BarkingFishNot yet, there won't be...00:07
BarkingFishI need you to go back into systemsettings for me, multimedia, then Phonon00:08

BarkingFisher.. Audio playback, not audio notifications :P00:13
BarkingFishYou should see one particular sound device at the very top of your list.00:14

gfroghello, there, is there anybody familiar with kdialog? when I use kdialog to send a passivepop message, it shows a gnome-like popup msg in KDE env, so strange. Could anybody give me some advice to troubleshoot this problem?02:51
merlin1991hey partitionmanager gives me a headache, I'm trying to resize a primary partition (which contains 2 extended ones) to occupy unallocated space left from it02:53
merlin1991but it just fails with couldn't set geometry for partition /dev/something while trying to resize/move it02:53
merlin1991I did not boot from there (running the live cd) and nothing is munted02:54
gfrogmerlin1991: I think you should check the mound partition in your running os (the live cd) with cmd 'mount' to make sure no hard disk is used first.02:58
merlin1991as I said, nothing is mounted02:58

osinclair_jtheuer: and don't forget update-grub b4 u reboot10:13
faichelejtheuer: What you mean is the grub boot prompt; depending on how grub is configured, it either displays "Press Esc to enter boot console" before the kernel loads, or it presents a selection of bootable kernels.10:15
faichelejtheuer: You can edit the grub command line there.10:15
jtheuerok, great nomodeset works, I can now boot staight into X... Small issue left: I onlyhave 1024x768 and cannot use my external monitor. Any ideas what is wrong? its an internal intel graphics card...10:24

Tech-1Alonea:  when you click on aditional drivers, there are usually 2-3 versions to pick from16:06

AloneaTech-1: only additional is the experimental free one16:06

Tech-1then go to your repos and click search, Nvidia...then look for nvidia-current16:07

AloneaTech-1: ok, and for reference the additional one I have says:   p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; }  This driver provides a highly experimental 3D acceleration for NVIDIA graphics cards, as a free alternative to the proprietary driver.16:08

soeeyofel, what 4.8 version can we expect in 11.10 ? aby rc maybe ?21:09
=== apple is now known as Amanda11
The_JagHi all, is there a way to get into ubuntu that new Characters Picker feature of OSX Lion?21:15
ccuxhallo everyone21:15
yofelsoee: probably rc, but with the current progress I'm really just guessing21:16
The_Jaganyone?21:17
soeeyofel, thank you21:20
BluesKajThe_Jag, alt+f2 . character-selector21:20
soeeThe_Jag, what is Characters Picker ?21:20
=== joel is now known as Oxymoron
BluesKajerr character selector , The_Jag21:21
The_JagBluesKaj: never knew that21:21
BluesKajI didn't either , but i stsrted typing character and the selector auto finished21:22
The_Jagsoee: it's a feature of the new osx lion that acts like in android/iOS: tap and hold a key and it shows the possible accented weird chars associated with it21:22
soeeThe_Jag, like press "s" and you get "ś" etc ?21:23
The_JagBluesKaj: can't make it to work21:24
The_Jagsoee: yes21:24
The_Jagsoee: a pop up with all those chars21:24
The_Jagquite handy21:24
d1g1ta1I need to install Kubuntu on an older laptop that does not support booting from the CD ROM nor USB (it does support booting from floppy).  Is it possible to copy the contents of the CD to a USB drive and then to create a boot floppy that will both recognize the USB thumb drive and allow installation of Kubuntu?21:24
jaleli need help21:24
jaleli install maven21:24
jalelin my system21:24
Tech-1d1g1ta1:  is it a eeepc ?21:25
jaleland i modify my /etc/bash.bashrc21:25
d1g1ta1Tech-1:  no21:25
The_JagBluesKaj: it won't find anything :(21:25
jalelbut he can't reconize my my command mvn21:25
Tech-1d1g1ta1:  are you trying to install from a usb?, if so check out unetbootin21:25
d1g1ta1Tech-1: no, it's a parallel port CD ROM drive21:26
Tech-1o21:26
d1g1ta1Tech-1: or, as I mentioned, I can copy the CD to a USB memory drive (though that's not bootable either).21:26
Tech-1so, you want to install from that on boot ?21:26
BluesKajⳀt ,  <-- I just dragged that into the text box21:27
d1g1ta1Tech-1:   Yes, but I will go with whatever works.21:27
BluesKajThe_Jag,^21:27
The_JagBluesKaj: ???21:27
Tech-1cant you hit escape on boot and have the bios have you chose on boot ?21:28
BluesKajThe_Jag, sry , dunno what you're trying to do then.21:28
d1g1ta1Tech-1: No, the only boot options on that laptop are floppy disk or hard disk21:29
Tech-1try the floppy and see if it sees it21:29
d1g1ta1yes, it works with a DOS boot floppy21:29
Tech-1must be a really ld machine, lol21:30
Tech-1old21:30
d1g1ta1Tech-1:  I even made a DOS boot floppy with the parallel port CD ROM drivers which works, but Kubuntu has a known error that prevents installing from WIndows21:30
Tech-1i c21:30
d1g1ta1Tech-1:  nor does it support DOS21:30
Tech-1google time21:31
The_JagBluesKaj: I'm searching a way (if there is any) to enable a feature like Character Picker http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html#text21:31
d1g1ta1Tech-1:  So, I was thinking if we could make a Linux floppy that will allow me to run the installation from USB or from the parallel port (or a USB DVD) drive...21:31
Tech-1you can from a usb, unetbootin would be the choice21:32
d1g1ta1Tech-1: remember, this doesn''t support boot from USB, which is why I need the floppy to boot linux21:32
Tech-1just make sure you format the usb to dos21:32
Tech-1o ic now21:33
Tech-1ok21:33
BluesKajThe_Jag, try character picker in apper or muon , there are acouple of apps there21:34
The_Jagthanks, will try that21:34
d1g1ta1I am trying several versions of Kubuntu and Ubuntu, each throws a different error.  Ubuntu says "The specified file was not found"  Kubuntu says "CD MENU" "Invalid CD Detected"... I googled these and it says they are known bugs.  SUper.21:34
* Tech-1 scratches head21:35
d1g1ta1Tech-1:   I suppose I could take the hard drive and put it into a laptop that supports CD booting... but then would the GUI work when I change machines?  I imagine not.21:36
Tech-1the hardware would be different21:37
Tech-1you cant hold escape on boot and it give you boot options ?21:37
d1g1ta1Nope, tried it when you asked b4, it just booted Windows21:38
Tech-1heh21:38
Tech-1what kind of machine is it21:38
d1g1ta1Tech-1:  Acer21:39
Tech-1have you gone into the bios yet ?21:39
BluesKajd1g1ta1, try the alternate install21:40
d1g1ta1Oh, yes.  Only options are hard drive and Floppy drive21:40
BluesKaj!alternate21:40
Tech-1ya, like BluesKaj  said21:40
ubottuThe Alternate CD is a classical text-mode install CD. It supports a wider range of hardware than the !LiveCD, and can also be used as an upgrade CD.  Look for the alternate checkbox on the Kubuntu download page - See also !minimal21:40
d1g1ta1BluesKaj:  No, what''s that?21:40
d1g1ta1!alternate21:40
BluesKajd1g1ta1, read the post above21:41
d1g1ta1BluesKaj: the thing is, I cannot boot from CD on this system.  Has to be floppy or hard drive.21:43
BluesKajdoes the cdrom not work at all?21:43
d1g1ta1WOrks, but u cannot boot from it on this system21:43
d1g1ta1You can boot from Floppy and then run things on the CD, but Ubuntu & Kubuntu keep throwing the errors mentioned above.21:44
d1g1ta1same goes for HD/WIn boot21:44
Tech-1the only thing i can say is, see if there is a bios update that is for that mobo21:44
d1g1ta1I already checked, there is not21:44
Tech-1what about f821:45
Tech-1im grabing at straws here, so.21:45
d1g1ta1Remember, this is a parallel port CD ROM drive and you cannot boot from USB even though I have two USB DVD RW drives that won't help21:45
Tech-1what model # is this21:46
d1g1ta1I think I need a way to boot from floppy and then launch the installer from CD ROM or USB memory drive.21:46
Tech-1Yeah21:46
d1g1ta1TravelMate 330T21:46
d1g1ta1This one only has an external floppy, no CD, so I had to use a 3rd party parallel CD ROM21:47
Tech-1the only thing i can think of is vbox21:49
BluesKajd1g1ta1, pls understand the alternate cd will probly boot , the live cd doesn't boot on older systems ..i know, I have one21:57
BluesKajI installed using the alternate on an amd single cpu pc from 200521:58
BluesKajd1g1ta1, . ok understood , that's a pretty old system ....you could try xfce/xubuntu22:02
Tech-1im looking at a pdf, it says you can pick the boot order22:02
Tech-1http://tim.id.au/laptops/acer/travelmate%20330.pdf22:03
d1g1ta1You can, but not for 3rd party CD ROM22:03
Tech-1oh22:03
d1g1ta1BluesKaj: does xfce/xubuntu support installation from a floppy disk?22:03
Tech-1id do like BluesKaj  said = alternate cd22:04
d1g1ta1BluesKaj: are you saying the alternate CD might boot from Windows running off a non-bootable CD ROM (not DVD) drive?22:04
Tech-1that prolly will work22:04
kkerwinHi. I just setup an NFS share, but the directory that I'm trying to share is apparently "unable to be exported". Any reason why this is, and what can I do to fix the issue?22:04
BluesKajd1g1ta1, yes it should boot with windows installed, but make sure you create an ext3/4 partition for the linux OS, and swap22:08
BluesKajuse gparted livecd for the partitoning22:09
d1g1ta1I'd just assume scratch windows and install Kubuntu.  When I downloaded the alternate CD it gave me a 28KB file called *.iso.torrent22:09
d1g1ta1BluesKaj: same problem, how am I going to boot the Live CD?22:10
BluesKajd1g1ta1, that file merely a link for seeding the iso thru your torrent client22:10
d1g1ta1I don't have that.  There's no way to just download the CD directly?22:11
d1g1ta1And, once I have it, can you start the Alternate install from WIndows?22:11
Tech-1how fast is the processor and how much ram U got22:11
d1g1ta1It's a PII 384M RAM22:11
Tech-1huh22:12
d1g1ta1Thus, my choice of Kubuntu vs Ubuntu22:12
Tech-1thats cuttin it mighty close22:12
Tech-1youd be better off with xfce or lubuntu or something like that22:12
BluesKajyeah, it's too old for ubuntu or kubuntu , xubuntu might work22:12
d1g1ta1Is this a waste of time?  Win 98 runs great on that system22:12
Tech-1looks like it22:13
Tech-1or, puppy22:13
Tech-1puppy looks and works great22:13
BluesKajyup22:13
Riddelld1g1ta1: get it from http://releases.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/oneiric/22:13
BluesKajRiddell, not with his specs ...no way will it work22:14
d1g1ta1can you install xubuntu or Puppy from DOS, Win 98 or a boot floppy?22:15
BluesKajd1g1ta1, http://www.xubuntu.org/22:15
BluesKajcheck the url22:16
d1g1ta1(e.g., without a bootable CD / DVD / USB / parallel drive)?22:16
BluesKajd1g1ta1, well, without a cdrom drive , there might be a method , but I don't know of any22:21
Tech-1maybe a tape drive22:22
Tech-1i remember the win 98 days tho, whew, glad they are over.22:23
sam-jamiehey all22:27
kkerwinHi. I just setup an NFS share, but the directory that I'm trying to share is apparently "unable to be exported". Any reason why this is, and what can I do to fix the issue?22:27
d1g1ta1BluesKaj: I have a CD ROM drive, it's just not a bootable CD ROM drive.  I can boot from WIndows or floppy drive22:28
BluesKajd1g1ta1, an outboard ?22:33
d1g1ta1y22:33
d1g1ta1parallel w dos driver I can make it boot from WIndows on C: or dos on A:22:33
d1g1ta1and see the CD ROM22:33
=== zkriesse is now known as zkriesse_away
BluesKajd1g1ta1, well it's a bit round abou,t but if you can get the xubuntu alternate iso on to a cd (if the outboard can also burn cds or if you have access to a cd burner) , the you might be able to explore the wonders of linux on the laptop:)22:44
=== zkriesse_away is now known as zkriesse
BluesKajBBL22:54
d1g1ta1BluesKaj: I can burn the CD on another system, no problem.  The question is whether or not I can launch the alternate CD installer from DOS?22:59
OerHeksd1g1ta1, no, dis is unusable, there used to be a floppy method, i hope that still works .. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/WithFloppies23:12

kkerwinHi. When I start my NFS server, I receive the following error message: "exportfs: *** does not support export". Any idea why this is, and what I can do to fix it?23:31
progre55hi guys. how do you disable samba (smbd) so that it doesnt autostart?23:42
progre55system settings > sharing just gives me an option to set a username and password23:43
progre55"default"23:43
bodohthis kubuntu is not bad ... kde has made quite a change since the last time I used it23:43
bodohsome 9-10 years ago23:43
bodohwhen everything was still so messed up ;)23:44
bodohbut I think team kde needs some sort of Steve Jobs to simplify its confusing and unintuitive GUIs23:44
bodohit'23:45
bodohit's one thing to be 'different' .. and it's another thing to be clustered, confusing, unintuitive23:45
SunTsubodoh: kde lost me previously, until 4.3 where it actually started to be usable again23:53
SunTsuand quite fast compared to the kde I know some years ago23:54
bodohreally messed up is gnome now23:54
bodohI tried mint 12's gnome before I used this kubuntu23:54
bodohthat was so like, fucked up23:54
EvilResistanceUbuntu's GNOME/Unity combo sickens me unfortunately23:55
bodohno wonder that linus got pissed off too23:55
EvilResistancethat alone got me to use KDE23:55
EvilResistanceand its much much sexier than GNOME/Unity :P23:55
Tech-1kayta has gnome 3 still23:55
Tech-1223:55
Tech-1infact, i loaded Ultimate-Edition and it uses gnome 223:56
Tech-13.0  which is kayta23:56
SunTsuI'm still undecided whether I keep using kde or xfce in the long run23:56
bodohI mostly use fluxbox ... but the fact is, we'll still need kde or gnome23:56
bodohor just go with xfce23:56
Tech-1you could always go staight debian23:56
bodohoh .. just keep them all SunTsu23:56
bodohthis is not 90s anymore .. or even early 2000s .. space now is CHEAP23:57
SunTsubodoh: on laptops it's still an issue23:57
bodohso cheap in fact ... we can throw away 50gb just for the system23:57
bodohI always use laptop23:57
bodohthis one has 500gb23:57
bodohbut yeah .. I remember my $4000 laptop .. Vaio .. with only 17gb23:58
bodoh16gb23:58
SunTsubodoh: yeah, maybe I should replace my 250g drive23:58
bodohback in 199923:58
bodohfucking 4000 $$$ ... and now for something that is 25 times better .. it's only less than 400$$23:59
bodohin the US at least23:59
bodohBTW ... I'm glad that stupid Vaio is kinda out of business23:59
