Being older computers though I thought Lubuntu might have a quicker interface. In this scenario would lubuntu-core or lubuntu-desktop be the best thing to install after installing edubuntu [04:58] umm not sure.. when i did it i just installed lubuntu.. and then installed the edbutnu meta packages [04:59] head_victim: Might be best to just install Lubuntu and add the programs you want. This will also keep the Gnome desktop out [04:59] l057c0d3r: Yeah that's what I should have done but I was hoping Edubuntu would run on these a bit snappier than it's turned out :/ [05:00] These people have never used or even seen linux so I was hoping to keep them both there so they could see more than one desktop [05:00] And let them decide what works best for them [05:00] (that's the reason I'm giving them the computers ;) A sneaky way to intro them to Ubuntu) [05:02] my sisters lappy took a shit [05:02] place she got it wanted an arm and a leg to fix it and recover her files [05:03] well i recovered all her files for her and have her running a custom gentoo / openbox / lxde inspired by lubuntu ;-) [05:04] Hm well HDD space is not critical and they are 3.2 Ghz HT P4s so I might just do lubuntu-desktop instead of just -core [05:10] nothing aginst ubuntu... because i know lubuntu uses the same kernel.. but... [05:10] tried it for a while [05:10] and the start bar thing in unity.. welll [05:10] didnt work half the time [05:11] now lubuntu... I've never had a bad experience with it.. [05:11] besides when i hooked my R.A.T.7 mouse up for the first time.. but was a simple fix [05:15] l057c0d3r: I've never had that problem but then again I avoided 11.04 like the plague. 11.10 has been perfect for me. [05:29] well it should have updated by now :-P so if it was the version that should go out the door [05:30] in my experiences.... gentoo has been the most stable and reliable system i have used... lubuntu comming in a very close second..... for a get a small speed improvement with gentoo... [05:30] so i recemend lubuntu to everyone that is new to linux... [05:30] however ubuntu has had a terible track record with me... one system i installed it on started locking up 6 months in... [05:31] another one would forget desktop settings all the time... [05:31] then the latest problem i mentioned.. [05:31] so far so good with lubuntu.. [05:31] and same went for xbuntu [05:31] before switching to lubuntu [05:32] i would tie most the problems i've experienced in with the desktop manager being used.. [05:32] whoops [05:33] forgot to login to this channel [05:33] hope friends haven't came in asking for questions while i was away :| [05:51] :D [05:51] I love lubuntu 11.10 [05:56] Jakash3: go away [05:56] kidding ;) [05:56] it's good stuff [05:56] installed it on a friend's computer recently [05:56] if you need help, lemme know good sir [05:57] thank you [05:57] kind sir [05:57] actually yeah [05:57] i was wondering if there's any other way to lock the screen besides running the "xscreensaver-command -lock" command [05:58] hrm... [05:58] ctl-alt-del does nothing? [05:58] i'm currently not in lubuntu environment... [05:59] outside of the start menu thingy... you could create an alias for that like "lock" and then just do alt-f2 and type in lock [05:59] ctrl alt del runs task manager [06:00] Jakash3: when do you want it to happen? you can make that command run when you do something [06:00] holstein: what captures keyboard commands? [06:00] i have it set up where super+l runs xtrlock [06:00] Or you could make a keybind (winkey+l?) [06:00] Unit193: hehe [06:01] Bah, holstein... [06:01] holstein: yes, how did you do that and what program is listening for those commands [06:01] you could make super+l run that command [06:01] sorry for not knowing...how do you key bind? [06:01] ybit: i just set a keyboard shorcut [06:01] keybinding [06:01] Jakash3: don't feel sorry i dunno either [06:01] explain or link? [06:01] either [06:02] that was to holstein [06:02] maybe http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1754350 [06:02] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/FAQ/Guides#I_want_to_bind_a_key_to_lock_my_screen.2C_how_do_I_do_it.3F [06:02] ^^ even better! [06:02] ^ good one thx [06:03] But it shouldn't need sudo [06:03] yeah... agreed [06:03] I'll change [06:03] sudo nano...more like no sudo leafpad [06:03] gksudo leafpad [06:04] but you shouldnt need root access to edit that file [06:04] I tested, you don't [06:32] howdy [06:34] anyone here good with graphics problems [06:35] what kind of problem> [06:35] well [06:36] At first I would get half way through install and the screen would freeze [06:36] Then I managed to finish install but said out of range [06:36] installed again , still said out of range but then opened up [06:37] It worked fine for ten minuts and then the screen went ape again -horixaontal lines-I did install the Nvidea driver recommened [06:38] could the refresh rate do that? [06:39] switched from old monitar to flatscreen but horizotal lines is all I got [06:40] Are you on it now? [06:40] no-other screen being used for windows install - [06:40] I will have to reboot and hope it opens [06:41] Do you know what the specs are or what video card it has? [06:42] is nvidia card-machine is emachine El1200 -can look it up [06:42] brb [06:44] NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE [06:45] You could use the alternate installer, but check the output of running dmesg if you can get to a TTY [06:47] what is alternate installer- you mean alternate cd [06:48] Yep [06:49] ok - I am almost done with winders-will try and reboot in a minute [06:49] thnks [06:50] wow [06:50] Yes? [06:50] was reading over what i missed [06:51] I've had the i915 driver crap out on my really badly [06:51] myself.. i get nothing but a black screen... up untill the login screen [06:52] 1915 ? [06:52] and when i logoff. its a glitche screen till power off [06:52] Never had these propblems w/ 9 or 10 [06:58] ok I have control of Lubuntu again-is there any way to get out of the messed up screen other than reboot? [07:01] on the flat screen is says change t0 1280x and then it opened [07:04] I changed the settings but somehow did not manage to save it [07:06] sME THING -GAVE ERROR OUT OF RANGE -CHANGE 1280 then popped open -excuse caps [07:06] rick Emach`1200 [07:09] when I opened it again it said it was set correctly-then blew up again [07:10] guess I need to reformat again-try another versiomn [07:10] that was the alternate [07:14] frankcox672: You should be able to use xrandr [07:15] WHAT IS XRANDR ? [07:15] Mind turning off caps? And it's a terminal way to set screen res [07:15] sorry about caps-keep hitting button === l057c0d3r_ is now known as l057c0d3r [07:16] ok -will try that [07:17] rick [07:20] xrandr failed to set size of gamma output default Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240 current 1280 x 1024 maximum same [07:21] default connected 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm [07:22] it seems to be saying it is set correctly to me but I not real good with video-not at all [07:33] I don't know anything else to do but update tyhe system and see if it works -if not try another version [09:33] I've a friend that installed lubuntu on his 256mb 700mhz computer. He downloaded "50,000" emails into Thunderbird and had Chromium open with 2 tabs, so the hard drive was highly active that it caused screen rewrites to stutter. He left it on overnight, but no change in the morning. I suspected the swap file was hit hard and advised him to view processes with tops @ CLI. Any advice?
