I'll take a look [10:11] it also works for cd/dvd/... media I think, not just USB drives [10:14] they say to use gconf-editor to configure automouting [10:14] <_Pete_> maybe then what you look is hal ? [10:14] though, isn't that for gnome? [10:14] <_Pete_> apt-cache show hal|less [10:15] hald-addon-storage ? [10:15] <_Pete_> Description-en: Hardware Abstraction Layer [10:16] must be it [10:16] <_Pete_> or udev [10:16] <_Pete_> or combination of those :) [10:28] erm. Whenever I try to select a package fo installation in Synaptic, it gives a warning that it's not authentified. kezako? [10:29] I'm on 10.10 [10:35] same with apt === CiPi is now known as cipi [13:54] hi, I'm installing 11.10 xubuntu as a second OS (other is win7). How to I choose "device for boot loader installation"? [15:28] ubuntu_: if you have only one hard drive, you choose it [15:29] the windows bootloader will only boot windows, so if you want to dual boot, you can install the one most linux distros use by default which is grub, and grub will boot most os's... ubuntu, windows... [15:29] holstein: that's not strictly true [15:30] yeah? [15:30] holstein: windows bootloader does have some very limited support for other operating systems [15:30] well, the windows loader will add ubuntu in a wubi install [15:30] holstein: but I wouldn't touch it with a 10' pole [15:30] it will support other windows OS's [15:30] it goes without saying! ;) [15:31] i have not experienced it picking up any linux OS i have thrown at it [15:31] holstein: it doesn't pick it up automagically, you have to configure it manually [15:31] but, i have not had grub fail to automatically add any linux OS [15:31] holstein: in a text file [15:31] TheSheep: would you like to share that file with ubuntu_ ? [15:32] i see no real down sides to using GRUB... if you know how to restore the MBR from a windows disc, and get back to where you are now [15:33] i suppose i should not say 'the windows bootloader will only..' [15:33] i should say "it will only automatically pickup windows" [15:35] I don't know the details, I suppose you can find them in windows documentation [15:38] http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/908148-adding-ubuntu-1004-to-windows-7-bootloader/ [15:38] ^ is stating what i was understanding... that it was an ext* issue, and the windows bootloader *cant* do it [15:39] im sure there is a way, though i think the ideal way is to just migrate to GRUB [15:40] this looks interesting http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/ === ubuntu_ is now known as crazymutex [15:49] erm. === cipi is now known as CiPi [16:44] Just wanted to leave the solution to my "windows not snapping to the top of the bottom panels" problem: In workspace properties, I set the lower margin to the total thickness of the 2 panels [19:05] I'm having trouble with libreoffice and xubuntu 10.04. I'm not sure how to describe it, other than things go wonky when I resize windows. They get a jittery look to them (the edges) and the difference (the new part of the window now that it's bigger) doesnt' show anything in it. Inside of where the previous boundaries were is unchanged. [19:08] try doing a minimize and maximize again [19:09] charlie-tca, no go. Do you get what I mean though? [19:10] yes, and sometimes minimize and maximize the window makes it work [19:11] I thought Xubuntu 10.04 used OpenOffice, though [19:11] charlie-tca, it does, by default. [19:12] If you added LibreOffice to it, you might have problems that can not be fixed, then. [19:12] I think it's probably xubuntu specific. Regular ubuntu lucid boxes I use to have any trouble [19:12] don't have, not to have.. [19:12] I suspect it is LibreOffice specific, myself === Crash is now known as Guest19181 [19:55] Im use to notepad++ what a good alternate? === Guest19181 is now known as Crash-OD [19:56] gedit is nice [19:56] geany [19:57] GridCube, geany isn't really feature-paired with notepad++ :P [19:57] well its like the best option [19:57] Gedit already installed or meed download? [19:57] don't know. gedit is a good replacement [19:57] needs [19:57] Crash-OD, you need to install [19:58] Software center not showing it [19:59] sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gedit [19:59] thanks so much [20:00] I'm having an issue with the installation of nfs-common right now [20:00] it installs fine but then it tries to set up rpcbind and falls flat on its face, like so http://paste.ubuntu.com/763064/ [20:01] i'm on an 11.10 live usb if that makes a difference [20:07] I opened in gedit the sources.list via file open. but will not let me save the list [20:07] its it yours? [20:07] i mean y [20:07] do you have ownership? [20:08] I'm the only user on this box [20:08] actually [20:08] nope, you are you and root [20:08] well true [20:09] if the file is owned by root you need to gksu gedit [20:10] thank you [20:11] :) [20:12] seems when I go in the software center and trying add 2 sources.list it does not seem to get it right in cause issues some finding out that I have to manually edit the sources.list [20:13] software-center su... its not good, use synaptic [20:13] or just aptitude [20:13] that's the easiest thing to do [20:14] or apt-get :P [20:15] I've started using aptitude now because it's nice enough to clean up packages I don't need anymore for me [20:15] now really i havent been able to use the sc since like i've installed oneiric, it just doesnt work [20:15] and in every test i do to try to replicate its behaviour in other machines just fails and the sc just opens XD [20:16] the software center works for me but it's amazingly slow [20:16] sometimes I do some window shopping in it but I never really use it for serious installing [20:17] same situation for me, I rarely use the SC [20:17] I prefer Synaptic or apt-get command lines [20:17] I'm trying to use virtualbox to have windows f l p it asks for me to hit control alt delete an end up kicking me out of linux [20:18] yes [20:18] :P [20:18] use the super key [20:20] laugh out loud, are username and password I set up during install is not working lol [20:20] for the windows [20:20] thank goodness for the administrator account [20:47] got a bit of a odd happenings here, my main desktop disappears on startup and i am greeted with a different blue desktop [20:51] freemason1977: did you install nautilus? [20:52] no [20:52] is it installed? [20:52] although nautilus is installed [20:52] just uninstall it [20:52] some upgrade must have pulled it in [20:56] brb === tekno|afk is now known as teknoduke [21:36] is it ok to remove the 'colord' package (and associated icc profiles) w/out ill-effects? I don't have a colour printer or do any image manipulation. [21:38] !info colord [21:38] colord (source: colord): system service to manage device colour profiles -- system daemon. I have installed the driver you mentioned but no luck. The driver is showing as enabled but the wireless option is greyed out [22:01] jonathan_: make sure its not a hardware switch thing [22:01] it's not that [22:01] double check there and in the bios [22:01] jonathan_: not because im saying you are not smart... but double check anyway [22:01] what broadcom chip/laptop? [22:02] you need to reboot after installing driver ofc [22:03] dell 1520, broadcom 4311 [22:04] its not showing under sudo lsmod [22:05] I did some command that showed it was blacklisted but the code to solve that didn't work [22:12] buona sera [22:13] c'è un italiano? [22:14] non so come funziona [22:15] !it | eugenio [22:15] eugenio: Vai su #ubuntu-it se vuoi parlare in italiano, in questo canale usiamo solo l'inglese. Grazie! [23:07] you could have ssh running and use something that would do that... rsync? [23:07] something that just writes the differences
