[02:04] hello hello [02:04] anyone still up? [02:04] yup [02:04] hey there [02:05] this channel's not as busy as I thought [02:05] really used for ubuntu it meetings and organising meetups and ubuntu hours [02:05] ah, okay [02:05] some times it can be busy [02:05] how big is the irish ubuntu scene? [02:06] never really thought to check it out before, I haven't used Ubuntu in quite a while [02:06] there's a fair few folk using it. [02:06] but a busy irc channel in ireland you might like is tog [02:06] on freenode? [02:07] I'm in there now, thanks! [02:07] yup. it's the irc for the irish hackerspace. http://www.tog.ie/ [02:08] i was just checking it out there, seems cool [02:08] but again it's late. other channels /i/ hang out in are #sixgun and #tdtrs which are linux podcasts related [02:08] i'll check them out, thank you! :D [02:09] but irc has been quiet lately. there was a drop off when g+ was started but people seem to be trickling back lately [02:09] oh wow, a sensible nicklen [02:09] i haven't been on a server with a sensible nicklen in a long time! [02:09] and christmas will have have nerds trapped at home with family on a bit i suspect [02:09] excellent [02:09] heh! [02:10] so what os are you using at the mo? [02:10] well, I use Arch on my laptops [02:10] not bad. i hear good things about it [02:11] Windows for games, mostly [02:11] boo! :-) [02:11] I used Mint for a while for Gnome2 [02:11] heh, I know [02:11] Arch is a nice distro! [02:11] I use debian on servers, though [02:12] I'm a sysadmin for tcd's netsoc and stuff [02:12] sounds like fun. block reddit and time how long before the phone rings. :-) [02:13] but yeah, I can't seem to pull myself away from Arch because of things like pacman and the AUR :P [02:13] heh! [02:13] that's a good point [02:13] aur? [02:13] we grepped our proxy logs a while ago for things like reddit and compared them to debmirror [02:13] pretty great results [02:13] oh, it's the Arch User Repository [02:14] was just looking it up [02:14] user-submitted packages, but you can find basically anything there and it installs as a pacman package, which is nice [02:14] makes it easy to keep track of things as opposed to manually compiling (even if you do compile the packages from source on there) [02:15] so what has you up at this time? you the night shift? [02:15] ah no, just boredom! [02:15] how about you? [02:16] the network will be quiet in tcd for a few days over crimbo. [02:16] oh the usual insomnia [02:16] heh, likewise [02:16] oh, i'm not an admin for tcd! [02:16] thank god I'm not, they're all quite awful :P [02:17] i admin for one of the student societies [02:17] i'm sure they have their reason for their awfulness [02:17] yeah [02:17] windows servers [02:17] :D [02:17] ah well they started off buggered and worked their way downhill [02:17] heh! [02:17] they're one of *those* types of organisations ;) [02:18] probably find they're not allowed to make any real decisions that would improve things [02:18] if only, if only [02:19] well, i'll try to believe [02:19] make it easier to sleep at night! [02:19] and you can always break out a pringles cantenae to connect to nearby wifi in trinity [02:19] :D [02:19] that'd be excellent, but i'm out in Bray [02:19] so I'd need quite the pringles can [02:20] i think the record is quite a few miles at this stage. though it would depend on the part of bray [02:20] It's a good 13 miles or so, I believe [02:20] Worth a go, I suppose! [02:21] But I'm sure I'd find many an unencrypted access point on the way that'd make it useless [02:21] not that I'd ever exploit that, I'm lovely [02:21] a little weather ballon with a directable antennae hanging off it would be neat if it weren't so windy [02:21] that would be pretty cool [02:22] or some sort of solar powered drone as the tech improves [02:22] heh! [02:22] Oh dear, everything I'm saying is being logged [02:23] disclaimer: sorry TCD, I didn't mean it, honest [02:23] how is Ubuntu doing these days, anyway [02:23] ? [02:23] are tcd even aware of irc? it's not msn! [02:23] heh [02:23] well [02:24] I'm sure most aren't, but we're Netsoc! [02:24] ubuntu has growing pains. it's dropped from the top of distrowatch under linuxmint. most likely because of unity [02:24] I saw, yeah :( [02:24] I was just about to mention [02:24] this is a self inflicted wound [02:24] they knew their userbase hated it [02:24] they knew their userbase didn't want it [02:24] Mint is quite a nice distro too, though, even though the package conflicts in the Debian version are quite irritating [02:25] they knew their userbase could choose from a wide selection of other distros [02:25] yeah, alas [02:25] i went with xubuntu myself [02:25] I had that problem with gnome3 in Arch [02:25] now that I have my new ThinkPad, I just use Gnome3 anyway [02:25] It's not so bad once you tweak it a bit, but nothing like gnome2 was [02:26] Unity is a whole new type of awful, though, I'm afraid to say [02:26] have you heard of razor-qt? [02:26] it'll take at least 6-12 months before gnome 3 gets back to the same point that gnome 2 was at. probably longer [02:26] It seems nice, it's sort of a qt take on xfce - a sort of lightweight qt4 kde [02:26] haven't heard of razor-qt [02:26] yeah, I'm sure [02:26] it's quite nice, look it up! [02:26] i only discovered it today [02:27] again, it's basically xfce except qt instead of gtk [02:27] also, have you seen Mint's take on Gnome3? [02:27] well qt has it's own problems [02:27] again, it's quite nice [02:27] ah yes, of course [02:27] qt isn't so bad, though, but i do prefer gtk2 [02:27] keep meaning to try lubuntu and linux mint but never get around to them [02:27] gtk3 i'm not sure about [02:28] don't bother trying lubuntu - just install lxde [02:28] ultimately qt is under nokia which is under ms. so trust in it is... hard [02:28] i'm sure there's a lubuntu-desktop metapackage too (someone who's more familiar with ubuntu can back this up or not) [02:28] ah, i suppose [02:29] i don't see why you'd have problems trusting in a GUI toolkit, though [02:29] one question, how are nokia under microsoft? [02:29] how do you feel about mono? :-) [02:29] mono? [02:29] well [02:29] C# isn't an awful language (compared to, say, java) [02:30] and gtk for mono (gtk#, i think?) is pretty nice [02:30] and i did like banshee a lot a few years ago [02:30] nokia is beholden to ms for cash to keep them afloat for the next few years. they're ditching symbian. killed meego. only winphones from now on. these will not sell. so they're going to die and ms will buy the remains [02:30] ugh, yes, you're probably right there [02:30] but mono is seen by a lot of the open source community as a trojan and not trusted [02:31] ah [02:31] i don't know, it seems a bit extremist to me [02:31] ms has wanted to kill symbian since before it existed as psion organisers use to outsell their wince crap [02:32] again, i don't see how an open-source implementation of compilers for dotnet can be seen as something that should or should not be "trusted" [02:32] people don't like stallman but the longer they're in the industry the more they realise he's right [02:32] stallman is not alright ;_; [02:32] i mean, the man is a genius [02:32] an absolute genius [02:32] just a complete social idiot [02:32] same as most geniuses [02:33] heh, i suppose you could say that [02:33] he takes it to a whole new level, though [02:33] and don't make me link to the foot-eating video :( [02:33] you should follow him on twitter! doesn't post often but they can be fun [02:33] ooh, i think i will [02:33] i don't use twitter much myself [02:33] have you ever seen devops borat? [02:33] quite hilarious [02:34] nope [02:34] DEVOPS_BORAT DevOps Borat [02:34] We have new startup is name Shitly. Mission is we are show you how we are use shit technology so you can able avoid it. [02:35] for tech humour the bofh fills my needs [02:35] DEVOPS_BORAT DevOps Borat [02:35] In devops we are call bash script of more of 50 line of code "slippery slope". [02:35] :') [02:35] bofh? [02:35] looking it up now [02:36] http://www.theregister.co.uk/odds/bofh/earlier.html [02:36] the really old ones are best [02:37] seems funny, but i'm a bit too tired to read so much, i'm afraid [02:38] lots of short stories to throw onto an ereader or phone to read while commuting. [02:38] ahh, commuting [02:39] or communing with the porcelain gods [02:39] heh! [02:42] there's also the irish linux user group irc. not on freenode though, i think. they had a meetup tonight in fleet street. [02:42] oh, cool [02:42] someone on #tog mentioned a meetup [02:42] lots of crossover between the various groups. [02:42] ah, of course [02:42] I wonder is there an Irish Arch community [02:43] but i think there was some meetup in tog tonight for some reason [02:43] it'd be pretty small i think [02:43] ah, okay [02:43] i'd say so too [02:43] you could meetup in a phone box. it'd be the most action the phone box had seen in years :-D [02:44] :D [02:44] hahaha [02:44] go to the next ilug meetup and ask. there might be a few about [02:44] even in irc or on the mailing list [02:45] i will do! [02:48] #sixgun is usually busy on a monday evening around 1900 when a show is been recorded live. off till next year though i think so just back ground noise. [02:49] what is it, exactly? [02:49] #tstrs is usually busy most weekdays around 1300 onwards. some evenings and weekends too. [02:49] #sixgun is the irc channel for linux outlaws podcast. http://sixgun.org/linuxoutlaws/ [02:50] oh, cool [02:51] #tdtrs is a uk pocast that is still new and a bit rough but not bad. http://www.tdtrs.co.uk/ [02:51] nice :) [02:51] but when sixgun is recording there are usually 100 folk in the channel and it's very busy [02:52] nice one! [02:52] sounds good [03:03] bed time, i think [03:03] night! [03:03] cya [03:03] nice speaking to you [03:03] o/
