=== darkmatter is now known as m3g4tr0n === m3g4tr0n is now known as darkmatter [04:14] hi [04:14] anyone here? [04:15] GykGyrl: me [04:20] 8op [04:20] i so need help with sound [04:21] im suing the latest of ubuntu studio, and i lost sound all together [04:21] if i boot into a live version i have sound again... [04:21] and i am really new to linux [04:22] GykGyrl: i would look for an older kernel in your grub menu [04:25] GykGyrl: what im proposing is, you took a kernel upgrade that doesnt support your audio hardware [04:25] it could also be that you have the sound turned down or muted in XFCE and mabye are not totally familiar with that UI [04:26] its not muted i found the sound settings... and i played with all the slyders.... [04:26] how do i check the grub menue [04:28] GykGyrl: i had a situation where the buttons would mute, but not unmute [04:29] the keyboard buttons [04:29] that is with pulseaudio and XFCE [04:29] which is what you have [04:29] so, if you dont mind, double check the settings there in the UI [04:29] then, open a terminal and run alsamixer [04:30] hit F5 and look there and see that all is how you would expect [04:30] you can also install pavucontrol, and try that [04:30] i dont think you should edit grub [04:30] i think you should just look and see if there is an older kernel, and boot it, temporarily... but try these other options firts^ [04:30] first* [04:34] ok im confused a little... but tryin it now [04:36] GykGyrl: just decide what you want to try, and ill help you [04:40] ok i did alsamixer and its all up all the way [04:40] GykGyrl: well, you dont necessarily want everything up all the way, unless you do [04:41] just be aware, thats how you can break something [04:41] ? [04:41] GykGyrl: i didnt say go in there and turn everything all the way up [04:41] um... i feel like a tool [04:41] thats all im saying... so you realize that cant hurt, or break something [04:41] like your ears ;) [04:41] oh... lol [04:42] i lke it loud [04:42] 8o) [04:42] anyways... did sound ever work? [04:43] oh yeah [04:43] loved it [04:43] so, what broke it? [04:43] an upgrade? [04:43] i did update a few days ago, then when i rebooted [04:43] poof [04:43] nothin [04:45] ok i changed to the right computr [04:46] i was going back n forth it was annpying [04:47] how do i check the drub setting [04:48] grub [04:48] g33kgrl: you can just reboot, and hit shift to see the list [04:48] you can look at [04:48] !grub [04:48] GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager since 9.10 (Karmic). Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 - See !grub1 for releases before Karmic (9.10) [04:48] ^^ see if you want to unhide your grub list [04:48] i suggest this as a troubleshooting step, not really something you need to change permanently, or worry about [04:49] ok so i have to reboot [04:49] brb [05:07] ok im in a previous kernel... no sound still [05:10] gykgyrl: ok, so i know you dont want to hear this, but its likely something in the UI you have hit [05:10] you can also try installing pavucontrol [05:11] ok trying it now [05:37] ok it was installed, so i reinstalled it [05:39] pavucontrol [14:44] Anybody know if enabling home folder encryption will cause issues (latency, etc) when recording to harddrive? [15:02] arges: not latency, but higher cpu usage [15:02] falktx, even with hardware aes? [15:02] aes? [15:03] the encryption algorithm has a hardware accelerator [15:03] arges: I tested ~2 years ago, there's a bit more cpu usage when writing/reading stuff from disk. not sure how it handles it with aes though [15:04] falktx, i usually have cycles to spare (mostly tracking and not running effects) [15:04] might as well give it a shot, worst case I can always record to a non-encrypted directory [15:05] thanks [15:45] arges: you should always record to a different hard drive anyways [15:45] holstein, why is that? [15:45] performance [15:46] ideally, you could track to a raid array or something :) [15:46] anyways, theres no reason to record inside the encrypted area [15:47] if you were to go into a pro studio, they would be tracking to a different drive that the OS is on [15:47] holstein, it just seems odd. so who is using the harddisk that much when recording other than the recording program? [15:48] if we have sufficient memory in a system, we shouldn't be using the swap [15:48] arges: do what you like [15:48] i dont track to the same drive my OS is on [15:48] havent since i started [15:48] holstein, i'm trying to understand why people do that : ) i've heard it too [15:49] arges: performance [15:50] if im tracking 24 tracks and 24/96, i might need something faster [15:50] plus, i might want some swappable drives so i can archive or whatever right from the disks kind of like they are analog tape [15:50] holstein, yea that's another good reason [15:51] when im just tracking stereo data in the field, i'll just do that on the local disk, or even just some USB drive [15:51] * holstein gotta run [15:51] feel free to ask around in #opensourcemusicians [15:52] cya [15:52] thanks [23:17] hi i was looking to get some help with a sound issue with ubuntu studio... can anyone help? [23:20] g33kgyrl: you can ask here, or depending on how studio related it is, you can ask in #ubuntu or #ubuntu-beginners [23:21] also #opensourcemusicians [23:21] im about to run out, but i'll take a look :) [23:22] wow thats why i like this version of linux [23:22] i want to do music with it [23:22] welll i had sound untill yesterday, wehn i rebooted... it was fine for about 2 weeks [23:23] i checked the alsamixer everything is up [23:23] g33kgyrl: i would suggest maybe installing whatever DE you are comfortable with using [23:23] the grub i went back to my previous version, and it didnt work [23:23] and im stuck there [23:23] it sounds to me like there is something in the UI that you are not familiar with [23:23] whats a de? [23:23] im smart, but new to linux [23:23] DE = desktop environment [23:24] XFCE is probably not the one you are used to [23:24] you could have hit the mute button, and got something muted [23:24] also, like i mentioned before, when i mute in XFCE from the keyboard shortcuts, there is a bit of an issue unmuting [23:25] i would literally open all sound settings, including pavucontrol and start looking for mute buttons [23:25] i would consider installing main ubuntu and just use that and add whatever packages you need to it [23:25] if you are not going to be using JACK, it will be arguably overkill to have and use ubuntustudio [23:26] but, you can feel free to ask in here, or on the mailing list, or in one of the other channels i mentioned, or in #xubuntu [23:26] you can take screenshots [23:26] without setting in front of the machine, i cant really tell you what to do [23:26] *if* you have sound from a live CD, then the hardware is working [23:26] you can open a terminal and type into it [23:27] aplay -l [23:27] and hit return [23:27] this will return what sound devices are available [23:27] however, i really feel like its just a simple switch somewhere you are just unfamiliar with [23:30] it could also be the source... if you are not having sound when playing something in youtube for example [23:30] try only playing a local .ogg file, or some system sounds in something like VLC [23:33] g33kgyrl: i need to run out, but if you can try some of those other more broad avenues of support, im sure someone will help you out... or, i will be back about this time tomorrow, or we can schedule a time when you are less distracted, and i am not heading out for a concert :)
