=== Guest21792 is now known as jussi01 [20:00] g'day [20:00] still fighting with the keyboard volume knob issue. very annoying. [20:01] looking thru settings and mixers, it looks like the ALSA master volume has NO affect at all .. only PulseAudio volume has any affect [20:02] also, using the volume knob, it affects the PulseAudio volume and the std. headphone volume ... altho in such a limited range it's useless [20:02] SO ... what benefits does PulseAudio give me (why would I want to keep it) and what negatives would removing it have, if any? [20:02] i see also i can just disable it at startup to see if that makes any difference [20:04] also, i notice in the Session and Startup panel an "XFCE Volume Daemon (Daemon managing the volume multimedia keys and displaying volume notifications)" [20:04] i'm wondering if THAT could be the issue, and how i configure it? [20:06] reading up on PulseAudio, I learned that if I installed it on my win xp machine I could (potentially) send audio from my workstation TO my media server to output thru that ... which would be pretty damn cool [20:07] i've been considering running the Line-Out from my workstation to the Line-In of my media server for that very purpose! [20:07] I find it QUITE odd tho that the std. master volume control in the system mixer has NO influence on the system volume tho [20:15] oh .. and i DID ask about this over in #xubuntu too ... no help there really ...they directed me to some app called KeyTouch [20:16] my intuition tho tells me it's some inter-configuration issue between ALSA and PulseAudio ... which would (i think) make it an Ubuntu Studio issue [20:16] :D :D :D [21:00] YAY!! [21:01] fixed the keyboard volume knob issue!! via this page :: http://ulno.net/2011/04/16/mixer-control-with-multimedia-keys-und-multiple-soundcards-in-xfce4-on-debian-or-ubuntu/ [21:01] the active-card and sound-card settings were different ... i had to copy the setting from sound-card to active-card ... now it works! :D :D :D [21:09] XartaoX: http://imagebin.org/196269 [21:11] LOLZ [21:11] i share my solution in case you encounter others with similar problems ;) [21:11] took a good deal of reasearch [21:11] wait til you reboot and those change too ;) [21:12] noooooo!!! [21:13] i already logged out and back in .. changes stuck [21:13] cool :) [21:13] i also figured out (with help from #xubuntu) how to make my extended desktop settings stick on reboot [21:13] :D [21:13] only remaining problem is this whole unable-to-come-back-from-suspend thing [21:14] but for today? enuf trubl shooting! time to play with audio apps!!!! [21:14] question tho: which apps would i want to use to record my MIDI input from several synths plus a drum machine so I can record a final song out to audio I can put up on SoundCloud ? [21:16] i dont sleep or suspend desktops [21:16] JACK will *freak* if you sleep while its running [21:17] XartaoX: rosegarden, qtractor, ardour3... any sequencer really [21:17] righto [21:18] and i use LADI to route the MIDI from each synth/etc. I use TO the sequencer ? [21:19] then in multiple passes record IN the sequencer my MIDI input with a synth, then move on to another while the sequencer plays what I already recorded ... etc. etc ... [21:19] ?? [21:19] XartaoX: i just use jack connect [21:19] you can ust ladi or whatever [21:19] i like how LADI uses a graphical nodes routing setup [21:20] rosegarden or qtractor [21:20] XartaoX: sure.. use that if you like [21:20] rosegarden isn't installed .. been thinkin bout it [21:20] XartaoX: ask in #opensourcemusicians too [21:20] k [21:20] i do *very* little mide [21:20] though, qtractor and RG are the regulars [21:20] midi* [21:21] also ... i know yer trying to keep the base US install light, but you MIGHT want to consider including MyPaint in future releases. VERY nice digital painting app!! [21:21] XartaoX: its a DVD [21:21] i dont care [21:21] but, you have to stop somewhere [21:21] and you cant please everyone [21:22] if interested ... :: the solution to my extended desktop not being remembered was to add the script created by agrandr to my startup apps [21:22] XartaoX: feel free and join #ubuntustudio-devel [21:22] i get it. MyPaint is well worth it tho. i find it indispensible [21:22] maybe :D [21:22] XartaoX: nah.. you'll need to *do something to get that included [21:23] you can join that channel, and go to a meeting and suggest it [21:23] fair nuf [21:23] you can add it to the meetings agenda [21:23] you can join the mailing lists [21:23] im not saying it wont happen [21:23] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-devel [21:23] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-users [21:24] whelllll .. i'll hold off on that for now [21:24] XD [21:24] for example https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/Meetings/2012February19 [21:24] you add "id like to get paint in 12.04" [21:24] you show up [21:24] you say why [21:24] you try and get someone to put it in [21:25] im grinding some different axes myself [21:25] and again, you just have to stop somewher [21:25] e [21:25] XartaoX: but... i totally agree [21:25] thats a simple paint app that could really help [21:26] most useful with a tablet .. which, sadly, i do not yet have ... fine with a mouse too tho [21:26] my problem is: having USED an Intuos, i won't be happy with anything less ;) [21:26] Intuos, even smaller ones, are $$$$$!!!!! [21:27] i dont like tablets [21:28] ?!?!? you must not do any digital painting or photo-manipulation!! :P [21:28] i do what i need to do [21:28] just not on toys ;) [21:28] heh . . fair nuf [21:29] bamboo is a toy. Intuos is not. [21:29] i WISH i could afford one of those video-display tablets .. [21:29] * XartaoX makes a drooly mess all over the place [21:30] XartaoX: OH.. yeah those tablets [21:30] i have one of those [21:30] i was thinking like an ipad [21:31] oh. no. not an ipad [21:31] blah [21:31] i have an early wacom that i barely konw how to use [21:31] but i get the idea [21:31] i bet its handy [21:31] i dont do anything to warrant that [21:31] ja. intuos support rotation and angle as well as pressure [21:31] if you get the airbrush pen ... wow [21:31] but, im not a fan of the actually tiny toy talble thingies [21:32] me either. they're neeto, but that's about it [21:32] meh [21:32] i feel the same way about smartphones [21:32] yup [21:32] i ue my driod a lot [21:32] i just want my phone to be a phone, my mp3 player to be an mp3 player, and my camera to be a camera [21:32] but i always hate the web on it [21:33] with a 'smart-device', if it breaks, you lose all three at once [21:33] boooooo [21:33] XartaoX: i dont mind an all in one [21:33] i just hate having shite versions all stuck together [21:33] fair nuf [21:33] its like, a subpar experience on all the different parts :/ [21:33] i like the idea though [21:33] crushed seeds ain't doin it for me ... hope 'my guy' gets home ;) [21:33] maybe some day :) [21:33] XartaoX: lol [21:52] hmmm [21:52] why would Hydrogen have no MIDI input in LADI?? [21:59] WOW!! the latency is BEAUTIFUL!! perfect! control!! :D :D [22:07] XartaoX: maybe JACK midi to alsa-midi [22:07] i usually fire up a2jmidid [22:11] eh? [22:11] XD yer confusing me [22:23] OH! yer addressing why hydrogen has no midi input in ladi [23:12] .. i just discovered the whole 'editing the synth' portion of Yoshimi [23:12] HOLY CRAP!! [23:21] it's seriously gonna take some time to learn to use all these audio apps together properly [23:22] i STILL haven't figuresd out how to record what I'm doing with the synths [23:22] or at leasat not my actual MIDI inputs, so I can quantize them or otherwise adjust them .. say velocity or mod or bend [23:23] seeing as i don't actually HAVE a proper MIDI controller .. just the computer keyboard and my mouse
