DaraelSo I've got a machine here which has two DVD drives, but neither of them appear to work and I don't have a blank CD anyway.  Problem is, my bootable USB stick doesn't work:  I can select it first in BIOS, or from the one-time boot menu, but I just get a screen with the text "Boot error", and if I hit enter it loads from the first hard disk.  Any ideas?13:37
DJonesDarael: That sounds like there may have been a problem creating the usb stick, or maybe a corrupt download13:39
DJonesHave you tried the usb stick  with another machine to check that it will boot on that13:39
DaraelI've used it before on severalmachines.13:39
DaraelFurthermore, I tried re-making it using UNetbootIn, and it still didn't work.13:40
DJonesThat would seem to rule that out as a problem then13:40
jacobwdo you have a usb optical drive?13:41
DaraelNot to hand.13:41
DaraelFSVO to hand == in the same country, unfortunately.13:42
DJonesAre there any more details about the boot error13:42
DaraelNothing.13:43
DJonesI can't even think of a way of diagnosing that when there's no other error information13:44
jacobwif the usb drive boots in other systems it proves that it works13:47
DJonesI'd  be tempted to try downloading another iso of something else, maybe knoppix or evenjust a gparted disk to test whether that will boot to try and rule out a problem with the usb port13:48
DaraelIt's an incredibly uninformative message, which is a right pain.13:50
DJonesI'd  be tempted to try downloading another iso of something else, maybe knoppix or evenjust a gparted disk to test whether that will boot to try and rule out a problem with the usb port13:51
jacobwif it works in other systems before and after you tried it in the affected system i think you can reasonably sure it works13:52
jacobwhow many hard drive bays does this system have? can you write the installer image to a spare hard drive, install the hard drive and boot the installer from it?13:53
DaraelI'm reasonably sure the USB key isn't to blame, but I want to know if the BIOS is objecting for some strange reason or if there's very odd hardware causing an error.13:53
DaraelIf I was at home, I probably could.  Problem is, I'm kind of in rural India at the moment.13:54
jacobwok :)13:54
DJonesIts not something daft like the usb stick is 64 bit and you're booting a 32 bit machine, normally that does give a more informative message though13:54
jacobwwhat bios is it?13:55
DaraelDJones: I'm using a 64-bit stick, and it's a Pentium D (which is 64-bit capable) so it /should/ be fine, but I tried making a 32-bit version just in case and still no joy.13:57
Daraeljacobw: I'll have to reboot to check.  Back in a couple of minutes.13:57

penguin42cocoa117: Do you have the spanner icon at the top right of the chrome window?14:06
cocoa117penguin42, yes i do14:07
cocoa117oh, using exit!!! damn it14:07
penguin42:-)14:07
cocoa117penguin42: thanx, :)14:08
penguin42np14:08
DaraelRight.  The boot splash shows an Intel logo, and the BIOS version is given (in the configurator) as TS94610J.86A.0047.2006.0911.100114:08
DaraelAhem.  0110, at the end, actually.  But still.14:09
penguin42Darael: How did you write the USB stick, and what version of Ubuntu are you trying to boot?14:09
Daraelpenguin42: Initially the USB creator, later recreated with unetbootin.  Oneiric.14:10
penguin42Darael: If I remember correctly, Oneiric now lets you do it using a more basic way using dd14:11
DaraelAh.  Google turns up something about that BIOS assuming everyone runs Windows and refusing to load a partition bithout a boot flag.  I think I'll fire up the Disk Management tool and set one, see if that works.14:12
penguin42Darael: What make is the machine/motherboard?14:12
Daraelpenguin42: The machine, according to the computer properties dialog, is made by RP INFOTECH, T.V.R (whoever they are), and The Internet says that BIOS only shows up on Intel Desktop Boards.14:16
penguin42OK, yeh I've come across boards that need the boot flag - but I'd be surprised that the standard image doesn't have it14:19
DaraelWell, setting it would be nothing to do with the image - not that it's be any less surprising for the standard /tools/ not to set it.14:20
DaraelHowever, I can't work out how to even see if it's set from within Windows, and without boot media or another machine, Windows is all I've got.14:21
penguin42on oneiric you can actually splat the image straight onto the drive with dd14:21
Darael...but I don't have access to dd; I've only got this one machine and it's Windows-bound right now.14:23
penguin42ah ok14:24
DaraelThe boot flag isn't the issue, though :(14:25
DaraelIt appears to be set.14:25
penguin42Darael: Is it possible it's too old to boot off USB?14:27
DaraelConsidering the BIOS has options related to USB booting, including the option to always do so if possible, I'd say no.14:28
DaraelHmm, I note that Intel's Download Center has a BIOS Update TS94610J.86A.0087.blah - I wonder if the difference (form blah.0047.blah) contains a relevant fix... maybe worth a try?14:28
* Darael reads the release notes14:29
* Darael considers that perhaps forty BIOS versions is an update that's worthwhile /anyway/.14:30
DaraelI'm going to try it.  Back... when I'm back.14:33
penguin42good luck!14:34
DaraelRight, well, on the one hand updating the BIOS made no difference, but on the other, INSPIRATION!  Chainload off the Windows bootloader.14:41
popeyAfternoon all14:42
mattthowzit popey14:42
DaraelArternoon, popey.14:42
directhexi've chainloaded off ntldr before14:44
directhexi don't think it will boot non-windows partition headers directly, but it *will* boot a bootloader from a file on a fat32/ntfs partition14:45
DaraelDunno if I can persuade it to work with the partition in question on an external drive, but hey, it must be worth a try, right?14:45
penguin42Darael: I'd also see if you can try one of the simple grub boot disk images14:46
Daraeldirecthex: Since I'm trying to get U install media going (no balnk CDs and the optical drives hate me anyway, weird BIOS (I think) problem with USB boot), that should be workable.  Right?14:46
Daraelpenguin42: Good plan.14:47
monsterwizardI'm considering learning more asm14:47
penguin42Darael: Also, your two DVD drives - what controlers are they plugged into, and your USB is there more than one controller to try?14:47
penguin42monsterwizard: Go for it - it's fun14:47
monsterwizardnot sure what  I should use14:48
monsterwizardI want to learn more asm8614:48
popeywhy?14:48
monsterwizardI've been usung the ___asm directive14:48
jacobwhttp://diveintopython3.ep.io/14:49
Daraelpenguin42: I haven't actually opened this thing up yes, so I can't answer the former (but I'd have to get blank media even if I could persuade them to work properly), but as for the latter:  The other USB port on the front panel seems to be fried, and I've yet to look at the back.14:49
penguin42Darael: Might be worth trying other ports; it's possible it has more than one controller and it doesn't like booting off one14:49
Daraelpenguin42: Indeed, thanks for the reminder.14:50
* Darael tries Unetbootin-ing a Super Grub Disk.14:51
penguin42Darael: If all else fails you could try netbooting14:52
DaraelNetbooting from /what/?!  Surely I'd need either something bootable with a netinst image or another machine.14:53
penguin42oh yeh - forgot about that :-)14:54
DaraelFrankly, to save on downloads, I'm only going to be booting mini.iso anyway.14:56

penguin42if you can get ANYTHING to boot your better off than at the moment14:56

Supermanintightsthanks23:41
Supermanintightsi'm sorry for so many questions last few days23:41
popeyseriously, don't worry about it23:41
popeyits why we're here23:41
popeyjust don't be surprised if sometimes people don't gove you the direct answer, but more 'teach a man to fish' answers23:42
jacobw'/' is the top of the file systems, '/home/jacob/' is my home directory '~/' is the top my home directory, './' the current directory23:42
Supermanintightswell - either way, you guys have all been great, really patient considering i've practically had my hand held for every step23:42
penguin42Supermanintights: How did you get the thing to install in the end?23:42
popeyyeah, this channel has a good bunch of ppl23:42
Supermanintightsi don't mind researching stuff - i just tend to get confused on certain steps - like when it tells me to edit something  -  i don't know how to save etc.23:43
Supermanintightspenguin42, Ubuntu?23:43
penguin42nod23:43
Supermanintightswell you put me on the right path with telling me about GPT - MartijnVdS told me the bedtime story on GPT and it's history, then a few people tried helping me to change it from GPT to MBR - no luck, eventually I just played about in Gparted, and somehow managed to change it to MBR - total lucked out with it, but it worked23:44
penguin42ah ok23:44
Supermanintightsthen jacobw was a diamond in helping me prepare the harddrive partitions to do what i wanted it to do23:44
Supermanintightsno idea if Windows will read the partition - i'm downloading the drivers now, then we'll see when i go into it23:45
Supermanintights(what a way to spend NYE)23:45
penguin42I'd hope there is a bug somewhere about Ubuntu not installing on GPT properly - it really should and GPT is becoming much more common23:45
penguin42Supermanintights: Oh, you think that's an odd way to spend NYE?23:45
popeyNTFS is probably the easiest filesystem to use cross windows/nt23:45
penguin42sounds perfectly normal for me :-)23:46
Supermanintightswell i [put my bug out like you said23:46
Supermanintightsalthough no one has commented23:46
Supermanintightsi'm trying to figure out how to get ubuntu to read my HFS usb stick so i can get my documents and have my usb stick back again23:46
Supermanintightsbut one thing at a time (I got a huge recovery project to do on a 2tb harddrive once this is all sorted - not looking forward to it)23:47
Supermanintightsstill i've had more fun in 1 day of ubuntu than i did in a month of OSX23:48
popeyGood to hear23:49
