seawingI an running kubuntu 11.10 on my lenovo laptop. there is a problem : when I am using the keyboard in any program the cursor will frequently loose focus at random times. it does not do this in my windows partition nor does it do it with a live disk of the same distro. Any suggestions to relieve this frustrating bug would be greatly appriciated.01:06
Daskreechseawing: the cursor loses focus?01:12
seawingmeaning I have to click with the mouse to continue typing.01:13
seawinglike that window is no longer in focus.01:14
Daskreechand you aren't touching the touchpad while you are typing01:14
Daskreech?01:14
seawingno. and like I said it doesn't do in when using a live disk.01:15
DaskreechI think you can use ksynaptics to turn off the touchpad when you are typing01:15
seawinglet me try that again....01:15
seawingnope. I checked the box that turns off the touchpad while typing and attempted to type a sentence in a browser and got cut off part way through.01:18
seawing it is really anoying when attempting to type in a hidden password field.01:19
DaskreechWell if it works in the same distro with a live Cd it's a setting since it's the same version that is installed01:23
seawingI dont think that it has to do with the touch pad.  I suspect plasma but don't have any reason to back that up.01:24
seawingwhat other settings might effect this behavior?01:25
Daskreechit can't be plasma01:26
seawingok.01:27
DaskreechPlasma doesn't do anythign with focus. It would be kwin but unless you have your keyboard remapped I don't see any reason why kwin would be switching windows while you were typing01:27
Daskreechdoes it happen everytime you are doing a particular password?01:27
seawingno.  it hapens when I am typing an email in gmail, typing a document in libra office, typing a password for synaptic, typing a url in kunquror, etc.01:29
DaskreechDoes it always happen when you type a password in synaptic?01:30
seawingno, sometimes I can make it through the entire phrase before it loses focus.  sometimes I can type a couple sentenses before it happens, sometimes only a couple letters.01:31
Daskreechso it isn't jumping when you do something like press 'e' ?01:32
Daskreechor perhaps pressing two keys at the same time01:32
seawingI'll try that.01:33
DaskreechI'm looking to see if there may be some setting I've overlooked01:36
seawingno. I just tried going through the keyboard and it did it on y so I started over and the next time ie did it on - and the next time I made it all the way to n,01:37
Daskreechwait the installer will run updates as it installs won't it >_<01:37
seawing?01:37
Daskreechcan you pastebin  ps aux ?01:37
seawingnot sure where that is.01:38
Daskreech!pastebin01:38

Daskreechopen a konsole and type sudo apt-get install pastebinit && ps aux | pastebinit01:39
DaskreechIt will give you a url just paste that URL back here01:39
seawingI am typing from my desktop.  I will open this in the laptop.01:40
Daskreechok01:41
seawing_http://paste.ubuntu.com/824660/01:45
seawinganything interesting there?01:48
DaskreechNot seeing anything that strikes me as stealing focus01:49
Daskreech Granted Kwin is very good at not handing over focus01:49
DaskreechDo you ever lose focus without typing on the keyboard?01:49
seawingyou know it even does it whin I click on the k menu and am browsing for something.01:50
DaskreechDo you know where it loses focus to?01:50
seawingbecause the k menu closes when you lose focus it is obvious.01:50
Daskreechand the mouse is over the kmenu at that point?01:51
seawingyes. I can't figure out where it goes. it will do it when there is only one window open.01:51
DaskreechWhich suggests the desktop. Do you have the desktop in your alt+tab listing?01:57
seawingI don't understand.01:57
DaskreechIf you press alt+tab is your desktop one of the options in the list?01:58
seawingno01:58
seawingif all windows are closed alt tab does nothing01:58
Daskreechah that might be useful if it loses focus you could hold alt+tab to see what grabbed the focus. if it's consistently the desktop then perhaps you have a rogue plasmoid abusing dbus?01:59
Daskreechyou can add it in with alt+F2 -> switcher01:59
seawingok, so I will open several windows and see what happens.01:59
Daskreechor you can add in the desktop :)02:05
seawingI don't follow what you mean about the alt+f2 switcher, but suddenly I cannot recreate the problem.  I dont think I changed anything.02:07
Daskreechseawing: alt=tab switcher02:07
Daskreech alt+f2 is the krunner02:07
DaskreechAlt+tab02:07
ScottyKgreetings! On the netbook version, how do you change/edit an icon?02:10
seawingI am going to restart it and see if the problem comes back.02:10
seawingTHank you for your help by the way.  will come back to it later.02:11
DaskreechScottyK: right click? :-)02:13
DaskreechProbably long click02:13
ScottyK Daskreech - no effect. If I could find something simular to the kickoff launcher, I could get it. But can't find anything like that in the netbook02:16
DaskreechYou just want to edit an icon?02:17
Daskreechactually #plasma might be a good place to ask02:17
ScottyKDaskreech - yes. One of the programs I use in WINE has a "?" for the icon. I'd rather it just have the wine goblet icon02:18
DaskreechCheck in #plasma I think02:19
ScottyKDaskreech - Roger that, thanks!02:20

ironfroggyi have not. i dont really notice it much, so i never took the initiative02:54
ironfroggyprobably because i use the menu so incredibly rarely02:55

DaskreechThat should help03:20
rufsketch1Daskreech right, I know. I'm asking ahead of time if it will replace the old version instead of just installing the new version on top of it03:20
DaskreechWell the person doing that PPA is doing it in preparation of having MySQL 5.5 on Ubuntu so I would think that it's a inplace upgrade03:21

ashesapt-get and apper seem to be out of sync... i can do an 'apt-get update', and then install a new package, and then apper _always_ complains after about security updates. am i doing things wrong?06:16
ashesi could have eliminated some variables, like do an apper update first, but i don't think that will have an influence06:17
ashesi assume apper and apt-get both use the same database, yes?06:17
ashesis there something else i should use, than apt-get, to install new packages with? i prefer command-line06:19
hateballwell apper only checks so often, but if you do a manual check with it after you've installed using apt-get it should report correct06:26
ashesdoes 'apt-get install' perform any update to my local database?06:27
ashesoriginally i would do an 'apt-get install', and a minute later i would have a ton of updates from apper. thinking that i was installing old packages, i started doing 'apt-get update' before 'apt-get install', but this problem with apper hasn't gone away06:29
ashesit's more than a coincidence that apper reports that i need updates every time i use 'apt-get install'06:30
ashesit's always unrelated packages06:30
ashesi just installed lm-sensors, and apper wants to update xorg related packages06:31
ashesi might simply be doing things wrong06:31
ashesis what i'm doing an acceptable/efficient way to install new packages and maintain my system?06:32
ashesi have a good understanding of linux, but not kubuntu specifically. i just learned apper is a kde app a few minutes ago06:34
ashesi'm new to ubuntu aswell06:34

ironfroggyafter my update to 11.10 i no longer get notifications from gtk applications properly, they come up as plain X dialogs instead, and i can't find a way to even turn them off. what might have broken in the update that i could look into?15:11
BluesKajironfroggy,  reset your package manager repository , and be sure to enable canonical partners15:13
BluesKajthen update and upgrade , ironfroggy15:13
txomonhi, which is the minimal package to install all the kubuntu desktop without installing kdm?15:14
ironfroggyBluesKaj: thanks, but i'm not sure where to do that exactly. i thought you were referring to some things the update might have disabled in sources.list but i dont see anything mentioning canonical15:16
ironfroggythat is, nothing that isnt already enabled.15:16
BluesKajironfroggy,  which kubuntu version ?15:17
ironfroggyBluesKaj: 11.10, just upgraded from 11.0415:18
BluesKajbest to open your package manager to do the changes, ironfroggy , the manager will add the deb to sources.list15:20
BluesKajironfroggy,  I recommend synaptic , it's the easiest to use for editing IMO15:21
ironfroggyBluesKaj: i dont use any package manager, i have always used apt-get directly15:21
ironfroggyBluesKaj: i'm still not sure what i'm actually trying to accomplish, via a package manager or directly.15:22
ironfroggyall my packages are up to date, i've got the canonical repositories included.15:22
BluesKajironfroggy,  well lately when upgrading , the sources.list is no longer updated with the canonical partners and 3rd part software sources , as previously...the devs want ppl to use the package manager since trying to appeal to GUI type users15:23
BluesKajok ironfroggy run sudo dpkg --configure -a , no output means no errors15:24
ironfroggyno errors then15:24
BluesKajok , ironfroggy , try an update15:25
ironfroggyhave already done so, and just did it again15:25
BluesKajironfroggy,  pastebin your upgrade errors15:26
txomonSo anyone knows here about kubuntu-desktop without the kdm?15:27
ironfroggyBluesKaj: i dont have any upgrade errors15:27
ironfroggythere is nothing to upgrade, i just did a dist-upgrade so everything is up to date.15:27
Torchtxomon: probably need to try something like kdelibs and the base and workspace packages for kde15:27
BluesKajironfroggy,  err I mean update of course15:28
Torchtxomon: also, you could install kdm and just carry on using a different login manager, but i'm sure you're aware of that15:28
ironfroggyBluesKaj: also no errors15:29
txomonTorch: I thought about installing kubuntu-desktop, but that is now what I was looking for15:29
BluesKajironfroggy,  if you don't have any gtk apps that need updating/upgrading then the notifier won't notify15:29
txomonTorch: also thought about kde-plasma-desktop15:30
ironfroggyBluesKaj: do you mean the triggers that setup notifications from gtk apps to the KDE notifications happen on install or update of those gtk app packages?15:30
Torchtxomon: i'm afraid i can't tell you off the top of my head how these packages are laid out and you can just look that up yourself as well, don't need me to do it ;-)15:31
BluesKajironfroggy,  yes if you have the package manager notfier turned on15:31
Torchtxomon: my advice would be install kubuntu-desktop and set whatever login manager suits you. or try kdm, it's actually very good.15:32
txomonTorch: I already tried kubuntu-desktop package, but having installed kdm, is much more weighty than lightdm15:32
ironfroggyBluesKaj: how can i make sure i have that enabled?15:34
BluesKajtxomon, a login manager isn't a big deal , just use one or the other15:34
BluesKajironfroggy,  check muon or apper whichever  default package mangers you have installed15:34
Torchtxomon: iirc kdm is a few hundred _kilobytes_ big, is it not?15:35
eeanmis there a kubuntu repo somewhere with PublicTransport packaged?15:35
txomonTorch: yes, but interacts with my system some way, I have had quite real problems with it. Each time I boot the computer, it starts with one of them15:36
Torchtxomon: like, for instance?15:37
txomonTorch: lightdm lxdm kdm15:37
txomongoes around those three15:37
Torchtxomon: no, i was referring to the problems you had with kdm... which were those?15:37
txomonTorch: I don't like it ;)15:38
FloodBotK3!netsplit15:38

txomonthe idea is that the *dm interact between them15:38
Torchtxomon: they do?15:39
BluesKajtxomon,  if you're going to run kubuntu desktop , run kdm ...it's only there for the time you login15:39
ironfroggyBluesKaj: i'm slightly confused now, actually, but also very sorry to keep being dense about this. what does this problem have to do with the package managers, exactly?15:40
txomonBluesKaj: but I want _just_ to use lightdm15:40
txomonbut ok15:40
txomonI will install kubuntu-desktop15:41
txomonhope the problem was with lxdm15:41
BluesKajtxomon,  well if lightdm doesn't work then you have to make a choice15:41
txomonBluesKaj: it does work perfectly15:41
txomonkubuntu crashes15:41
Torchtxomon: i would appreciate if you just could tell us what the _problem_ really is you're trying to solve.15:42
Torchtxomon: is it weight? bugs? or just weird preferences?15:42
txomonTorch: let the user choose between gnome and kde15:42
BluesKajironfroggy,  the package manager now also edits the sources.list , but doesn't update the repos listed there when you upgrade for some reason it's being neglected.15:42
txomonwithout installing superfluous packages15:43
Torchtxomon: don't use kubuntu if that is top of your list.15:43
txomonit is like installing lubuntu-core15:43
txomonthere is not a kubuntu-core15:44
txomonjust kubuntu-desktop15:44
BluesKajironfroggy,  however when you update the repos in the package manager , it's actually the app that apt and dpkg look at for the sources15:44
ironfroggyalso, wth15:44
ironfroggysuddenly i'm getting notifications from pidgin15:45
ironfroggyi dont know what i did that made a difference.15:45
ironfroggybut its not KDE notifications still... halfway there maybe15:45
BluesKajironfroggy,  after that dpkg looks at the sources.list for any ppas etc that you may have added  manually15:46
txomonso, my question, is : "Is there any minimal package containing the desktop, and not kdm etc" ?15:47
Tm_Ttxomon: just the desktop, no apps, tools etc?15:49
Tm_Tthere's package "plasma-desktop" that provides you that desktop and the panels and (basic) widgets15:50
txomontm_T, no kdm, just no kdm15:51
Tm_Ttxomon: then no15:53

sky100how to refresh in kubuntu17:17
Daskreechsky100: refresh what?17:17
Daskreech Welcome to Kubuntu :)17:18
sky100refresh the page itself17:21
sky100 im on xchat , suddenly it hanged17:21
sky100so i had to close the programme itself17:21
sky100& start it all over17:22
EvilResistancesky100, refresh the "page" itself?17:22
EvilResistancethat'd imply you're on a web site17:22
EvilResistanceif you mean restart a program, you just did it right17:22
DaskreechEvilResistance: no it doesn't17:22
EvilResistanceDaskreech, given they stated "xchat" the term "page" does not apply17:23
DaskreechApplications can have pages without being in the interwebs :)17:23
DaskreechChannel might be a better term :)17:23

sky100no not in xchat17:24
EvilResistancesky100, firefox?17:24
ktmiradioirc://irc.freenode.net/#rivendell17:24
Daskreechsky100: Though if Xchat is hung (i.e. doesn't respond to anything) then trying ot refresh it won't make a difference. Since it's not responding17:24
sky100im speaking on the KUBUNTU os17:24
Daskreechsky100: depends on the application in question. Konversation doesn't have a refresh pers e17:25
Daskreechthough if you flip to a different channel and flip back then it will redraw the view17:25
sky100Daskreech, : i was just searching for a refresh option in KUBUNTU17:26
Daskreechsky100: Ah for the whole screen?17:26
sky100yup17:26
Daskreechalt+shift+F12 would work17:26
sky100cool17:26
DaskreechTecnically that turns desktop effects on and off17:26
sky100ok ty Daskreech17:26
Daskreechbut it also redraws the whole screen17:26
sky100i see17:27
sky100as the Xchat suddenly hanged , so i wanted to close the programme but it was not even getting closed..17:27
sky100so I had restart the computer17:28
sky100i had to *17:28
EvilResistancehmm... i wonder if that's anything similar to what happens on my systems when sectors start dying en masse...17:29
EvilResistancesince i have random hangs when my hard drive isheaded to its death...17:29
Daskreechsky100: could you open a new program?17:29
sky100Daskreech, : yeah i can17:29
sky100as I started the pc17:30
sky100re*17:30
Daskreechsky100: if you click the X button and wait 30 or so seconds then the program will give you the option to close it17:30
sky100ok17:30
DaskreechIf that still doesn't work you can press alt+ctrl+Esc to get the Kill Cursor17:30
DaskreechClick on anything and it will kill it17:30
sithlord48hello #kubuntu!17:31
DaskreechEvilResistance: Possibly. if it's the same sector dying then the same program will always hang. If it's your RAM dying well then you get disco balls of lights and fury17:31
DaskreechHi sithlord4817:31
sithlord48whats going on today out there in kubuntu land?17:32
sky100Daskreech,  i tried that Kill cursor17:32

DaskreechPress esc to cancel the Kill Cursor17:33
sky100yup17:33
Daskreechdon't click on the desktop :)17:33
sky100got back17:34
Daskreechsithlord48: KDE 4.8!17:34
sithlord4812.04 alpha over here17:34
DaskreechEvilResistance: I had blue electricity shoot out the back of the powersupply. No Smoke yet17:34
sithlord48on my netbook , running so very nice (11.10 on desktop w/ kde 4.8 too)17:34
Daskreechsithlord48: Well then install KDE 4.9 :-p17:34
EvilResistanceDaskreech, i was working on a client's computer, and was going to power-test the power supply so I had it open (I am trained to work on them), and one of the big capacitors explodified right in my face17:35
sithlord48thats bad.17:35
DaskreechHa! take that degree!! I laugh in the face of paper!17:35
DaskreechHopefully you were not close to it when it did that17:36
Daskreechclay type capacitors can be really sharp17:36

sithlord48yes we replace lots of parts @ my job cause of failed caps. but no one ever wants to listen to me when i say its a cap solder a new one on and save the <insane board price>17:40
Daskreechsky100: Sure :) anything else you would like to know?17:41
sky100will try to know a lot , Daskreech , but as for now its all ok17:42
sky100ty for your co-operation17:42
sky100im all new to whole LINUX stuff17:42
sithlord48its ok we were all new at some point17:43

sky100oh , yea sithlord4817:43
sithlord48don't treat it like a windows machine , and learn anew :D17:43
sky100ty for kind words17:43
Daskreechsky100: welcome to Linux and KDE as well :)17:44
sky100yeah.. thats what is the first thing to learn...17:44
EvilResistancesithlord48, you do have to be careful with some of those things... soldering a new cap onto an already-failed capacitor can be bad sometimes17:44
EvilResistancenamely due to the capacitor needing replacing17:44

Daskreechwell make a VM with 300 Megs of RAM then. Not sure what you can do to playwith that but you can do a headless LInux for example19:09
Daskreechsohussain: What are you backing up?19:09
sohussainbasically i would like to create a backup of my local Os i.e. Kubuntu 11.10, i have seperated my "Home" to another partition, so the backup should be small enough19:11

sohussaincould you recommend one which would be appropriate to create a one time backup, which could be restored if ever my OS blows up?19:14
sohussaini.e. backup to maybe a new parition or external USB drive19:15
Daskreech!cloning19:15
ubottuTo replicate your packages selection on another machine (or restore it if re-installing), you can type « aptitude  --display-format '%p' search '?installed!?automatic' > ~/my-packages », move the file "my-packages" to the other machine, and there type « sudo xargs aptitude --schedule-only install < my-packages ; sudo aptitude install » - See also !automate19:15

heinkel_111hey, just a question: in kubuntu, what is the recommended file location for files to be shared between many users?20:34
heinkel_111i am configuring a media server daemon20:34
heinkel_111need to share media files such as music, video, pictures on the local network20:34
heinkel_111the media server runs on its own user name (as a daemon usually does afaik(20:35
Daskreechin /usr ?20:37
DaskreechUnless you are updating it often then /var20:38
heinkel_111Daskreech: would you stuff the music files into a /usr/media/music, for example?20:39
heinkel_111or /usr/share/media/music?20:39
emWhat is the difference between kubuntu-restricted-extras and kubuntu-restricted-addons ?20:39
DaskreechI'd do it under share20:39
Daskreech!info kubuntu-restricted-addons20:40
ubottukubuntu-restricted-addons (source: ubuntu-restricted-addons): Commonly used restricted packages for Kubuntu. In component multiverse, is optional. Version 8 (oneiric), package size 2 kB, installed size 36 kB20:40
Daskreechem: I think they are the same20:40
Kimlarouxif the media server runs on it's own username, why not place the stuff into it's home directory?20:40
em!info kubuntu-restricted-extras20:41
ubottukubuntu-restricted-extras (source: ubuntu-restricted-extras): Commonly used restricted packages for Kubuntu. In component multiverse, is optional. Version 56 (oneiric), package size 2 kB, installed size 36 kB20:41
emthey seem different.20:41
emone is version 8 and one is version 5620:41
Kimlarouxem, http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/kubuntu-restricted-addons20:42
Kimlaroux"You should not install this package directly, but instead install the kubuntu-restricted-extras package."20:42
heinkel_111Daskreech: alternative options, keep the files in home directory of each individual user and make them accessible to a group which can be read by the mediaserver daemon. Is that more tidy?20:42
emKimlaroux: oh wow. I wonder why20:43
Kimlarouxbah, this is Ubuntu, it's often better not to ask about those things20:43
Daskreechem: I think they just changed the name of the package and kept the old one around in case anyone is doing updates20:44
Daskreechheinkel_111: If it's an aggregate solution I suppose you could do that20:44
Daskreechem: so compatibilty for people upgrading from old LTS releases20:45
emWhy is kubuntu-restricted-extras installing all this lib32 stuff when my machine is a 64 bit machine?20:45
Kimlarouxare you running 64 bits ubuntu?20:46
emKimlaroux: I sure hope so. How can I be sure?20:47

Kimlarouxuname -a20:47
emthat's what Ive got there ^20:47
Kimlarouxmeh, then it's installing the 32 bits libs because there arent's 64 bits libs available20:48
emKimlaroux: but will those conflict with my 64 bit libs?20:48
KimlarouxI don't know, I try to avoid installing 32 bit stuff20:48
emKimlaroux: I dont want to install kubuntu-restricted-extras and have it break my ability to install drivers and such later on.20:48
Daskreechem: it won't conflict20:50
DaskreechSome things like Skype are "64bit" but use all 32 Bit libs so it installs them in parallel20:50
Kimlarouxbah it's probably installing media-related libs, so it shouldn't give you system-related problems20:50
DaskreechIn any case having both isn't really an issue other than space and memory if they are being used20:50
emis there a way to get most of kubuntu-restricted-extras but not ms-corefonts ?20:56
emwhy do i need ms-corefonts?20:56
macoso if you open a Word doc in LibreOffice the fonts are the same size and it doesn't reflow the text, breaking formatting20:57
macobut nowadays with teh Liberation fonts you can avoid that anyway20:57
emmaco: well that's a very good answer thanks.20:58
emmaco: Do you think there is any particular worry about installing Kubuntu restricted extras even though it will install many lib32* on my 64 bit machine?21:01
macono21:02
macohaving 32bit libs in addition to 64bit ones is how you run non-64-native applications, like flash21:02
