LaibschHey, my main system is lucy but I want to try out precise and I hope somebody here can help me achieve that.  I have an encrypted LVM.  The main /boot is on a separate partition unencrypted.03:10
LaibschI have created a new partition in the encrypted LVM and it holds a precise installation.  How do I chainload that partition to grub?  Or do I have to move at least the /boot portion of that precise install outside the encryption container?03:12
urlin2uLaibsch, lucy?03:15
Laibschsorry, lucid ;-)03:16
Laibschclose enough, no?03:16
urlin2unope lol03:16
Laibschurlin2u: you have an idea how to go about this?03:16
urlin2uLaibsch, not really.03:17
ali1234every time i run update manager it tries to install openjdk-6-jre:i38604:28
ali1234but this package can't be installed because it conflicts with openjdk-6-jre04:28
Laibschali1234: what exactly is your question?04:37
ali1234how to rectify this situation?04:37
Laibschlooks like a multi-archi issue04:39
Laibschthe package conflicts with itself?04:39
ali1234no, the i386 package conflicts with the 64 bit version04:40
LaibschIf I were you, I'd poke around with aptitude to learn about the dependencies04:40
ali1234i know about dependencies04:40
ali1234there are none04:40
ali1234and in fact, if i use for example "apt-get dist-upgrade" it does not attempt to install those packages04:40
Laibschis your system mainly 64 bit with some packages from i385?04:40
ali1234only update manager is doing this04:40
ali1234yes04:40
Laibschoh, that's indeed strange04:40
ali1234i am writing a bug report04:41
Laibschthe "only update-manager" part04:41
LaibschI always use aptitude only04:41
Laibschmuch easier to deal with for me04:41
micahgumm, they shouldn't conflict with each other, but they have to stay in sync version wise04:42
ali1234they don't actually conflict in the apt sense04:42
micahgaptitude doesn't handle multiarch well04:42
micahg*yet04:42
ali1234the actual error is " conffile './etc/java-6-openjdk/security/java.policy' is not in sync with other instances of the same package"04:42
micahgat least in terms of conflicts04:42
ali1234and  './usr/share/applications/openjdk-6-policytool.desktop' is different from the same file on the system04:43
ali1234then dpkg crashes04:43
ali1234anyway i'm putting all this in the bug report04:43
micahgali1234: that's a multiarch bug, please file against openjdk-6 and tag multiarch04:43
ali1234ok. but what about the fact that only update-manager actually wants to do this, while apt-get doesn't?04:44
Laibschmicahg: good to know.  I'm still using lucid for everyday things.  I've been struggling with a dual-boot between lucid and natty/maverick/oneiric/precise ever since because I made the mistake to encrypt my HD.04:44
micahgLaibsch: encrypting the HD is a good thing :)04:45
Laibschor so I thought04:45
micahgLaibsch: I'd suggest a second drive for the precise partition, you should still be able to chainload into that from lucid04:45
Laibschat least ecryptfs has given me more than a fair share of headaches, it's not ready yet, IMVHO04:46
Laibschno space for a second drive in my laptop ;)  and booting from USB would likely be dog slow.  besides my only external HD is 6.000 miles away ;-)  problems, problems ;-)04:47
Laibschcan somebody please test if bug 924103 is also present in precise?  I'm still precise-challenged ;-)05:24
ubottuLaunchpad bug 924103 in grub2 (Ubuntu) "grub-probe only recognizes FAT not FAT32" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/92410305:24
FudgeLaibsch  i can tell u its not picking up osx partitions but thats about it05:52
Laibschthanks, Fudge.  No FAT32 partition handy (on a USB stick, for example)?  Can you please leave a comment about those osx partitions, although technically, that may be a separate bug.05:54
Ian_CorneFudge: It just randomly pops up06:29
Ian_Corneand it messes up my alt tabbing06:29
Fudgeoh why does it mess with the switcher Ian_Corne06:38
Fudgei use tha tloads06:38
snadgeif only unity wasn't such a pain in the arse to build from source06:48
snadgeeven with a guide.. sigh ;)06:48
codepalI'm getting used to the tabbing, barely use it06:49
codepaleasier to use the workspace switcher06:50
codepalI've used unity for over 18hrs now....06:50
snadgeive been on it for months now.. but an irritating bug has been fixed in trunk06:50
snadgei should say.. a bug thats been in all versions of unity that i have used06:51
snadgehas *finally* been fixed in trunk06:51
snadgeso im on a mission to try and compile trunk.. and well.. its a bit painful at the moment06:51
codepalsnadge, good luck - I'm sure it'd take quite awhile to complete a full compile...06:52
snadgeno im just building the bits that i have to06:52
snadgeits not too bad06:52
codepalaha - whew06:52
snadgeso far.. nux and unity.. but now i have to include bamf06:52
snadgewhich isnt part of the guide.. but you know how these things god06:53
snadgeerr go06:53
snadgeand of course theres other issues which are preventing a release.. but if it fixes this long standing unity focus bug.. i'll be over the moon06:54
snadgehopefully the fix is backported to 11.1006:54
snadgezomg it compiled ;)06:56
Fudgewhats the bug that got fixed06:56
snadgewell it hasnt even been reported but basically06:56
snadgeif you switch workspace to one which has say.. firefox on it.. and type into the location bar.. the autocomplete feature sometimes doesnt work06:57
snadgeand if you right click (context menu) then move the mouse over the menu, it will disappear06:57
snadgeunless you refocus the window by manually clicking on the title bar06:57
codepalwhat's the deal with this ALT + F2 + r thing?06:57
codepalI've tried it, doesn't seem to do anything for my shell themes, or nada...06:58
Fudgewhats it supposed to do codepal06:59
codepalTyping 'r' or 'restart' in the Alt+F2 prompt will restart GNOME Shell. This is useful when you are make changes to the GNOME Shell code while working within the GNOME Shell. You don't need to compile anything if you only changed JavaScript code, but you need to run compilation as you would normally do for C code before restarting.07:03
codepalcopied from gnome-shells website07:03
codepalUnity is based on Gnome3 isn't it? - http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/CheatSheet07:04
crizzyno07:04
crizzyunity is a _shell_ for gnome 307:04
crizzygnome-shell is the official shell07:05
codepalhuh - O yeah, right! - sorry my mistook.07:05

acer_aspire8930Hi all does anyone else have issues with mozilla firefox and thunderbird when printing,  sometimes the letters are printed on top of one another or letters are spaced out across the page.  This happens when printing to HP laserjet and PDF file.18:09
imnicholI'm suddenly experiencing a bug where I close my laptop, it suspends, and then when I open it again the screen is not locked18:47
imnicholAnyone else seeing that?18:47
trismimnichol: have you updated recently? there were several patches to gnome-screensaver and gnome-settings-daemon that were supposed to fix that18:49
imnicholI'm running my updates now18:49
imnicholIn fact, brb testing it18:50
olyhi, been having some problems with unity in 12.04, unity 2d works fine and gnome shell works along with 3d acceleration but standard unity loads minus the launcher19:58
olyif i boot in and launch unity --replace i do not get any errors i have pasted the output here http://pastebin.com/FK0jBgCk19:59
urlin2uoly, did you install the compizconfig settings manager and make sure the unity plugin is ticked on?20:00
olyanyone encountered this, or any ideas how to fix, been happening for like the last month just using unity 2d hoping it would fix itself20:01
olyhum, urlin2u quite likely i have it so i will check that pretty certain i never disabled it though :p20:01
trismoly: try a: unity --reset; and then log out/back in, I had a similar problem earlier this month, think some settings got messed up20:02
urlin2uoly, tweaking compiz is problematic with unity you have to know what your doing, there are lots of webpages on what to exspect, a compiz restart button is a great help.20:03
olyurlin2u, that was it launched ccsm and enabled untity, there was a load of conflicts but i have resolved them :)20:05
urlin2uoly, cool. :D20:06
olytrism, thanks think i will do a reset anyway this machine has been through many versions of ubuntu and may help reset anything i have tweaked along the way20:06
