tatiehello, i installed virtual midi keyboard however nothing happens when i press the keys. midi sound doesn't play. am i missing somehting here?+18:48
holsteintatie: yup... you'll need to route it to a sound18:49
tatieamarok is playing MP3, VLC i use for AudioCD, but midi i haven0t tried so far18:49
tatieok how do i do that?18:49
holsteina lot of the stuff in ubuntustudio doesnt do anything... you need to know how to pair them up18:49
tatiei am using Kubuntu18:49
holsteinthe virtual keyboard is just that... a virtual keyboard18:49
holsteintatie: its all ubuntu18:49
tatiein windows it plays ok18:50
holsteinthe same repos18:50
holsteintatie: in windows, what plays ok?18:50
tatiethe virtual keyboard18:50
holsteinnot the virtual keyboard from the ubuntu repositories18:50
tatieVMPK18:50
holsteinnah18:50
holsteinthats not the same application, AFAIK18:50
tatiewell no obviously not bu tit's the same one. got it form sourceforge18:50
holsteinanyways, you need to route it to a synth18:50
holsteinyou can use aconnectgui18:50
holsteinyou can use JACK18:50
holsteinyou can go into the applications and do it somehow as well, but i use JACK, which has its own learning curve18:51
tatieno i do not have an instruments. i wont' to mkae sounds  with computer keyboard. i can do that in windows wiht this porgramme18:51
holsteintatie: right, this is *not* windows18:51
holsteinthe one in windows is a standalone application18:52
tatiehttp://vmpk.sourceforge.net/18:52
tatiethis is it.18:52
holsteinwith sounds and the controller all in one place18:52
holsteintatie: let me say...18:52
holsteini have used the virtual keyboard in linux18:52
holsteinand it makes sound18:52
holsteinif you would like to hear about how that works18:52
holsteinits *not* the same as in windows18:53
holsteinif you are looking for an all-in-one , standalone application that is its own controller and application, check out lmms18:53
tatieAh so same porgramme with same source code wokrs in windows (plays sounds when you press a key) but not in linux after install?18:53
holsteini dont think lmms requires JACK18:53
holsteintatie: i dont know what is automatically happening in you particular windows installation midi-wise18:54
holsteinthe virtual keyboard isjust that18:54
holsteinit makes no sound18:54
holsteinit only controls sound modules18:54
holsteinyou might have something automatically routing the midi signal in windows for you18:54
holsteinthe way i do it...18:55
holsteini open jack, start it.. that is controlling my audio at that point, then i route whatever applications or hardware to whatever other applications or hardware (virtual or otherwise)18:55
holsteinthe way you might want to do it is to just install lmms, and try and make the virtual keyboard use some of the sounds im lmms18:56
holsteintatie: virtual keyboard makes no sound... its not a bug, its just not what it does18:56
holsteinthe most simple one i usually talk folks through is using JACK with a virtual or actual keyboard and zynaddxubfx (or the newer fork, yoshimi)18:58
holsteinthat is the way MIDI works... you have a controller and a synth, or tone generator, or sound module... MIDI brain is what they call it18:59
holsteinwhen you see that in action on a hardware level, there is an actual midi cable plugged between the hardware18:59
holsteinnow, we can do that via USB, or just inside the box in routing hardware such as JACK, or aconnectgui19:00
holsteinthere are applications, and actuall hardware that are both controllers and sound modules, but these are usually lower end, more consumer grade gear19:01
holsteinnot very "garage-band" like19:01
holsteintatie: feel free and check with the some of the MIDI experts i hang with over in #opensourcemusicians19:03
tatiethanks this is too complicated19:03
holsteintatie: yup19:03
holsteintatie: lmms is not though19:03
holsteinits all in one, and cross platform19:04
holsteinvery "garage-band" like19:04
tatiein windows i tried two keyboards and one i only untziupped while this one i extracted the exe file. when i press the buttons on computer keyboard it produces sounds. i can change the type of sound (for example drum, violing...just like with syntesizer).it doesn't require any programming, routing, additional setup nothing. i remember a short porgamme in BASIC on spectrum that did the same /similar thing albeit with limited soiunds it could19:06
tatieproduce)19:06
holsteintatie: yes... lmms is like that19:06
holsteintatie: however, that is *not* just like a synthesizer19:06
holsteina synthesiser is just that19:06
holsteinits synthesises sounds19:07
holsteinthe fact that we associate that with a keyboard, and an all-in-one unit is actually mis-use of that term19:07
holsteinthey call that a 'workstation'19:07
holsteinan all in one19:07
tatiei am looking at lmms it porduces no sound19:07
holsteina synthesiser (hardware or otherwise) has no controller necessarily, though it can19:08
tatiethough the lights blink when i click on keyboard19:08
holsteintatie: you might need to check the routing19:08
holsteini find the addition of the pavucontrol package helpful when troubleshooting pulse audio sound19:10
tatieQsynth1: Failed to create the audio driver (jack).19:16
tatie0:16:36.299 JACK is starting...19:17
tatie20:16:36.299 /usr/bin/jackd -dalsa -dhw:0 -r44100 -p1024 -n219:17
tatie20:16:36.307 Could not start JACK. Sorry.19:17
tatie20:16:44.693 JACK was stopped with exit status=255.19:17
tatie20:16:44.694 Post-shutdown script...19:17
tatie20:16:44.694 killall jackd19:17
tatiejackd: no process found19:17
holsteintatie: yeah, i would like for you to avoid JACK use if you can19:19
holsteinits not trivial, and quite overkill for what you are doing19:19
holsteinhttp://lmms.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Troubleshooting19:20
holsteini would look at the routing...19:20
holsteini know i keep saying that, but at some point, you have to look at thw routing, of configuration... whatever you want to call it19:20
holsteinyou need to see that the audio device/driver, whatever you want to call that, inside of LMMS, is set to alsa, or pulse, not JACK19:21
holsteinthen, you should have no issues with JACK then19:21
holsteinyou can also look and see about the MIDI routing... make sure that an instrument is selected19:21
holsteinif you see a light in LMMS, you could be triggering the controller, and have not selected a sound yet19:22
holsteintatie: qsynth works with JACK19:22
tatielmms works now.19:22
holsteintatie: qsything is *not* trivial19:22
tatiebut it crashes often19:24
holsteinare you one 10.04?19:24
tatieeh i give up. time for dinner anyway. thanks for the help. i will look into documentations a bit more see if i can figure it out19:24
tatie10.1019:24
holsteinyou could look for a PPA19:25
tatiewill try19:25
holsteinanyways, the dev hangs in #opensourcemusicians sometimes19:25
tatiethanks again. bye,19:25
