tgm4883 | kees, are you canonical? | 01:11 |
---|---|---|
bkerensa | tgm4883: Not anymore :) | 02:36 |
bkerensa | He works on awesomeness :P | 02:36 |
tgm4883 | ah | 02:36 |
bkerensa | Well I'm all moved into my new place :D Internet is working (Most important thing right?) | 02:37 |
bkerensa | tgm4883: http://outflux.net/prof/resume.php | 02:37 |
tgm4883 | nice | 02:38 |
bkerensa | tgm4883: But it would seem this channels Canonical numbers are increasing | 02:39 |
bkerensa | :D | 02:39 |
tgm4883 | bkerensa, ah | 02:39 |
* tgm4883 has a phone interview with canonical tomorrow | 02:39 | |
bkerensa | cweber10: Ping me and let me know what times and days will work best for checkins and mentoring for you | 02:39 |
bkerensa | tgm4883: Dont tell me QA? | 02:39 |
bkerensa | :D | 02:39 |
tgm4883 | nope, support | 02:40 |
tgm4883 | for launchpad it seems | 02:40 |
bkerensa | tgm4883: Thats much better in my book :P | 02:40 |
bkerensa | oh cool :) | 02:40 |
bkerensa | Canonical needs more people on the LP team | 02:40 |
tgm4883 | I've also got an offer from the local community college, I need to find out what types of things canonical offers | 02:41 |
bkerensa | tgm4883: Knock em dead. | 02:41 |
tgm4883 | I'll try :) | 02:41 |
bkerensa | tgm4883: Well obviously I dont work for Canonical but I have heard of some of the stuff they offer | 02:41 |
bkerensa | but I hear it differ per candidate | 02:41 |
bkerensa | :D | 02:41 |
tgm4883 | all I've heard is competitive pay based on where you live | 02:42 |
tgm4883 | which doesn't say alot | 02:42 |
bkerensa | tgm4883: might wanna ask albrigha (I'm not sure how much they can talk about their packages) he is a new hire but has been with the loco for a long time | 02:43 |
bkerensa | D: | 02:43 |
bkerensa | also | 02:44 |
bkerensa | http://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/nm0n0/working_for_canonical/ | 02:44 |
tgm4883 | yea I've seen that thread | 02:44 |
bkerensa | imho the biggest perk is you can work from home for most positions.... You get paid comparable (so I hear) the average for the position in the sector and you get to travel for sprints, uds.... I'm unsure about 401k, health etc in fact I would bet because they are international that they might just compensate you higher so you can seek those things on your own but thats a best guess :) | 02:46 |
tgm4883 | yea that was my guess as well | 02:47 |
bkerensa | I mean it would be too complicated for them to establish HMO's and benefits in all the countries they have employees | 02:47 |
bkerensa | I hear you get free premium U1 :P | 02:48 |
tgm4883 | bkerensa, I've heard you get free landscape | 02:48 |
bkerensa | yeah | 02:49 |
bkerensa | I hear its free services across the board plus you can pretty much request Ubuntu swag on demand to a level of reasonableness | 02:49 |
tgm4883 | I require a Ubuntu Jet! | 02:50 |
bkerensa | heh | 02:50 |
bkerensa | I think the company only has a Shuttle | 02:50 |
bkerensa | :P | 02:50 |
blkperl | bkerensa: want to come advertise ubuntu oregon at psu? | 04:28 |
TRAVISg | I added myself to the Wiki and then did a little housekeeping just went by the note to have everyone in order of city by number of members and then alphabet let me know if I was out of whack I have never changed a Wiki before | 08:36 |
bkerensa | blkperl: In what way and when? :) | 15:15 |
bkerensa | Does it require a talk? :P | 15:15 |
TRAVISg | I don't know if it requires a talk? | 15:31 |
TRAVISg | I just read the note about grouping by city and then alphabetically ........ wait a second I just realized that was about PSU | 15:32 |
TRAVISg | By the way if anyone wanted to brief me I would love to go with some one else to PSU or something like that | 15:33 |
TRAVISg | I love meeting people and speaking | 15:33 |
bkerensa | TRAVISg: I'm sure it looks fine and we are still planning a major wiki transformation that will result in that roster being moved to its own page | 15:37 |
bkerensa | jhmextern: Hello :) | 15:46 |
jhmextern | hello bkerensa | 15:46 |
bkerensa | jhmextern: How are things going? | 15:50 |
jhmextern | We have a group of five people here in the coast, and we are looking for a place where we can do maybe a monthly meeting. | 15:51 |
jhmextern | We were thinking another event like an install fest, but we are still in the planing stage | 15:52 |
bkerensa | jhmextern: Oh excellent. In Newport right? Please do send some photos if you guys have a meetup and let the mailing list know so others might join in | 15:53 |
jhmextern | Yes, in Newport, as soon as we have an event or meetup we will send some pictures | 15:54 |
bkerensa | excellent :) | 15:56 |

bkerensa | tgm4883: Did you do your call yet? | 21:19 |
tgm4883 | yea | 21:19 |
tgm4883 | Didn't go so well :/ | 21:20 |
bkerensa | tgm4883: I was going to mention that Canonical uhh has turned down a few really talented local folks | 21:21 |
tgm4883 | mrevell was pretty cool about it, sent me an email about 30 minutes after the call saying that he would have left my application open but since I already had another job offer locally he didn't want to leave me hanging | 21:22 |
bkerensa | ahh Matt Revell interviewed you? :) | 21:22 |
tgm4883 | yea | 21:22 |
bkerensa | hmm :( | 21:23 |
bkerensa | yeah he is product manager for Launchpad | 21:23 |
bkerensa | :D | 21:23 |
tgm4883 | Apparently there were more qualified candidates, although I'm ADV team working support for Symantec, so IDK | 21:23 |
bkerensa | heh | 21:23 |
tgm4883 | There aren't many people above me in our support organization | 21:23 |
bkerensa | They turned down someone I know who is Senior Sysadmin for a major company here in Portland with a very similiar excuse | 21:24 |
bkerensa | :D | 21:24 |
tgm4883 | yep, oh well. Guess that just makes my decision up for me | 21:25 |
bkerensa | Mind you he was applying fr a regular sysadmin job and just saw working from home as a perk to taking a small pay decrease and yet they turned him down | 21:25 |
bkerensa | :D | 21:25 |
bkerensa | tgm4883: I think the foot in seems to be getting recommended by someone who is already work there | 21:26 |
sbeattie | bkerensa: sometimes. sometimes not, it all depends on who's doing the hiring. | 21:26 |
bkerensa | lol :P | 21:27 |
bkerensa | :D | 21:27 |
bkerensa | sbeattie: Well I know Canonical has some outstanding people working for them | 21:28 |
bkerensa | :) | 21:28 |
sbeattie | bkerensa: yeah, but it also has people like me working for them, too. :-) | 21:28 |
bkerensa | sbeattie: You don't consider yourself outstanding :P | 21:29 |
* bkerensa pings sabdfl :P | 21:29 | |
bkerensa | idk from the people I have met so far and some I have know over IRC for awhile I like the diversity and skill level | 21:30 |
bkerensa | tgm4883: I'm not sure why you want to leave Symantec except for maybe that they are outside of Portland right? | 21:32 |
tgm4883 | bkerensa, I'm driving to Springfield from Salem every day | 21:55 |
tgm4883 | :/ | 21:55 |
bkerensa | Wow | 21:59 |
bkerensa | :D | 21:59 |
bkerensa | tgm4883: Now I understand... Thats intense | 21:59 |
bkerensa | tgm4883: Doesn't Symantec have a location up here in Portland? I think one of the ORLUG guys works at it | 22:00 |
tgm4883 | bkerensa, we bought some cloud company up there | 22:51 |
tgm4883 | and we have sales in beaverton | 22:51 |
bkerensa | hmm | 22:51 |
bkerensa | tgm4883: Consider maybe trying to switch to the cloud division? :) I'm sure you're capable of sysadming right? :P | 22:52 |
bkerensa | PuppetLabs is hiring too :D | 22:52 |
tgm4883 | most things I've looked at require some enterprise level experience | 22:55 |
tgm4883 | which I'll get at my new job | 22:55 |
bkerensa | hmm yeah | 22:57 |
TRAVISg | Whats up y'all? | 23:49 |

bkerensa | then see your sound applications section or on Unity search for Sound :) | 23:54 |
TRAVISg | That's what my early research pointed to thanks for the confirmation | 23:55 |
TRAVISg | I haven't been running unity been running gnome classic | 23:55 |
TRAVISg | I like the menu layout | 23:55 |
TRAVISg | and use synaptic still I like it better than the software center | 23:56 |
bkerensa | TRAVISg: Classic on which release of Ubuntu? | 23:57 |
TRAVISg | 11.10 Oneric not sure if it is called classic but I think it is I had to install it | 23:58 |
TRAVISg | seperatly | 23:58 |
