I have an apt-mirror server which has updated now, with the normal things and debian-installer, running 11.10. I want to net install my computers on the network using a USB, everything work 100%, but there is no ubuntu desktop, i have to ssh in and tasksel multiselect ubuntu-dekstop. How do i get it to install ubuntu desktop? currently using kickstart and preseed together, but it does not install ubuntu desktop. my prese [07:20] ed.cfg tells it to install ubuntu-desktop [07:22] hmm... === Guest22249 is now known as armand-jhb [07:22] been a long time since I did a net install, never did it on Ubuntu before [07:22] those were the redhat days before fedora [07:22] can i swear? Thats how bad it is [07:22] does one have terminal access [07:23] unfortunately not [07:24] armand-jhb: I guess google is your friend [07:24] the whole installation happens, but just not ubuntu-desktop, in ky kickstart file i told it to install ssh-server... so at the end i have to ssh in and tasksel ubuntu-desktop [07:24] * inetpro sadly can't help searching and spending time on it now even if it sounds like an interesting exercise [07:24] i tried that.... my last resort was here [07:25] it is quite useful, but hell! Its allot of making sure of things, moving this editing that an all of that [07:25] http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-gui-on-ubuntu-11-04-natty-server.html [07:26] can that help you armand-jhb [07:27] inetpro, dont you get cli one servers? [07:29] in other tutorials they said to use @ ubuntu-desktop, but just going to try ubuntu-desktop in my ks file [07:29] kickstart fiel [07:30] i know nothing about servers but without a terminal have no idea how one can do anything [07:30] armand-jhb: when you figured it out please give us a short summary on how you did it [07:30] will do [07:31] * inetpro unfortunately has some work to do [07:31] cool [07:33] oohh... freenode got ddos'ed silly script kiddies [07:33] eish === morgs_ is now known as morgs [07:34] o/ mornings [07:35] lol new face [07:35] lo nuvolari [07:35] lo oom Kilos [07:36] armand-jhb: there 's an ubuntu-desktop package... if you can set your kickstart script to install ssh-server, why can't you tell it to install ubuntu-desktop? === sdehaan_ is now known as sdehaan [07:43] wb nlsthzn [07:44] hi abantu [07:47] I wonder if it is netsplits or my connection causing me to be on and off :/ [07:48] christel said there are attacks nlsthzn [07:48] didnt you see the message [07:48] silly scriptkitties [07:50] eish [07:50] hi tnt [07:50] I saw the message, was wondering if that was my reason for issues [07:50] things bad again today superfly__ [07:51] with a tail [07:51] yeah, look at my tail! [07:51] yeah nlsthzn when they have them dos attacks everything crashes [07:51] * nlsthzn_ will be offline then until the script kiddies are nuked... [07:51] oh my he missed that [07:51] eish === inetpro_ is now known as inetpro [07:52] hehe at least i dont get tailed then i would have to look in notes to see how to fix it [07:53] all that ghost stuff [07:54] Kilos: you don't like ghost stories? [07:54] ha ha ha [07:55] no man its the effort trying to find where i wrote down how to fix it [07:55] easier to go off and wait for timeout [07:55] 245secs [07:58] see, i can do that.... thanks, but i thought only tasksel can do that....... [07:58] question when mavericks support ends in 2 months does that mean one can no longer do sudo apt-get update for a new install [08:01] thats the important part [08:01] if everything is rsynced [08:24] armand-jhb: tasksel is for "tasks" - but tasks are not packages. fortunately there seems to be an "ssh-server" package, and I know there's an ubuntu-desktop package === superfly__ is now known as superfly [08:24] it worked! just finished it now [08:25] anyone want the specs of what the little trip was.... i can give you my documentation.... [08:25] armand-jhb: have you got a blog? [08:25] blogs are great for stuff like that [08:26] no... i dont.... but maybe i should try invest in that.... [16:03] are you interested in doing the LPI course that kbmonkey is doing [16:05] booyah! a productive day behind the back [16:05] hometime [16:05] o/ [16:05] Well I'm currently doing Linux+ but so I don't know if LPI would make more difference. [16:05] Hi nuvolari [16:05] go safe nuvolari [16:08] Bye Kilos [16:18] hallo oom kilos [16:18] hi tnt_ [16:19] how goes? [16:19] well ty and you tnt_ [16:20] almost time for my braai to start [16:21] yay [16:21] why you got this mixed up nick [16:22] im on a friend's (tnt) pc [16:23] aha [16:26] clever kid this armand, he uses xchat [16:32] hie all, any cpt ladies? [16:33] grrrr [17:37] hi drubin you well? [17:46] it's friday :-) :-) :-) :-) [17:48] tgif! [17:54] yo kbmonkey you poegaai lad [17:55] is it hard laying macadam [17:56] Kilos! [17:56] why? are laying roads Kilos? :) [17:57] you said thats what you gonna be doing man [17:57] got 2 more that wanna join lpi [17:57] good! :) [17:58] I wil need the weekend to catch up with the work [17:58] that section 101 is 5 mins for you guys [17:59] but i still doff, are you starting with a clean hdd and a centos live cd [17:59] because there lots on partitioning and that comes before installing [18:01] kvm, it runs a virtual computer in a window. I use that [18:01] it thinks it's a computer, but its really not. it doesn't know, he he [18:02] hehe [18:02] and you? [18:02] do you understand what i am trying to say [18:03] yes, that we need to partition disks [18:03] and me what? [18:04] ya this course is aimed at someone already using linux and then teaching how to fix another one [18:05] doesnt centos have a live cd that does the partitioning part and gives you the option to make your own [18:05] do you have a spare pc/drive/something to test the partitioning? [18:06] have the p3 and/or can use its 6g drive as a second drive here [18:07] but that drive hass xp on so i can find smses on my usb modem [18:07] well, what are you going to partition? a spare drive? [18:07] because if you partition your current drive, you will lose all your data! [18:08] lol my drive i parted to /, /boot, /home and /storage [18:08] but from the live cd not cli [18:09] yes centos uses a text installer. it has a 'live' mode, but you install through a text mode [18:10] aha [18:10] its not any harder as the GUI, the steps are quite clear and understandable [18:10] now i getting to savvy [18:10] i wonder how large the kvm is [18:10] yes they look pretty basic cli usage [18:10] i know virtualbox is quite big [18:11] hey, I think you can even install it onto a usb drive, like it was a hard drive. [18:11] must find out... [18:11] my pc dont run virtual, tried and it didnt work and the fly said its too slow [18:11] a P3? hmm, thats not too bad [18:12] then i will have to run those commands from live cd [18:12] in cli [18:13] mine was also slow. [18:13] but i member i had to mount the drive from livecd once [18:13] I enabled sometthing to fix it [18:13] lol [18:14] and you need lotsa ram to virtual [18:14] how much do you have? [18:15] 640m [18:18] tight [18:19] the 6G has XP you say. I take you use it as well [18:19] yeah it wouldnt open the virtual drive [18:20] no its just to check smses on the modem so they dont subscribe me again and steal my airtime [18:21] i also use the 6g drive to test other releases [18:21] so if you can check your sms's without XP, you won't need it? [18:21] yeah [18:21] I check and load my sim airtime. must be a way to read texts too. [18:22] i dunno how to read whats on the modem with ubuntu [18:22] i can see the storage but cant open it [18:23] maybe some programmetjie can read the text for you [18:23] if i go places then computer i see the storage [18:23] you missed the new guy here today [18:24] he been doing linux 7 months [18:24] he is joining lpi [18:25] quite a clever kid [18:26] ah, you are now a mentor then! he he ;D [18:27] lol no man i just collect them you gotta teach them [18:27] here is his blog of what he did today [18:27] armandeg.blogspot.com [18:27] he had a prob with a server [18:28] he didnt even have a blog, the fly got him to start one [18:32] its a good way to jot down what you learn [18:33] what kinda tool will read a usb modems storage area [18:33] tried text editor file goodie etc [18:34] I suspect to read that data you need a program [18:34] wait i ask maaz [18:35] he dunno gives windows links but the modem installs on windows [18:35] that issues special commands to get the data out [18:37] i wonder if i can install the modem on wine [18:38] but wine crashed me once so i purged it [18:38] found something [18:38] no dont do wine [18:38] ah [18:38] wine is good to interpret software, but not that good the interface hardware [18:41] http://www.techytalk.info/send-receive-sms-using-gsm-modem-phone-ubuntu/ [18:41] sec i go see [18:47] will try that morrow. i have had gammu and wammu before but my modem is an arab modem so didnt get it working that way [18:47] maybe this time i will find it in their modem refs [18:50] looking at those connection strings, you can try some of the common ones [18:50] also try find what hardware it is [18:51] for example, vodacome modems are not made by them. huawei makes them and vodacom just rebrands them. -- for example [18:51] perhaps a lsusb -v will give details on the hardware [18:52] it is a alcatel modem with stc the provider [18:56] holy moly all that in that little modem [18:57] http://slexy.org/view/s21QTFKNcq [19:05] there is alcatel in that phone list [19:05] kbmonkey, dont worry bout this, you had a long day/week. rest [19:06] well im going now anyway :) [19:06] being summoned [19:06] ok sleep tight laddy [19:06] ty for the help [19:06] yw Kilos [19:06] i go crash too [19:06] enjoy you sleep! [19:06] night everyone [19:06] tywill do [22:09] fp
