G__81i have installed xubuntu and i would like to try the KDE version and i just gave sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop. Is that enough or is there something else that needs to be done ?03:59
G__81any one here?04:02
bazhangG__81, log out once it is installed then login choosing the kde desktop04:02
G__81bazhang, ok thanks but as far as the packages are concerned just installing kubuntu-desktop would bring everything right ?04:03
bazhangG__81, yes, a large number of packages; it's a meta-package04:04
bazhang!meta-package04:04
ubottuA meta-package is a package that simply depends upon other packages and brings them in. It's not a real package, but a very useful package that can drag in other package versions.04:04
G__81oh ok thanks a lot. I hope i am satisfied with Ubuntu's KDE. I had problems with Fedora's 16 KDE04:04
G__81i am thoroughly impressed with Kubuntu 11.10 installed it on top of xubuntu and i should say this is the best KDE distro i have ever used04:43
G__81its just truly awesome04:43
shoopdewoophi all, im new to kubuntu and linux as a whole, hoping for a little guidance...04:44
G__81one small thing i would like to know is that when my system boots up, it still says Xubuntu. How do i change it04:44
SentynelG__81: I think uninstalling plymouth-theme-xubuntu-* and making sure plymouth-theme-kubuntu-* are installed should do it04:45
shoopdewoopdoes anyone know how kubuntu performs on a netbook? looking for a good distro to put on a dell mini 101004:46
Sentynelshoopdewoop: it's tolerable on my netbook (samsung nc10), but a bit laggy in places04:47
shoopdewoopis there a distro that isnt too laggy?04:48
Sentynelshoopdewoop: I use lubuntu mostly04:48
shoopdewoopi tried lubuntu once, but i couldnt get it running on my dell. dont remember why. perhaps i ought to try again04:49
shoopdewoopworked beautifully on my desktop though; might be worth giving another shot on the netbook04:53

BluesKaj'Morning all12:05
DaskreechMorning BluesKaj12:58
Daskreechjameslord, kdewallet is a place to keep all your passwords behind one password. So instead of remembering dozens or hundreds of passwords you only need to remember one13:00
Daskreechjameslord, If you make that one password a blank password then you don't even need to remember that :) of course then anyone who uses your computer can easily get into everything13:01
DaskreechYou can tell kdewallet to always remember for some instances and then it won't ask for the password at all for those applications13:02
DaskreechI presume that you have a password for something in your plasma desktop if it's asking at startup13:02
BluesKajHey Daskreech13:03

navlelois anyone familiar with the phenomenon where plasma freezes in short intervals?13:18
Daskreechmaybe?13:27
AlexPHhi13:32
navleloDaskreech: it just freezes at random times, i really dont know what the source of the problem is13:45
Daskreechone second freezes or extended freeze ups?13:46
navlelo10-20 seconds or so13:46
navleloalso seems like nothing goes through dbus when it hangs13:49
navleloi guess thats a consequence of plasma being freezed, not the other way around13:49
navleloi'm using the latest kde from the ppa btw, but this problem existed in 4.6 as well13:51
Daskreechnavlelo, nothing goes through dbus?13:54
Daskreechyou can't send a dbus command to none plasma processes?13:54

navlelothat contains some of the backed up commands as well14:12
navleloso that is bad?14:12
Daskreechwell that's not Plasma at all14:13
Daskreechso it may be that dbus is pausing and that pauses plasma14:13
navlelohmmm14:14
DaskreechI presume that when plasma freezes you can still move around windows etc ?14:14

navleloand every command i perform, like pressing a program in the task bar, does not happen until the freeze is over14:15

shoopdewoopanyone put 11.10 on a netbook? trying to boot it live on mine (dell mini 1010) but i keep getting an error at the splash screen (too fast to read) and then it brings me to a terminal prompt16:14
DarthFrogshoopdewoop:  You can see if there's anything relevant in /var/log/messages or /var/log/Xorg.log.0.  Also, try running the command 'dmesg | less'.16:17
shoopdewoopwhere are those directories? ive never really used linux before :P16:18
DarthFrogI'm not sure what you mean by that.  I gave you the paths.16:19
DarthFrogThe path is /var/log and the files are messages and Xorg.log.0 in that directory.16:20
shoopdewoopis that assuming im running linux already? im running windows right now, and trying to boot 11.10 off a usb key16:20
DarthFrogWell, they don't exist if you're not running Linux, right? :-)16:21

shoopdewoopi cant boot into linux, thats my problem16:24
DarthFrogIn /var/log/Xorg.log.0, look for lines starting with "EE", which indicates an error.16:24
DarthFrogI thought you said you were booted into a terminal?  All that I told you can be run in the terminal.16:25
shoopdewoopahhhhh okay16:25
DarthFrogTo read the messages and Xorg.log.0 files, use the "less" utility.  At the terminal, type: cd /var/log16:26
DarthFrogThen "less messages" and "less  Xorg.log.0".  And "dmesg | less".16:26
DarthFrogIn less, use "q" to quit.16:27

DaskreechCourse there is no way for us to know if networking is up16:29

Daskreechit could have been an initramfs terminal which is I think much more likely16:31
DarthFrogCould be.  He's booting from a USB key.  I'd next get him to try with a proper CD.16:31
DarthFrogOn the other hand, if it's a problem with live media, there's not much we can do, anyway.16:33

Daskreechshoopdewoop, was the terminal one that asked you to login or did it just allow you to start typing command?16:45
shoopdewoopcommands. i chose 'live' from the boot menu, and it started to boot, and after it got to the kubuntu splash screen (blue with loading dots) it loaded for awhile, flashed an error, then the screen went black and a terminal came up16:47

Daskreechshoopdewoop, ok When You run md5sum against a file it produces a long string19:44
DaskreechIf anything as in anything at all changes in the file it will make a different string19:44
Daskreech so what you do is run md5sum on your ISO file then you look at http://releases.ubuntu.com/11.10/MD5SUMS to see if it matches the string there19:44

Daskreechshoopdewoop, isn't it? And Dell is one of the manufacturers who have support lines for Ubuntu as well20:01
DaskreechLooks like it's a kinda difficult struggle to get it installed on that machine20:01

meduserhello, how is everyone today?20:41
meduserlooking for a little help if someone is willing to help20:41
meduserin windows 7 I used to use Dameon Lite for mounting and running a copy of Network + software. Any ideas how to do that in Kubutu?20:43
meduser*kubuntu20:44
DarthFrogWhat specifically are you trying to do?  i.e. what does that program do for you?20:44
meduserDarthFrog: I am using the software for learning, it's part of my University course. Daemon lite would mount the iso, and the software would be open20:45
Daskreechmeduser, If you want to mount an ISO just make a directory and mount it20:46
DarthFrogSorry, I mean what are you eventually trying to get?  What does the software in the ISO do?20:46
DarthFrogDaskreech: It's going to be a Windows program.20:46
meduserDarthFrog: it is a simulation software that is used when learning network wireing, connections, etc.20:47
DaskreechDarthFrog, Ah well you help with that I'm off to work20:47
DaskreechVbox20:47
DarthFrogmeduser:  What is the name of ISO file?20:47
meduserDarthFrog: Testout.iso20:47
DarthFrogmeduser:  Type these commands at a terminal session (i.e. Konsole): "sudo -i" "mkdir /mnt/disk" "mount -t iso9660 -o loop,ro Testout.iso /mnt/disk"20:49
DarthFrogThen type "exit".20:49
DarthFrogUse the file manager (Dolphin) to browse to /mnt/disk and find your program.  If the wine package is installed, clicking on the exe should (well, might) launch it.  If you have your fingers crossed and click your heels.20:51
DarthFrogIf wine isn't installed, use the Muon Package Manager (in the System menu) and install it.20:52
DarthFrogYou could also just use AcetoneISO to mount the ISO image.20:53
DarthFrogThat should be available in Muon, too, I should think.20:54
meduserDarthFrog: ok, I have it mounted..checking things out..20:56
meduserDarthFrog: installing wine through terminal20:56

DarthFrogmeduser: If the Windows program won't run under wine (WINE Is Not an Emulator), then install Virtualbox and install Windows in a virtual machine to run your program.20:58
meduserOk, I already have Virtualbox and vmware installed, so that might just be quicker..lol20:59

shoopdewoopDaskreech: I'm back now :)21:00
DarthFrogshoopdewoop: He's left for work.21:00
shoopdewoopahh rats21:00
meduserDarthFrog: so there is no program in Linux that is like Damean Lite?21:01
ikoniameduser: you don't need it you can mount iso images21:01
DarthFrogmeduser:  Yes, acetoneiso.21:03
meduserDarthFrog: thanks, I'll try that too. Looking through the folders in the mounted image, there appears to be linux in the iso21:04
DarthFrogmeduser:  Well then, perhaps you don't need to use wine.21:04
meduserDarthFrog: that would be cool...wine is almost finished installing, so I'll see soon enough21:05
shoopdewoopin terms of performance on a netbook, is kubuntu or lubuntu a better option?21:06
DarthFrogLubuntu uses less resources.21:07
DarthFrogKubuntu is more full-featured.21:07
shoopdewoopfull-featured meaning what?21:07
DarthFrogAlso, check out Xubuntu.21:07
DarthFrog!xubuntu21:08
ubottuXubuntu is Ubuntu with Xfce instead of !GNOME. More info at http://www.xubuntu.org and http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Xubuntu/ - To install from Ubuntu: « sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop » - Join #xubuntu for support - See also: !Ubuntu and !Xubuntu-Channels21:08
shoopdewoophmm alright ill check it out21:09
DarthFrogBTW, you can have all the various desktops installed at the same time and switch between them at will (by logging out of one and logging back in another).21:10
meduserDarthFrog: no, just errors right left and down the middle..going to try acetone21:11
DarthFrogAnd every desktop environment (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu or Lubuntu) can run programs from the others.21:11
DarthFrogmeduser: You don't need Acetone if you've got the ISO mounted.21:11
=== JackyAlcine is now known as jalcine
shoopdewoopso basically, the only difference between ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, and lubuntu is the desktop environment?21:12
DarthFrogCorrect.21:13
DarthFrogAnd they can all be installed at the same time.21:13
DarthFrogsudo apt-get install <ubuntu|kubuntu|lubuntu|xubuntu>-desktop21:14
DarthFrogPick one. :-)21:14
shoopdewoopokay. so what did you mean when you said that kubuntu was more full-featured? (sorry for all the questions, just eager to learn :P)21:14
DarthFrogshoopdewoop: I've not fully explored the other environments but XfCE (Xubuntu) for instance is not as integrated or as many tools as KDE (Kubuntu).21:15
DarthFrogI suggest you try them all out and see which one you like best.21:15
shoopdewoopokay; ill give them a try and see what happens!21:16
shoopdewoopthanks for the info21:16

dwdzhi! I installed KDE 4.8 from the backports PPA repo, and also gtk3-engines-oxygen. But the icons in pavucontrol for "lock channels" and "set as fallback" are not there, as in this nice screenshot from K 12.04 beta 1 http://people.canonical.com/~jriddell/blog2/pavu.png What should I install/config to have those icons?22:40
Riddelldwdz: precise22:45
dwdzRiddell: yes22:45
dwdzRiddell: ah, you mean I should install precise? It is to much beta, hehe. What did you in precise to have there icons? Because I would like to try to fix that in my oneiric install.22:50
RiddellI'm afraid I don't know22:51
dwdzRiddell: ah, ok, thank you anyway!22:52
george_Hello. I'm running Kubuntu 11.10 on Dell Inspiron. After the 27/02/2012 update, strangely, system sounds don't work anymore. I do have sound with apps and browsers, and at system setting config and notifications, things are properly config.  However, when I press to kubuntu plays the sound for an event such as log in, it's muted. Any ideas?23:18
Riddellgeorge_: it's a known bug23:23
george_Riddell: really? Is there any workaround or should we just wait a fix?23:24
Riddellgeorge_: just wait23:25
george_Riddell: sight..... ok, thank you.23:26
