DaskreechHello02:51
RoeyDaskreech:  which version of KDE ar eyou runniing? And of Kubuntu?02:51
DaskreechKDE 4.8 on Fedora 1602:52
Roeyah o0k02:52
Roeydidn't know fedora 16 had kde 4.8 natively on it02:52
Roeylike, kubuntu only has it through the PPAs02:52
DaskreechSimilar for Fedora02:54
DaskreechUnless you are a rolling release distro you pretty much don't make crazy changes like that by default02:55
bfigDaskreech, what is safe video mode?02:58
bfigsorry i had to run some errands02:58
Daskreechbfig: when you boot the CD You have the option to boot or boot to safe video mode which takes drivers out of the picture02:59
DaskreechLong as a you have a processor and memory it should pretty much work02:59
bfigDaskreech, how can i select that option? i don't see it. i only have 'normal' or 'mem check'02:59
DaskreechOh? Hmm02:59
bfigalso, kms is automagic apparently on newer kernels02:59

Daskreechorated: NAS = Network Attached Storage?07:04
Daskreechorated: if you right click any Folder -> Properties -> Share07:07
DaskreechIt's built in already07:07
oratedDaskreech: No, I didn't mean that.07:23
oratedUmm07:23
oratedDaskreech:  I'm not sure if I require NAS to have frequent snapshots of Linux/Windows installations and to have a common server for all data to be accessible from both Windows and linux07:27
DaskreechNo you just need storage though a NAS is not a bad way to have all of that07:28
Daskreechand if you have one already then you can just make use of it07:28
DaskreechMy friend does the same thing with a hard drive just dedicated to storage07:30
oratedI already have ssh and nfs setup with which I can access/administer one system from another. But I don't have a common place to all the data organised in one place or to keep regular backup/snapshots of OSs in use.. so is NAS setup in Samba right for this?07:31
oratedAh-ok07:31
DaskreechYes or sftp since you have ssh setup already07:32
oratedYes, I use that. I got new 720GB HDD so was considering it for backup and such07:33
oratedI'm quite confused with NFS and NAS atm07:33
Daskreechhow so?07:35
oratedI guess its not different how NFS/NAS can be used to regularly take snapshots of system, right?07:35
oratedwait, one is for dedicated storage, other for sharing...07:36
oratedDaskreech: What do you suggest?07:49
DaskreechNFS is a file system07:50
Daskreechit allows a remote computer to be used as if it is a hard drive07:50
DaskreechNAS is a  network attached storage. It's just a hard drive that is connected to a network interface07:51
zombieomgwtfbbqlanyone got any suggestion on how to get the ccsm to launch the gui or show in desktop effect07:51
zombieomgwtfbbqlshow water effect*07:52
DaskreechYou can put NFS on a NAS if you like then the Storage will be mounted as a directory in your computer07:52
oratedDaskreech: Yes, was going to ask that07:53
oratedDaskreech: Do you use any script/package to regular backup data to NAS?07:54

qbitVako: I'm not an expert, but you may need to investigate if you need to blacklist the rt2800usb so that you can load the st2870sta that BluesKaj has working16:27
BluesKajVako,  open your /etc/modules with root permissions, add rt2870sta to the bottom of the list16:29
Vakoima do this http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-install-rt2870-chipset-based-usb-wireless-adapter.html16:29
BluesKajqbit,  yeah , that's a thought16:29
Vakoand let you know16:29
qbitif it were to come to blacklist needed to force the rt2800usb not to load you can create a 99-local.conf file under /etc/modprobe.d with blacklist rt2800usb on a line as contents16:32
qbitwhat I do not know is if/whether all 4 variants of rt2800xxx would be needed, I simply do not know this16:34
qbitbut I'd only do the one to start16:35
BluesKaj qbit , /etc/modprobe/blacklist.conf16:37
qbitthat's good, I just tend to use a .local as a personal preference16:38
qbitwhat's in mine currently is the couple of things I needed to get a PCI parallel port card to print16:39
qbitbut yeah - blacklisting is probably better done there, for sure16:41
BluesKaji have to check the wifi pc's blacklist to see what's there , just to be sure16:41
BluesKajthink i blacklisted the 2800 drivers on previous tries to get the usb wifi stick working16:43
qbitBluesKaj: I bet if he can dump the driver that doesn't work and replace it with the one you've confirmed to work he has a chance16:43
BluesKajqbit,  I'm not entirelu sure that driver actually works , think maybe the default kernel driver is overriding it , but i'm not sure yet ...I have some to do , but I'll check the other pc to find out16:44
BluesKajhave some stuff to do, BBL16:45
qbitI understand - I remember some reading a while back that left me with the impression these drivers were not completely done yet16:45
BluesKajqbit,  oddly enought there aren't rt2800 driver blackisted anywhere in /etc/modprobe.d16:56
Linux_Jonesso i have two laptops, this one is kubuntu, and i have one with ubuntu hooked up to my big screen tv, i wanna be able to play movies and music  and whatnot on the one on the tv but control it from this one,  is there a way to do this?  they are both running 11.10  and are connected via wireless network17:00
qbitBluesKaj: so just adding it to modules may be all that's need, and it attaches to the right one without any blacklisting needed17:01

BarkingFishGuys, can I get some advice please?  I took pulseaudio off my machine a while back because it breaks some of my software and doesn't work properly for me.  The problem is that one of the progs I now want to install uses pulseaudio, and if I put it on, it's gonna break all the other stuff I want.19:02
BarkingFishIs there any way of limiting pulseaudio to only run with the applications I want it to, rather than across the whole session?19:02
James147BarkingFish: no, but I think you can do it the other way, stop it from running on a perticualr application19:15
James147"pasuspender - Temporarily suspend PulseAudio"19:16
BarkingFishHm. So I might be able to leave it running with mumble, but disable it for audacity...19:16
James147^^ however I think you will get no audio from application (but the one you use that command on) while using that command19:17
BarkingFishThat's the biggest issue for me, is that it breaks my sound inputs when I run audacity. I can hear perfectly, but trying to hit a mic input is nigh on impossible.19:17
James147^^ never played with a mic on it, but I would be suprised is there wasnt a way to make it work19:18
James147BarkingFish: what version of kubuntu are you on?19:18
BarkingFish11.1019:18
BarkingFishI need the mic inputs working on audacity, it's what I record spoken articles for wikipedia on.19:19
James147BarkingFish: have you rtied: http://askubuntu.com/questions/29185/how-do-i-setup-audacity-and-pulseaudio-to-record-from-a-line-in  :?19:22
BarkingFishyeah, problem is that this isn't a line in19:23

dmattGuest36460: and just ask question, otherwise we do not know if anyone can help you :)20:17
Guest36460ok my question: How can i install a programm in linux?20:27
Guest36460i downloaded a shell script for netbeans but how i can install it?20:27
lnxslckGuest36460, just run it20:29
lnxslckGuest36460, sh script.sh20:29
dmattGuest36460: normally, you should install programs through package manager ( menu Application/System/ Muon Package manager)20:33
dmattonly after you did not find what you want there you should use scripts or alternative possibilities to install20:34
dmattespecially if you are beginner20:34
BluesKajwell, the rt2870sta driver no longer works with my belkin usb wifi stick , a temp connection worked for a couple of hrs , I deliberately rebooted to see if the driver install would hold , but no joy :(20:39

almoxarifekde for sure, gnome has lost its appeal for me, I wanted a system with some since of configuration, gnome decided to go 'simpleton', and it may be had to believe but there is less overhead in ram with kubuntu, I use the plasma-desktop22:39
