XeiaieXhallo jeden00:52
XeiaieXi have a question and im hoping someone can help me!00:52
XeiaieXive searched and searched to no avail00:52
XeiaieXive installed xubuntu 11.10 and compiz/emerald and have compositing working and everything is flawless. however, the xfce panels do not cast a drop shadow00:53
XeiaieXanyone have any ideas why?00:53
holsteini find focus issues00:54
XeiaieX?00:54
holsteinand other deal breakers... i remember there being some giant shadow i had to tame down when running emerald00:54
XeiaieXeverything is perfect except that my panels do not have shadows00:54
XeiaieXall other windows do though00:55
holsteinwell, it wasnt perfect for me00:55
holsteini find it laggy too00:55
XeiaieXok so do you know what might be the problem?00:55
holsteinthe right click menu is laggy00:55
XeiaieX...00:56
holsteinXeiaieX: sure.. its just not meant for XFCE00:56
XeiaieXhow do i enable drop shadows on the xfce panels as theyre supposed to ..00:56
XeiaieXthe option is enabled in the settings00:56
XeiaieXyet the shadows do not appear00:56
holsteinnot sure00:57
holsteinyou'd need to disable compiz and test, and file a bug00:57
holsteinand follow up pretty seriously00:58
holsteinit would be nice to get on some of this eye-candy00:59
holsteini think its getting worked out more and more00:59
holsteinin xubuntu00:59
holsteinXeiaieX: where did you get emerald?01:00
holsteinan old .deb?01:00
XeiaieXummmm01:01
XeiaieXa deb i downloaded from a website but im not sure if its old or what01:01
holsteinwell, its not from canonnical01:01
holsteinfor 11.1001:01
holsteinnot that thats the issue...01:01
holsteinbut, we are pulling a lot of things in trying to make it look like gnome 2 did with compiz01:01
holsteinor at least that was my goal at first01:02
XeiaieXi doubt that would cause that though01:02
holsteinsure, but something is causing it... and is it the decorator?01:02
XeiaieXhow do i check?01:02
holsteinnot sure01:03
holsteini say, choose your battles01:03
Crash_O-DCould use help with samba share with windows trying to connect01:03
holsteinif thats literally the only thing missing, i say thats pretty good01:03
holsteinCrash_O-D: permissions are a pain there01:03
XeiaieXsee here is a screenshot http://www.zimagez.com/full/172696bd321149448302d8b06046bee3e9e9a53117bc822e26a1fcbd0408a4be903c29a12cf95e1a920e11ebd6ecd7f38262b8b086db1185.php01:04
holsteini typically use swish to connect windows to ssh :)01:04
holsteinor filezilla01:04
Crash_O-Di see the folder but will not allow me to connect due to premissions i even set user name as same as linux and pass01:04
holsteinCrash_O-D: yup... that'll be the deal though01:04
holsteinXeiaieX: looks like a line there01:04
XeiaieXthats the panel not a shadow01:05
holsteinstill... looks good to me01:05
XeiaieXi dont like it without shadows01:05
holsteinyup, its a drag01:05
XeiaieXim not a defeatist... so im not gonna just accept it as it is even tho i dont like it01:05
XeiaieXi must fix it01:05
holsteinyou'll need to disable compiz and test01:06
XeiaieXi did01:06
holsteintest it stock... you can do that from the live CD01:06
XeiaieXya ill boot it on a diff machine live right now01:06
XeiaieXclean setup tho huh? :)01:06
holsteinyeah01:07
XeiaieXi love it all except for that issue01:07
holsteinlooks nice01:07
XeiaieXthanks01:07
holsteini just found that by the time i got it the way i wanted it, it was like twice as laggy as gnome2 was01:07
XeiaieXcouldnt run any better for me01:07
XeiaieXtho this is by no means a slow machine01:07
XeiaieXjust booted another machine live and checked  the dock shadows and there arent any01:13
XeiaieXk01:20

alejandro_morenoI installed xubuntu 11.10 from a USB stick, and after rebooting, the installed xubuntu doesn't recognize my wireless card, or my USB stick ...07:16
alejandro_morenois there something I07:16
alejandro_morenocan do besides moving my machine closer to my router, so that I can try wired connection?07:16

chiiiiizhello07:41
chiiiiizI am using Voyager, a customised version of ubuntu/Xubuntu.07:42
chiiiiizThe file manager is managed by Xubuntu, and so is Thunar. I want to use Nautilus for some operations (use of some scripts, among others)07:43
chiiiiizI have made a launcher saying "nautilus --no-desktop", in my AWN dock. This works.07:43
chiiiiizBut when I enter "nautilus --no-desktop" in the field "File Manager" of my Favorite Application menu, the --no-desktop option is ignored.07:44
chiiiiizDoes anyone know how to tell XFCE to pay attention to the option?07:44

baizonhello14:12
XenicideIf i have a extended filesystem on sda2, is it safe to delete sda2 that contain windows?14:19
ePlusgood afternoon all15:11
olbihello :)15:23
eli_anyone feel like helping me maybe?15:35
holsteineli_: you'll just need to ask your question, and if anyone can, they will help15:36
eli_ok, well i am unable to connect wirelessly with my laptop running xubuntu. it keeps asking for the WPA2 key even though it's right15:37
eli_i am very new to linux in general15:37
eli_apparently my router sucks, so i tried changing the macaddress of the laptop to see if the router was blocking my macaddress due to too many keep-alive packets15:38
holsteineli_: i would go into the manager, and delete the connection, and double check that it is 'right'15:38
eli_but that didn't seem to help15:38
holsteinif you can, just keep it simple15:38
holsteinyou shouldnt have to do anything special15:39
eli_well the thing is, i was connected. it just pooped out on me and keeps asking for the key. i revealed key and it's right15:39
eli_it was doing the same thing to my friends crunchbang laptop when he brought it over15:39
holsteinsure, but i dont know what all you have done15:39
holsteinchanging mac addresses... or whats up with the router15:39
eli_it works fine on my dad's windows laptop, he can connect fine15:40
eli_my girlfriends mac also connects fine.15:40
holsteini think we should consider that coincidence until you get further data15:40
holsteintheres also another constant there15:41
holsteinlinux is new to you, and mac is not new to your GF, and windows is not new to any of you15:41
eli_mhm15:41
holsteinif you can wire up temporarily, and apply all updates in case its something that needs patched15:41
eli_i'm hardwired in right now15:42
holsteineither undo what you have done, or just boot up from the live CD15:42
eli_i used macchanger to randomly choose a new macaddress, want me to return it to the permanent address?15:43
ZAN3Hey all.  Making the switch to Xubuntu.  Got both 32 & 64bit ISO's. Not sure which to install.  My 4 yr old notebook has 1.7 GHz Single core CPU, 2Gb RAM, 160 Gb HDD etc.  Which version should I go for?  Will 64bit use MORE cpu and thus run hotter? And is it ANY faster? I;ve hear 64bit uses more RAM - if so, will apps take longer to load due to having to access more of the memory?  What are the benefits/cons of running either version on this system?15:44
ZAN3Nobody seems to really know the answer.  Here's hoping someone can help me out. Sorry for being a complete idiot.  Regards.15:44
holsteineli_: i want you to either try and return to as much of the out-of-the-box setup as possible, or boot up into the live CD15:46
holsteintaking these potential breakages/customizations out of the equation15:46
eli_ok 1 sec15:46
baizonZAN3: what laptop do you got?15:46
holsteinyou can also apply upgrades while you are on the wired internet and see if that provides a pathc15:46
holsteinpatch*15:46
baizonZAN3: write the exact cpu data plz15:47
holsteinZAN3: for less that 4GB's of ram, the 32bit version is usually suggested15:47
ZAN3@baizon:  Dell - Celeron M53015:47
holsteintheres really no deal breakers anymore running 64bit though15:47
holsteinflash used to be a sticking point15:47
holsteineli_: you can use the update manger, or you can open a terminal and run15:48
holsteinsudo apt-get update15:48
holsteinsudo apt-get upgrade15:48
holsteineli_: or you can use synaptic... clicking reload, and mark all upgrades15:48

baizonZAN3: what are you planning to do with your system?15:50
ZAN3The basics, maybe a bit of light video editing from time to time15:50
baizonZAN3: are you planning to buy RAM to get 4GB?15:52
ZAN3It's maxed out at 2Gb15:52
baizonok, then my recommendation is 32bit15:52
ZAN3@baizon:  thanks.  so what is the REAL difference between them - apart from the RAM required?15:54
ubuntuok. im booted from live USB. i have no wireless capabilities, same as when i first installed.15:55
ubuntu<----- eli_15:55
holsteinZAN3: ths 64bit version will utilize the chip better for some things15:56
holsteinyou might notices if you were rendering video in something with 64bit support that it would rendor much faster15:56
holsteinassuming you have enough ram15:56
holsteinyou might also notice other things are slower15:57
baizonZAN3: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/32bit_and_64bit15:57
ZAN3@holstein:  Okaaay.  So if it uses the chip better it RUNS hotter and uses more battery, right.  Sorry for being stupid15:57
holsteinZAN3: that depends15:57
holsteini wouldnt choose 32 or 64 for battery life15:58
baizonZAN3: yes, for older chips 32 can be better than 6415:58
ubuntushould i install drivers?15:58
baizonbecause there arent developing it anymore15:58
holsteinit depends like baizon is asking, on what you are planning on doing15:58
baizonubuntu: is your wifi on?15:58
ubuntuno, its greyed out, says firmware needed15:59
Sysimenu -> system -> additional drivers15:59
baizonjockey is recommending something?15:59
Sysiyou should have firmware or driver there15:59
holsteinubuntu: if its a broadcom chip, there are a couple of drivers15:59
holsteinmaybe you should try the other one15:59
ubuntuit is broadcom15:59
ubuntui went to menu -> system but i didn't see additional drivers16:00
holsteini would check out https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx16:00
Sysimaybe I remember wrong, somewhere in menu anyway16:00
ubuntualright ill do that now16:00
baizonubuntu: open terminal, and type: jockey-gtk16:00
ubuntuwell there's a little icon in the panel asking me to install drivers16:00
ubuntuok, it brought up an option to activate drivers16:01
baizonso do it :)16:02
baizonand it should work16:02
ubuntuhmmm it says i need to restart before changes will take effect16:03
ubuntuand im pretty sure my friend who helped me install already did that too16:04
ubuntulike i said, it was working a couple nights ago, but in the middle of watching a movie on mplayer it disconnected and i haven't been able to get back on16:04
baizoncheck the log16:05
ubuntuhow? sorry, im so new, this is my first ever linux install16:05
ubuntuand should i reboot into the harddrive to check it?16:06
holsteinubuntu: did you read that wiki page?16:07
holsteinAFAIK there are 2 drivers, you can try the other one16:07
holsteinand you can try it from the live CD16:07
ubuntuoh sorry, i will read it now16:07
puffHm, I'm looking at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xfce#Commands_for_the_settings_manager16:09
holsteinthe arch documentaion is great16:09
puffIt looks like something like this might help me out (I want to make a simple clicky icon to activate my external display port) but I'm unclear, from reading that, how I actually invoke those commands.16:10
holsteinpuff: are you trying to extend the destkop? or mirror?16:11
puffMirror.16:11
puffI move my laptop between desks, one desk has a nice large Dell monitor.16:11
holsteinyou can do that in the system settings under 'monitor'16:11
holsteindisplay?16:11
holsteini think its monitor16:11
puffYes, display.16:11
holsteini like arandr as well16:11
puffSettings/Settings Manager/Display, select the dell monitor, click the checkbox for "usee this display"16:12
puffEvery time I plug in.  Since I do this at least once, sometimes twice a day, I'd like to set up a shortcut.16:12
holsteinpuff: you can script something im sure, or do something like automate the mouse clicks with something16:13
puffHm, looking at arandr and I'm not sure how it applies.16:14
ubuntuapparently i can't apt-get install the driver because im not root16:15
holsteinwell, it applies like i said... when i want to extend my desktop16:15
holsteinits not so much for your case.. i was going to ask you to test it16:15
holsteinbut, you can disregard it16:15
nefptehow would i be able to display multiple clocks in xubuntu 11.10?16:15
holsteinyou sudo apt-get install ubuntu16:15
ubuntui did, same message16:16
holsteinsudo apt-get install whatever16:16
puffubuntu: Don't forget to put "sudo" at the beginning.16:17
puffubuntu: Also, you should be doing this from the account you first set up when you installed ubuntu.16:17
ubuntuyea, i tried that first. it says Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock16:17
holsteinpuff: its live right now16:17
holsteinubuntu: you have another package manager open16:17
ubuntuoh, you are correct16:17
puffubuntu: Yeah, what holstein said.16:17
pleia2nefpte: you can add multiple of the "orage clock" to your panel and set different time zones for them16:18
nefptepleia2: right click on panel>panel>add new items>add clock? just moved from ubuntu16:21
pleia2nefpte: add "orage clock" not the regular clock16:21
pleia2but otherwise, yes16:21
puffHm, found xfce-settings-display, but I need to list the displays so I know what argument to feed it.16:22
ubuntuhrm. neither drivers is working. they both say (firmware missing)16:22
ubuntuanyway... thanks for all your help! i have to go to work, i will try again later16:23
nefptepleia2: ah, but i don't know which clock corresponds to which place :s16:25
pleia2nefpte: right click on the clock and go to "properties"16:30
pleia2you can change stuff there, and you can always move them around as needed16:30
nefptei guess that will have to do16:32
nefptethanks16:32
Kurdistanreally good xubuntu release16:45
Kurdistan11.1016:45
KurdistanI have cario-dock, jupiter and synapse running at boot. boot-time great. performance great.16:45
Kurdistanit seems to be stable. even if it is based on ubuntu, and ubuntu with no-LTS release are based on debian unstable.16:46
holsteinits not so much based on ubuntu16:48
holsteinit is ubuntu... with XFCE and other customizations16:48
Kurdistanholstein, yes I know.16:48
Kurdistanis there any xubuntu ppa like the kubuntu team haves?16:49
holsteini dont think the kubuntu team has ppas16:49
holsteinnot that are installed by default16:49
holsteinif its not in the repos, you can push it out, and be an official flavor or whatever you call it16:49
holsteinyou cant ship with it by default16:50
holsteinthere might be a testing kubuntu ppa you can add16:50
Kurdistanholstein yes kubuntu have ppa16:50
Kurdistansome kind of backports16:50
Kurdistanthat let you update your kde16:50
holsteinKurdistan: not in by default16:50
holsteinmabye you check a box or something...16:51
Kurdistanholstein, yes not by default.16:51
Kurdistanholstein reason I ask is because if xfce newer version will come and I do not want to reinstall16:51
KurdistanI still wanted the newer xfce version16:51
holsteinKurdistan: you can always build it16:51
Kurdistanholstein :) if I had the time I would. I only install stable kernel if the current does not play well16:52
Kurdistanbut anyway a good xubuntu release.16:52
holsteinyou can build XFCE16:52
holsteinif you want one that is newer than what is in the repos16:53
Kurdistanholstein have you tried?16:53
holsteinAFAIK, you can suggest a backport16:53
holsteinKurdistan: nope16:53
Kurdistanholstein, okey.16:54
Kurdistanhave nice day/evening. need to go.16:54
Kurdistanthx again xubuntu team for a good release16:54

holsteinyup... the xubuntu team rocks!16:55

go8765Sysi, what you mean?17:08

go8765Sysi, *english is not my native? so its hard to me fully understand what you mean :(17:10
go8765Sysi, about what bug you say ?17:10
Sysiupstream has probably nothing to do with distro-specific packaging17:10
holsteinright, but if its not maintained in debian, pulling it into ubuntu would be more of a challenge17:10
Sysigo8765: tell guy responsible for dooble on ubuntu to make package of current version17:11

holsteingo8765: sure.. consider packaging it like that for debian though17:13

holsteinit would benifit a lot of folks that way17:14
Sysigo8765: package info and contacts are here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/dooble17:14

w30there is compiz, compiz-core, compiz-plugins, compiz-plugins-default, compix-plugins-extra, etc.18:22
Sysiw30: xfce4 xfce4-goodies and something for compiz18:22
baizonw30: yes18:22
Sysitry just "compiz"18:22
baizonw30: http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/xfce4 <- this are the dependecies18:23
w30baizon, do I want a window decorator using the Gtk toolkit and the files necessary to integrate compiz with the GNOME18:23
Sysifor window decorator probably yeas, for gnome probably no, doesn't really matter much18:24
w30Sysi, I don't have or want gnome anything.18:24
w30Sysi, do I need a window decorator besides xfce4?18:25
w30what's compiz-core as compared to compiz?18:26
Sysithe very base of compiz, core18:27
Sysiyou can read package deskcriptions if you want to be exact, I can't rmember them all18:28
w30Sysi, I have all the xfce4 goodies18:29
w30Is there a specific compiz for xfce4 or gtk-engines? and not with any gnome or kde extras/18:32
Sysino18:33
Sysiwell xfce has gtk-engine and you probably want murrine and unico/adwaita18:33
w30Sysi, yeah, probably but not worried about eye candy yet, just want cube and wobbly windows and stuff to impress Windows 7 users when they look over my shoulder18:35
w30Sysi, maybe I can set up a sensor to automatically start compiz when they  get within 5 feet.18:38
w30what's compizconfig-backend-gconfig? do I want that? Is that gnome specific stuff that some how got installed on my box?18:42
olbiok, so problem is only on my machine, second computer doesnt have this problem, some1 know to fix this?18:42
Sysigconf is gnome settings-daemon18:42
Sysijust grab the base and install some more when something doesn't work :P18:43
w30Sysi, somehow I have .gconf installed with xubuntu. gnome must be a virus that you can't escape on any ubuntu version.18:44
Sysixubuntu default isn't the purest xfce18:44
w30Sysi, Oh?, How would I do better? I have the internet AND THE TIME?18:45
Sysiinstall minimal system (option in alternate disk) and then install very basics of xfce18:46
w30Sysi, It would to iffy to rip stuff out of my xubuntu regular install I suppose?18:47
Sysinot really, but somewhat difficult and still not same result18:50
Sysithough everything there is needed for *something*18:50
w30compiz-core is the basics or is just plain compiz what to start with?18:51
Sysiapt-cache show compiz ; apt-cache show compiz-core18:52
w30Sysi, I don't think I should start trying to remove stuff; I better do the alternate install like you said *smile*18:53
Sysiyou need to select that iption before starting installation btw18:55
w30Sysi, good to know apt-cache command; thank you18:55
w30Sysi, right, I understand. Maybe I will install that way and dual boot each install to see what suits me.18:56
w30 thank to all, I am gonna start with compiz-core and see what happens; If it foobars, I will try the alternate cd minimal install way.19:04

ISBBi found this page which describes pretty much my issue19:29
ISBBhttp://www.xubuntu.org/node/4919:29
ISBBespecially the part about loggin in and only getting a background only19:29
ISBBhowever if i change lightdm to autologin.  logging in over vnc works great19:29
ISBBif i disable autologin it doesnt matter what session i choose i only get a background image only and the session never fully loads19:30
ISBBwas wondering if ya'all could shine a little light on that subject19:30
ISBBrunning 64bit xubuntu 11.1019:30

GridCube!samba22:05
ubottuSamba is the way to cooperate with Windows environments. Links with more info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently and https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/windows-networking.html - Samba can be administered via the web with SWAT.22:05

=== go8765 is now known as go87654
Sysidefault should be pretty nice.. droid sans with medium or slight hinting22:31
Sysidejavu sans is nice too, and try different hinting settings22:31
Sysiubuntu-font-family is a bit different but cool22:31
eplusis it me or hinting doesn't apply to firefox?22:32
Sysiah, you want msttcorefontf22:32
Sysi!info msttcorefonts22:32
ubottuPackage msttcorefonts does not exist in oneiric22:32
Sysihum22:33
eplusi installed them22:33
eplusjust curious if hinting applies to FF or not22:33
SysiI think not, inside websites22:33
Sysinot sure though22:35
eplusyes you can22:35
eplusabout:config22:35
eplusgfx.use_text_smoothing_setting22:35

eplusin "advanced"22:37
Sysiprobably dejavu, or ms-ones22:37
eplusoh you don't have it open22:37

Sysipicks whatever is default, I don't know how to set that though22:39
Sysiprobably devavu or droid22:39
eplusfirefox | edit | content | advanced22:40
Sysiyup, there22:41
anagandegedit won't open, i've been fiddling with the colour schemes and plugins. It eventually became too cluttered in those folders so I deleted everything in both the plugin and the style folder and now gedit won't open.22:51
anagandeany pointers? :s22:51
holsteinanagande: open from the terminal and note the errors22:51
anagandehttp://paste.ubuntu.com/769519/22:53
holsteinlooks like its looking for the restortabs plugin eh?22:55
anagandegot it working, thanks22:57
holsteincool22:57
Kurdistanguys/girls I think the dock-like thing in xubuntu/xfce 4.8 does not look good22:57
holsteinKurdistan: you know how to remove it?22:57
Kurdistanwhy not go for docky/avant/cario-dock etc?22:57
holsteinright click and remove it22:57
Kurdistanholstein yes22:57
Sysithey're not xfce22:58
holsteinyou can install cario if you want22:58
holsteinyou know how Kurdistan ?22:58
holsteinyou can search the package manager22:58
holsteinits not a dock really, its just an XFCE panel22:58
Sysixubuntu doesn't want to be even more bloated with random goop for "eyecandy"22:58
holsteini personally appreciate that22:58
Kurdistanholstein, yes I do. :)22:58
holsteinthere are *no* extra packages needed to provide this functionality22:59
KurdistanSysi, I understand.22:59
Kurdistanbut is seems a bit out-dated22:59
Sysialso kind of feature-show22:59
Kurdistanotherwise new xfce and xubuntu looks great22:59
holsteinKurdistan: feel free to 'update' as you please22:59
Sysiout-dated :D it wasnt possible before 11.0422:59
Kurdistansysi are you a part of xubuntu dev?23:00
Sysicheck out upstream xfce, that's 90s23:00
Sysinot really, know some of them though23:00
Kurdistan:) anyway I changed to cario-dock, have synapse and jupiter. browsning and chatting without any problem.23:00
Kurdistanit is really responsive23:01
KurdistanSysi, is any of them only here?23:01
Kurdistan:) maybe I should ask this off-topic section23:01
holsteinask what?23:02
holsteinthat it be changed... i personally appreciate the lightness of *not* having cairo, docky, or awn23:02
SysiI'd go for even more conservative default settings, but I wouldn't still use them myself23:04
