falcon_need to understand something. with these different distros. am using 11.04 want to upgrade to 11.10. am i going to get all the extra packages that you get with an ubuntu 11.10 download or is it just upgrading the kernel. because i don't want the weight of a heavy package14:56
falcon_also when i was trying to upgrade (which i cancelled and had to reinstall lubuntu 11.04) it said it would take 5 hours for the upgrade. but yet you can download ubuntu 11.10  and install in much less time. but i don't want the heavy distro just the kernel upgrade15:00
falcon_part of my message got cut off. i was saying that it would take 5 hours for the upgrade15:02
falcon_with lubuntu is it a full package with just lxde desktop? and if so is it the same thing as downloading ubuntu 11.10 and then downloading the lxde desktop to use with it15:05
icerootfalcon_: there is no difference when upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10 instead of installing 11.10 directly15:05
icerootfalcon_: yes its the same, installing ubuntu and then lubuntu-desktop will get the samw packages as installing lubuntu directly15:06
falcon_why does it take so long to upgrade?15:06
icerootfalcon_: slow internet-speed, low cpu speed15:06
icerootfalcon_: and why you need a kernel upgrade?15:06
falcon_was wondering if maybe new software might not work with older kernel15:09
icerootfalcon_: no15:09
falcon_haven't run into problems yet but thats why i thought you upgrade15:09
icerootfalcon_: i am sure you will never find a software which requeires qare higher kernel15:10
falcon_would like to run lubuntu off of flash drive for speed but want to save files to hard drive do you know how to accomplish this15:11
icerootfalcon_: put / on the ss and /home on the hdd15:11
icerootssd15:12
falcon_would like to take out prompt for password everytime i want to download15:15
icerootfalcon_: ?15:15
icerootfalcon_: what is asking for a password?15:15
falcon_i get prompted for user password when i want to download packages15:16
icerootfalcon_: packages like *.deb?15:16
falcon_anything from synaptic package manager15:17
icerootfalcon_: so you are talking about synaptic and not a browser15:17
falcon_correct15:17
icerootfalcon_: that is normal and should NOT be changed15:17
icerootfalcon_: because synaptic needs to act as root15:18
icerootfalcon_: and for that its using sudo/gksudo15:18
iceroot!sudo | falcon_15:18
ubot5falcon_: sudo is a command to run command-line programs with superuser privileges ("root") (also see !cli). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information. For graphical applications see !gksu (GNOME, Xfce), or !kdesudo (KDE). If you're unable to execute commands with sudo see: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo15:18
falcon_thanx for the links15:18
falcon_what is the best way to shut down computer when it freezes?17:13
holsteinfalcon_: if you can get to tty and sudo shutdown -h now17:13
holsteinif its frozen though, its frozen... if its something im troubleshooting, i'll typically unplug the hard drive, and try to do as much as i can with a live CD... then pulling the power cant hurt anything17:14
falcon_did a computer shutdown by holding down powerbutton down could not boot to disk on powerup17:15
falcon_do i need to flash my bios17:15
falcon_i am presently able to boot using fn + f12 on post screen17:16
falcon_if i just poweron without that i get error exiting pxe-rom boot disk required17:17
falcon_using acer aspire one d255 netbook. went to acer website for file aig32.zip to flash bios couldn't find it . other websites that have it want you to sign up to their downloader17:19
falcon_do you know how to open these acer laptops tried it it's messy17:21
falcon_disk utility is giving me a warning "drive failure imminent" says something about reallocated17:23
falcon_could i still run this thing off an external drive without the internal hdd17:24
falcon_do you know how to use a usb product as a 2nd monitor17:26
falcon_lubuntu 11.04 how do i change background color17:31
falcon_can i download 11.10 to same partition17:33
hyperairlet's do this one question at a time, and in full sentences.17:33
hyperairyour first question: "did a computer shutdown by holding powerbutton down could not boot to disk on powerup do i need to flash my bios"17:33
hyperairi'm assuming you held your power button down to force-shutdown your computer, and following that, you can no longer boot to disk on powerup.17:34
falcon_correct17:34
hyperairi think we can rule out flashing the bios17:34
hyperairif your bios was borked, you would not be able to boot using fn+f1217:35
hyperairi'm assuming that fn+f12 = boot device menu17:35
falcon_no. hold fn down while repeatedly hit f12 on post17:35
hyperairyes, i know17:35
hyperairbut if your bios was borked, you wouldn't be able to POST17:36
hyperairf12 is the boot device menu, right?17:36
falcon_i don't go into menu it just boots up normally from there17:36
hyperairhuh?17:36
hyperairwhat is fn+f12 supposed to do on your laptop?17:36
hyperairon mine it shows the boot device menu17:36
falcon_i don't know i was playing around with combos and it worked17:37
* hyperair facepalms17:37
hyperairso it succeeds in booting up?17:37
falcon_yes, but i would like it to normally without this17:37
hyperairso.... you just hold fn and pummel the f12 key at POST, and it just... boots up.17:38
hyperairwith no interventino?17:38
hyperairno selection of things from a menu or anything?17:38
hyperairwhat do you see before it enters the lubuntu splash?17:38
falcon_correct17:39
falcon_nothing17:39
hyperairthis is very weird.]17:39
hyperairwell what model is yourl aptop?17:39
hyperairoh acer aspire one17:39
falcon_acer aspire one d25517:39
hyperairhttps://wiki.debian.org/DebianAcerOne <-- judging from this... i think that f12 actually opens up a boot menu17:40
hyperairare you really sure you don't see a boot menu?17:40
falcon_only if i hit f12 but not both17:40
falcon_this may be a glitch caused by forcedown17:41
hyperairvery weird17:41
hyperairwell what you can try to do is enter the bios17:41
hyperairand verify the boot device priority has hard disk first17:42
falcon_i changed all combos of boots in the bios17:42
hyperairput hard disk to the top17:42
falcon_did that17:42
hyperairyou have lubuntu installed on the hard disk, right?17:42
hyperairnot a flash drive or anything?17:42
falcon_correct17:42
hyperairhmm17:42
hyperairtry resetting your bios to default settings?17:43
falcon_did that too17:43
hyperairheh weird.17:43
falcon_i thought it may have been a bios driver17:43
hyperaircould you take a video of the screen during the boot up sequence with fn+f12?17:43
hyperairafaik bios don't really have drivers..17:44
hyperairand especially not in laptops17:44
falcon_dont have a video camera ( i know what time am i living in)17:45
hyperairforce-shutdowns also shouldn't *ever* hit the bios.17:45
hyperairthe most it can do is bork your filesystem.17:45
hyperairalso, if you google for $laptop_model service manual, you can probably find instructinos on how to dismantle your laptop17:46
falcon_after post i get blinking cursor then splash lubuntu17:46
hyperairi've opened an acer 4736-series laptop before, to clean the fan.17:46
hyperairthis is weird.17:46
falcon_tried opening this started wrecking it17:46
hyperairyou need to read the service manual17:47
hyperairthere are a bunch of screws to remove17:47
falcon_do they cement these things together17:47
hyperairand a bunch of plastic catches17:47
hyperairyou need to know where the plastic catches are so you can pry them apart without breaking them17:47
hyperairthe service manual documents it all17:47
falcon_didn't know about the catches17:47
hyperairand you have to remove the components in a very specific order (stupid acer)17:47
falcon_showing imminent disk failure warnings will probably have to replace it soon17:48
hyperairfor example, to access the cpu fan of the 4736, i needed to remove... first, the top panel (near the monitor), the keyboard, the monitor itself, wireless, modem, top surface, motherboard17:49
hyperairin that order.17:49
hyperaircompare this to the lenovo y410: unscrew one panel in the back.17:49
falcon_maybe i'll just send it for repair17:49
hyperairyes, that's probably your best bet17:49
hyperairif it's under warranty, that's really your only choice.17:50
hyperairunless you're willing to void the warranty17:50
falcon_i'd still like to figure out how to boot normally17:50
hyperairshrug. maybe something really is screwed in the bios17:50
falcon_can't find the bios file aig32.zip17:51
hyperairi don't know the acer aspire one well enough to know how to fix it with the limited information i'm getting.17:51
hyperairtrust me when i say you don't want to flash your bios on your own17:51
hyperairi did that with my thinkpad17:51
hyperairthe flashing hung halfway17:51
hyperairand the laptop needed a motherboard replacement17:51
falcon_i didn't know it was difficult17:51
hyperairit isn't difficult.17:52
hyperairbut it's expensive if it fails17:52
falcon_i'll just keep hitting fn+f1217:52
hyperairto repair a broken bios, you need to get a replacement motherboard, desolder the bios chips, and exchange them.17:52
falcon_i'm glad i couldn't find the file17:53
hyperairand then it's something like stuffing back the broken bios chip back on the motherboard after it's booted into the bios, and reflashing it17:53
hyperairit's very weird stuff, definitely something you don't want to try with a laptop17:53
phillwthere is a minimal rescue available for some Acer Aspires... which model is it?17:53
hyperairaspire one17:53
hyperaird25517:53
falcon_aspire one d25517:53
phillwthen, you are in luck :) http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/08/acer-aspire-one-bios-recovery.html17:54
falcon_that's not flashing the bios is it17:54
phillwfalcon_: that is how recover if flashing fails and you have a dead machine.17:55
falcon_i'll check it out thanks17:55
phillwas hyperair said, a failed flash of the bios is a really bad situation to be in.17:55
hyperairooh, it has a bios recovery thing17:56
hyperairthat's damn awesome17:56
hyperairfor my thinkpad, i sent it into the lenovo service centre, and waited two weeks for the shipment of replacement motherboards to arrive17:56
hyperairincidentally, the smae thinkpad is now in the same lenovo service centre again for a battery replacement17:56
hyperairyay thinkpad17:57
phillwhyperair: acer are one the under-rated producers of computer & media stuff. I have no hesitation in recommending them to people.17:58
hyperairphillw: they're horrible to open up.17:58
phillwI'm also very impressed with GateWay.17:58
hyperairphillw: i'm very unimpressed with acer after opening it up to service the fan17:58
hyperairmy sister's laptop17:58
phillwhyperair: they are! I replaced a keyboard on one :)17:58
hyperairthe keyboard is pretty simple to access actually17:59
hyperairbut to access the fan...17:59
bioterrorAcer desktops are okay, but with laptops I would try to gather extra money and buy something a little better17:59
hyperairyou have to go from the top down17:59
hyperairfirst the top panel17:59
phillwfortuantely the video on you tube went through it all. Took 30 mins.17:59
hyperairthen the keyboard17:59
hyperairthen the monitor17:59
hyperairthen the top casing17:59
bioterrorhyperair, lenovo does it well with the keyboards. couple of screws from bottom and you can remove keyboard <317:59
hyperair(WHY oh WHY did they make the monitor need to be removed in order to remove the top casing?!)17:59
hyperairbioterror: oh yes. the thinkpad was like that. awesome stuff.18:00
hyperairbioterror: but so is the acer. just a couple of screws from the bottom18:00
hyperairon the other hand, in my thinkpad e220s, the battery's internal and i can't remove it without removing the top casing, which is ridiculously hard18:00
phillwhyperair: just remember to take the long screw out :P18:00
hyperairthe plastic catches on this thing are ridiculously tough to pry open18:00
hyperairi was afraid i'd break the entire thing18:01
hyperairphillw: i broke one of the screwholes >_>18:01
hyperairmissed a screw18:01
hyperairbut the acer service manual is awesome18:01
hyperairit's very detailed18:01
phillwhyperair: motto of the story... watch the video :P18:01
hyperairtells you where all the plastic catches are, and how to pray open the top cover18:01
hyperairphillw: there weren't videos for the thinkpad e220s!18:01
hyperairthe thinkpad e220s service manual was abysmal18:02
phillwahh, not played with a thinkpad in years... I got the one I needed to 'play' with opened up okay.18:02
hyperairit just showed three bloody arrows lifting up the top cover18:02
hyperairand i'm like IT'S NOT COMING OFF. HOW?!!18:02
hyperairphillw: you got one of those retro-looking ones.18:03
hyperairnot the new shiny no-service-panel ones.18:03
phillwhyperair: we should *really* be in -offtopic :P18:03
hyperairwhere you have to remove the keyboard to chance the RAM.18:03
hyperairyes we really should =)18:03
