BarkingFishWhat you need to do is open System Settings, go to Regional and Language, Select Keyboard Layout and click the Advanced tab.00:00
BarkingFishIn the list, you'll see "Compose key position", which allows you to pick which key you want. Set one, apply it and save.00:01
BarkingFishOnce you've picked your compose key, you do the following to enter characters like that:00:01
BarkingFishPress and release the compose key, then SHIFT+2 for ", then the letter you want.  For example, Compose + " + A = Ä00:02
BarkingFishFor the ß  - it's simply Compose + s + s00:05
littlegirlBarkingFish: Oh, thank you!!! You're a sweetheart! (:00:06
BarkingFishno problem00:06
BarkingFishI use them a lot, it's quite useful once you set the key up, it's just complicated picking where you want the key and actually assigning it00:07
littlegirlBarkingFish: I'm going to do it right now while I'm still in here. (:00:07
BarkingFishyou can do all the basic international lettering using the compose key, along with other symbols from your keyboard.  Apostrophes give you acute accents, like é - the ^ sign gets used for circumflexes, like û...00:08
BarkingFishand commas for the little hooked thingy under a french letter C :)  ç00:08
BarkingFishremember though, for ones using a symbol, it's always Compose, then the symbol, then the letter.00:09
littlegirlBarkingFish: Okay, I set up left Ctrl key, so I press Ctrl + s + s and end up with the sharp S. That's perfect. How do I do umlaut a, o, and u in lower and upper case? I don't need any other letters, like the French letter or letters with carets. (:00:14
BarkingFishok, for a lower case a, o or u with an umlaut00:14
BarkingFishcompose + (shift 2) + a, o or u00:15
littlegirlBarkingFish: Aha, got it! Ctrl + " + a, etc. (:00:15
BarkingFishso ä ö ü00:15
littlegirlBarkingFish: Thank you SO much! This will make life SO much simpler! Will this also work in other programs or just Kate?00:15
BarkingFishit works in everything that takes text except a terminal00:15
BarkingFisheven Libreoffice supports it00:15
BarkingFishremember, if you want the umlauted letters in caps, you shift them too, so:00:16
=== mohammad is now known as Guest83517
BarkingFishcompose + (shift 2) + (shift a) = Ä00:16
littlegirlBarkingFish: Yep, I've got that now, so you're shifting for the quotes and for the A or O or U. Perfect!!! (:00:16
BarkingFishgot it00:17
BarkingFish:)00:17
littlegirlBarkingFish: Oh my, I use Claws Mail, which is not the default mail program, and it even works in that! Oh, you have made my life SO much simpler! I've been copying and pasting, and that gets old fast. (:00:17
littlegirlBarkingFish: Thank you so much! I love you forever! I'm off to go write Umlauts. (:00:19
* BarkingFish goes to bed with warm fuzzy feeling of making someone's life better :)00:20

bassoDoes anyone have a guide on "How to get the most out of KDE"?02:26
KimlarouxBe curious, have some spare time02:28
bassonawww :(02:29
DaskreecHbasso: wouldn't someone have to do that first ot be able to write a guide?02:30
bassoDaskreecH: yes, and then they should post it on the interwebs <.<02:31
DaskreecHI don't know that's possible :)02:31
DaskreecH I've played with KDE for years and I'm constantly finding new things it does02:32
DaskreecHbut perhaps we can help. What would you like to do with KDE?02:32
Kimlarouxthat's because they keep on added stuff =P02:32
Kimlarouxadding*02:32
DaskreecHYeah and they have lots of stuff undocumented02:32
DaskreecHand things added a while back that you just forget about02:33
DaskreecHI totally forgot that you could tab applications till last night02:33
Urbanproslt all02:34
Kimlarouxyeah and some stuff that used to be easy to do are now impossible02:35
Kimlarouxlike how can I lock all the Gimp windows together so that when I bring one up, they all do?02:36
DaskreecHslt02:36
DaskreecHWas that grouping? I forget what that was called02:36
DaskreecHbasso: are you looking for tips or like workflows?02:37
Kimlarouxthey changed what grouping does, now it brings all the windows into a single one places tabs into the title bar02:37
bassoahh yes workflows would be nice to explore02:37
DaskreecHWell you may want to look at activities02:39
DaskreecHbasso: do you have desktop effects on?02:43

indystormOK guys- I don't know if I even really have a question here, but I like the idea of Kubuntu as a distro- but I have always had so many problems with it. I'm a distro hopper- trying out one or another every few weeks, but kubuntu just seems so unstable to me. I load it up, and it doesn't perform updates, and hangs, the package manager crashes, it freezes on boot... It's just insane- it seems02:48
indystormcrazy to me that this is happening. What I've done to get around this is install Ubuntu server edition, and then put KDE on top of that, and it's rock solid. I crashed that system today, by my own doing, and decided I'd try the kubuntu 11.10 install, and it's the same ol' unstable distro I've always remembered.... Could I possibly be doing something wrong here??? What is going on?!02:48
bassoindystorm: i installed kde 4.8 on my ubuntu 11.10, nothing seems wrong here02:50
bassowelcome zuanny02:52
bassoare you drinking coffee?02:52
indystormI know, but the problems I run into are with the kubuntu 11.10 ISO download file--- when I install that I have all kinds of problems....!02:54
DaskreecHindystorm: such as ?02:55
DaskreecHbasso: ctrl+F9 works as well02:55
indystormread my first statement-- crashes on boot occasionally, software updates freeze, system hangs, the package manager crashes..... it's very bizzare- all kinds of problems- but the problems all go away when I install regular ubuntu server with KDE on top of it--- it's just weird- Why isn't the kubuntu iso download stable??02:56
kenBeside myself here - I lost my "Add / Remove Software" when I reinstalled Kubuntu 11.10 and I don't get anymore software updates... Any help is appreciated02:58
DaskreecHNot sure. Did you try just running sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade from a terminal02:58
DaskreecHken: alt+F2 -> Konsole -> sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop02:59
indystormhmmm no let me try that02:59

DaskreecHken: and alt-F2 -> package gives you no results ?03:01

jschalli ended up with a hosed system after muon ran updates. kdm doesn't have any sessions available, kdm's background is black, and it just kicks me back out if i try to log in20:35
mirrakororated: you can kill it or let it be, shouldn't make a difference. It's a part of akonadi that combines your data with metadata provided by nepomuk, but if nepomuk is not running that feeder should return nothing20:35
mirrakorjschall: are you familiar with the ttys (Strg+Alt+F1-F5) ?20:36

jschallmirrakor: no20:38
jschallmirrakor: something's hosed20:38

jschallmirrakor: only apt sources other than the default i have installed are google-chrome and ppa:gnumdk, and if i try to ppa-purge gnumdk it tries to remove 128 packages, which is basically all of kde20:40
mirrakorjschall: well, that could be part of the problem20:41
mirrakorjschall: does gnumdk contain any kde packages or just a dependency for them?20:41
jschallmirrakor: well, i'm not sure exactly20:41
jschallmirrakor: i assume so20:42
mirrakorjschall: got an url to the ppa?20:43

mirrakorjschall: probably all of kde ..., hm.. it doesn't provide you an option to use another version of those packages? (can you paste the output?)20:45

jschallwhy can't ppas be removed properly? ppa-purge is a joke, it has broken things every time i've tried to use it.21:02
mirrakorjschall: *gg* actually I come from gentoo and only use ubuntu on my laptop where I don't want to compile packages, so I can't tell to much about purge *gg* But technically I think purge does it's job, but in this case there's a dependency problem that it doesn't know how to solve21:03
jschallthe weird thing is that the gnumdk repository is only supposed to have 10 packages in it21:03
jschallexcept that i have hundreds of packages from it21:03
oratedjschall: add-apt-repository accepts a -r removes the PPA. Did you try that?21:04

levi501deSo I am having some serious lag issues with Xorg and what seems to be chrome since this last big update, anyone have similar problems?23:47
levi501desome info on the problem http://askubuntu.com/questions/100037/xorg-11-10-kernel-3-0-0-16-generic-running-extremely-high-cpu-memory-was-a-bug23:48
levi501deI asked in the ubuntu site but then realized its probably a good idea to ask in the Kubuntu irc room23:48
levi501deif anyone is around that is :D23:48
levi501deI'll be back in 20 gonna reboot my machine to see if some xorg config changes make a difference23:52
westmilevi501d go with 10.04 instead of 11.10?23:54
levi501dewhy?23:54
westmiwhy not?23:54
westmiit works very good23:54
westmistable release23:54
levi501deyeah true, i suppose i am being stubborn going for newer releases23:55
levi501deI might do that in the future, going to wipe and do full disk encryption with truecrypt at some point23:55
levi501debut i was wondering if this was a common issue23:55
levi501dei like to support furthering the system by submitting bug reports, though i havent had to with kubuntu till now23:55
levi501dei was hoping to figure out how to track down whats going on with xorg23:56
levi501delike a way to see what is querying xorg and what not23:56
westmiwhatm kind of pc are you using?23:56
levi501deKubuntu 11.10 x86_64 kernel 3.0.0-16-generic i7 @ 3.8GHz 24GB Ram NVIDIA gtx 260 running the 290.10 Drivers23:57
levi501dethe weird thing is my load average isnt that bad23:57
levi501dei have some serious resources23:57
levi501debut still my computer is laggy as hell23:57
levi501deespecially when running chrome23:57
levi501debut not only that, it lags without chrome running23:57
westmigeez-with that you should not be lagging...23:58
levi501dethis is a new occurence, i used to be able to run 5 vm's w/ 2gb each + 100's of tabs + netbeans + eclipse and no lag23:58
westmior it should not be a serious problem, anyways23:58
levi501debut now creating a new tab in chrome or pulling down yakuake is lagging me out23:59
levi501deyeah i put this hardware in so i wouldn't have lag :D23:59
