BudgetI just installed 11.10 and I was wondering if anyone knows how to make it look more like the older version?02:51
holsteinBudget: you mean, gnome2?02:51
holsteini say XFCE is the most gnome2 like.. you can try xubuntu... i would look at it live and see if you agree... if you agree, or just want to go for it, you can install XFCE, or xubuntu-desktop02:52
BudgetYes02:52
Budgetholstein: Yes02:52
Budgetholstein: That looks about right, thanks02:54
hydrox24How can I start an application in minimized mode?05:28
NikkuHi, does anyone know how to use pLop to install Ubuntu from a USB on a computer that can boot from BIOS or DVD/CD?06:29
NikkuI've followed all available instructions. I've reached a purple splash page that says Ubuntu06:30
NikkuHow long does it normally take to install Ubuntu from a USB?06:32
Unit193All depends on your computer speed06:35
nlsthznBefore I wipe my wifes Win 7 install and do a re-install anyone know of a way to reset the password (she changed it and can't remember it now)?09:52

nlsthznEven tried changing the password... no luck.11:41
nlsthznSnicksie, thanks for the assistance... I will just backup the files and do a fresh install, sometimes Windows needs that too :)11:41

davidl_Hi there...  looking for a little hep with rsyslog. (mine config doesn't seem to be working... log files are not updating).  I have a vanilla 11.10 Server AMD64 install.  I've done an apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, apt-get install octopussy (which is a web based log analyzer).  Not getting any log data and it looks like rsyslog isn't working.  Suggestions?  TIA.18:41
davidl_(asking the same questions on #ubuntu-server18:46
davidl_)18:46
holsteindavidl_: other than just assuming octopussy isnt configured correctly, i dont really have any suggestions19:11
davidl_holstein: I just wiped the box... trying 10.04 Server.   Going to see if I get the same result.  Definitely seems like rsyslog is what is broken.19:26
holsteini use 10.04 server... 64bit19:27
davidl_what do you use for syslog?19:27
davidl_I suppose I could try and make syslog-ng work with octopussy19:28
davidl_this is all really a stab in the dark.  I'm trying to build a box for log analysis (w/out spending a fortune)19:29
holsteindavidl_: i just look when i need info.. where ever i need to look19:29
holsteini can fire it up and through something at it it you like19:29
davidl_interesting.... I have a wireless controller that can forward logs to a syslog daemon.  It can only hold a small amount of logging data on its own.  And I need to be able track more historical data19:31
holsteinthey sell something http://www.canonical.com/enterprise-services/ubuntu-advantage/landscape19:33
holsteinthe meaning cannonical... or at least they used to19:33
holsteini like to check these guys out as well http://www.turnkeylinux.org/19:33
davidl_neat... I'll take a look19:34
davidl_p.s.... thanks for the advice.  =)19:35
davidl_holstein: just installed 10.04 Server... and just found that octopussy is not an available package. Surprised by that... because it is available for 11.1019:53
philipballewdavidl_, must have been added19:55
holsteini thought you had added it to 11.1019:57
davidl_?20:02
davidl_It was an available package for 11.10.  But I couldn't get it to work.20:03
davidl_holstein:  just noticed you posted (I assume its you) 1.11.2012 on sourceforge that you have v1.0-4  running20:04
holsteindavidl_: what im saying is.... i didnt realize it was in the repos at all... it got added looks like20:04
holsteindavidl_: nah... i have not used octopussy20:04
holsteini have not used server 11.1020:05
davidl_holstein: http://sourceforge.net/projects/syslog-analyzer/forums/forum/629149/topic/4939478?message=1104023920:07
davidl_ohhh... I see its hollstein20:07
davidl_funny20:07
davidl_I looked briefly at the landscape product.  It looks like its used primarily to manage ubuntu systems.    Its also a syslog analyzer?20:11
holsteindavidl_: im not sure... is a server log... a proprietary thing20:13
holsteini would start with... what do you want? and why? and how would you like it?20:13
holsteinwould you like the system to email you?20:14
holsteinwould you like to just see a log of activity?20:14
davidl_I would like to see a log of activity from multiple devices, with filters for several different types of events.  Thresholds that trigger email or pager notification20:15
davidl_I know that our wireless controller, core switch and core router can forward all their logs to a syslog server20:15
davidl_so I want to setup a syslog server that in turn has some analysis tools that make it easy to monitor the log files20:16
davidl_I did find this list: http://www.syslog.org/wiki/Main/LogAnalyzers20:17
davidl_but there are only a couple that are free20:18
davidl_Octopussy will generate email and/or jabber notifications.20:19
holsteinhttp://www.turnkeylinux.org/forum/general/20110616/syslog-server-appliance-request-features-rff20:21
holsteini tend to try several options and go with the path of least resistance20:21
davidl_yeah... that's what I want to do...20:23
holsteini have only heard of splunk20:23
davidl_yeah... Someone told me about that too... but I don't think they have a free version20:26
davidl_turnkeylink had a link to this: http://czanik.blogs.balabit.com/2011/06/a-comparison-of-syslog-ng-web-guis/20:26
holsteinwhat you are trying to do might be worth paying for20:26
holsteinim sure its not trivial20:26
davidl_yeah...20:26
davidl_true20:26
holsteinnot that you cant do it... its just probably a lot of config, and points of failure to troubleshoot20:26
holsteinunless you just find an appliance for it20:27
