dgroosgood morning!13:57
dgrooshighvoltage: around?13:57
outofhand1hi, i wonder if anyone can assist me ?14:00
outofhand1i have just downloaded edubuntu11.10 onto dvd, and i wanna install in in my ubuntu 11.1014:01
outofhand1i cant get the dvd to install... do i have to install over my ubuntu (restaring my pc, and boot with edubuntu dvd )14:01
outofhand1?14:01
outofhand1is there no way i can just install it (edubuntu ) off the dvd within Ububntu ?14:03
dgrooshi outofhand114:04
dgroosseems that you can do that by setting your sources to use the dvd...14:04
dgroosdo a sudo apt-get update14:05
outofhand1ok? after the apt-get update?14:05
dgroosand it will find the new packages...14:05
dgroosand then sudo apt-get upgrade.14:05
dgroosBUT...14:05
outofhand1dgoos  ,  also. where do i setup the source to dvd only ?>14:06
dgroosWait a few minutes on the list here to see if someone adds to this conversation and improves my answer!14:06
outofhand1ok?14:07
dgroosTo set up sources, wait, you are using Unity?14:07
outofhand1bare with me ... im a noob on Ubuntu... i downloaded and using ubuntu 11.10 new desktop14:08
dgroosIf I were going to update my Ubuntu to Edubuntu, I wouldn't do it from the DVD, but would do it from the internet -- do you have an OK connection to the internet?14:10
outofhand1SA connection sux... 1 Mb14:10
dgroosYou can tell the computer to add the edubuntu stuff from the Ubuntu Software Center--an application that lets you add/remove applications.  Do you know where this is?14:12
dgroosthat is, how to open this application?14:13
outofhand1yeah i got that , thanks for that , what i wanna do is install the edubuntu on new installations of ubuntu pc's  the scenario is . i wanna install ubuntu on peoples pc. but they dont have internet, so i wanna install edubuntu packages from a dvd / cd14:14
dgroosI see.  What you need to do is then what I originally said.  Let's see if I can walk you through it. Is the DVD in the drive?14:16
outofhand1ideas?14:16
outofhand1yes it is14:19
dgroosopen up the system application called something like, software sources14:20
outofhand1ok got it open14:20
dgroosThere are 3 or 4 tabs available.  One of those tabs will have a list of sources where programs can be gotten from.14:21
outofhand1its all ticked14:22
dgroosfind the tab that has this and one of them should show the Edubuntu CD or DVD.14:22
outofhand1its ticked14:22
dgroosincluding the cd/dvd?14:22
dgrooscool.14:22
dgroosIt was that way before? or you just did it now?14:23
outofhand1it was already ticked14:23
dgroosOK, there should be something like an "Update" button, click it.14:23
outofhand1cdform"[edubuntu 11.10_oneiric ocelot]" was ticked ... all i got is .. (add..   or add volume) no upgrade14:24
outofhand1or update14:24
dgroos'k close that and try opening the application, "Update Manager"14:25
dgroosClick on update there and see if that finds the apps on the DVD...14:26
outofhand1let me check14:26
outofhand1no . tells me there is no updates14:27
dgroosHmmm... I've reached the limits of my over the net advise, hopefully someone can build on that.  Be patient as it can take a while for attention on this list. Also I would suggest further google of, "Edubuntu install software from CD"  Good luck.14:31
outofhand1many thanks for your help, hope ur new year is good one14:33
highvoltagehi dgroos15:38
highvoltage(bbl)15:45
dgroos...and back!17:09
dgrooshighvoltage: re-ping!17:09
highvoltagedgroos: repong17:21
alkisgdgroos: do you have the old certificate to check its date?17:32
dgroosin and out... and in!17:35
dgrooshighvoltage: yesterday I was on the edubuntu.org site and looking for a page with an overview on LTSP and found it.17:37
dgroosThen I went looking specifically for info on fat clients as they are significantly different from thin clients both with respect to client/server hardware requirements and for usb support.17:38
dgroosAnd I found that there wasn't phat fat info.17:39
alkisgYeah, that was the problem, that the certificates generated by openssl expire after 1 month by default. I guess we should post a how-to-fix-the-problem in the wiki, and also automatically generate a new certificate on postinst if the old one has expired17:39
dgroosI was envisioning something with thinclient info in 1 column and fat in the next.  Can I help with updating the page?17:42
dgrooshi alkisg :)17:43
alkisgHello17:43
dgroosI tried to do the zero size files in server/client but didn't do the trick.17:43
dgroosI'll check the date right now...17:44
alkisgdgroos: I'd be interested to check your system, to verify that this is indeed the problem - with a shared vnc or socat screen17:45
dgrooshmmmm I tried to check the .crt file and saw no date in it.17:46
dgroosfor sure, that would be great :D17:46
alkisgdgroos: x11vnc -noshm -connect alkisg.dyndns.org17:48
dgroosThanks!17:56
alkisgdgroos: when it's done, reboot a client, and if it doesn't work, ping me17:56
* alkisg left vnc...17:56
dgroosalkisg: Will do.  I won't be able to do this till after this teachers school day which is around 2:20 AM your time.  Probably better put an amplifier on the sound output to wake you ;)17:58
dgroosOr tomorrow later... :)17:58
alkisgOr send me a mail, if you can :)17:58
alkisgIf that fixes it, I should update the wiki pretty soon17:59
alkisgTo notify people that their certificates probably expired around christmas :-/17:59
dgroosperhaps I'll do that (mail) electronically to reduce ping time ;D17:59
alkisgHehe17:59
dgroosFor sure.17:59
dgroosI'll let you know.17:59
dgroosbbsoon...18:00
