amasonmorn all, i have some services virtualbox for example, which currently start on boot and I was wondering how i can stop them starting on boot. They don't seem to use upstart, they use the old init style in /etc/init.d/vbox00:09

ubottuDrake_: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience01:55
Drake_I've installed Kubuntu x64. I had windows7 and ubuntu before kubuntu was installed on the ubuntu partition now my grub is all messed up. All I see is a black screen that says 'grub >' and before that it was in rescue mode. Can anyone help me?01:57
PhireB0mb3r!grub01:57
ubottuGRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager since 9.10 (Karmic). Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 - See !grub1 for releases before Karmic (9.10)01:57
PhireB0mb3rHave you followed the instructions there?01:58
Drake_Yes01:58
Drake_I get errors through some of the steps01:58
PhireB0mb3rI've had similar issues in the past and the article helped me resolve it in getting GRUB back to a working state.01:58
PhireB0mb3rHave you tried using SGD?01:59
PhireB0mb3rSGD == Super Grub Disk01:59
Drake_no02:00
PhireB0mb3rhttp://supergrubdisk.org02:00
PhireB0mb3rGive that a try, too.02:00
Drake_I'm in live-mode right now so I can't burn any discs02:00
PhireB0mb3rIt has a walk-through menu to help you restore GRUB02:00
Drake_also I've tried creating a booting usb, but I get an error at the end02:00
PhireB0mb3rIf you're running LiveCD, you can restore through this, too.02:01
Drake_through the terminal you mean?02:01
PhireB0mb3rYou can go through the Installer and just setup GRUB.02:01
Drake_because on the disc options it said that this ISO comes with no recovery mode02:01
PhireB0mb3rYes, you can do it in Terminal/Konsole, too.02:01
Drake_I've tried countless ways through konsole, with no luck02:03
PhireB0mb3rDid you chroot your drive and bind /mnt /proc and /dev?02:03
Drake_yes02:04
PhireB0mb3rWhat happened then?02:04
PhireB0mb3rWhat messages did you receive when trying to restore GRUB?02:04
Drake_I tried that like an hour ago, and everything went find except for a 'cannot find' excerpt I can't remember02:05
PhireB0mb3rCare to try now and see if you can get that error message again?02:05
Drake_I restarted and got grub, but it only showed my windows 7 install. When I selected it it would restart grub and it'd ask me to choose02:05
Drake_It was an infinite loop u.u02:05
PhireB0mb3rOK. Did you try Google'ing the error message for a path to resolution?02:06
Drake_Yes, nothing really relevant came up02:07

Drake_I'm trying to do the restore grub method. Do I have to mount something before doing 'sudo grub-install /dev/xxx'?02:11
Narilhi02:11
Narilof course not02:12
Drake_I got this "/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /boot/grub (is /dev mounted?)"02:14
PhireB0mb3rYou're on the LiveCD. You have to chroot the device first.02:25

ok_waithey guys, i'm actually not running kubuntu but ubuntu 11.10 with lightdm and unity (just upgraded from 11.04 with gnome) and i'm improvising for lack of functionality and customizations with plasma-desktop.  this http://picpaste.com/Workspace_1_024-3ie5JKam.jpeg menu will not go away once summon for the first time and i can pass clicks through it as though it weren't there. any ideas how to fix this?07:52
szalok_wait: you didn't reboot yet, did you?07:54
ok_waitlol07:54
ok_waitok fine for you :)07:54
ok_wait:|07:59
ok_wait... it still won't go away08:00
* szal has no idea if plasma-desktop was even meant to run w/o KDE08:01
szalmy take: if you don't run KDE, don't expect Plasma to work as expected ^^08:01
ok_waitall the package dependencies were met08:01
ok_waitok i guess that's fair08:02
ok_waitjust for the record, other than this little mishap, it's working beautifully08:02
ok_waitok so plasma-desktop has been killed but the panel and its menu still remains. this doesn't have anything to do with you guys anymore does it?08:13

muesliare there any good alternatives to plasma?10:37
Torchi'd be surprised if there were _any_ alternatives10:40
muesliTorch: kicker, razor-qt, i guess. i bet there are a few more. i'm just fed up with the general brokenness of plasma and it doesn't look like it will be fixed anytime soon10:43
francesco_film10:46
francesco_film10:47
Torchmuesli: i wouldn't call either an alternative to plasma.though... kicker is kde 3.5 tech and razor-qt aims to be replacing all of kde10:49
muesligranted, i'd prefer a kde4 kicker myself, but anything is currently an improvement over plasma :-/10:52
Torchmuesli: what's not working for you?10:52
muesliwhere to even start... :-/10:53
mueslihttp://wstaw.org/m/2011/12/22/plasma-desktopn16883.jpg10:53
mueslihere it show me an activity's name cut-off on the left side of my monitor10:53
mueslion my second activity it shows no name whatsoever10:53
mueslithe third activity shows the name in the right place10:53
mueslihttp://wstaw.org/m/2011/12/22/plasma-desktopw16883.jpg10:53
mueslinotifications are all mis-sized, the button here is just an example10:54
Torchmuesli: you wouldn't even _have_ activities without plasma, so how would "anything" be an improvement?10:54
mueslieach notification appears three times10:54
mueslitwice on the left monitor, once on the right monitor10:54
mueslievery other start it fails to initialize my main panel10:54
muesliit's just missing then10:55
Torchmuesli: that's bad. but i guess it's something about your config, because it's very unlikely such a major bug would go unnoticed and unfixed for long10:55
muesliafter running it for a few hours it constantly uses ~50% of my cpu10:55
Torchmuesli: check which plasmoids you run and if you need them10:55
Torchmuesli: many plasmoids are just buggy10:55
Torchmuesli: but again, you wouldn't get _any_ plasmoids without plasma, so there's no point looking for an alternaitve ;-)10:56
muesliTorch: i've freshly installed kubuntu a few times already. the bugs reappear every time10:56
muesli(since 10.04 at least)10:56
mueslii've even filed the bugs to aseigo, he just keeps coming up with new excuses ;-)10:56
Torchmuesli: well, this is nothing personal between aaron and you10:57
mueslino, of course not10:57
Torchmuesli: if you've filed the bugs with kde, they will get looked at and dealt with.10:57
mueslithat's what i tried to say actually ;-)10:57
Torchmuesli: heh ;-)10:57
Torchmuesli: got a tracker number?10:57
mueslilet's see. might be hard to find because the bugs usually get shot down as invalid / can't reproduce10:59
muesli(and hence don't appear under my reported bugs anymore)11:00
mueslisigh11:00
Torchmuesli: just set up another saved search for all bugs you ever reported11:00
Torchmuesli: should be possible (i don't have that one myself, but i got one for my products, including closed issues)11:01
muesliyeah, just trying :-)11:01
mueslieither way, usually aaron tells me it's my fault for having more than one monitor and an nvidia11:01
muesli;-011:01
Torchmuesli: exactly my setup here in the office11:03
mueslisame resolution on both monitors?11:03
Torchmuesli: works like a charm. and has been for ages.11:03
Torchmuesli: yes.11:03
muesliyeah, that helps a lot11:03
mueslitry different monitors and experience the unusability :)11:04
Torchmuesli: i imagine you might find other DEs not dealing with that perfectly either11:08
Torchmuesli: i'd be surprised if the razor-qt devs currently even intentionally supported that setup, at this stage of their development efforts11:08
mueslidunno, at least i don't expect to see randomly appearing bugs11:09
Torch(this is no excuse for any plasma bugs, of course)11:09
mueslilike my panel just disappeared again11:09
mueslinow it's suddenly popping up cut-off on the top part of the screen11:09
muesliwhereas its border is painted on the other monitor on the bottom part of the screen11:09
mueslihttp://wstaw.org/m/2011/12/22/plasma-desktopO16883.jpg11:10
Torchmuesli: and you've got the panel configured to cover both screens?11:12
mueslinope, it should appear on top of the left monitor11:12
muesliit's appearing everywhere but there11:12
mueslinow it's completely gone :-/11:12

mueslii know i'm asking for a leap of faith here, but i'm a (kde-) dev myself and i reported all of those issues before11:17
mueslithey all got filed as invalid eventually11:17
mueslii've tried wiping all my configs, tried a fresh home dir, tried switching around monitors, bought a new nvidia card, installed every kubuntu since 10.04, tried opensuse and arch11:18

SunTsuszal: that's a recommendation from er when?19:40
SunTsuszal: and you know why ram * 1.5? or x2?19:41
szalSunTsu: heard that years ago, just to be sure you have enough space, I guess19:41
TorchSunTsu: what do you recommend?19:41
szalx2 would be a bit of overkill, I guess19:41
markus_moin19:42
SunTsuszal: because kernel dumps went into swap and you wanted swap left after that19:42
szalGuest59269: probablemente es porque no tienes un nick registrado19:42
horseatingweedsTorch, I would not miss suspend to disk. I always suspend to RAM.19:42
SunTsuTorch: Depends on what one is doing and on how much memory consumption is to be expected19:42
SunTsuhorseatingweeds: what are you going to do with your box?19:43
horseatingweedsSunTsu: It's a desktop, a development environment for Apache CGI stuff, php, mysql, etc.19:44
SunTsuhorseatingweeds: then you probably could do without swap at all. I'd still recommend to have some, if you want to do suspend to disk, a little bit more than ram as Torch said19:45
SunTsuhorseatingweeds: if you don't want to use suspend to disk you very well could live with 4-8GB swap, to catch some memory usage peaks19:47
SunTsumy laptop has 16gb ram, too, currently it uses 7gb, with a vbox taking 4GB of that19:48
horseatingweedsPerhaps I should make a big enough swap partition just to be sure. I'll be doing a fresh install long before I get the 500GB+ of this disk full.19:49
Torchhorseatingweeds: well, it doesn't hurt to have a 20gib swap partition, i guess19:50
Torchhorseatingweeds: and as you say, disk space is nearly free19:50
SunTsuhorseatingweeds: it won't hurt anyway to have swap, but you'll find out that you seldomly need it.19:50

horseatingweedsIt is rather wonderful, disk space and RAM being virtually free. I just put the 16GB of ram in this machine, price was $80, same as the 4GB I put in here two years ago.19:52
Torchunfortunately, disk space tripled in price over the last couple of months. but hopefully things will return to normal soon now the hysteria begins to die down.19:53
szalTorch: what hysteria?19:54
Torchszal: well, of perceived hard drive shortage19:54

horseatingweedsI just installed Kubuntu. I started the updata installed that showed the yellow icon. yofelok, no idea why it would hang there, but anyway:20:56
yofelrun: killall qaptworker20:56
yofelafter that: sudo dpkg --configure -a20:56
yofelthen: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade (make sure it doesn't want to remove kubuntu-desktop)20:57
horseatingweedsDo you run killall under sudo? I ran it without, it said qaptworker(1958): operation not permitted20:57
yofelah, then you'll need sudo20:57
horseatingweedsyofel: how do I make sure it doesn't want to remove kubuntu-desktop? (dpkg --configure -a is running right now)21:01
yofeljust check if it wants to remove it, if it does pastebin the output so I see what it wants to do21:03
horseatingweedsIt says "0 upgrade... 0 0 "21:04
yofel0 to upgrade?21:04
horseatingweedsYeah. But this is a new install, so that would be correct right?21:04
yofelit's ok, that means it did manage to install all updates after all, just got stuck when starting the configuring stage21:05
yofelyou should log out now, that'll make the rekonq error go away21:05
horseatingweedsHow do you log out? lol (new to kde)21:06

horseatingweedsNo. alt+f2 does nothing.21:14
BarkingFishEvening guys - any chance I could possibly get some help please?  I just acquired a new monitor which supports 1280*1024 as its native resolution.  My graphics card is also able to support 1280*1024, but upon boot - the display complains it's been set to 1024*768 - how can I set it to start up at 1280*1024 please?21:15
yofelhorseatingweeds: dist-upgrade really said "0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded." ?21:17
horseatingweedsyofel: yes21:17
yofelhm21:17
yofeldoes it crash again if you press alt+print+k and login again?21:17
horseatingweedsHu... alt-print-k brought up the login screen.21:18
yofelit's the key combination to kill your current session21:19
horseatingweedsCool.21:19
horseatingweedsSo what happened? Something crashed after updating?21:19
yofelnot sure, you said it gave you a crash report21:19
horseatingweedsYeah. I was trying to go though the process of sending it to the developers, but it said the info was not useful, and I couldn't install the debugger. So I gave up.21:20
horseatingweedsDolphin and rekong work now...21:21
horseatingweedsShould there be crash info somewhere?21:21
yofelno, if it crashes again you'll get a notification again21:22
horseatingweedsWould messing with mouse settings of task bar settings during the update process cause such trouble?21:24
BarkingFishthat doesn't seem particularly likely.  Changing the settings of something is unlikely to break an update21:27
who_menope, but the default install of kubuntu may prove a bit ...umm quirky :)21:28
BarkingFishanyone have any clues on my monitor issue please?21:28

BarkingFishI need some help with my monitor. It's a Dell E173FPC, which is default to 1280*1024 resolution. Kubuntu starts it at 1024*768 - although I can change it manually.  Is there anyway I can force KDE / Kubuntu to start the monitor at the correct resolution, to save me manually adjusting it on each boot, please?21:57
BarkingFishMy graphics card is an ATI Radeon X300 SE21:57
TorchBarkingFish: you can always set up your own xorg.conf file and configure the graphics mode(s) manually22:01
BarkingFishI don't know how to.  It used to be xorg.conf was one file, now I find several, and no straightforward xorg.conf anywhere.22:02
TorchBarkingFish: i have one file /etc/xorg.conf that configures my video modes. i do use nvidias binary blob though which is very simple to configure in that regard22:03
BarkingFishi do   locate xorg.conf and it brings up loads of xorg.conf  under .d files, but no solo xorg.conf :(22:03
TorchBarkingFish: i don't think there _is_ one per default. you'll have to create it yourself. but google should help.22:04
BarkingFishhm...22:04
BarkingFishThat's a pain in the behind.  I was hoping it was going to be easier than this.22:05
TorchBarkingFish: you could try toying around with krandr, if that one still exists (it never worked for nvidia, so i didn't follow its development)22:05
TorchBarkingFish: but i guess this will only fix your problem _after_ logging in to KDE22:05
Torch(wild guess here, never tried it like i said)22:06
BarkingFishYeah, I'm using krandrtray to set it manually22:06
BarkingFishI don't want to be doing that on every login though22:06
TorchBarkingFish: can't you autostart it?22:06
BarkingFishagain, don't know how to.  I've only been on Kubuntu about 4 months, and this is the first time I've ever had to mess with xorg or X in any of its forms22:07
BarkingFishIt's only cause of my new monitor, otherwise I'd be running as normal22:07
TorchBarkingFish: system settings -> system administration -> startup and shutdown22:08
BarkingFishTorch: ok, I've added krandrstartup to my autostart area in the place you directed me to - is there any command line arguments I can pass to it to set the monitor the way I need it?22:15
BarkingFishk22:16
TorchBarkingFish: doesn't it save its config and reload it on next run?22:17
TorchBarkingFish: again, i don't use it, it's neither working nor required with nvidia22:17
BarkingFishI'll check it and find out22:17
BarkingFishI'll be back in a tick, I'm gonna log out and restart kde22:17
