jcgsHi :) does anyone know what identities are for in kmail? I've got 3 email accounts which I'd like it to check, do i need different identites for them?00:34
claydohjcgs: no, you can use the same identity for more than 100:42
jcgsclaydoh: what's the difference between doing that, and having separate identities?00:43
claydohjcgs: i use identities for each of my emails as I use them for different purposes, so i have different signatures, different names, etc00:44
claydohone has my fullname, while another uses my nickname for xample00:44
jcgsok :) thanks, but does it mean that things are sorted differently for example, or auto selecting the right address to send from00:45
claydoheach email usually has its own inbox, or can be set up that way00:46
claydohhmm00:47
claydohi think you pick a default mail address00:48
claydohbeen a while since I used a single identity00:48
claydohhmmm00:48
claydohreplies are sent using the originating email,  not sure how  you compose using a particular address00:52

Rokixzhi, any discussions about kmail? :D00:57
RokixzI cannot view inbox in my imap, only spam :D00:58
RokixzI get errors like "Unable to append item flags."00:58
jcgsCheers claydoh, I went for the different identites anyway, seems it's pretty easy to switch e-mail accounts between than01:05
claydohyes, jcgs it is01:05
claydohRokixz: not sure on that error, but if you haven't I do suggest upgrading to kde 4.8, which will fix a lot of error messages, problems in kmail01:07
claydohtho not necessarily all01:08
claydohi have not seen that problem myself01:08
claydohRokixz: filtering may be broken, may want to try disabling that to see if it a cause of that for you01:10
Rokixzclaydoh, I did upgrade to 4.8, I'll try to disable the filtering :)01:10
claydohwost case scenario Rokixz would be to delete and recreate the imap account :(01:11
Rokixzok, just recreated gmail acc01:12
Rokixzand still received that notification01:12
Rokixzand where should I disable filtering?01:13

skierpageI have a bunch of files on my Windows laptop next to this Kubuntu machine. What's the easiest way to network them so I can directly copy them to directories on Kubuntu? How do I turn on a ssh/sftp daemon, or export a home directory as a network share?09:40
skierpageSystem Settings > Sharing doesn't have anything.09:41
skierpageSearch help.ubuntu.com for network sharing "11.10" coughs up nothing useful. It's so trivially easy from Sharing in Mac OS X...09:45
skierpageI guess I install openssh-server and f*** around with `sshd [-46DdeiqTt] ` <sigh>09:54
ts2or, enable sharing on the windows box and just copy the files over09:56
skierpagets2, good point, though when I've enable folder sharing on Windows Vista the disk grinds away for ages, dunno which would take longer ;-)09:59
ts2well windows doesn't use NFS by default, so you'd need to install putty to share files from windows if you want to use ssh10:01
skierpagets2, I already have WinSCP (based on Putty I think). Pleasant surprise: I installed openssh-server package, `sudo service ssh restart`, and sftp me@<localIP> works!10:05

abhijeethi guys.. recently i switched from ubuntu to Kubuntu...12:23
Mamarokand?12:23
abhijeetI am stuck with a basic task.. I am not able to add desktop icons in kubuntu12:23
abhijeetwhen i dragging and dropping icons from kmenu, it is not working..12:23
Mamarokabhijeet: if you go to the menu, right click on the application you want to add an icon for and there you have the option12:24
abhijeetMamarok: I is adding the icons to the desktop but to the desktop folder.12:25
abhijeetMamarok: how can i add the icons to the desktop folder.12:25
Mamarokyou can't add icons to the desktop folder, that is showing the content of a particular folder only12:25
Mamarokadd the icons to the desktop, and in the desktop folder options choose to display the desktop12:26
Mamarokbut it doesn't really make much sense that way :)12:26
abhijeetMamarok: okay....12:27
abhijeetMamarok: another doubt.. how can i resize the icons size in the desktop??12:39
Mamarokhover over it, there is a option bar appearing, the icon on top allows you to resize12:43
abhijeetMamarok: okay.. actually it is already smallest... check this link: http://picpaste.com/snapshot1-WCtfPlye.png12:48
abhijeetmy icons are not properly aligned..12:48
abhijeetI faced the same issue some time back12:48
abhijeetMamarok: anyway I can align them properly??12:52
yofelabhijeet: there is a grid desktop option as desktop type, maybe that helps. I've never used it though12:55
abhijeetyofel: where is that option?12:56
yofelright click on desktop -> Layout:12:56
yofeler, settings -> Layout:12:56
abhijeetyofel: it's not there.. I can only see 1 View 2. Mouse action12:57
yofelabhijeet: at the View part, there's a drop down box for the Layout12:57
yofelunless that has changed since 4.7...12:57
abhijeetyofel: yes.. i think it has changed in 4.8..12:58
photonhi. does kubuntu support 3d video files if I have a 3d video card/monitor?12:59
abhijeetI am able to resize icons by hand but I d't think its correct process.12:59
abhijeetyofel: why this KDE is so hard to use...12:59
yofelit was there in 4.7 though, possibly called differently12:59
abhijeetI am not even able to do the basic tasks.12:59
yofelI'm fine with it - and I have the icons in the panel anyway12:59
abhijeetyofel: panel layout is missing from that list13:00
yofeluh, the panel settings are in the panel settings. As every panel can have it's own settings13:00
yofelit's not everything in the same window13:01
abhijeetok13:01
yofelfor application I often use I usually just stick them on the panel by right clicking their taks manager item and selecting "show a launcher when not running"13:03
yofelwin7 style13:03
abhijeetyofel: I think most settings are there in the folder view..13:03
abhijeetyofel: let me check if that works13:03
yofelin which folder view btw. - the folder view widget, or do you have your desktop type set to show the desktop folder contents?13:05
yofelhm yeah, the grid desktop can align stuff13:07

James147Xevios: That would be a very long FAQ :) anything more specific you want to know?19:30
arshinatorBlueKaj, after killing that process 2606, this happend "sudo apt-get install vlc19:30
arshinatorE: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. "19:30
XeviosAll my life worked with windows...and ЭВМ(19:30
James147arshinator: run what it suggests19:32
James147arshinator: but my guess is unattended upgrades was running in the background... normally before killing dpkg you should wait a while to see if it will finish19:32
arshinatorJames147: thanks, it got working :)19:33
XeviosJames147 ohhh. it will be long. So, by the way, when i tried to update kubuntu, i chose all updates.=_=And stucked in 47% After reboot i lost wifi-bluetooth drivers. Now they're working but...i'm afraid of new updates)19:34
James147Xevios: run "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade && sudo apt-get install kubntu-desktop" in a terminal and tell us when it errors :)19:35
arshinatorXevios, same happened with me, i had to install kubuntu again.....but why update? it works fine without updates19:35
James147Xevios: muon is known for getting stuck druing updates, its best to use other packagemanagers to upgrade19:36
James147arshinator: secutiry patches and bug fixes ^^ ... you shouldnt not update your system :p19:37
pvivekwhich is the best desktop recorder for kde?19:38
arshinatorJames147: muon is corrupted in my system i guess, cuz when i start it, it crashes everytime....which is the best package manager u would suggest?19:40
Xeviosthx.I fixed it in another way, in recovery checked all packeges.19:40
XeviosBy the way. I wanted to instal google chrome....19:40
XeviosBut i cant.19:40
James147arshinator: apper (kpackagekit) use to work well, though I tend to use commandline19:41
James147Xevios: install chromium form the repos... its basically the same as google chrome but with out the branding (and a few closed features)19:41
XeviosYeah. But i have all my pass'es with tabs in google acc.19:42
XeviosOh19:43
XeviosThx19:43
XeviosWorking19:43
asfyxiaxevios: do sudo apt-get install chromium-browser in the terminal19:43
James147Xevios: it shares most of the code base with google chrome... it also has the sync feature... if just a few minor thing taht are missing (like embedded flash)19:43
Xevioshow i can install *deb* packeges19:52
Xevios?19:52
Xeviosby clicking?19:52
asfyxiaxevios: if you try to install google chrome from a .deb file, you don need to. It's in the repos, try chrome-browser.19:54
James147Xevios: you should beable to click it in dolphin, or you can run "sudo dpkg -i <file>"19:54
Xeviosasfyxia , skype.19:55
arshinatorJames147: i am trying to "su"...but when i do that it asks me for a password, but the password which i gave at the time of installing kubuntu is not being taken and it says authentication failure. any  idea?19:55
szal!su | arshinator19:56
ubottuarshinator: sudo is a command to run command-line programs with superuser privileges ("root") (also see !cli). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information. For graphical applications see !gksu (GNOME, Xfce), or !kdesudo (KDE). If you're unable to execute commands with sudo see: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo19:56
szal!root | arshinator19:56
ubottuarshinator: Do not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth... there is no root password. Then you will see that it is 'sudo' that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo19:56
arshinatorubottu | szal : actually i want to access the root directory....so i want to go su...but not able to do so19:58
ubottuarshinator: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)19:58
szalarshinator: what root directory?19:58
arshinatorszal: the root folder?19:58
arshinatori want to access that19:58
szaldefine 'access'19:58
James147arshinator: use "sudo -i" to get a root shell19:59
ARGHhhello, does anybody use avant-window-navigator on Kubuntu? I 've got problems with icons, probably i must install gnome icons...can anyone explain me how ?19:59
asfyxiaxevios: when you downloaded a .deb-file, you can install it with Ark20:00
pvivekkubuntu Software Updates stuck at 61% from more than an hour. any suggestions?20:00
James147asfyxia: um, no, ark dosnt install programs from debs... it can only extract archives (which debs are, but thats not how you should install progrmas)20:00
James147pvivek: kill it, run the update in a terminal20:01
Xeviosfuck him. update stucks mostly all time20:01
Xeviosafter this20:01
Xeviosyou can boot only in rec mode20:01
Xeviosafter checking .pkg files.20:01

arshinatorJames147 : i mean i want the administrative privileges20:02

hroi "anybody know" the command line to start up the window decoration config?20:02
James147arshinator: ??20:03
hroimy system settings pannel seems a bit sparse , and doesnt a have this config20:03
DarthFrogarshinator:  "sudo -i" gives you root privileges.  At that point, you *are* root.20:03
arshinatorJames147: well when i just write "su" in the terminal it asks me for the password, and when i supply it the password which i set for my login, it says authentication failure20:04
arshinatorso which password is it asking for that time20:04
DarthFrogarshinator: "su" requires a root account.  "sudo" doesn't.20:04
BluesKajarshinator, just use sudo20:04
pvivekJames147:thanks helped20:21

skierpageWhat's the command to update to Kubuntu 12.04 alpha 2?22:59
skierpagehttp://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?57044-Upgrading-11-10-to-12-04 suggests `sudo do-release-upgrade -f kde -d` , but after extracting precise.tar.gz, "can't load kde (No module named kde)"23:00
skierpageOh wait, it is upgrading, it popped up "Distribution Upgrade". It's a Gnome app with no mention of KDE or Kubuntu, but it's doing something...23:01
poyntzhi23:01
poyntzthere's no xorg.conf in oneric, so I was wondering, if I wanted to add a line to xorg.conf how do I do it?23:02
poyntzI want to add http://paste.kde.org/200018/23:03
skierpagepoyntz, I haven't tried it, but https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config ?23:04
skierpageThat's a poor explanation because you're already running X, so http://askubuntu.com/questions/4662/where-is-the-x-org-config-file-how-do-i-configure-x-there23:06
ts2poyntz: you should be able to add sections in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/23:06
ts2rather than creating an entire xorg.conf23:06
poyntzts2, skierpage : if I add http://paste.kde.org/200018/ to 50-vmmouse.conf - will this cause issues?23:10
poyntz50-vmmouse.conf is in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/23:12
ts2or just place it in another file, like /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/52-vbox.conf23:12
poyntzskierpage, ts2 - thanks :)23:15
poyntzskierpage, ts2 - do I need to restart X?23:16
poyntz- to get it to work23:16
ts2you'll want to log out, then choose "Restart the X Server" from the login menu (where it has the shutdown options)23:16
skierpagepoyntz, very likely23:16
poyntzalright, fingers crossed23:18
poyntzthanks for the help :D23:18
poyntzts2, skierpage : didn't have any luck :S23:31
poyntzI don't think X is looking at my new .conf file23:31
=== damaltor_ is now known as damaltor
skierpageSo poyntz, you just added that one bit to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d ? I guess next thing is to look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log contents.23:47
skierpagepoyntz, I know little, but it sounds like you can exit X (stop your window manager), run the command to generate a config, and see if it has the bit you added to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d, that might help debug.  And then you could use the new Xorg.conf file, though the directory of bits and pieces is more flexible.23:49
