cryojenxHey, I'm having problems with desktop effects on my system. I have an integrated Intel chipset and when i turn on effects they work brilliantly, until I log out. When I try to log back in, during the login process OpenGL crashes and kicks me back to the login screen, where I can login properly but with effects disabled. Any ideas?05:59
Joitmay a better graphic driver?06:00
Joitbtw anyone knows a good paint program for linux?06:01
cryojenxpossibly, not sure where to get one tho, im a bit of a noob still06:01
cryojenxI use GIMP for my graphics needs06:01
Joitit to complicated anyhow for my needs06:01
cryojenxaah06:02
cryojenxoverkill06:02
Joiti only need to mess around with some faces or scanned docs or make some squares06:02
Joiti will look for that06:02
Joiti used artweaver at windows, was kinda handy06:03
Joitcryojenx:  but with your desktop it sounds like anything is messed there, as if it dont store your esttings06:04
Joitsettings06:04
cryojenxwell its a fresh install, and it tries to load effects then crashes, so i think its saving the settings, but just goes into a failsafe mode when it crashes06:05
Joiti did go for a different driver for my nvidia card, its at system - Hardware driver06:07
cryojenxi tried "additional drivers" it didnt find any others available for my hardware :p06:08
Joitthat sucks, because i could choose a few. you may need admin rights to save it?06:09

Joitwell did you pick another driver?06:18
Joitif you can do that06:18
cryojenxdidnt have the option, it said no proprietary drivers on the system06:18
cryojenxoh well, I'm looking into upgrading to a proper graphics card anyway06:20
Joiti did search for " intel graphic kubuntu crash effects" at the net06:20
cryojenxya, I'm not so great with search engine results. got Asperger's and have difficulty parsing the mass of unrelated info it throws at me to find the right result :p06:25
Joiti would allways look for the result what do match best at your keywords and the descriptions sounds sane, else there comes so much junnk out06:25
cryojenxya, it's crazy all the unrelated crap you get06:27
Joityes, it was way better at earlier times, but in the meantimes you get all the jerks at page 106:28
Joitdo you know the revision number from your intel chipset?06:28
Joiti just know that intel was allways difficult under windows, not sure if they did fix it now06:29
Joiterr under linux06:29

Joiti spend so much times to go through all this pages all time, spendign hours and no solution06:38
cryojenxsomeone really needs to design a better kind of search engine. its funny how MS's ads for Bing made it seem like the answer but it was all PR06:38

jmichaelxnow this whole preview thing....06:39
cryojenxagreed RE: Google06:39
Joitwell there is also a lot of advertising at the web its not only good informations anymore06:39
Joitbest you can come through to use very specific keywords, to get good results06:40
cryojenxya, the commercialization of the net has really made things worse IMO06:40
Joitand well, i still look up for that driver, but cant get a lot out06:40
jmichaelxi wind up using '-some_word_i_want_excluded' a lot06:40
Joitcryojenx:  yes, thats it06:40
Joitlol, may not a bad idea to search over excluded words06:41
cryojenxya will try that06:41
Joitcryojenx:  did you see that ? but its more about acceleration https://wiki.kubuntu.org/X/UxaTesting06:42
* jmichaelx would love to know just how many linux users have some form or autism or another06:42
cryojenxno didnt see it, I'll look tho06:43
cryojenxjmichaelx I would gues a VERY large number06:43
Joitjmichaelx: i think that will depends on the daytime too and how much are on, to get a answer on that06:43
Joitcryojenx:  you use the 64bit version from kubuntu?06:44
cryojenxya06:44
jmichaelxmy guess would also be that the percentage of autistics among linux users is much higher than with other OS's06:44
jmichaelxsorry for all the OT here06:45
cryojenxI would think it would hold true for open source OSes across the board06:45
jmichaelxyea, i would agree06:45
cryojenxtheres that fascination with understanding how the guts of a system tick, like when I was a kid i would take my electronic toys apart to try and figure out how they worked06:46
Joitcryojenx:  there is a bug about something, says eax? will not work with intel ? but not sure if that match for you https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/252094?comments=all06:46
ubottuLaunchpad bug 252094 in xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu Karmic) "MASTER: Poor graphics performance on Intel" [Wishlist,Fix released]06:46
cryojenxhmm, EAX is a sound thing i believe06:46
jmichaelxautistic people tend to break everything down to their smallest bits06:47
JoitEXA is it06:47
cryojenxoh ok hold on06:47
Joitwell, i learned not to learn all time how anything works, especially linux, because its to big to get behind it, and thats why a lot peoples work on it. you need to specify yourself today, because anything is mostly made overcomplicated06:48
=== ubuntu is now known as dinacicc
Joitits mostly more efficient to be focused as interested in all06:49
Joitbut i did do that too, and take a lot things apart :)06:49
cryojenxwell what I'm doing is learning about the hardware components first, and then working my way up from there to the software level06:49
Joiti see.06:50
* jmichaelx LOVES the hardware06:50
Joiti actually wait for a working driver, or replace the hardware06:50
cryojenxhaha, i love it when ppl get linux running on their Sega Dreamcast or Digital camera06:50
jmichaelx:-D06:51
Joiti had the problems early times in linux, and the best thing was to look for compatible hardware06:51
cryojenxya, well again, i was planning on upgrading the card anyway, the performance of the integrated chipset is crap on Second Life06:51
Joiti never saw linux on a digital camera :p06:51
jmichaelxcryojenx: do i already know you? detroit?06:52
cryojenxya, some dude got it running on ... i think it was a Canon, can't recall the model06:52

Joitlol06:52
cryojenxnot as far as I know, Biloxi06:52
Joitok06:53
jmichaelxok, i talk sometimes to someone else in here who uses secondlife, and i think is also 'on the spectrum'06:53
cryojenxHeck I'd try to get it running on a toaster if i could figure out how to input bash commands via bread-based punch cards06:54

cryojenxhmm, good idea Joit06:55
jmichaelxwhat is the exact problem you are having with your screen? also what card, what version of KDE?06:55
cryojenxwhats happening is that i have an intel integrated chipset and desktop effects work beautifully, til i log out, when i try to log back in, it crashes on loading, kicks me back out to the login manager and i have to re-login, only now opengl is disabled06:57
cryojenxand its Oneiric06:57
jmichaelxcryojenx: have you gone to Settings Manager>Desktop Effects>Advanced, and disabled functionality checks?06:58
=== ubuntu is now known as dinacicc

Joitreboot07:00
jmichaelxlol apparently so... or restart KDE/X07:00
cryojenxNope, still crashes07:01
jmichaelxdamn07:01
jmichaelxyou might also want to try disabling the 'blur' effect. i know that effect caused many problems for a long time, whether or not that is still so, i do not know07:02
cryojenxive actually got everything unchecked except wobbly windows, guess i could uncheck that07:02
cryojenxbrb again07:03
cryojenxwow, even with every effect unchecked, it still doesn't like me lol07:05
Joitwell, its may only the driver, what lacks07:06
Joitanother page http://anothersysadmin.wordpress.com/2009/05/05/ubuntu-904-and-uxa-acceleration-in-xorg/07:06
cryojenxlol that my exact computer model07:07
jmichaelxach, you may just need to ask when more people are here (during the day, US time)... i am sure you will be able to getthings working07:07
cryojenxya, its a work in progress07:08
cryojenxat least its a lot less of an issue than problems ive had with other distros, Fedora was a pain in the arse just to get simple crap working07:08
Joitlol07:09
jmichaelxfedora does not work with as much hardware, out of the box07:09
Joitits may a true hacking system, where you can hack with your keyboard07:09
jmichaelxa lot of that has to do with patent-encumbered drivers, etc07:10
cryojenxyeah, lesson learned. I tried it cause i was intrigued by the full disk encryption, but wasnt worth the hassle07:10
Joitjust tells me i pick the right distro then :) at last i did like debian a lot at the beginning07:10
cryojenxbrb07:11
jmichaelxdebian is great... i just use ubuntuto more easily have cutting edge software.... debian stable can get boring on the desktop07:11
jmichaelxmixing debian stable with unstable, experimental, etc can get messy07:12
Joityeah, i used debian as it was at 3, it was a mess but still more stable then anything else07:16
Joitand it was better organized anyhow07:16
cryojenxcome to think of it... Desktop effects really aren't that big a deal, they take more ram and a better graphics card would just suck up more electricity. Think I'll leave it as is.07:22
Joitwell its comfort, thats right07:22
cryojenxit's just my brain working overtime trying to solve a challenging puzzle, but sometimes its ok to just walk away07:23
Joityeah intel crads are mostly a pain, and you cannot solve it, when there is no matching driver07:25
Joitits not a problem from configuring it, it simpel dont wrok07:25
cryojenxyeah07:26
Joittht what i learend at my early debian :p07:26
Joitits still a probem too that intel doesnt have opensource drivers and someone need to figure it out07:26
Joitthat is, what i been told07:26
cryojenxdon't Nvidia and ATI have the same problem? proprietary drivers?07:27
Joityeah but they gave out drivers for linux, and i figure, somenone looked into it, you only cannot copy her code07:28
Joitati and nvidia anyhow support linux07:28
Joitat last they make drivers under linux07:29
Joiti dont think intel does do that07:29
cryojenxya i think intel has too much vested interest in keeping an alliance with microsoft07:30
Joityeah, i think they even stated that07:31
Joiti still try to get artweaver to work under wine, lol but missing tahoma or new times roman07:31

Peace-gribouille: sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get upgrade13:25
Peace-gribouille: if you get updrade :) 4.7.4 will be ...13:25
rolandok, that site is not that useless, apparently it even lists what doesn't work on which version and hw inside, but still you need to click on every model to see what's what.13:25
gribouillePeace-, are the packages already available?13:25
rolandszal: no language barrier13:25
Peace-gribouille: guess no13:25
gribouillePeace-, when will they be?13:26
BluesKajPeace-, yes you asked me to test it and I did , works fine :)13:26
Peace-BluesKaj: :) i have upgraded13:26
Peace-now should be able to open backup files too if you want13:27
Peace-:D13:27
szalgribouille: probably best ask yofel that when he's on the machine13:27
gribouillefor 4.7.3, it took 4 days between the kde release and the kubuntu release. why did it take som mutch time?13:30
Peace-gribouille: because is free?13:30

yofellack of people working on it13:30
BluesKajPeace-, so i need to replace the older version13:30
gribouilledoes kubuntu patch the kde packages a lot?13:31
Peace-BluesKaj: it overwrite it yes13:31
Peace-overwrites13:31
yofeland I can't really say when 4.7.4 will be out, other than "soon"13:31
gribouilleyofel, do you have to patch the packages a lot?13:31
yofelnot that much, but we still need to build and test all packages, and 4.7.4 isn't the ONLY thing on the todo list13:32
Peace-yofel: you do packages?13:33
yofelyes13:33
Peace-yofel: hihihi13:33
gribouilleyofel, do you start packaging only when the release is official?13:34
yofelgribouille: no, before. Problem this time: there's barely anyone that has time to actually do something13:35

Peace-gribouille: anyway kde 4.7.4 is a minor release ...just few bugfix13:37
gribouilleyofel, taht's good news :-(13:37
Peace-so you will see anything of new13:37
gribouillePeace-, sure, but fixing some bugs would be a great thing, because kde is severely buggy13:38
Peace-gribouille: ?13:40
Peace-i have not see n so much bugs here13:40
Peace-btw13:40

akSeyaguys.. i'm having the same problem as yesterday, but today I coudn't fix it .. windows are only shown in secondary display on my Notebook..14:26
BluesKajsuddenly realized ktorrent isn't loading my blocklist in the IP Filter ,,crashes the list and refuses to copy into the textbox ... any ideas?14:27
rolandgribouille: how do the developers know anything is broken, if you won't tell them?14:28
akSeyaI have LVDS1 (notebook screen) and HDMI1.. if I reboot kubuntu without HDMI1, 1) notebook screen does not get taskbar, 2) windows opens but are not shown in notebook screen. When I plug HDMI1 and configure it with xrandr --output HDMI1 --auto --output LVDS1 --auto --primary --below HDMI1: 1) taskbar and windows (all I tried to open before) are in HDMI114:28
akSeyaI did what BluesKaj told me yesterday, login with a new session.. also didn't work14:29
akSeyayesterday I removed ~/.kde/share/config/kwin* ~/.kde/share/config/session/kwin* ~/.kde/share/config/kdedrc ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals14:30
akSeyaand it worked.. but I guess it was luck cause today I did the same thing and still have the problem14:30
akSeyaat home I use another HDMI, my 40" TV.. here I use a 19" monitor14:30
gribouilleroland, some people report bugs, ans their reports are completely ignored14:30
BluesKajakSeya, well, it was advice that I'd seen previously for a similar problem as yours , since I haven't experienced it my self it's out of my expertise14:31

andyccHello all! I have a small problem with Amarok (2.4.3/KDE 4.7.2) - I'd like to be able to close the lid and save some power when listening to music. However, Amarok doesn't prevent suspending. Any pointers on what I should do?16:10
holsteinandycc: turn off suspend when the lid closes, and suspend manually as needed16:11
andyccholstein: I've gotten used to just closing the lid to suspend. Disabling that would be a massive downgrade in my workflow.16:12
holsteinandycc: set the screen time out lower16:12
holsteinmaybe sleep the screen manually16:13
andyccholstein: I don't want to change my workflow just for the occasional moment of listening to music. You know what, I'll just update KDE to 4.7.4 from the PPA and see if that fixes it.16:14
holsteinandycc: i would expect a rev in amarok to do that16:15
holsteinandycc: you can manually sleep the screen.. the screen is as asleep as always, the lid is just up16:15
holsteinsame level of power consumption16:16
andyccholstein: lugging a laptop that has its lid open around the room is not exactly pleasant. I use non-wireless headphones.16:17
holsteinandycc: you can always code/script something, otherwise, i would say choose your battles16:18
andyccBesides, alternative ways to do it aren't the solution I'm looking for. Does anyone know of an actual setting that I can change?16:18

ironThanks for answering though :)22:20
holsteiniron: thats not kubuntu specific either, so you could ask around in the other potentially more busy support channels...22:21
