AlanBellI thought it was a person to person protocol13:10

popeyyou can have rooms13:12
AlanBellI think I set up a server once and had a look at the protocol, can't say I have ever used it with another person13:14

Neotiso my video editing woes continu!!13:26
AlanBellinteresting, and that has existed for some time13:26
Neotion ubuntu 10.10 kinda works ok with some problems and ogv is a no go... better to use avi if screen capturing etc....13:27
AlanBellanyone running a jabberd server? I can't be bothered to set one up just to look at it13:27
AlanBelland google talk is only in the USA right?13:27
Neotithough i can not get kazam working in ubuntu 10.10 just does not load!13:27
AlanBellI have a feeling most jabber users don't approach it by reading the protocol specifications first. I am going about this the wrong way I think.13:28
Neotiok FFMPEG might be the root problem...13:34
Neotior unity ... checking now13:34
gord10.10, wow13:36
gordis that still supported?13:36
AlanBell!10.1013:36
lubotu3Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) was the thirteenth release of Ubuntu. Download http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.10/ - Release Info: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/101013:36
gorddoesn't tell me :(13:36
AlanBellit doesn't, I thought most of those did13:37
NeotiAlanBell gord can you recommend a good screen capture program that will output to avi as recordmydesktop only does ogv and the file format is rubish not the program its self...13:38
AlanBellI think it is supported to 12.10, 2 years13:38
AlanBellyou can upload .ogv to blip.tv and youtube if youtube is having a good day13:39
AlanBellthough most of the time you upload for an hour to youtube and get just a green screen13:39
Neotii want to edit the video cut bits out add titles etc... and i have proved in my mind that ogv is crap! however the videos i have done in avi on windows, when putting them through kdenlive work fine... well on ubuntu 10.10 as i think either ffmpeg or unity is messing up the video out put in the clip monitor in kdenlive on 11.10.....13:40
AlanBellhmm, not sure then. I use openshot to edit stuff and it handles ogv fine and can export in various formats13:41
Neotihumm i will have to try that out ...13:45
Neotiseems similar to kdenlive13:45
Neotimy requirments for what i do are just ability to add titles, fade in and out, cut a section of video out and delete that section and out put in 1280x720 600k 15FPS mp4 for youtube etc... if it can do that and is easy to use gr813:47
gordonjcpNeoti: AVI is a file format, not an encoding13:47
gordonjcpNeoti: you can make .avi files that just cannot sanely be edited13:48
Neotiwell over the last week i have had more luck with avi then ogv.13:48
gordonjcpNeoti: .avi and .ogv makes very little difference13:49
gordonjcpthe codec in use does13:49
popeyAlanBell: Google talk isnt USA only13:53
Neotiso based on the above unity/ubuntu 11.10 uses a differant or updated codec which is broken! to the codecs used on ubuntu 10.10 ?13:53
jacobwno13:54
jacobwits nothing to do with ubuntu13:54
AlanBellapplications like openshot benefit from an extra year of development Neoti13:55
popeyNeoti: read all of the above, and cant actually see what the issue is13:55
shaunoa bit slow, but I'm using jabberd14 to provide an xmpp server  (and it sounds like you're confusing google chat with google voice - the later is the telephony 'thing', and is US-only.  talk is just IM/xmpp, and is global)13:55
popeynothing specific anyway13:55
AlanBellshauno: yeah, I am no doubt confused13:56
AlanBellI only looked at XMPP 4 years or so ago when looking at Sametime and SIP stuff13:56
AlanBellany instructions on trying google talk, all I see on http://www.google.com/talk/ is a browser plugin and an XP client13:58
shaunoI don't use their service; I run my own jabber server, and can talk to people who are using their service, because xmpp 'federates'13:58
AlanBellok13:59
popeyAlanBell: which client?14:00
shaunoI believe the capabilty is coming to Live (nee msn) soon too.  and aol/aim already has it. so eventually we can chat to people cross networks without needing ugly client-side hacks (like having 8 accounts signed into one client)14:00
popeyhttp://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Talk/thread?tid=423612adbab19852&hl=en AlanBell14:00
popey3rd party clients can access it14:00
Neotiok from the begining for popey, i recorded a test video on ubuntu 11.10 32bit with unity and all updates as of 11am yesterday, i updated kdenlive so i was using the most up to date copy, and in clip monitor when i view the recorded video i get little grey blocks on the video before rendering and befor adding it to the time lline... if i open the recorded video just in move player it views fine no gray little blocks so14:01
Neotithe problem is pointed at kdenlive, so i thought i would add another clip in avi format from a couple of months ago and see what happend and again i got the same little gray blocks in clip monitor so the problem would seem to be kdenlive... i had an ubuntu 10.10 installation on a machine so i updated kdenlive to latest and added the same videos and no little gray blocks. so the problem now points to kdenlive on unity/u14:01
Neotibuntu 11.10. i do still have some problems with rendering but i think i have found a way to fix them14:01
popeyNeoti: what video card?14:03
Neoti04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G98 [GeForce 8400 GS] (rev a1)14:03
popeycolour me unsurprised14:03
Neotialso i have tried this in 11.10 on a dell 15r laptop and i get the same results14:04
popeyi get video corruption when using 3d desktop recording on nvidia14:04
Neotithat has an intel graphics card14:04
Neotihumm...... so if i dont use 3d desktop it should be fine ? humm time to test that out14:05
popeyi had better success with unit2d and the compositor switched off14:06
popeyfor recording a 3d game specifically14:06
popeyAlanBell: i use bitlbee connected to google talk for my alan@popey.com address.14:11
shaunoI've never actually tried bitlbee.  does moving that kinda thing into your irc client really work out well?14:13
popeyi dont use it that much tbh14:17
popeynot many people contact me via IM anymore14:17
Neotipopey i think you might be right about compositing ? i not longer get grey blocks on 11.04 gonna test on my other machine un unity 2d with no composit14:27
popeyi did have some success with just recording the desktop using an ffmpeg script14:30
popeyhttps://launchpad.net/ffscreencast14:30
popeywhich records the audio from the sound card and from a microphone14:30
Neotipopy AlanBell ok after testing im sticking with avi works in kdenlive 10.10 and my videos from now on are going to be in avi not ogv but i need to find a ubuntu screen capture program that will output in avi format14:49
NeotiAlanBell just testing openshot now ...14:49
Neotiok i have had a quick play and ogv sucks BIG TIME!!!!!!! the videos i made on windows with CamStudio in AVI format work perfectly for editing, the ubuntu recordings with recordmyscreen suck... i can not edit them well some messes up!!15:05
gordyou know you can convert ogv into another format prior to editing right?15:06
Neotiyes and when i did that it might as well had been a ogv file same thing happend.....15:06
popeydepends what you convert it to15:06
popeyalso, this is not news ☺15:07
Neotiogv to avi with memcoder15:07
popeyogv has never been good for video editing15:07
gordwould be nice to move things over to webm these days also, theora is old15:07
NeotiWHY THE FOOK DO GOOD PROGRAMS LIKE RECORDMYDESKTOP USE IT THEN !!!!! AGH... OGV SUCKS!!!15:07
popeybecause some of us dont actually edit15:08
AlanBellit is easy to write to I guess15:08
gordat any rate, if you convert it to say mp4 using mencoder - then still have problems. the issue is not with the container or the codec15:08
gordbut rather, the editor15:08
Neotiok ok... if you are recording something to just dump on youtube fine its ok... but when you want to edit it and add titles and cut bits out ITS FLIPPIN CRAP!!!!15:08
popey+115:08
AlanBelland you don't have to pay licenses to anyone to create a video in ogv format15:08
popeyso convert it?15:09
Neotii would love to see a program like CamStudio be ported to ubuntu and USE AVI!!!!15:10
NeotiCamStudio is awesome...15:10
Neotiit outputs in a good editable format ... IE Kdenlive will edit it...15:11
popeymy ffmpeg script does ☺15:11
popeyas does kazam15:11
Neotii want recordmydesktop to switch to AVI!!!15:11
Neotilol :P15:11
gordavi is a bad format, everyone is moving away from it15:11
popeyuse h264 in an mkv container and you will have more success IMO15:11
Neotikazam did not give me the option to save the video after i recorded a 30 sec test clip just loading term typeing ifconfig clear finish video etc15:12
Neotigord yes h264 and mkv is good... i have had nothing too bad happen when trying to edit that format ...15:12
gordonjcpNeoti: .ogv/.avi makes no difference15:13
Neotibut camstudio outputs to avi so ... have to use what i got...! lol15:13
gordonjcpNeoti: it's just a wrapper around the encoding15:13
gordonjcplike I told you earlier15:13
gordonjcpNeoti: the problem is you basically don't understand video editing ;-)15:14
gordonjcpany sort of compressed format that uses keyframes is going to give you problems15:14
popeyNeoti: i recorded a video 5 mins ago with kazam and it worked fine15:14
Neotigordonjcp i see your point but after riding my hair out for the last week trying to edit 1 10min video the evidence i have says something else is going on.15:14
gordlove film send me too many discs these days, keep losing them15:14
gordonjcpNeoti: okay, what are you shooting on?15:14
Neotirecordmydesktop on a HP DX2400 dual core @ 800x600 @15FPS15:15
gordonjcpokay15:15
gordonjcpso what output format is it saving to?15:15
Neotii have pauses in the video where i clicked pause etc15:16
popeyahhh15:16
Neotiogv15:16
popeyyou pause recordmydesktop?15:16
popeyyeah, dont do that, thats broken15:16
Neotiyes15:16
Neotijust like in camstudio15:16
gordonjcpNeoti: yes, but what format?15:16
popeygordonjcp: ogv15:16

popeyrmd is barely maintained anymore15:17
popeyas is xvidcap so i asked for it to be removed from the repo15:17
popeywe shoudl fix up kazam and get rmd removed too15:17
Neotipopey yes...15:18
Neotihowever on my 11.04 it just does not load15:19
gordonjcpwow15:19
AlanBellwhat is the package name for kazam?15:19
gordonjcprmd *really* shows up the graphics corruption bug ;-)15:19

gordonjcpI was going to use something like rmd or kazam to record a demo video of some of my software15:21
gordonjcpthat's not going to work though15:21
popeyswat_: remind me when/where?15:21
gordshould get it moved over to webm15:22
swat_popey: the where would be crawley/brighton - but the date is up for discussion15:22
popeygord: it does already do webm15:22
gordpopey, am just reading the code, but it looks hard-coded to x264 from here15:22
popeywonder if he removed webm then15:23
popeyyou looking at lp:kazam?15:23
AlanBellx264 is the one franhoffer want a cut of right?15:23
gordi am, it actually looks like the temp file gets saved as x264 then it gets encoded with gstreamer over to whatever you want15:23
popeyah15:24
gordthe temp file needs to be changed to webm or, really, something lossless15:24
gordAlanBell, franhoffer and about a million other people15:24
gordthere is a "consortium" ;)15:24
popeyfile a bug gord ☺15:24
AlanBellgord: a cartel15:24
popeythe problem is that webm writing isnt anywhere near as performant15:24
popeyso you get a crappy fps15:24
MyrttiI was going to suggest on the mailing list to use a live disk and run 'shred -vn 7' on the disk, but then I read man shred and it says it's not reliable on ex3 (and probably not on ext4 then, either)15:25
gordyea huffyuv would make more sense15:25
Myrttinow I'm disappointed and baffled15:25
popeybut huffyuv has colourspace issues15:25
popeyrgb vs yuv15:25
Neotiavi created by camstudio on ubuntu 11.10 in kdenlive works15:25
penguin42Myrtti: Shred on the entire disk is OK, shredding individual files on a journalled filesystem is difficult15:26
gordtheres a colourspace conversion, but yuv has enough precision to handle it15:26
gordmathematically, rgb -> yuv -> rgb will end up with a different value, but really just because of floating point limitations15:26
penguin42Myrtti: If something overwrites the data in a file the filesystem may just put the new data elsewhere not really overwriting the original sector15:27
penguin42Myrtti: And it'll go through the journal as well15:27
popeyin gstreamer gord ?15:27
gordpopey, don't follow, whats it got to do with gstreamer?15:28
Myrttioh, that would make sense, I suspected that could be the case and it was - as I said - baffling15:28
popeyhow else will the conversion happen gord ?15:28
popeyif kazam wrote temp to huffyuv and you choose to export/save to x264 or webm15:29
gordpopey, ffmpeg converts the rgb screen capture to huffyuv. gstreamer loads the huffyuv and then just deliverts the video data (doing any conversions it needs, gstreamer handles that fine) to the encoder15:29
gordhonestly, pretty much every video codec under the sun is in yuv or some variant anyway15:29
* AlanBell fails to be impressed by kazam results so far15:30
MartijnVdSKazam. Is that like shazam?15:30
popeyI'd like to see anyone impressed with any screencasting app on linux, especially on a composited desktop ☹15:38
popeythey _all_ suck15:38
penguin42the graphics drivers need fixing!15:39
penguin42popey: Are the gnome-screenshot apps working reliably for you with compositing?15:39
shaunohopefully it'll see some improvement when they finally take X out back 'n shoot it15:39
penguin42shauno: Doubt it15:39
popeyi hear the gnome shell screencasting app is good15:40
popeynot tried it15:40
penguin42popey: The reason I ask about the screenshot is that you'd hope the screencast stuff would use the same mechanisms15:40
gordgnome-screenshot works fine15:41
gordbut it takes one huge framebuffer snapshot, screencasting apps can't have that luxury if they want to be quick15:41
penguin42gord: Sure - but isn't it the same interface?15:41
gordno15:42
penguin42ah15:42
penguin42gord: what interface do the screen casters used?15:42
popeyx11grab15:42
AlanBellwith kazam do you save the file or send it to openshot?15:43
penguin42but either way that means the graphics card is successfully getting the composited data back for the screenshot15:43
popeyi always save15:43
gordyou are assuming that graphics cards are syncronous15:44
AlanBellok, I was sending to openshot and it seemed really low resolution and 8 minutes long for some reason. then the desktop crashed altogether15:44
gordthey are very very asyncronous, X will return that a geometry on the screen has changed - but the gpu has not drawn it yet15:44
penguin42gord: Ah, and the full screen shot is doing a sync?15:45
gordit doesn't matter for a fullscreenshot15:45
gordyou are just capturing what things are like now15:45
penguin42gord: Yeh true15:45
AlanBellturns out kazam is fine, openshot is not best friends with webm right now15:52
popeywebm doesnt seem mature enough15:53
gordits pretty good for what i need it for, basically as a format i can trust youtube won't screw up15:54
gordand its better than theora as a "default" for ubuntu, given we can't choose 26415:54

SupermanintightsAlanBell, i run windows and ubuntu17:43
Supermanintightswindows is the active OS on that screenshot, but it's just what i'm working in - i can switch to ubuntu in seconds if it's required?17:44
AlanBellSupermanintights: well I am not really sure what the question has to do with Ubuntu :)17:44
AlanBellI guess ubuntu is the 20gb drive with 4gb of swap right?17:45
SupermanintightsLOL17:45
AlanBells/drive/partition/17:45
shaunothe platform-agnostic answer is that the partitions labelled there as C: and G: aren't going to be mergable if that's what order they're in on-disk.  you need concurrent space for that17:45
SupermanintightsAlanBell, the question is justified as ubtunu guys helped me to arrange the different partitions ;-), yes you're right17:45
AlanBellI think windows has something like LVM these days but I don't know what they call it17:46
HazRPGSupermanintights: what shauno said... (took the words out of my mouth almost - sorta speak)17:46
Supermanintightscheers shauno/hazrpg - i'm looking at a way of changing the order now17:47
shaunolast time I used windows, the partitioner was a blue & yellow tool in dos :/17:47
shaunoso I've no idea what it'll offer to abstract a volume above those two17:47
HazRPGSupermanintights: without risking being hit in the face, the only way your going to be able to do that is lose some data to have some space to merge with17:48
HazRPGs/without/at the risk/*17:48
Supermanintightsmeh17:49
Supermanintightsok, thanks17:49
Supermanintightsi'll find a way17:49
HazRPGSupermanintights: best thing to do, open up the "manage" tool (I forget its actual name in windows, access: right-click "my computer" or "Computer" and pick "Manage") and select the hard drive management one... then screencap that so we can see the order of your drive17:53
HazRPGSupermanintights: alternatively, go into ubuntu and check out gparted17:53
Supermanintightsi did try gparted before, but i couldn't figure it out - how to do this task17:54
Supermanintightshttp://screencast.com/t/xM4pOm8JKT17:54
HazRPGSupermanintights: to merge, your going to have to clear something first, be it the G: drive, etc... but it highly depends on the order your drives are partitioned17:55
Supermanintightswould it be better/easier to go back into gparted? (only reason screenshots are windows is because it's what I'm using at the moment) - hte B/G (same one) drive are empty17:55

Supermanintightsd: is my storage, that's fine17:57
HazRPGseems to me, that D and B are logical, so the only merge you can do is D to B...17:58
SupermanintightsC:\ has less than 1gb of free space - that's my windows software partition17:58
Supermanintightsi need to merge B with C17:58
SupermanintightsC needs to be extended17:58
popeyok, that can be done, but its long and you could lose data17:58
popeybut I would do it in gparted17:58
Supermanintightsi'm happy to go to gparted17:58
popeydelete B, move D up the disk17:58
Supermanintightsgive me 2 seconds and i'll boot into it now17:58
popeyno17:58
popeywait17:58
popeybah17:59
HazRPGbah indeed o.O17:59
Supermanintightssorry, i was hasty - "delete B, move up the disk"17:59
Supermanintightsok, what next17:59
popeywell, first is 'backup'18:00
HazRPGpopey: is it really possible without him a) losing ubuntu settings/etc, b) losing media and storage, c) losing both data18:00
popeyyes HazRPG18:00
popeyi haven't finished18:00
HazRPGpopey: cool, go ahead :)18:00
Supermanintightsbackup - my backup drive is corrupted, so i'll have to take the risk (I'll live if it loses everything)18:00
popeyok, so basically the thing you want to do is delete B, shrink the extended partition D lives in, move the extended partition containing D to the right, move the swap partition to the right, move ubuntu partition to the right, expand C into the space made18:02
Supermanintightsah i get you18:03
Supermanintightsi think18:03
popeyyou can do all that in gparted18:04
Supermanintightsawesome18:04
Supermanintightsjust backing up my work files and nzb's onto my mem stick18:04
Supermanintightsthen i'll go do it18:04
matttif there's anything i dislike doing, it's shopping18:05
HazRPGpopey: ahh, i see what you did there...18:05
DJonesHas anybody noticed that American TV ad's are actually better than 80% of British TV?18:11
gordonjcpDJones: no, not particularly18:12
DJonesJust watching some tv via the web which has american tv ad's and they're far funnier & more entertaining18:12
gordonjcpI don't know18:14
gordonjcpI find that 99% of american TV programmes seem to be just a stream of dick and fart jokes with a laugh track badly dubbed over18:14
gordonjcpor crap police procedurals that constantly drop the anvil about the evils of drugs18:14
DJonesI'm just talking about the tv ad breaks, not the programmes themselves18:15
gordonjcpah, I don't watch TV with ads in18:16
gordonjcpI don't really watch a lot of TV, tbh18:17
AlanBellDJones: when I was in America everything seemed to be adverts for drugs you should demand from your doctor18:17
DJonesAlanBell: This is mostly cars & IRS tax savings scams18:17

gordonjcpinteresting stuff18:52
MartijnVdSpenguin42: ooh, shiny18:55
penguin42I'm averaging about 7.1Mbps apparently - ADSL sync'd at about 11Mbps18:56
MartijnVdSI'm still waiting (since October..) for the fibre people to finish their work18:56
MartijnVdSFibre with my address on it sticks out of the ground 7 floors down18:56
MartijnVdSI WANT MY 500/500!18:56
penguin42MartijnVdS: And then what is supposed to happen? Do they run fibre up to your flat?18:57
MartijnVdSpenguin42: yes18:57
MartijnVdSpenguin42: everyone gets a (set of) fibre for themselves18:57
penguin42MartijnVdS: OK, it's just it would kind of make sense for a building of that size to run fast fibre to the basement and shove a switch on it18:57
MartijnVdSpenguin42: so 500/500 for everyone who wants it!18:58
MartijnVdSpenguin42: they're thinking big :)18:58

MartijnVdSbastones: an nvidia one19:19
bastonesAh right19:19
MartijnVdSpopey: nouveau or the non-free driver?19:19
bastonesHave you installed the proprietary driver?19:20
popeyi am using nvidia-current, yes19:21
MartijnVdSpopey: does nouveau work at all?19:22
bastonesDid you have the same issue(s) when using the nouveau driver?19:22
popeyit works, but i havent used it recently19:22
bastonesYou may want to try uninstall the proprietary driver perhaps. just a thought.19:22
popeysure, one thing at a time19:22
bastonesI suggested it in the case that using Unity 2D results in the same issue.19:24
HazRPGanyone good at debugging/fixing audio issues? Because I'm sadly still without sound :(19:29
HazRPGseems jackd screwed things up (and it only got installed because an app installed it), however reverting back to pulse/alsa seems to not be working19:29
HazRPGpulse just seems to hang on startup19:30
popeydid you uninstall jackd?19:34
MartijnVdSyes, and jackd2 :)19:34

gorddavmor2, quad core i7 on mine20:43
davmor2hmmm can't help you out there sorry :(20:43
gordto be honest, the only reason i haven't got one is because i'd have to take everything apart and put it back together again20:44

popeyhow so?23:19
popeyother than silverlight23:19
jutnuxNetflix was good for the month free trial ;-)23:20
matttpopey: selection is terrible23:20
mgdmI'm hoping they get an app on the Sony Bravia some time soon so I can try it out23:20
mgdmLovefilm has that, for what it's worth23:20
shaunoI've been rather disappointed with netflix too23:26
shaunothe good news is that it adapts if it thinks you're travelling.  you'll be offered the US library from a US IP23:26
shaunoother than that, it's mostly bollywood and chinese movies23:27
shaunoa fantastic example, is that it has "donnie darko 2: samantha darko".  but not "donnie darko" itself.  B-movies'R'us23:28
mgdmI didn't even know there was a sequel23:28
popeystay that way23:28
* mgdm is currently watching Ghostbusters23:29

shaunoI understand that they have to renegotiate content with the local licencees.  my main problem is that you can only do the trial once.  so I can't check back in 6 months to see if they have any content yet23:30
* mgdm is still amused that the XML namespace for XUL is http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul23:30
matttshauno: i did a random search for superbad and two of the actors in it ... nothing came up23:30
matttshauno: which gives you an indication as to how lacking it is23:30
