jubo2Hi. How can I burn .iso into USB stick on kubuntu15:39

ubottuFor information about installing Ubuntu from USB flash drives, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick - For a persistent live USB install, see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent15:40
jubo2I tried the program that came with Xubuntu that enabled me to install Kubuntu but now I try to put debian on the USB stick it says unknown version GNU/Linux and also says that that error is not catched..15:41
jubo2ah oh 'k15:41

jubo2Invalkid16:04
jubo2"Invalid system name: GNU/Linux" says the usb-creator-kde ( same error as on Xubuntu when trying to put Debian .iso file on the stick )16:05
jubo2wth?16:05
jubo2It does say on the app that "this allows you to burn an Ubuntu .iso onto USB stick"16:06
jubo2it doesn't say that the app supports other Linuxen flavours16:06
BluesKaj!unebootin16:07
jubo2srsly does getting an .iso image burned to a USB stick have to be this problematic ..?16:07
jubo2when I burned the Kubuntu using Xubuntu everything went flawlessly16:07
BluesKajgot a cd , use that , sticks seem to be very problematic16:07
jubo2BluesKaj: I don't have an optical drive16:08
jubo2This is awful.. Why can't I install a competing flavour using the usb-creator-kde or it's Xfce equivalent ..?!?!?16:09
BluesKajjubo2, go ask in #Xubuntu16:12
jubo2but I'm on Kubuntu now16:12
jubo2I get the same error with both Xubuntu and Kubuntu "System name unknown: GNU/Linux" or thereabouts..16:13
jubo2it comes in the latter stages of making the stick bootable16:13
jubo2.. the error comes ..16:13
jubo2it expects the string to be [x|k|l]ubuntu apparently16:15
jubo2this is silly if the irritational aspect is ignored16:15
BluesKajhave you looked here , https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick16:16
jubo2BluesKaj: yes, I've looked at that..16:18
jubo2The usb-creator-kde expects a [x|k|l]ubuntu and exits on error that some string was "GNU/Linux" ( Debian ) instead16:19
BluesKajI'd erase and try again , and follow the tutorial ,, installing from a usb looks like additional tools are reqwuired vs the cd burn and install method16:21
jubo2BluesKaj: already tried emptying the stick and trying again16:28

BluesKajPavinati, this is the tutorial I used for running eth0 without network manager in my setup , http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/setting-up-an-network-interfaces-file/18:52
BluesKajthe interfaces file replaces network manager , after setting this up remove network manager and modem manager18:53

PavinatiBluesKaj: ok, i followed the guide... it say to edit /etc/network/interfaces, i did it, but when i restart the networking daemon, it hangs like the dhclient did, in the end it say : failed to bring up eth018:58
BluesKajPavinati, did you remove network manager. if not it will have overwritten your changes in the interfaces file18:59
PavinatiBluesKaj: i purged it18:59
BluesKajPavinati, ip addr19:00
PavinatiBluesKaj: it say many things about eth0, but no ip address19:02

PavinatiBluesKaj: destination : 192.168.1.0   gateway : 0.0.0.0 genmask : 255.255.255.0 flag :  U  eth019:08
BluesKajPavinati, if possible , perhaps a router reboot ?19:09
PavinatiBluesKaj: sure... bute that would mean i'll disconnect from that chat19:10
Pavinatibut*19:10
BluesKajPavinati, unless you have a faulty NIC or cable19:10
PavinatiBluesKaj: i can also change the cable... i don't think the router has any problems, atm i'm connected with the very same router19:11
BluesKajPavinati, , what meanis the router doesn't se your ethernet network card connection and it might pick it up when scanning for interfaces aftera reboot19:13

PavinatiBluesKaj: why not?19:30

BluesKajread the tutorial abou the interfaves file , it replaces nm19:31
BluesKajinterfaces19:31

BarkingFishlol, thanks :)22:16
markus_I am art work :( besides coffee no drugs here :(22:16
pawieckiBarkingFish: do i need kubuntu-restricted-extras AND ubuntu-restricted-extras? Are they different?22:16
BarkingFishpawiecki: they may contain different stuff, you'd be safest to get both22:16
BarkingFishI know about kubuntu-restricted-extras, but not the other one, i don't have it22:17
EvilResistanceyou might not need both22:17
EvilResistancekubuntu-restricted-extras will work for what you need, the ubuntu-restricted-extras might have GTK stuff in it (which requires the GTK runtime installed)22:17
pawieckii'm now installing kubuntu ones22:17
EvilResistance(i think)22:17
pawieckifrom the link you gave me22:17
markus_install both. brings close to no gtk stuff22:17
markus_afaik kubuntu did not install some important stuff22:18
fatummay someone please help me?22:18
markus_!ask22:18
ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience22:18
fatumhello. I might have stolen or give away a few directories when trying to clone an account. not really sure what I have done, but I can't log into my main user account, only into CLI. have used this as an idiot, without reading comments: http://www.ambience.sk/old/user-account-copy-linux22:19
pawiecki!patience22:19
ubottuDon't feel ignored and repeat your question quickly; if nobody knows your answer, nobody will answer you. You can search https://help.ubuntu.com/ http://www.ubuntuforums.org/ or http://www.kubuntuforums.net/ while you wait.22:19
aaschezKDE 4.7. I've a wireless network which got SSID broadcasting disabled from router for security reasons. I've been trying to access my work network by inputting SSID in Network Management and even tried inputting details by creating connection using Manage Connections option but still not able to connect. How can I fix this?22:19
fatumthank you22:19
aaschezThe usual way to access such network is by inputting SSID and password only. I know the SSID and password22:21
pawieckicheck if the SSID and password are correct.22:23
gonzalo_hi guys! having a bit of a problem here on kubuntu 11.10 .. is it just me or KaudioCreator is nowhere to be found?22:23
pawieckithat's pretty obvious but check :)22:23
=== EvilResistance is now known as Resistance
markus_sudo apt-get install kaudiocreator?22:24
BarkingFishaaschez: if the SSID isn't being broadcast, the chances are it's being seen as a hidden network.  The only way I know to get to a hidden network is through the network management Icon, and click <hidden network>, enter the SSID and hit enter, and it should go searching for that SSID.22:24
gonzalo_apt-cache search kaudio comes back empty handed in here :(22:24
BarkingFishbeyond that, I have no idea, other than accessing the router and switch the SSID transmission on22:24
pawieckifatum: could you tell some more details?22:25
BarkingFishhe's gone, pawiecki :)22:25
pawieckiahh sry22:25
aaschezpawiecki: I got one android device which got option Ádd Other network' wherein I inputted SSId and pasword and it got connected easily. Same with Windows 7 with option Óther Networks'' which works as well22:25
aaschezBarkingFish: Yes, I did that. It says <hidden networks> and on clicking it, it says to enter SSID and press enter. I inputted SSID and pressed the enter key but nothing happened, it just doesn't start to configure interface or such or to ask for password22:27
BarkingFishhm22:28
BarkingFishone moment then, let me speak to someone :)22:28
aaschezI asked in #kde if this is a bug22:29
aaschezSure22:29
pawieckiaaschez: hmm what router is it?22:29
fatumI'll ask something more simple, is there a command to restore default ownership of files?22:29
aaschezpawiecki: I tihnk they use D-Link or Juniper22:30
aaschezpawiecki: I don't think its router issue here22:30
pawieckiaaschez: ok i missed what you said about android and windows device22:31
pawieckifatum: i don't know one22:33
Resistancefatum:  i think you'll have to manually restore the original ownership with chown... there's no "undo" command with that command, as far as I'm iaware22:34
pawieckifatum: do you have important data on that pc?22:34
fatumquite important22:34
BarkingFishaaschez: here's a thought.  If I remember correctly, wicd will allow you to connect to a hidden SSID, and it does work :)22:34
pawieckiResistance: how to do so?22:34
Resistancepawiecki:  how to change ownership of files en masse?22:34
Resistanceever hear of the chown command?22:35
Resistancegenerally speaking, if you do ls -l, you'll see ownership of files... for example...22:35
BarkingFishaaschez: try (from command line)  sudo apt-get install wicd && sudo apt-get install wicd-kde22:35
Resistancepawiecki:  http://paste.ubuntu.com/787295/  <-- that's an ls -alshF on one of my directories22:36
aaschezBarkingFish: hmm.. Sure22:36
Resistancepawiecki:  notice ownership is teward teward (user group respectively)22:36
aaschezBarkingFish: I was wondering if NM itself can do that but yes, I'll try that. Thanks.22:36
Resistancepawiecki:  to change that, say to "root root" so that only root has ownership, i'd do chown --recursive root:root /path/to/that/folder/you/see/in/ls22:36
Resistance(as root)22:37
Resistancepawiecki:  and that would change it to "root" user and "root" group22:37
pawieckiResistance: yeah, i tried it on my pc too22:37
gonzalo_maybe im missing something and KaudioCreator goes by under another name in Kubuntu??22:37
pawieckiResistance: i mean just ls -l command22:37
Resistancepawiecki:  ls -l lists the ownerships, yhes22:37
Resistanceyes*22:37
Resistancepawiecki:  but to change en-masse you use the chown command I gave you, replacing root:root with the user:group you want ownership to be assigned to22:38
fatumwell, I have changed ownership of home directory and all subdirectories to someone, who doesn't even have root access. So now my main account doesn't own anything, but has root access and I have all files in /home/22:38
aaschezBarkingFish: Will it connect to it automatically if the SSID is not broadcasting and remember credentials and such like NM?22:38
pawieckiResistance: a stupid question: what's en-masse?22:38
BarkingFishI believe it does remember credentials and the like22:38
Resistancefatum:  you'd need to change your own home directory's ownership back to you, which i can tell you the command to do it with22:38
BarkingFishit's a while since I've used it22:38
Resistancepawiecki:  "en-masse" literally translates to "In mass"22:39
Resistancei.e. all at once22:39
Resistanceor many at once22:39
pawieckilatin?22:39
Kimlarouxgonzalo_, kubuntu can rip audio cds directly from the file manager, just drag and drop the folder containing the format you want. If you still want a program for it, kubuntu comes with K3b22:39
Resistancefatum:  lets say your own user's home directory is "/home/foobar/", and the user and their group is "foobar" "foobar" (user and group respectively)22:39
gonzalo_Kimlaroux: thanks mate!22:40
fatumshould it be  " chown --recursive foobar:users /home/foobar/* " ?22:40
Resistancefatum:  to change that directory back to the user, it'd be done by this command: "chown --recursive foobar:foobar /home/foobar/"22:40
Resistanceno, you don't need the *22:40
aaschezBarkingFish: I'll try that. Thanks. Also I'll try to report the same to the NM dev so that it can be solved in NM itself in updates or such22:40
Resistance--recursive will tell it to go through *everything* underneath that dir22:40
gonzalo_Kimlaroux: im still wondering why is it that I can't find KaudioCreator having all repos enabled ..?22:40
fatumi understand..22:40
BarkingFishaaschez: the guy you need to speak to when he's about, is lamarque who is in #plasma22:41
Resistancefatum:  and :users is if you want other users to be able to see data in the directory, if the chmod'd access rules are allowed22:41
Resistancefatum:  if you want it to be yourUser:users you can replace "foobar:foobar" with yourUser:users22:41
BarkingFishI've just left him a message, but he appears to be away or busy right now, or possibly even in bed22:41
Resistanceand it'll apply correctly22:41
pawieckiBarkingFish: but hmm why NM can't handle it? i mean hidden SSID22:41
Resistance(fwiw, its how I got a directory in /var/<somedir> to be owned by my user (teward) and www-data at the same time :p22:41
Resistance_22:41
BarkingFishpawiecki: we're a version behind22:41
Kimlarouxgonzalo_, I honestly don't know, I never actually hear of kaudiocreator before... maybe the ubuntu team has something against it22:41
BarkingFish2 days after our version of nm was made, a new one with bugfixes was issued, which we haven't caught up with yet22:42
ResistanceBarkingFish:  NM = network manager?22:42
gonzalo_Kimlaroux: ok, good to know, thanks mate !22:43
aaschezYep22:43
fatumResistance: and that's all? aren't there some important files in /home root should own? or something?22:43
Resistancefatum:  root by default can see everything, iirc...22:43
Resistancefatum:  lemme check something22:43
Resistance*grabs his home dir's ls*22:44
pawieckiBarkingFish: hmm so next version is still waiting to be released?22:44
Resistancefatum: the /home/ directory needs to have root:root ownership in default installs22:44
Resistancebut the home subdirs dont seem to need it *checks further*22:44
Resistancefatum:  nope, root doesn't need any ownership within the /home/yourUser/ subdirectory22:45
fatummy home directory is owned by otheraccount:users22:45
aaschezpawiecki: I got the new release with alpha 12.04. Will try if it allows such access22:45
fatumthat might be a problem22:45
Resistancein my setup (one system, one user), its teward:teward22:45
Resistancefatum:  if you're using root you can force otheraccount:users to become youruser:users22:45
fatumyou just said it should be root:root... ?22:45
BarkingFishpawiecki: as far as I know, yes22:46
fatumwait, okay22:46
pawieckihow's  kubuntualpha 12.04 btw?22:46
pawieckikubuntu alpha*22:46
fatumso, just to be sure... "chown --recursive mainAccount:users /home" ?22:47
Resistancefatum: depends on what's in the home dir22:47
Resistancefatum:  by default you do not want to own *every* user22:47
fatumoh, yeah.. so without --recursive22:48
Resistancefatum:  say for a minute there are 3 users: root, foo, and bar22:48
Resistancefatum:  inside /home/, there are two folders, one for foo, and one for bar.22:48
Resistancefatum:  you accidentially transfer ownership of /home/bar/ to the user:group foo:users22:48
Resistancefatum:  meaning bar no longer owns his stuff22:48
fatumso, without --recursive22:49
Resistancefatum:  to return bar's stuff, you'd do 'chown --recursive bar:users /home/bar/'22:49
Resistanceso that everything within the folder which was originally owned by bar is once again added to bar22:49
pawieckihmm i think i got it22:49
Resistanceand foo's access is limited to whatever the users group has access to22:49
fatumno, wait a second. Who should own the home directory itself?22:49
pawieckiroot?22:50
Resistancefatum:  the home directory itself should be owned by root:root in standard setups22:50
Resistancefatum:  to set that you'd do this:22:50
Resistance'chown root:root /home/'22:50
Resistancewithout recursive22:50
fatumgreat ;)22:50
aaschezpawiecki: I installed it yesterday to try latest kernel, so can't say much. You can try it http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20111228/ :)22:50
Resistancefatum:  as for any subdirectories owned by someone else's account, you'd follow the --recursive step i explained above22:50
KimlarouxGah, I hate it when people leave so quickly... I just found out Kaudiocreator is part of the package Kmultimedia22:51
pawieckiaaschez: i would but don't have a good connection to download nor time :/22:51
fatumgot it. I'll try to log in and tell you how it went22:52
pawieckiResistance: but after "chown root:root /home/" root owns only home, or home and subdirs?22:52
fatumwithout recursive, he owns only /home22:53
pawieckiand it should be that way?22:53
fatumworks perfectly. Thanks, a great great thanks to you!22:53
Resistancepawiecki:  only /home22:53
fatumwell, users own their own directories and root owns their home22:54
Resistancepawiecki:  and it should be that way, because by default, root should see all :p22:54
fatumit seems to be right22:54
* Resistance points at fatum's statements22:54
pawieckiyeah but what if i did "chown root:root /home/pawiecki/" and log out. Could i log in then?22:55
fatumone more little question, does it matter if I do /home or /home/ ?22:55
pawieckii'm curious about that one too22:56
fatumand I'm curious about your question actually. you can log in as sudo... but could I log in as user without sudo rights...?22:57
Resistancepawiecki:  no it'd break22:58
Resistancepawiecki:  it'd dump you into a cli environment and say "Unable to load user data"22:58
* Resistance accidentially did what you were curious about one time22:58
fatumactually, it might have been my problem, I have stayed on login screen when i didn't own my home directory22:58
Resistancefatum:  that sometimes happens :P[22:59
Resistance:P *22:59
pawieckibecause i do not have rights to use or even see them then, right?22:59
Resistancepawiecki:  yup22:59
pawieckiquite logicall :)22:59
fatumand it is.... chown who_owns_it:who_can_see_it, do I understand it correctly?22:59
pawieckicli=command line input?23:01
Kimlarouxfatum, Usage: chown [OPTION]... [OWNER][:[GROUP]] FILE...23:01
pawiecki\or command line interface?23:01
fatuminterface23:01
pawieckibut why is the group needed there?23:02
Kimlarouxit's how linux permissions work, I never asked =P23:02
Kimlarouxit just makes sens, take usb for exemple23:02
Kimlarouxif the group "usb" has the rights to use usb ports, then you add users to this groups who should have the right to use usb23:03
Kimlarouxsame thing for audio23:03
Kimlarouxyou can create a user, let say for a kid, that is not part of all those groups, so that the user cannot use these things23:04
pawieckiok, thanks a lot guys, have to go. Goodnight :)23:06
fatumaaaaand so, is there a difference between using /home and /home/ ?23:08
Kimlarouxit depends on the context, are you asking about the chown command?23:09
KimlarouxI might be wrong, but from my experience with linux, their could be a difference:23:11
Kimlarouxusing /home will cange the ownership of the folder /home23:11
Kimlarouxusing /home/ will change the ownership of everything inside it, but not the folder itself23:11
Kimlarouxhhmm, now I'm curious, I'm gonna try it out =P23:12
KimlarouxNo, I was WRONG: it doesn't change anything if you add a / after the folder, it will change everything inside it and the folder itself with the -R option23:15
fatumsounds better. So what does chown root:root /home/ actually do?23:16
c_how do i get a manual/static ip address from my router instead of a dhcp-generated one when IPv6 settings won't let go of eth0 with lucid lynx?23:16
fatum"change ownership of all directories without a name in /home/" ? :D23:16
Kimlarouxit depends if you use the -R option23:17
Kimlarouxwith it, it will change the ownership of everything inside it, including the folders and their contents, including the folder /home23:18
KimlarouxThere's no better way to understand than to doing it ;)23:18
fatum-R is the same as --recursive, i assume23:18
Kimlarouxyes23:18
c_I've been following 2 howtos that don't essentially work; the liberiangeek howto and http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/19541/how-to-assign-a-static-ip-to-an-ubuntu-10.04-desktop-computer/23:19
Kimlaroux-v is also very usefull to learn23:19
Kimlarouxc_, what network manager do you use?23:20
c_both of these howto's tell me to purge network manager, but whenever I do purge I lose all connectivity to eth0, and only the ipv6 settings work -- not the ipv4 settings I set manually23:20
c_Kimlaroux: I'm trying to do it the old-fashioned way, using /etc/hosts, etc/network/interfaces and resolv.conf files23:21
* Kimlaroux nods.23:21
KimlarouxI'm rusty about those files, I haven't played with them for a while... it's sad it's not as easy as it used to be23:22
c_Kimlaroux: but like i said, as soon as i purge gnome and kde networkmanagers that came with this lynx installation, I cannot, for the life of me, get an ip address for eth023:22
Kimlarouxso why do you want a static ip for?23:22
c_Kimlaroux: to make this desktop into a samba server23:22
Kimlarouxokay, I was wondering if it was only a last ditch effort to get some internet going23:23
sithlord48c_ you will need to edit your /etc/interfaces file23:23
Kimlarouxso you tried http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/change-ubuntu-server-from-dhcp-to-a-static-ip-address/?23:23
Kimlarouxwithout the question mark23:23
c_I absolutely must have a samba server on my son's linux computer so that his windows 7 laptop can read/access his linux machine23:23
sithlord48http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/setting-up-an-network-interfaces-file/23:24
c_sithlord48: I did edit that file23:24
c_Kimlaroux: like i said i have followed that^^ howto to the letter, including the editing of the resolv.conf , interfaces, and hosts files, but that howto ^^ also says to purge networkmanager, and that's the problem23:25
BarkingFishc_: Can you assign yourself a static IP in the network manager?23:26
c_as soon as I purge networkmanager, I cannot get any connectivity out of the023:26
Kimlarouxyeah, sadly ubuntu is getting too dependent on GUI, it can be a pain23:26
KimlarouxBarkingFish has a point...23:26
BarkingFishI do it with my Wifi, I assign a specific IP miles away from anyone else using the wifi router, so I know I'll get the same address each time.23:27
c_BarkingFish: yes, I've assigned a static ip every which way, including network manager [192.168.1.102], but after I purge networkmanager, I can't get that assigned ip addy23:27
Kimlarouxoutch, you're assigning yourself an ip within the routeur's DHCP range?23:28
c_Kimlaroux: I've also put the 102 address with this mac address in the router's firmware23:28
Kimlarouxyou know it's not that hard to change the routeur's range... make it start at 10 instead of 0 and use those 10 ips as static ones23:28
c_Kimlaroux: yes, I know the router's range isn't hard to change; I've already tried that, too23:29
BarkingFishthe quickest way then, is don't purge the network manager.23:29
BarkingFishThere's no real reason to purge it unless you're basically starting again from scratch23:29
Kimlarouxc_, first we gotta know if the problem is not network, if you can't assign your PC this static ip through a GUI, then it might be network related23:29
c_BarkingFish: but then I'll only get to use the dhcp address (192.168.1.101), and the whole point is that I have to have a static ip addy for samba server23:30
Kimlarouxc_, if Knetworkmanager is giving you a headache, purge it and install Wicd. Wicd has a simple to use Static Ip settings23:30
BarkingFishthe other option then is that you either try wicd, or set up a second ethernet card in the PC, and use the restrict connection function in the network manager.23:31
c_Kimlaroux: I know problem is not the network because I can access my ondaatje samba server, and access the internet itself with dhcp23:31
Kimlarouxdhcp yes, but the routeur might like your static IP settings...23:32
c_Kimlaroux: I've disabled my wireless capability on my router....I hate wireless23:32
Kimlarouxespecially if you are trying to use an IP within the range of the routeur's DHCP adresses23:33
c_wired is simply faster, more reliable, and more secure23:33
c_Kimlaroux: I've already tried making the router's address range above the ip address I want for my servers23:33
BarkingFishthen a second ethernet card is the way you need to be heading - configure one for net access, and the second as static for the samba connection23:34
c_BarkingFish: that's one thing I haven't tried yet, and I can see/agree with your logic23:34
c_however, I usually disable a second ethernet port on my pc's 'cuz they're usually no end of headaches23:35
Kimlarouxindeed they are ;)23:35
BarkingFishPersonally, as a fan of wifi, I'd go with wired for samba, wireless for net service23:35
BarkingFishbut as you're not keen on wifi, it sorta limits routes you can go down23:36
BarkingFishwifi is nice, but it's only as secure as you're prepared/able to make it23:36
KimlarouxBut if he can't even have a static ip going, how will adding a card help? He'll still have to set it up with a static IP somehow23:36
c_yeah, and considering that this new installed pc is right beside the new router...wifi seems pointless on this particular machine23:36
c_Kimlaroux: thank you23:37
BarkingFishKimlaroux: because it will split the connections up - the one card can use the net, second card can be set with a manual IP assigned, and restrict connection to this interface in nm23:37
c_I hadn't thought of that, but you're absolutely correct:  if I can't get a static ip on the first eth, I will have the same prob with the second eth23:37
BarkingFishthe thing is, you're essentially looking to do two things through one IP, if I understand you correctly23:38
Kimlarouxso he has to get NM back... why did you purge it in the first place, c_, did it give you trouble?23:38
BarkingFishYou want the static IP for samba, but need to connect to the net through it, right?23:38
c_Kimlaroux: I've got NM back...I purged it because the howtos told me to23:39
c_BarkingFish: yes23:39
c_I was always able to do this with earlier ubuntu versions, but not with lynx23:39
c_e.g. my other server in the other room has a static ip, connects to the net, is a samba server, and has hardy heron23:40
c_NM in lynx seems to the culprit23:41
KimlarouxYeah... it's one of those things I get rid of on a fresh install ;)23:41
BarkingFishnm is actually broken at the moment, c_ - there are bugfixes due out on the next issue of Kubuntu - I've not long been discussing that.23:41
BarkingFishnm-08 and prior have some bugs in23:42
c_Kimlaroux: that's exactly what I'm trying to do at the moment, get rid of NM with this new install23:42
Kimlarouxso you got 10.04? This is what I got too... I use Wicd instead of NM, works flawlessly for both wireless AND wired23:42
Kimlarouxgive it a try, static ips are just two clicks away in Wicd23:43
c_BarkingFish: k, that doesn't surprise me, when is the next issue of kubuntu come out?23:43
BarkingFishapil '1223:43
BarkingFish*april 201223:43
c_too far in teh future, I'm afraid, I need a static ip capability for samba server now23:43
c_or at least my son does, and he's counting on me23:43
BarkingFishgo with Kimlaroux's idea then, switch to wicd over nm-applet23:44
BarkingFishyou may find it easier to config, it's been a while since I used it personally23:44
c_k, will try wicd...do I have to enable the wireless capability fo my new router for wicd?23:44
Kimlarouxno, Wicd works with Wired23:45
Kimlarouxit automaticaly detects your wired connection23:45
c_good...a neighbour has an unsecured wireless and methinks I've made him/her go over the 25G Rogers download cap already this month :(23:45
c_Rogers burns me to no end23:46
c_I used to be a rogers customer years ago, but their all-day throttling drove me to dsl and teksavvy23:48
c_k, konversation had to be installed separately, and there's no menu entry for it, so I'll need the command to create a launcher for it? anyone know the command?23:49
KimlarouxI usually creates the entry manually23:50
Kimlarouxthrough the "Menu Editor" when you right click on the launch button23:50
c_and where's the menu editor again?  I used to be able to do this in hardy no problem, but lynx....grrr........23:51
Kimlarouxthe K button, right click on it23:53
c_Kimlaroux: thx...got it, but what's the command?23:55
Ryllez89guys, the tutorials for ubuntu is the same to kubuntu?23:56
c_wait...it's already there23:56
c_but why wasn't it before I found menu editor again?  so annoying23:57
