beataI'm building a custom kernel for an older laptop. Build and boot are fine. However, under the custom kernel the 'Places' menu does not update to show inserted USB drives. I'll start trying to narrow it down fairly soon, next day or two, but I'm curious what would make this happen. Noted that said drives *had* appeared on the desktop.04:47
well_laid_lawnwhat does *had* mean?04:50
beataI mean, when the devices should have showed up in the Places menu, they showed up as expected on the desktop.04:53
well_laid_lawndo they show in places after you mount them through thunar?04:54
beataI had not thought to check that. But, running under the Generic kernel, Places works as expected.04:58
well_laid_lawnso you missed something in your kernel build05:00
well_laid_lawnno idea what it could be though05:00
well_laid_lawnif the usb doesn't mount it'll be the filesystem missing probably05:02
beataYeah. I'll revert to Generic and then change options one subsystem at a time.05:10
beataTime to call it a day.05:23

csenger41hey11:28
csenger41anyone could help me moving Chromium window buttons to the left?11:29
TheSheepcsenger41: that is not possible11:43
csenger41why? it is possible in Gnome211:44
TheSheepcsenger41: chromium handles its title bar by itself and the developers didn't include that option11:46
TheSheepcsenger41: you can make chromium use the system window decorations, then it will obey your global settings11:46
csenger41TheSheep: as I said before, without window decorations in Ubuntu 11.04, with gnome2 the window buttons went to the left side too11:47
TheSheepcsenger41: without window decorations you don't have any buttons at all11:48
csenger41I meant system title bar and borders11:48
TheSheepyes, that's called window decorations11:48
csenger41you can make Chromium use system title bar and borders11:50
csenger41or hide them11:50
csenger41if it uses them, they are on the left side, but theres an unuseful empty bar above the tabs11:50
TheSheepcsenger41: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=152696011:50
TheSheepcsenger41: it seems that ubuntu hacked chromium to move the buttons11:52
csenger41yeah thats a solution for metacity themes, but for XFCE it doesnt work11:52
TheSheepcsenger41: this is a hack that ubuntu added, it won't be there in any normal version of chromium, it seems11:53
csenger41Ubuntu and Xubuntu uses the same Chromium11:53
csenger41but how u think Ubuntu hacked Chromium? :S11:54
TheSheepcsenger41: I remember a bug report for chromium where they wanted to move the buttons, but the chromium devs refused to add such an option, so they just went and changed it in ubuntu by themselves. My guess is that they hardcoded some check for gnome so that it only happens under ubuntu11:55
csenger41TheSheep.: that command u linked only changes the metacity values, it does nothing with Chromium11:58
TheSheepcsenger41: I didn't link you to a command, I linked you to a discussion11:58
csenger41where the solution was simple command11:59
csenger41gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout --type string menu:minimize,maximize,close11:59
TheSheepcsenger41: there are several possibilities discussed there11:59
csenger41TheSheep: well I only found that command as a solution, as I think updating isn't one12:02
TheSheepcsenger41: the solution is to download the source hacked by ubuntu, see how they detect whether to move the buttons or not, and fund out a way to cheat it to think it's gnome12:06
TheSheepfind*12:06
TheSheepor just enable system decorations and live with it12:07
jamessaltyHi, can anyone recommend a mouse odometer program?13:31
jamessaltyIt looks like both kodo and xodo have been removed from the repos?13:33
Guest18680Got an old laptop with 512 MB RAM. Is Xubuntu gonna be faster than Ubuntu on it?14:25
jamessaltyGuest18680: IMO 512M should be plenty14:31
Guest18680Sys reqs for both call for 512 MB. I wonder which one will be faster?14:31
Guest18680For both?14:31
jamessaltyXubuntu will not be slower14:31
jamessaltyI have no idea about Unity14:31
Guest18680I find Ubuntu rather slow on it14:31
jamessaltyXFCE is a lot lighter than Unity14:31
Guest18680I use Unity 2d14:31
jamessaltyI find Unity rather slow on my i3 with 4G of RAM14:31
jamessaltyI have never used Unity 2D, so I don't know about that14:31
jamessaltyAnyway, XFCE is a better interface than Unity14:31
jamessalty(IMHO)14:32
Guest18680So you say I should give XFCE a try if I find Unity 2d slow on 512 MB?14:32
jamessaltyDefinitely14:32
jamessaltyYou don't need to reinstall from disk or antyhing14:32
Guest18680I think I14:32
jamessaltyjust "apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" should do it14:32
Guest18680OK14:32
Guest18680Thanks14:32
jamessaltyand the logout, and at the login screen click on the little gear icon and choose XFCE or Xubuntu or whatever it is labelled as14:33

jamessaltygood luck :)14:33
Guest18680thanks, have a nice day :-)14:33
jamessalty<Guest18680> So you say I should give XFCE a try if I find Unity 2d slow on 512 MB?14:40
jamessaltyI know he's gone, but I say he should give XFCE a try regardless ;)14:41
G__81hi everyone installed xubuntu for the first time and its really cool. I have used xfce in fedora but i see a big difference with xubuntu compared to fedora.15:26
xslis there a way to remove from thunar ( the icons on the side panel) file system and so on ( i already managed to remove Network )15:33
xsland the ones from ~/.gtk-bookmarks i also know how to edit15:34
G__81i want to install citrix receiver in Ubuntu 11.10 Its actually Xubuntu but when i install it i get lot of unmet dependencies. I follow the following link15:44
G__81https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CitrixICAClientHowTo15:44
G__81i get quite a lot of dependency errors and i am not able to find those packages15:44
G__81can someone help me out ?15:44
hobgoblinG__81: are you trying to install the deb with software centre?15:47
hobgoblinI installed gdebi to do that - works better imho15:47
G__81hi hobgoblin15:48
G__81hobgoblin, i use the dpkg -i  from terminal15:48
G__81i can paste the output. I need it very badly. If you can help me out, i would very thankful to you15:48
G__81I have installed 64 bit Xubuntu but i am ok to install either the 32 bit version of the client or 64 bit15:49
G__81this is what i do15:49
G__81sudo dpkg -i icaclient_12.0.0_amd64.deb15:49
hobgoblinG__81: using a server or desktop ? to be honest sudo apt-get install gdebi and then right click install with gdebi - bit no good in a server with no gui I guess15:50
hobgoblinG__81: paste the output to paste.ubuntu.com15:50
G__81i use the desktop edition15:50
G__81i ll paste the output15:50
hobgoblinI'll have a look - but I've not got a whole load of time unfortunately15:51
G__81http://paste.ubuntu.com/863610/15:51
hobgoblinhave you tried using software centre to install it - afaik it 'should' do the dependencies15:51
ThePendulumDoes anyone know how to use Xubuntu to install Xubuntu on a USB?15:52
G__81no i have not tried it15:52
ThePendulumSo not the installer, but the OS itself15:52
hobgoblinyou trying to install the 32 bit one in a 64 bit install G__81 ?15:52
ThePendulumBecause the Live CD isn't very good in remembering settings, lol15:52
G__81no the 64 bit15:53
G__81i am trying to install the 64 bit version15:53
hobgoblinThePendulum: liveusb persistent or actually install to a usb15:54
hobgoblinThePendulum: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent maybe will help15:54
G__81hobgoblin, i am now installing the citrix 64 bit client using the software center. Its progressing very slowly but i am not sure how it would show the End User agreement. I mean when you install using dpkg -i <.deb> it immediately shows the EULA  agreement and you got to press Yes but in this case i am not sure how it would handle it15:55
hobgoblinprobably you will get a terminal screen with the eula - tab to OK and enter15:56
hobgoblinand yea I find software centre to be slow - hence using gdebi when I want to do things like that15:56
G__81hobgoblin, i wish and hope this succeeds i got to connect to my office network :(15:57
hobgoblinG__81: alt+tab to make sure it's not hidden itself behind another window - took me 2 goes to install codecs the first time15:57
ThePendulumThe problem is, I only have 1 USB and I usually put the installer on that USB. However, the installer can't really install Xubuntu on the stick it's on because it would basically destruct itself.15:57
hobgoblinThePendulum: that would be a problem ;)15:58
hobgoblingood luck both - sorry - gtg16:00
magerquarkThePendulum, did you try this one? https://launchpad.net/liveusb16:06
magerquarkor unetbootin?16:08
ThePendulumUNetbootin puts an installer on my USB stick, but I would like to install Xubuntu as an installed OS on my USB, rather than a Live CD16:12
magerquarkThePendulum, it has an option that allows you to dedicate disk space for persitent files16:14
ThePendulumYes, but that only allows you to save files, not save settings and such16:15
Pasq89my sound doesnt work on xubuntu. what can i do?16:20
ThePendulumHave you tried to replug it?16:22
jadoewhat did I break now? http://sprunge.us/hZRO16:24
Pasq89i m on a laptop. w/ build in speekers..16:29
Pasq89but i converted it from lubuntu... i restarted my system.. but sound still doesnt work..16:30
ThePendulumHmmm16:31
ThePendulumbrb...16:31
magerquarkThePendulum, the other option would be to install virtualbox mount the usb-stick to an image and install it via live-cd through virtualbox16:33
Pasq89can i reinstall the sound drivers or something?? .. to make sound work..16:35
magerquarki would ask google about your problem16:36
Pasq89win speekers or not, sound doesnt work on xubuntu... tried to remove .pulse files.. but nothing..16:54
Pasq89*with headphones or not(just speekers), sound doesnt work on xubuntu... tried to remove .pulse files.. but nothing..16:56
holsteinPasq89: try installing pavucontrol ... try running in a terminal "aplay -l"..if you see your device there, then its likely just a setting somewhere you are not accustomed to... you can try pavucontrol and looking in alsamixer... dont trust any lables16:57
holsteinlabels*16:57
holsteini encountered an issue where (in XFCE) i could mute the sound with the keyboard shortcut, but i could not un-mute it16:58
Pasq89what does aplay show me? i want to activate the build in speekers..17:05
holsteinPasq89: aplay shows you a list of devices that are showing up as useable by the system17:06
holsteinpavucontrol is what i have used to go in an enable the use of several devices, including the built-in speakers on the internal sound card, as well as the alsamixer settings, and mute-bug i mentioned17:07
Pasq89how can i found out the name of the speakers with aplay?17:08
Pasq89i got 3.. analog.. digital.. and hdmi.. it says..17:08
Pasq89HOW! FIXED!17:09
Pasq89wow*17:09
Pasq89almost got a heartattack.. sound was full! :P17:09
Pasq89i have the mute-bug too.. is there a way in pavucontrol to remove it for all? or just everytime use pavucontrol to fix that?17:10
holsteini just worked around it... not sure... i wouldnt expect a fix though17:11
Pasq89thanks for the info!!!17:12
ThePendulummagerquark: It's possible to boot the installer iso through Virtualbox?18:00
magerquarkjep this is possible18:01
ThePendulumAny idea how?18:01
magerquarkso you mount the iso via virtualbox18:01
magerquarkstar a live cd image18:01

magerquarkwellevery virtualbox-harddisk has an cd-rom, but you can insert a .iso image18:02
magerquarkno you mount the xubuntu image as a virtual-cd rom18:02
magerquarkstar the live-system18:02
ThePendulumstar?18:02
magerquarkand then you hand over the usb-drive to the virtual-xubuntu18:03
magerquarkstar= atart18:03
ThePendulumAha18:03
magerquarkstar= start18:03
ThePendulumHehe, I thought so, but you said 'star' twice so I thought I should ask18:03
