gener8 | Hi, today, after a long time of not using Linux I decided to install xubuntu. I however am having issues with the installation ... for some reason, when I select "Install xubuntu" it gives me the loading bar and then, after a long time of waiting I end up on the login screen (I'm thinking this is the demo), there's no setup at all, could someone help me out? | 10:34 |
gener8 | when I look at the log (f1) it starts out with "chroot: can't execute '/usr/lib/user-setup/user-setup-apply': input/output error", I'm not sure what I can do to get it installed ... | 10:36 |

Besogon | gener8, Have you installed xubuntu after all? | 11:21 |
gener8 | nope, creating a bootable usb with xubuntu on it as we speak | 11:22 |
gener8 | I just don't know what the issue is tbh, I just grabbed an official iso, burned it to cd, ran it on my machine and it just didn't want to work :s | 11:22 |
gener8 | so I'm trying the usb now, if that doesn't work I'm going to try i386 (amd64 now) | 11:23 |
Besogon | hm... I installed xubuntu as a package 'xubuntu-desktop' on my job place. And as pure 'xubutu' at home. At home I have 386 architecture and at job place amd64. | 11:27 |

GridCube | csenger41, :) ochosi here is the one who made greybird, he might be able to help you | 15:28 |
ochosi | so what's the problem exactly? | 15:29 |
csenger41 | I installed Compiz and Emerald on Xubuntu 11.10 | 15:29 |
csenger41 | and can't set the window button order in Emerald Theme Manager | 15:30 |
csenger41 | because as soon as I try to do it the emerald quits | 15:30 |
ochosi | csenger41: well, i can't help you with that | 15:31 |
ochosi | emerald hasn't been maintained for ages | 15:31 |
ochosi | so if something like that happens there isn't much you can do i'm afraid | 15:31 |
csenger41 | then how can I set the greybird theme in Compiz? | 15:31 |
ochosi | you can use the default compiz decorator and use greybird | 15:31 |
csenger41 | how? | 15:31 |
ochosi | you have to set a gconf-variable | 15:31 |
ochosi | either via gconf-editor or maybe there's also a straight command for that | 15:32 |
ochosi | straight==direct(cli) | 15:32 |
mongy | ochosi, he installed 0.8.8 debs from some site, then I advised compiling 0.9.4 from source, the same as I use without problems, he never removed the older debs before hand, so it's got a little messy I think. | 15:32 |
f1assistance | which is the one Wi-Fi Mini PCI card that works best with Xubuntu? | 15:32 |
csenger41 | now I removed the old version and reinstalled | 15:33 |
ochosi | mongy: possible yeah. but still it's possible that reordering the buttons in a theme doesn't work too well with the emerald theme editor... | 15:34 |
csenger41 | how to set greybird in compiz? | 15:34 |
ochosi | csenger41: google is your friend, e.g. this turned up when i searched: "change the value of apps > metacity > general > theme gconf key" | 15:34 |
mongy | ochosi, I reorder the one I use, and I also tried the theme he's using and it works fine. | 15:34 |
mongy | ochosi, so i guess it all points back to his install of emerald. | 15:34 |
ochosi | mongy: well still, emerald is unmaintained and always has been a bit too buggy/unstable for my taste :) | 15:34 |
ochosi | mongy: but anyway, yeah, it might also be his installation | 15:35 |
ochosi | who knows... | 15:35 |
mongy | csenger41, are you 32 or 64bit? | 15:35 |
ochosi | csenger41: or use the command line: "gconftool-2 -- type string --set /apps/metacity/general/theme greybird" | 15:35 |
csenger41 | ochosi: already changed that, now trying to figure out restore original window decorator | 15:36 |
csenger41 | 32bit | 15:36 |
ochosi | oops, there is a space too much there in the command line | 15:36 |
ochosi | csenger41: what do you mean by "original window decorator". xfwm4? | 15:36 |
ochosi | (if yes, alt+f2 > "xfwm4 --replace") | 15:36 |
csenger41 | if i restore it, compiz is gone | 15:37 |
mongy | csenger41, to use a metacity window theme with compiz, install compiz-gnome and do 'gtk-window-decorator --replace --metacity-theme=greybird or whatever theme. | 15:37 |
mongy | I tried it once with ambiance, just needed the titlebar font adjusting with tweak tool. | 15:38 |
csenger_ | sry internet died | 15:39 |
csenger_ | mongy: ok ill try | 15:39 |
mongy | csenger41, to use a metacity window theme with compiz, install compiz-gnome and do 'gtk-window-decorator --replace --metacity-theme=greybird or whatever theme. | 15:39 |
ochosi | i'm off for today | 15:40 |
ochosi | bye | 15:40 |
mongy | csenger41, when I get chance I will make a deb for emerald if you like. just try and remove everything you have for emerald already, even the .emerald folder in your home. | 15:40 |

rover10 | (in other words, I am trying to reinstall certain packages but my netroot won't let me because apparently it isn't connected to the net) | 18:22 |
holstein | you could elaborate as to what the main issue is.. maybe some one will have a 'big picture' suggestion | 18:23 |
rover10 | ok so I installed xubuntu again today, but I was trying to make it dual screen, which wasn't working because I was missing ATI drivers (4800 series) | 18:23 |
holstein | if this is a recently reinstalled OS, i wouldnt waste too much time 'rescuing' it | 18:24 |
rover10 | so I installed them, then tried accessing them with administrative priviliges, had to change my catalyst file (usr/share/fglrx/amdccclesu.desktop) | 18:25 |
rover10 | then logged out | 18:25 |
rover10 | and bam, GUI was gone after that | 18:25 |
holstein | you should be able to remove whatever drivers you installed, or create a custom xorg.conf with the vesa driver or some other tricks from the recovery console | 18:25 |
rover10 | well I am not an expert in this, first time I had to do such a thing, so it's not easy for me atm | 18:26 |
rover10 | but yeah, working with recovery console, trying to remove the fglrx crap alltogether and starting fresh ... only issue is | 18:26 |
rover10 | whenever I do an apt-get install for a new driver package it says ubuntu.com is unresolved, while I am working on netroot | 18:27 |
rover10 | so I don't really get what's causing that | 18:27 |
holstein | you shouldnt need internet to remove the package | 18:27 |
holstein | nor force the vesa driver | 18:27 |
rover10 | well removing the package is done | 18:28 |
rover10 | it's the installing, don't really know how to install the vesa driver though? Maybe that will get me back into the GUI atleast | 18:28 |
holstein | rover10: the vesa driver is there | 18:28 |
holstein | you can just make a custom xorg.conf to use it | 18:28 |
holstein | you might be able to run the graphics restore or whatever it is in the recovery area | 18:29 |
rover10 | haven't found anything like it, first time I have to do something like this :p | 18:30 |
rover10 | but I'm readin how I can make it work | 18:30 |
holstein | rover10: i have done that before, and literally just reinstalled | 18:30 |
holstein | not that you should do that.. but still, no reason to burn up time about it | 18:31 |
rover10 | nah you're probably right, nothing major was installed yet | 18:31 |
rover10 | oh | 18:31 |
holstein | you might take this time to try some extreme measures to test | 18:31 |
rover10 | my graphics are back! | 18:31 |
holstein | dont get caught up on the network access | 18:31 |
holstein | that shouldnt matter, and you dont need it | 18:31 |
rover10 | well, it is the default graphics, but I'm back in business atleast :) I'm guessing just cleaning up the ATI stuff was enough to make it fall back on default | 18:32 |
rover10 | Well now that I am at it, what's the best way these days to create an extended dual screen set-up? I was trying to do it through catalyst control center but that kind of failed | 18:34 |
holstein | rover10: best is a matter of opinion | 18:35 |
holstein | i use arandr | 18:35 |
rover10 | still? that's what I used to to 4 years ago | 18:35 |
rover10 | ok, arandr it is, atleast I know how that works | 18:35 |
holstein | theres an included tool, but i can only do mirroring with it | 18:38 |
holstein | not to imply "only mirroring can be done with it" | 18:38 |
Joshun | hi | 19:00 |
Joshun | is it possible to use thunar to mount usb cameras automatically? | 19:01 |
Joshun | or can you only do it in external programs like gtkam | 19:01 |
holstein | im not sure about that... i think it depends on how the device works.. if it shows up as a hard drive or if you have to 'extract' the information | 19:02 |
Joshun | its a USB PTP camera | 19:03 |
Joshun | it works under gtkam | 19:03 |
Joshun | or gphoto2 | 19:03 |
holstein | Joshun: right... im not going to know what that is.. all i can relate it to is an mp3 player.. some show up as hard drives, some dont exactly work that way | 19:03 |
holstein | you have to "sync" them | 19:04 |
Joshun | is it possible to get thunar to open it when it is plugged in | 19:04 |
holstein | cool | 19:04 |
holstein | you just dont want to click on it? to mount it? | 19:04 |
Joshun | it doesn't appear like a normal drive | 19:04 |
Joshun | it isn't even shown | 19:05 |
Joshun | gvfs is installed and everything | 19:05 |
holstein | Joshun: OH.. i mis-read | 19:05 |
holstein | it *doesnt* show up | 19:05 |
Unit193 | When I plug in the camera, thunar pops open at the camers mount point | 19:05 |
holstein | right... on some mp3 players, i saw ways to swith that, to make them show up | 19:05 |
csenger41 | hello everyone | 19:05 |
holstein | if you can do that, then the device is not intended to me mounted like that... like a hard drive | 19:06 |
holstein | ^^ if you cant* | 19:06 |
Joshun | @Unit193 - what packages did you install for that to happen | 19:06 |
Joshun | or does it do it on a fresh install? | 19:06 |
holstein | theres no packages... its just different | 19:06 |
csenger41 | anyone could tell me how are these compiz, gnome, gtk and others things are? | 19:06 |
holstein | csenger41: sure.. they are mostly not in xubuntu | 19:06 |
csenger41 | I have some general knowledge, but it's a little bit messed up | 19:07 |
Unit193 | Joshun: Well, not even close to a fresh install, but I either had it already, or installed it already | 19:07 |
csenger41 | go to offtopic? | 19:07 |
holstein | csenger41: sure... | 19:07 |
Unit193 | csenger41: Just try a live CD of each one | 19:07 |
Joshun | did you use gvfs to open it | 19:08 |
Joshun | or did it do it automatically | 19:08 |
holstein | Joshun: if its mountable, it just shows up | 19:08 |
holstein | you can run sudo fdisk -l | 19:08 |
holstein | i dont even think you'll see it there | 19:08 |
Joshun | it doesn't show up there | 19:08 |
Joshun | its not a mass storage device | 19:08 |
Joshun | its a PTP device | 19:09 |
Joshun | nautilus opens it | 19:09 |
Joshun | but thunar doesnt | 19:09 |
holstein | interesting | 19:09 |
csenger41 | holstein: I'm in offtopic | 19:09 |
Joshun | i can use thunar-volman-settings to set a program to open it with | 19:10 |
Unit193 | Different camera | 19:10 |
Joshun | bit it doesn't open with thunar itself | 19:10 |
holstein | yeah, im not familiar with whats happening with nautilus these days, but i say, use it | 19:12 |
holstein | by the time you trick thunar out to be like it, the speed is probably not an issue anymore | 19:13 |
Joshun | i've found a way to do it manually | 19:13 |
Joshun | in thunar | 19:13 |
Joshun | if you do control L | 19:13 |
Joshun | and then put in | 19:13 |
Joshun | gphoto2://[usb:$CAMPORT] | 19:13 |
Joshun | where usb and camport are ids | 19:14 |
holstein | cool... maybe you can script that... you are way more of a professional at it than i am | 19:14 |
Joshun | for mine i can do | 19:16 |
Joshun | gphoto2://[usb:001,007]/ | 19:16 |
Joshun | but the id changes every time | 19:16 |
Joshun | maybe thunar just doesn't have automatic ptp support | 19:17 |
Joshun | i'll just use gtkam for now | 19:17 |
Joshun | thanks anyway though | 19:17 |
holstein | id hit the mailing list with that | 19:18 |
Joshun | yeah i might | 19:18 |
joao | Hi All. I recently installed Xubuntu 11.10 and I am having trouble synchronizing my Tomboy notes with my Ubuntu One account. I used to use Ubuntu 11.04 and I had no trouble synchronizing my Tomboy notes with Ubuntu one. However, when I got a new computer and started using Xubuntu 11.10, I was unable to retrieve most of my notes from the server to my local hard drive. My Ubuntu One account has all my notes (about 67 of them), but onl | 20:37 |
joao | y about 18 find their way to my laptop. I set up the synchronizing function using the preferences menu and I get a confirmation message that the set-up was successful. However, when I try to have Tomboy synchronize the notes, I get a "Failed to Synchronize" error message. The details window below the message only lists the messages that were successfully synchronized (those 18), nothing else. Does anybody know a workaround? Being a | 20:37 |
joao | ble to synch is very important for my academic work. Thanks a lot for your time! | 20:37 |
holstein | joao: check out http://askubuntu.com/questions/71733/tomboy-notes-failed-to-synchronize | 20:40 |
holstein | might be a bug, and not XFCE related | 20:40 |
TVasEyes | on a different note, if it's for academic work have a look at http://www.zotero.org | 20:44 |
joao | Hi Holstein, thanks for the link, but I followed the user's procedure and it didn't work for me. And you are right, it seems to be affecting everyone, not just xfce users. Do you know if I should direct my question to another channel? | 20:49 |
holstein | joao: thats what im proposing... not sure if im 'right' | 20:49 |
holstein | i dont use tomboy... im just saying, i see errors *not* relating to XFCE, and its not like its not working for you... its not "syncing" | 20:50 |
holstein | wont hurt to ask and search around a bit | 20:50 |
joao | sure, I'll do that. Thanks for the help. Thanks TVasEyes, I will give Zotero another try - haven't used it in a long time, but it might be just what I need. See you guys! | 20:57 |
Marzata | is it possible to share a video file via ubuntu one or you need an extra paid account? | 21:43 |
holstein | Marzata: i though you could get a link like in dropbox... right click and share a link? | 21:44 |
holstein | i thought there was a public area last time i looked | 21:45 |
Marzata | well, same as I thought but it turned to be not quite like this | 21:46 |
holstein | Marzata: http://ubuntuone.com/4Ri7GvVJL7WyAdOoEp2Fwi | 21:50 |
holstein | this is from mine | 21:50 |
holstein | i havent had it installed in ages... i just logged in to the webUI and clicked "more options" and "published" the file | 21:50 |
Marzata | holstein: img is ok, video was not that | 21:52 |
holstein | ? | 21:52 |
holstein | zip it up then | 21:52 |
holstein | name it whatever.whatever | 21:52 |
Marzata | holstein: that might be a way | 21:52 |
holstein | i would expect the other person to download it | 21:52 |
holstein | not just play in the browser necessarily | 21:52 |
Marzata | holstein: you never know what the other side is doing | 21:53 |
holstein | Marzata: right.. tell them | 21:54 |
holstein | or use dropbox | 21:54 |
holstein | i wouldnt expect to "host" files like we can in dropbox | 21:54 |
rlmccormick | Hi all. I can;t seem to find a link for a 64 bit xubuntu other than the one for amd processors. For intel is it the i386 download? | 22:21 |
vinny | its the same as amd | 22:22 |
rlmccormick | oh ok | 22:23 |
vinny | unless you have IA64 it maybe be different | 22:23 |
mongy | rlmccormick, i386 is 32bit an amd64 is 64bit | 22:23 |
rlmccormick | i guess i got confused by the name and thought amd64 must be for amd processors only | 22:23 |
rlmccormick | thx | 22:24 |
mongy | rlmccormick, I believe it's down to amd being the first to make 64bit, or something | 22:24 |
mongy | rlmccormick, I agree, it should be changed | 22:24 |
rlmccormick | thanks for the info | 22:25 |
rlmccormick | is there any reason i shouldn't use the 64 bit version? | 22:26 |
rlmccormick | i have >4GB of RAM | 22:27 |
mongy | I have crunchbang, ubuntu and xubuntu torrents serving, and crunchbang and xubuntu are always active.. :) | 22:27 |
mongy | rlmccormick, 64bit is only benefical for more than 3.3gb ram | 22:27 |
mongy | even then, i386 with a pae kernel can see more than 4gb. (is it 8 or 16gb) | 22:28 |
mongy | rlmccormick, if you cpu supports it, go with it. | 22:28 |
rlmccormick | i just installed the 32bit version and it seems to think i have less than 4GB of ram | 22:29 |
rlmccormick | using free -m | 22:29 |
mongy | rlmccormick, you need the pae kernel then. | 22:29 |
mongy | apt-get install linux-headers-3.0.0-14-generic-pae linux-image-3.0.0-14-generic-pae | 22:30 |
rlmccormick | kk, at the moment it looks like the kernel is being downloading but it is not the pae version | 22:30 |
mongy | linux-generic-pae then | 22:32 |
rlmccormick | i'll do that after this update is done, the update is coming down extremely slow for some reason | 22:32 |
mongy | should work either way | 22:33 |
rlmccormick | ah ok, so the update just queues up? | 22:34 |
mongy | is it too much trouble to install fresh amd64? | 22:34 |
rlmccormick | it's not too much trouble. i just finished with the 32 bit version so i have no data on this machine yet | 22:34 |
mongy | I say go 64 | 22:35 |
rlmccormick | i'm actually downloading the 64 bit version now to burn it to a CD so i can install it | 22:35 |
vinny | 64 64 64 64! | 22:35 |
knome | hmm, calm down lads | 22:35 |
rlmccormick | i just built this machine last night, finally getting around to getting the OS on it | 22:35 |
rlmccormick | is there any chance that the 64 bit version has less hardware compatibility? Are the drivers the same for both 32 bit and 64 bit? | 22:37 |
knome | same hw compatibility | 22:37 |
mongy | 64bot used to be a slight problem, but only for certain apps. You are good to go now | 22:38 |
mongy | bit* | 22:38 |
knome | used, like 4 years ago... :) | 22:38 |
rlmccormick | lol well it's been a while so i guess i have old memories of 64 bit issues | 22:39 |
mongy | used, as in the past :) | 22:39 |
timhurd | Hi guys, I have an issue with video playback in Xubuntu 11.10, hopefully someone could help me out | 23:47 |
