However, the term is often used for setups using alternative but different software, such as Perl or Python instead of PHP, and Postgres instead of MySQL. For help with setting up LAMP on Ubuntu, see  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP - See also the Server CD installation process (different in Edgy+)02:09
holsteinSebastien: i would say, look at these... http://www.turnkeylinux.org/lampstack02:09

gener8Hi, today, after a long time of not using Linux I decided to install xubuntu. I however am having issues with the installation ... for some reason, when I select "Install xubuntu" it gives me the loading bar and then, after a long time of waiting I end up on the login screen (I'm thinking this is the demo), there's no setup at all, could someone help me out?10:34
gener8when I look at the log (f1) it starts out with "chroot: can't execute '/usr/lib/user-setup/user-setup-apply': input/output error", I'm not sure what I can do to get it installed ...10:36

Besogongener8, Have you installed xubuntu after all?11:21
gener8nope, creating a bootable usb with xubuntu on it as we speak11:22
gener8I just don't know what the issue is tbh, I just grabbed an official iso, burned it to cd, ran it on my machine and it just didn't want to work :s11:22
gener8so I'm trying the usb now, if that doesn't work I'm going to try i386 (amd64 now)11:23
Besogonhm... I installed xubuntu as a package 'xubuntu-desktop' on my job place. And as pure 'xubutu' at home. At home I have 386 architecture and at job place amd64.11:27
Besogongener8, Did you check md5 of the ISO you had downloaded? It can be a reason of fail installation. I remember such situations. They were here11:28

hobgoblinif you got it from a torrent it should be ok12:14
gener8I am going to try the usb solution in a sec, I remember some issues in the past (not even linux-related) where the OS in which the disk was burned was the source of the issue12:14
gener8(I burned it on Win7)12:14
gener8so hopefully that can be avoided with USB install12:15

csenger41because as soon as I try to do it the emerald quits15:30

ochosiemerald hasn't been maintained for ages15:31
ochosiso if something like that happens there isn't much you can do i'm afraid15:31
csenger41then how can I set the greybird theme in Compiz?15:31
ochosiyou can use the default compiz decorator and use greybird15:31
csenger41how?15:31
ochosiyou have to set a gconf-variable15:31
ochosieither via gconf-editor or maybe there's also a straight command for that15:32
ochosistraight==direct(cli)15:32
mongyochosi, he installed 0.8.8 debs from some site, then I advised compiling 0.9.4 from source, the same as I use without problems, he never removed the older debs before hand, so it's got a little messy I think.15:32
f1assistancewhich is the one Wi-Fi Mini PCI card that works best with Xubuntu?15:32
csenger41now I removed the old version and reinstalled15:33
ochosimongy: possible yeah. but still it's possible that reordering the buttons in a theme doesn't work too well with the emerald theme editor...15:34
csenger41how to set greybird in compiz?15:34
ochosicsenger41: google is your friend, e.g. this turned up when i searched: "change the value of apps > metacity > general > theme gconf key"15:34
mongyochosi, I reorder the one I use, and I also tried the theme he's using and it works fine.15:34
mongyochosi, so i guess it all points back to his install of emerald.15:34
ochosimongy: well still, emerald is unmaintained and always has been a bit too buggy/unstable for my taste :)15:34
ochosimongy: but anyway, yeah, it might also be his installation15:35
ochosiwho knows...15:35
mongycsenger41, are you 32 or 64bit?15:35
ochosicsenger41: or use the command line: "gconftool-2 -- type string --set /apps/metacity/general/theme greybird"15:35
csenger41ochosi: already changed that, now trying to figure out restore original window decorator15:36
csenger4132bit15:36
ochosioops, there is a space too much there in the command line15:36
ochosicsenger41: what do you mean by "original window decorator". xfwm4?15:36
ochosi(if yes, alt+f2 > "xfwm4 --replace")15:36
csenger41if i restore it, compiz is gone15:37
mongycsenger41, to use a metacity window theme with compiz, install compiz-gnome and do 'gtk-window-decorator --replace --metacity-theme=greybird  or whatever theme.15:37
mongyI tried it once with ambiance, just needed the titlebar font adjusting with tweak tool.15:38
csenger_sry internet died15:39
csenger_mongy: ok ill try15:39
mongycsenger41, to use a metacity window theme with compiz, install compiz-gnome and do 'gtk-window-decorator --replace --metacity-theme=greybird  or whatever theme.15:39
ochosii'm off for today15:40
ochosibye15:40
mongycsenger41,  when I get chance I will make a deb for emerald if you like.  just try and remove everything you have for emerald already, even the .emerald folder in your home.15:40

rover10ok I am having some issues with my linux, trying to fix them in recovery with netroot but I can't resolve ubuntu.com, what am I supposed to do now?18:21
rover10(in other words, I am trying to reinstall certain packages but my netroot won't let me because apparently it isn't connected to the net)18:22
holsteinyou could elaborate as to what the main issue is.. maybe some one will have a 'big picture' suggestion18:23
rover10ok so I installed xubuntu again today, but I was trying to make it dual screen, which wasn't working because I was missing ATI drivers (4800 series)18:23
holsteinif this is a recently reinstalled OS, i wouldnt waste too much time 'rescuing' it18:24
rover10so I installed them, then tried accessing them with administrative priviliges, had to change my catalyst file (usr/share/fglrx/amdccclesu.desktop)18:25
rover10then logged out18:25
rover10and bam, GUI was gone after that18:25
holsteinyou should be able to remove whatever drivers you installed, or create a custom xorg.conf with the vesa driver or some other tricks from the recovery console18:25
rover10well I am not an expert in this, first time I had to do such a thing, so it's not easy for me atm18:26
rover10but yeah, working with recovery console, trying to remove the fglrx crap alltogether and starting fresh ... only issue is18:26
rover10whenever I do an apt-get install for a new driver package it says ubuntu.com is unresolved, while I am working on netroot18:27
rover10so I don't really get what's causing that18:27
holsteinyou shouldnt need internet to remove the package18:27
holsteinnor force the vesa driver18:27
rover10well removing the package is done18:28
rover10it's the installing, don't really know how to install the vesa driver though? Maybe that will get me back into the GUI atleast18:28
holsteinrover10: the vesa driver is there18:28
holsteinyou can just make a custom xorg.conf to use it18:28
holsteinyou might be able to run the graphics restore or whatever it is in the recovery area18:29
rover10haven't found anything like it, first time I have to do something like this :p18:30
rover10but I'm readin how I can make it work18:30
holsteinrover10: i have done that before, and literally just reinstalled18:30
holsteinnot that you should do that.. but still, no reason to burn up time about it18:31
rover10nah you're probably right, nothing major was installed yet18:31
rover10oh18:31
holsteinyou might take this time to try some extreme measures to test18:31
rover10my graphics are back!18:31
holsteindont get caught up on the network access18:31
holsteinthat shouldnt matter, and you dont need it18:31
rover10well, it is the default graphics, but I'm back in business atleast :) I'm guessing just cleaning up the ATI stuff was enough to make it fall back on default18:32
rover10Well now that I am at it, what's the best way these days to create an extended dual screen set-up? I was trying to do it through catalyst control center but that kind of failed18:34
holsteinrover10: best is a matter of opinion18:35
holsteini use arandr18:35
rover10still? that's what I used to to 4 years ago18:35
rover10ok, arandr it is, atleast I know how that works18:35
holsteintheres an included tool, but i can only do mirroring with it18:38
holsteinnot to imply "only mirroring can be done with it"18:38
Joshunhi19:00
Joshunis it possible to use thunar to mount usb cameras automatically?19:01
Joshunor can you only do it in external programs like gtkam19:01

Joshunit works under gtkam19:03

holsteinright... on some mp3 players, i saw ways to swith that, to make them show up19:05
csenger41hello everyone19:05
holsteinif you can do that, then the device is not intended to me mounted like that... like a hard drive19:06
holstein^^ if you cant*19:06
Joshun@Unit193 - what packages did you install for that to happen19:06
Joshunor does it do it on a fresh install?19:06
holsteintheres no packages... its just different19:06
csenger41anyone could tell me how are these compiz, gnome, gtk and others things are?19:06
holsteincsenger41: sure.. they are mostly not in xubuntu19:06
csenger41I have some general knowledge, but it's a little bit messed up19:07
Unit193Joshun: Well, not even close to a fresh install, but I either had it already, or installed it already19:07
csenger41go to offtopic?19:07
holsteincsenger41: sure...19:07
Unit193csenger41: Just try a live CD of each one19:07
Joshundid you use gvfs to open it19:08
Joshunor did it do it automatically19:08
holsteinJoshun: if its mountable, it just shows up19:08
holsteinyou can run sudo fdisk -l19:08
holsteini dont even think you'll see it there19:08
Joshunit doesn't show up there19:08
Joshunits not a mass storage device19:08
Joshunits a PTP device19:09
Joshunnautilus opens it19:09
Joshunbut thunar doesnt19:09
holsteininteresting19:09
csenger41holstein: I'm in offtopic19:09
Joshuni can use thunar-volman-settings to set a program to open it with19:10
Unit193Different camera19:10
Joshunbit it doesn't open with thunar itself19:10
holsteinyeah, im not familiar with whats happening with nautilus these days, but i say, use it19:12
holsteinby the time you trick thunar out to be like it, the speed is probably not an issue anymore19:13
Joshuni've found a way to do it manually19:13
Joshunin thunar19:13
Joshunif you do control L19:13
Joshunand then put in19:13
Joshungphoto2://[usb:$CAMPORT]19:13
Joshunwhere usb and camport are ids19:14
holsteincool... maybe you can script that... you are way more of a professional at it than i am19:14
Joshunfor mine i can do19:16
Joshungphoto2://[usb:001,007]/19:16
Joshunbut the id changes every time19:16
Joshunmaybe thunar just doesn't have automatic ptp support19:17
Joshuni'll just use gtkam for now19:17
Joshunthanks anyway though19:17
holsteinid hit the mailing list with that19:18
Joshunyeah i might19:18
joaoHi All. I recently installed Xubuntu 11.10 and I am having trouble synchronizing my Tomboy notes with my Ubuntu One account. I used to use Ubuntu 11.04 and I had no trouble synchronizing my Tomboy notes with Ubuntu one. However, when I got a new computer and started using Xubuntu 11.10, I was unable to retrieve most of my notes from the server to my local hard drive. My Ubuntu One account has all my notes (about 67 of them), but onl20:37
joaoy about 18 find their way to my laptop. I set up the  synchronizing function using the preferences menu and I get a confirmation message that the set-up was successful. However, when I try to have Tomboy synchronize the notes, I get a "Failed to Synchronize" error message. The details window below the message only lists the messages that were successfully synchronized (those 18), nothing else. Does anybody know a workaround? Being a20:37
joaoble to synch is very important for my academic work. Thanks a lot for your time!20:37
holsteinjoao: check out http://askubuntu.com/questions/71733/tomboy-notes-failed-to-synchronize20:40
holsteinmight be a bug, and not XFCE related20:40
TVasEyeson a different note, if it's for academic work have a look at http://www.zotero.org20:44
joaoHi Holstein, thanks for the link, but I followed the user's procedure and it didn't work for me. And you are right, it seems to be affecting everyone, not just xfce users. Do you know if I should direct my question to another channel?20:49
holsteinjoao: thats what im proposing... not sure if im 'right'20:49
holsteini dont use tomboy... im just saying, i see errors *not* relating to XFCE, and its not like its not working for you... its not "syncing"20:50
holsteinwont hurt to ask and search around a bit20:50
joaosure, I'll do that. Thanks for the help. Thanks TVasEyes, I will give Zotero another try - haven't used it in a long time, but it might be just what I need. See you guys!20:57
Marzatais it possible to share a video file via ubuntu one or you need an extra paid account?21:43
holsteinMarzata: i though you could get a link like in dropbox... right click and share a link?21:44
holsteini thought there was a public area last time i looked21:45
Marzatawell, same as I thought but it turned to be not quite like this21:46
holsteinMarzata: http://ubuntuone.com/4Ri7GvVJL7WyAdOoEp2Fwi21:50
holsteinthis is from mine21:50
holsteini havent had it installed in ages... i just logged in to the webUI and clicked "more options" and "published" the file21:50
Marzataholstein: img is ok, video was not that21:52
holstein?21:52
holsteinzip it up then21:52
holsteinname it whatever.whatever21:52
Marzataholstein: that might be a way21:52
holsteini would expect the other person to download it21:52
holsteinnot just play in the browser necessarily21:52
Marzataholstein: you never know what the other side is doing21:53
holsteinMarzata: right.. tell them21:54
holsteinor use dropbox21:54
holsteini wouldnt expect to "host" files like we can in dropbox21:54
rlmccormickHi all. I can;t seem to find a link for a 64 bit xubuntu other than the one for amd processors.  For intel is it the i386 download?22:21
vinnyits the same as  amd22:22
rlmccormickoh ok22:23
vinnyunless  you have  IA64  it maybe be different22:23
mongyrlmccormick, i386 is 32bit an amd64 is 64bit22:23
rlmccormicki guess i got confused by the name and thought amd64 must be for amd processors only22:23
rlmccormickthx22:24
mongyrlmccormick, I believe it's down to amd being the first to make 64bit, or something22:24
mongyrlmccormick, I agree, it should be changed22:24
rlmccormickthanks for the info22:25
rlmccormickis there any reason i shouldn't use the 64 bit version?22:26
rlmccormicki have >4GB of RAM22:27
mongyI have crunchbang, ubuntu and xubuntu torrents serving, and crunchbang and xubuntu are always active.. :)22:27
mongyrlmccormick, 64bit is only benefical for more than 3.3gb ram22:27
mongyeven then, i386 with a pae kernel can see more than 4gb. (is it 8 or 16gb)22:28
mongyrlmccormick, if you cpu supports it, go with it.22:28
rlmccormicki just installed the 32bit version and it seems to think i have less than 4GB of ram22:29
rlmccormickusing free -m22:29
mongyrlmccormick, you need the pae kernel then.22:29
mongyapt-get install linux-headers-3.0.0-14-generic-pae linux-image-3.0.0-14-generic-pae22:30
rlmccormickkk, at the moment it looks like the kernel is being downloading but it is not the pae version22:30
mongylinux-generic-pae  then22:32
rlmccormicki'll do that after this update is done,  the update is coming down extremely slow for some reason22:32
mongyshould work either way22:33
rlmccormickah ok, so the update just queues up?22:34
mongyis it too much trouble to install fresh amd64?22:34
rlmccormickit's not too much trouble.  i just finished with the 32 bit version so i have no data on this machine yet22:34
mongyI say go 6422:35
rlmccormicki'm actually downloading the 64 bit version now to burn it to a CD so i can install it22:35
vinny64 64 64 64!22:35
knomehmm, calm down lads22:35
rlmccormicki just built this machine last night, finally getting around to getting the OS on it22:35
rlmccormickis there any chance that the 64 bit version has less hardware compatibility? Are the drivers the same for both 32 bit and 64 bit?22:37
knomesame hw compatibility22:37
mongy64bot used to be a slight problem, but only for certain apps.  You are good to go now22:38
mongybit*22:38
knomeused, like 4 years ago... :)22:38
rlmccormicklol well it's been a while so i guess i have old memories of 64 bit issues22:39
mongyused, as in the past :)22:39
timhurdHi guys, I have an issue with video playback in Xubuntu 11.10, hopefully someone could help me out23:47
