=== bladernr_ is now known as bladernr_afk [13:08] I have a problem with installing Jaikoz. Any help please? [13:11] alvasrawuther: Hi. Could you please explain the issue? [13:11] I actually install it fully by through the terminal after downloading the package from the website with the instructions provided there and it does get installed but while searching for it its nowhere to be seen [13:12] not in the start menu, can't get it through the launcher either [13:12] you mean you got soem error like cound not find the package ? [13:12] nope [13:12] it doesn't show up in the launcher to start it [13:12] So, the installation is successful? [13:12] yup [13:12] and a folder is formed too [13:12] but how do i open it? [13:12] start the app? [13:13] Check the desktop [13:13] not there [13:13] In windows, there is an executable file to open an app, what is it in linux? [13:13] what extension? [13:15] alvasrawuther: I think yours is similar to http://www.jthink.net/jaikozforum/posts/list/19.page [13:16] oh! wait. I am looking at a way old link :[ [13:16] I have this version of java [13:16] java version "1.6.0_22" [13:16] OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.10.4) (6b22-1.10.4-0ubuntu1~11.04.1) [13:16] OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b11, mixed mode) [13:17] There is a folder formed named Jaikoz after the installation with many files and some folders related to Jaikoz but how do I start the app? [13:17] I believe the last comment will be the reason. You should run it first as root I believe [13:17] to start playing with it? [13:17] the installation as root? [13:18] kindly read the last comment in the link I provided [13:18] ok thanks a lot let me look at it [13:19] how do i run it as root first time? [13:19] is it sudo -s and start the app? [13:20] what is the file from which to start jaikoz? [13:22] "sudo su" and then "./Jaikoz.bin" I think [13:23] so almost all the app executables in linux end with .bin? [13:27] no [13:27] then? [13:27] sometimes if the case is uncertain, it will be added to the end of the file name like you have now [13:28] but mostly binaries are in /bin;/usr/bin;/usr/local/bin [13:29] so all apps can be opened from their respective binary files after installation? [13:30] Extensions on executables is a bad habit that commercial software developers seem to love. [13:31] so how do i understand how to execute an app? [13:32] also i can't find jaikoz.bin anywhere? [13:32] how do i execute the app now? [13:32] help please [13:32] :) [13:32] Depends on where it was installed [13:33] i installed it in /usr/local/jaikoz [13:33] in the file system [13:35] Ok, then list the files in that directory with the ls command. ls /usr/local/jaikoz [13:35] ok...just a sec [13:37] there you go [13:37] acknowledgement.html jaikoz_it.properties lib [13:37] fpcalc jaikoz_nl.properties license.txt [13:37] fpcalc64 jaikoz_no.properties settingsdefaults.jai [13:37] help jaikoz_pl.properties settings.jai [13:37] jaikoz_da.properties jaikoz.png settings.xsd [13:37] jaikoz_de.properties jaikoz.properties splash.png [13:37] jaikoz_el.properties jaikoz_pt.properties Uninstaller [13:37] jaikoz_en.properties jaikoz_ru.properties uninstall.png [13:37] jaikoz_es.properties jaikoz.sh upgrade.txt [13:37] jaikoz_fr.properties jaikoz_sv.properties [13:37] jaikoz.gif layout.properties [13:37] Ouch, in the future, don't paste multiple lines in the channel, use a pastebin plese. [13:37] oh sorry [13:38] need i do that now? [13:38] Looks like jaikoz.sh is the command you're supposed to run, so try /usr/local/jaikoz/jaikoz.sh [13:39] No, you've already pasted it now. Just use a pastebin next time you need to paste something long. [13:41] it started up but there isn't a shortcut formed anywhere? [13:41] and i'll try to keep things clean next time [13:41] thanks [13:41] :) [13:42] shortcut? [13:43] Well, you could just make one yourself. [13:44] how? [13:44] for jaikoz.sh? [13:44] Right-click on desktop and choose create launcher. Type in /usr/local/jaikoz/jaikoz.sh as the command. [13:44] oh thanks a lot! [13:44] btw are all ubuntu apps installed via the terminal? [13:45] You can probably use the jaikoz.gif as the icon for the launcher. [13:45] thanks again! [13:45] alvasrawuther: No, you generally install software via the software center. [13:45] and for the others? [13:45] THE TERMINAL. Right? [13:45] alvasrawuther: The software you've install appears to be very amateurish packaged. [13:47] yeah, actually it was first made for windows and then for linux [13:47] So is it that the programs which are packaged the well do not need to be run by the terminal? [13:48] they install when you double click on them? [13:48] Yeah, the way it is packaged looks very "windowsy", they don't appear to know linux well. So that's why it's cumbersome to install in Ubuntu. [13:48] YAY! [13:48] so that means i won't have too many problems with Ubuntu software now [13:48] or any problems at all! [13:48] thanks a lot! [13:48] alvasrawuther: For software in general, just open the software center, search for what you want and click install. [13:49] thanks geirha and everyone else who helped me get through this! [13:49] cya!
