Budget | I just installed 11.10 and I was wondering if anyone knows how to make it look more like the older version? | 02:51 |
---|---|---|
holstein | Budget: you mean, gnome2? | 02:51 |
holstein | i say XFCE is the most gnome2 like.. you can try xubuntu... i would look at it live and see if you agree... if you agree, or just want to go for it, you can install XFCE, or xubuntu-desktop | 02:52 |
Budget | Yes | 02:52 |
Budget | holstein: Yes | 02:52 |
Budget | holstein: That looks about right, thanks | 02:54 |

Nikku | Hi, does anyone know how to use pLop to install Ubuntu from a USB on a computer that can boot from BIOS or DVD/CD? | 06:29 |
Nikku | I've followed all available instructions. I've reached a purple splash page that says Ubuntu | 06:30 |
Nikku | How long does it normally take to install Ubuntu from a USB? | 06:32 |
Unit193 | All depends on your computer speed | 06:35 |
nlsthzn | Before I wipe my wifes Win 7 install and do a re-install anyone know of a way to reset the password (she changed it and can't remember it now)? | 09:52 |
Snicksie | yep | 09:54 |
Snicksie | I know | 09:54 |
Snicksie | you have an ubuntu live cd? | 09:54 |
Snicksie | chntpw is the package you need to install :) | 09:54 |
Snicksie | http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/chntpw | 09:55 |
nlsthzn | Snicksie, I do have a live CD... can Ubuntu change a Windows 7 password though? | 09:55 |
Snicksie | at least that's the package i mean | 09:55 |
Snicksie | yep | 09:55 |
Snicksie | well, I just erased it, the change didnt work for me | 09:55 |
Snicksie | erasing worked though | 09:56 |
nlsthzn | Snicksie, awesome... having a look at it now :D | 09:57 |
Snicksie | good luck, it worked for me :) | 09:57 |
nlsthzn | Booting up in Oneiric now... looks like it will do the trick ... | 10:07 |
Snicksie | good luck nlsthzn ;) | 10:16 |
Ianp5a | nlsthzn: yes good luck. keep us posted. | 10:17 |
nlsthzn | Curious... laptop has failed to boot both my Ubuntu and Kubuntu discs starting Windows after a minute or two every time... time to go play in the BIOS as the boot manager doesn't seem to be working :/ | 10:20 |
Ianp5a | Try a USB sticl boot if that doesn't work | 10:22 |
nlsthzn | Tried my external USB DVD and it doesn't pick it up... this sucks :/ I have installed many distro's on this machine before... I guess it is time to find that USB as you mentioned Ianp5a | 10:28 |
* nlsthzn starts downloading the ISO again :;p | 10:31 | |
nlsthzn | Was able to boot from USB... so far so good :) | 11:05 |
nlsthzn | ? well the first clearing of the password didn't work... lets try again.. | 11:22 |
Snicksie | nlsthzn, did you save the things you did? | 11:33 |
Snicksie | i read it doesnt by default | 11:33 |
nlsthzn | it asks to write the "hive" and I wrote "y" and entered... checking again :) | 11:34 |
Snicksie | okay... I know it didnt work always too... but after few try's it worked | 11:36 |
nlsthzn | Even tried changing the password... no luck. | 11:41 |
nlsthzn | Snicksie, thanks for the assistance... I will just backup the files and do a fresh install, sometimes Windows needs that too :) | 11:41 |
Snicksie | okay, good luck ;) | 11:46 |

davidl_ | Hi there... looking for a little hep with rsyslog. (mine config doesn't seem to be working... log files are not updating). I have a vanilla 11.10 Server AMD64 install. I've done an apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, apt-get install octopussy (which is a web based log analyzer). Not getting any log data and it looks like rsyslog isn't working. Suggestions? TIA. | 18:41 |
davidl_ | (asking the same questions on #ubuntu-server | 18:46 |
davidl_ | ) | 18:46 |
holstein | davidl_: other than just assuming octopussy isnt configured correctly, i dont really have any suggestions | 19:11 |
davidl_ | holstein: I just wiped the box... trying 10.04 Server. Going to see if I get the same result. Definitely seems like rsyslog is what is broken. | 19:26 |
holstein | i use 10.04 server... 64bit | 19:27 |
davidl_ | what do you use for syslog? | 19:27 |
davidl_ | I suppose I could try and make syslog-ng work with octopussy | 19:28 |
davidl_ | this is all really a stab in the dark. I'm trying to build a box for log analysis (w/out spending a fortune) | 19:29 |
holstein | davidl_: i just look when i need info.. where ever i need to look | 19:29 |
holstein | i can fire it up and through something at it it you like | 19:29 |
davidl_ | interesting.... I have a wireless controller that can forward logs to a syslog daemon. It can only hold a small amount of logging data on its own. And I need to be able track more historical data | 19:31 |
holstein | they sell something http://www.canonical.com/enterprise-services/ubuntu-advantage/landscape | 19:33 |
holstein | the meaning cannonical... or at least they used to | 19:33 |
holstein | i like to check these guys out as well http://www.turnkeylinux.org/ | 19:33 |
davidl_ | neat... I'll take a look | 19:34 |
davidl_ | p.s.... thanks for the advice. =) | 19:35 |
davidl_ | holstein: just installed 10.04 Server... and just found that octopussy is not an available package. Surprised by that... because it is available for 11.10 | 19:53 |
philipballew | davidl_, must have been added | 19:55 |
holstein | i thought you had added it to 11.10 | 19:57 |
davidl_ | ? | 20:02 |
davidl_ | It was an available package for 11.10. But I couldn't get it to work. | 20:03 |
davidl_ | holstein: just noticed you posted (I assume its you) 1.11.2012 on sourceforge that you have v1.0-4 running | 20:04 |
holstein | davidl_: what im saying is.... i didnt realize it was in the repos at all... it got added looks like | 20:04 |
holstein | davidl_: nah... i have not used octopussy | 20:04 |
holstein | i have not used server 11.10 | 20:05 |
davidl_ | holstein: http://sourceforge.net/projects/syslog-analyzer/forums/forum/629149/topic/4939478?message=11040239 | 20:07 |
davidl_ | ohhh... I see its hollstein | 20:07 |
davidl_ | funny | 20:07 |
davidl_ | I looked briefly at the landscape product. It looks like its used primarily to manage ubuntu systems. Its also a syslog analyzer? | 20:11 |
holstein | davidl_: im not sure... is a server log... a proprietary thing | 20:13 |
holstein | i would start with... what do you want? and why? and how would you like it? | 20:13 |
holstein | would you like the system to email you? | 20:14 |
holstein | would you like to just see a log of activity? | 20:14 |
davidl_ | I would like to see a log of activity from multiple devices, with filters for several different types of events. Thresholds that trigger email or pager notification | 20:15 |
davidl_ | I know that our wireless controller, core switch and core router can forward all their logs to a syslog server | 20:15 |
davidl_ | so I want to setup a syslog server that in turn has some analysis tools that make it easy to monitor the log files | 20:16 |
davidl_ | I did find this list: http://www.syslog.org/wiki/Main/LogAnalyzers | 20:17 |
davidl_ | but there are only a couple that are free | 20:18 |
davidl_ | Octopussy will generate email and/or jabber notifications. | 20:19 |
holstein | http://www.turnkeylinux.org/forum/general/20110616/syslog-server-appliance-request-features-rff | 20:21 |
holstein | i tend to try several options and go with the path of least resistance | 20:21 |
davidl_ | yeah... that's what I want to do... | 20:23 |
holstein | i have only heard of splunk | 20:23 |
davidl_ | yeah... Someone told me about that too... but I don't think they have a free version | 20:26 |
davidl_ | turnkeylink had a link to this: http://czanik.blogs.balabit.com/2011/06/a-comparison-of-syslog-ng-web-guis/ | 20:26 |
holstein | what you are trying to do might be worth paying for | 20:26 |
holstein | im sure its not trivial | 20:26 |
davidl_ | yeah... | 20:26 |
davidl_ | true | 20:26 |
holstein | not that you cant do it... its just probably a lot of config, and points of failure to troubleshoot | 20:26 |
holstein | unless you just find an appliance for it | 20:27 |
