spacebug-dont know. Probably driver problems00:01
ironhalikMCR1: also, cat /home/your_user_name/.xsession-errors00:01
MCR1ironhalik: that was a long output :)00:06
ironhalikuh, you can 'tail -30' it :>00:06
ironhalikor open it with gedit or sth00:06
MCR1ok00:07
spacebug-MCR1: it seems that int3 is a breakpoint. Like if compiz was running in debug mode00:10
MCR1spacebug-: I used my 11.10 compizconfig configuration and copied my old home dir, maybe that is causing incompatibilities...00:12
MCR1spacebug-: ** WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'GMountMountFlags' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags'00:13
spacebug-what version of compiz do you use?00:13
MCR1Compiz 0.9.7.000:14
MCR1the warning I posted above is from .xsession-errors00:14
MCR1after that another warning of this type, then the crash...00:15
spacebug-MCR1: see this chat http://pastebin.com/cD8eigVe00:16
spacebug-so, because you are running 12.04 BETA 1 or you have some PPA for compiz it is built with debugging on00:17
spacebug-and for some reason you hit that part of the code that triggers the int 300:17
spacebug-might be bad drivers or something else..00:17
spacebug-of course you could try removeing/resettign the config00:18
MCR1spacebug-: thx a lot for your help. now I am a bit wiser. still hard to cope with it. gotta fix that.00:18
spacebug-yeah enoying of cours00:19
spacebug-e00:19
MCR1compiz is 0.9.7.0~bzr3025-r3034-p737~precise100:19
levuhi, if i apt-get remove network-manager and set the /etc/network/interfaces to http://pastie.org/3514944 then the machine can't connect to the network on startup and it displays "waiting for network configuration..."00:20
levuwhat am i doing wrong? i want to set a static IP (w/o GUI)00:20
MCR1Is there a way to get in contact with actual compiz/unity developers as it seems that the compiz project outside Ubuntu is asleep... ?00:21
chelzMCR1: you can check the copyright file00:21
MCR1chelz: ?00:22
chelzhm00:22
chelznvm00:22
chelzMCR1: http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/c/compiz/compiz_0.8.6-0ubuntu9/compiz.copyright00:23
chelzfrom http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/compiz -> "copyright file". so yeah that's from maverick, since newer compiz releases don't seem to have one00:23
zzecooli think something broke vlc00:24
zzecoolis anyone able to play anything with vlc?00:24
FernandoMiguelI am00:24
spacebug-levu: seems correct00:25
zzecoolcan you try it now00:25
FernandoMiguel$ apt-cache policy vlc00:25
FernandoMiguel  Installed: 2.0.0-400:25
glosolizzecool: it brokes Xorg ?00:25
zzecooli have the same00:25
zzecoolit hungs00:25
FernandoMiguelzzecool: it works for me00:25
zzecooland i have to kill -9 it00:25
glosolihmm00:25
glosoli;D00:25
FernandoMiguelI'm getting that with totem00:25
FernandoMiguelon some movies00:25
spacebug-levu: sure it is eth0 ?00:25
zzecoolstrange used to play perfectly00:25
zzecoollike before yesterday00:26
MCR1zzecool: vlc is broken here as well (v2.1.0 git)00:27
zzecoolMCR1: im using the 2.0.0.0-400:27
zzecoolbut00:27
zzecooli tried 2.1.000:28
zzecooltoo00:28
zzecoolwith the same results00:28
zzecooljust hungs00:28
zzecoolMCR1: its not the vlc its something else in ubunut that cause the problems00:28
MCR1seems to be a recent update as it played recently...00:28
zzecoolubuntu*00:28
zzecoolMCR1: indeed00:28
levuspacebug-: yes, it's eth000:30
levuspacebug-: at least it's eth0 when i start the system with network manager enabled00:31
=== zzecool is now known as zzecool_afk
spacebug-what dowa 'ifconfig -a' in a terminal give you?00:31
spacebug-does*00:31
levuspacebug-: eth0 and lo (when network manager is enabled, when it's not i can't get into the system)00:33
levuit's a vm and all i have is ssh, if it doesn't work i have to restore it from backup :D00:34
spacebug-hum00:35
spacebug-levu: anything in the logs?00:36
levuspacebug-: don't know, i don't get into the machine after rebooting :/00:37
spacebug-oh yeah00:38
levuso i just added a second network interface, configured this one via /etc/network/interfaces and the other is (hopefully) configured with network-manager, but on startup there's still the message "Waiting for network configuration..."00:44
spacebug-levu: I started my virtual machine running 12.04 and removed package network-manager and changed my /etc/network/interfaces to look  like yours (but my numbers for network) and it works great00:46
levuweird...00:47
spacebug-maybe you have networknamager handle something more that f-ups when you uninstall it00:47
levui just tried to configure it with the interfaces without removing network manager and it works00:49
spacebug-hum00:50
spacebug-but since that is still running it takes over anyway?00:50
Russ_W_I have tested 12.04 Beta 1 64 bit Live CD and can only get to web sites by typing the IP address.  Has anyone else seen this issue?00:51
tr33m4nRuss_W_, does it happen with any other computer on your network?00:51
Russ_W_tr33m4n: no all other PC's are fine00:51
levuspacebug-: seems if network-manager doesn't try to configure interfaces if there is an entry in the interfaces00:51
spacebug-levu: ok. So then it could work as an ugly hack till you figure out the real resaon =)00:52
levuspacebug-: yes :) thx for your help :)00:52
spacebug-yw00:53
tr33m4nRuss_W_, well I'm not entirely sure, try installing instead :p00:53
FyodorovnaRuss_W_, what is the card for lan and wireless?00:53
Russ_W_tr33m4n: lol, it's the mrs win7 PC I'd be dead meat lol00:54
snadgehmm.. audio corrupion in minecraft00:54
spacebug-Russ_W_: on the other PC:s have you set them up manually when it comes to IP / DNS ?00:54
snadgeunless you kill pulseaudio and restart minecraft00:54
Russ_W_Fyodorovna: I will have to go look, it is an HP desktop with all onboard nics...I will go look00:55
snadgeneed to stop release of 12.04 until minecraft works perfectly ;)00:55
snadgeand the fglrx driver is fixed00:55
FyodorovnaRuss_W_, lspci in the terminal wiil list stuff.00:55
Fyodorovnawill*00:55
Russ_W_spacebug-: No, automagic setup of devices and drivers, never had to mess with anything00:56
tr33m4nsnadge, some interesting things are happening to Java support at the mo, I wouldn't hold your breath00:56
Russ_W_Fyodorovna: going to look now...00:56
snadgethe bugs arn't that numerous though00:56
spacebug-Russ_W_: ok. As you describe it it seems that there is something wrong with dns servers but that should be configured automatically. Same with ip adress00:57
snadgeglitchy sound.. which is probably a pulseaudio issue.. and it crashes on exit.. which is just yucky more than it is a huge problem00:57
tr33m4nsnadge, what jre are you using?00:57
snadgeit seems to do it with all of them.. but at the momnet im on oracle 1.6u3000:57
snadgeopenjdk 6 or 7 makes no difference00:58
snadgeas does oracle 700:58
itaylor57snadge, have your tried oracle 7?00:58
tr33m4nsnadge, well good to hear it works with openjdk anyway00:58
snadgeyeah.. you have to manually update libwjgl to the latest version otherwise it wont even run with oracle 7 ;)00:58
snadgethey all seem to repeatedly crash on exit though.. if i knew more about java / stack tracing etc.. perhaps having the minecraft source code would help, which we dont00:59
snadgeit might be prudent to report it to mojang.. but they traditionally care little about the linux port.. surprising they still support it00:59
snadgeif i had to guess.. Xorg has updated something which is causing it to crash/exception01:00
tr33m4nsnadge, funny, I always thought Minecraft would be a game native to Linux, simply by the way it looks :p01:01
snadgealso running it under compiz.. significantly reduces performance more than it used to.. unity2d less of an issue01:01
snadgejust as well minecraft sucks now and im over it.. but the 1.2 update renewed interest for a few hours01:04
tr33m4nsnadge, never touched it, saw many friends lose many hours over it though01:05
Russ_W_spacebug-:lspci outputs wired nic is Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E wireless is Ralink RT5390 (was not connected wireless at the time)01:06
spacebug-Russ_W_: well I don't know. If you get an ip and can browse the net using ip but not dns-names it seems the network interface works01:08
FyodorovnaRuss_W_, you need driver for those I believe.01:27
Russ_W_Thank you spacebug- Fyodorovna01:29
spacebug-yw01:29
ChrisGagnonIs there a liveCD for macbook pros?01:30
FyodorovnaChrisGagnon, I believe so here is a link you will have to find the development version if there is one. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation01:35
FyodorovnaChrisGagnon, you might consider a release though really.01:36
ChrisGagnonI am at a global jam, with someone who wants to test it... we are using virtualbox now.01:37
Raggssorry i have to ask, why ubuntu on a macbook pro?01:38
jbichaRaggs: why not?01:39
Raggsi can understand replacing XP Vista and even 7 with linux but dont see any advantage of using linux on a mac01:40
FyodorovnaChrisGagnon, cool enjoy yourself now. :)01:40
ChrisGagnonFyodorovna: thanks :)01:41
jbichaRaggs: there's quite a bit of Linux-specific software that doesn't run on OS X so if I had a Mac, I'd definitely do it01:41
FyodorovnaRaggs, it's not your mothers bsd. :)01:41
DaekdroomWhy not buy a regular PC if you're going to install Linux?01:41
DaekdroomIt's cheaper.01:42
Raggsexactly, save a few hundred01:42
FyodorovnaDaekdroom, some want to mutliboot probably.01:42
DaekdroomWell, there's that case.01:42
FyodorovnaI have a netbook tha is all Ican afford.01:42
DaekdroomThe thing is, don't buy a Mac unless you need OS X.01:42
FyodorovnaDaekdroom, they just want to check it out.01:43
DaekdroomI never said they weren't :P01:43
DaekdroomOne could, for example, buy a Mac before learning they prefer a Linux distro.01:43
Raggshard to imagine01:44
FyodorovnaRaggs, dichotomies are all you understand?01:44
jbichaRaggs: some people have money and like Ubuntu any way :)01:44
* spacebug- has money but I dont want a mac. I want ubuntu ant that is what I'm running on all my computers01:45
RaggsFyodorovna, not at all, but i dont understand using a lesser OS on a mac01:46
FyodorovnaRaggs, lesser in the world opinion or yours?01:46
Raggsi would say both01:46
FyodorovnaRaggs, beep your wrong that is your opinion. :)01:46
FyodorovnaIt certainly is not mine, a OS is  OS here.01:47
RaggsFyodorovna, really, when did linux overtake OSx?01:47
Raggsi never said it as your opinion01:47
bazhangRaggs, how does this relate to bug fixing and the development release01:47
FyodorovnaRaggs, does not matter, it is personal preference, not group think.01:47
jbichaRaggs: I can contribute and make Ubuntu better, I can't do that for much of OS X01:48
Raggsperhaps putting word in my mouth isnt a great idea, pay attention to what i actually AM saying01:48
bazhanglets get back on topic please01:48
Raggsbazhang, you are right, there was so much conversation going on, sorry for interrupting it01:49
bazhangRaggs, thats not the point. chit chat in #ubuntu-offtopic01:50
bazhangthis channel is for those interested in testing and bug fixing, not comparing OSes01:50
shane_Hi guys I have an issue when connecting headphones the speaker sound is not muted and when I restart ubuntu 12.04 beta 1 with the headphones connected, when I disconnect them the speaker sound does not come back.02:05
shane_I have tested this on a HP desktop and headphones shows in the sound settings output, but on my Acer Aspire 8930g laptop its not there02:06
shane_any idea, whether this will be fixed before the final release, as it was working fine in 11.1002:06
shane_I have raised a bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/94121902:07
ubottuLaunchpad bug 941219 in alsa-driver (Ubuntu) "Speaker Sound does not disable when Headphones are connected. Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2 " [Undecided,New]02:07
spacebug-shane_: did you upgrade och new install?02:10
shane_yes today02:11
spacebug-which? upgrade or new install? ;)02:11
shane_still the same02:11
shane_new install beta 102:12
spacebug-ok02:12
shane_i had hoped it would fix the issue, but it still remains02:12
spacebug-I was just thinking if there could be a config / setting that makes it work in 11.10 and not in 12.04 since it is a fresh install02:12
shane_it had been working since 10.10 to 11.10 with no issues02:13
shane_all I have now for the output  is digital output (s/pdif) and Analogue output02:14
shane_no headphone output like I have on my HP desktop02:14
shane_just wondered if any sounds devs where in tonight02:15
spacebug-I only have the same outputs for my extra sound card but for my internal it shows headphone also02:16
KI7MTQuestion, is there going to be a non-Unity desktop or failsafe for Ubuntu 12.04?02:16
shane_mine is an internal  realtek02:16
shane_no KI7MT you would have to install it via the USC02:17
spacebug-KI7MT: default I think you will have unity and unity 2d (as fallback). You can then ofcourse install gnome-shell and gnome-shell fallback02:18
KI7MTok, thanks, that's what I was looking for the gnome-shell that will work, I have several neighbours that want 12.04, but want the same desktop gnome2.x.x02:19
spacebug-KI7MT: well gnome-shell for 12.04 will not look as the one for 11.10 and older02:20
spacebug-but the gnome-shell fallback I think will look something like it02:20
KI7MTOk, as long as I can get some sort of gnome 2.x looking shell with pull down menu's I can make it work Im sure.02:21
spacebug-;)02:21
shane_gnome-session-fallback if you install that you will have the menu you want02:21
KI7MTThe more I use Ununti the more it's growing on me, but it's a "Very Slow" growth :-)02:21
KI7MT.. Unity ...02:22
shane_but its gnome 3, to add to the panel you need to hold now alt and right mouse click02:22
shane_I have been using unity since 11.04, and love it,02:22
shane_gnome-shell is far to much like tablet02:22
KI7MTI've been testing 12.04 servers and XB/LXDE but have stayed clear of Unity until thinngs are pretty stable, if there is such a point.02:23
shane_seems rather stable now KI7MT02:23
shane_much faster02:23
KI7MTWell the servers are doing well I know that much, and most fo the art-work for the other distro's seems to be in place so it's all comming together.02:24
shane_sweet02:24
KI7MTProblem I see with 3D Unity is it's going to cut out allot of older hardware from use, it's just going to be too heavy and require to much resource.02:25
spacebug-well then unity 2D could be the thing02:25
shane_have to say I agree with you, but its not an issue for me on my 1GB nvidia GPU02:26
KI7MTIt's gonna have to be 2D for allot of folks Im affraid.02:26
shane_unity2D is looks quite nice now02:26
shane_looking*02:26
KI7MTI personally will be ok, I have 2 older i386 laptops for testing, but all my main rigs re 2GB+ and descent GPU's so I'm not too worried there.02:27
KI7MTIm updating all the CD Images this evening, gonna do a full round of VM installs tomorrow and see how things are shaping up.02:28
spacebug-I'm running 2D on my virtuell test machine and on one other virtual machine I'm running xubuntu02:28
KI7MTI test all the ISO for Install, and work on Ubuntu Desktop Apps testing in the QA group.02:29
KI7MTwell I say all, not Cloud, ARM SPC and few of the strange ones.02:29
spacebug-shane_: about your sound problem, sure it is in alsa and not the sound card driver? I mean that detects when you plug in / out something to / from the card?02:30
shane_I'm not so sure, I think it has something to do with alsa, as I have seen a few updates to it since alpha releases02:31
spacebug-ok02:31

shane_well I hope they fix it, I do a lot of music production,  off to bed now, thanks for the chat guys02:43
c_smithdoes anyone here like the new look of LightDM or am I the only one who likes it?03:00
=== Omega- is now known as Omega
Daekdroomc_smith, LightDM looks is like the only single thing I haven't seen nobody complain about.03:06
Daekdroom*anybody03:06
c_smithDaekdroom, true. it must be good, then.03:10
dr_willisi dont see the point of the white dot grid in lightdm03:10
dr_willisor why they dont put a bigger clock calander ir weather report in the emoty space03:11
c_smithdr_willis, not sure on that part myself, never noticed it, I mainly look at the part I use to log in.03:13
c_smithxD03:13
DaekdroomThe weather report would be a bit troubling.03:15
DaekdroomIt'd require network AND configuration... but a login screen is something that affects more than 1 user..03:15
DaekdroomI wonder if it's possible to change the indicators there are in LightDM03:16
snadgelinux as a desktop os still sucks pretty badly :P03:16
snadgeeven if unity worked properly, and there was no display driver bugs etc, theres still nothing to run under it anyway hehe03:17
c_smithsnadge, y u no liek Linuks? jk03:17
snadgeit was a struggle just to play minecraft03:17
snadgefglrx is still a giant turd, with 2 critical bugs03:18
snadgewhich are receiving zero attention03:18
Daekdroomriiiight. Like Windows doesn't have BSOD and other problems.03:18
snadgehaha windows is awesome in comparison ;)03:18
DaekdroomIt's slower ;)03:18
c_smithbut honestly, there is plenty that runs on Linux really nicely, I.E. Revenge Of The Titans, Osmos, Dungeons Of Dredmor, etc. Revenge03:18
dr_willisfglrx is working better for me in 12* then in 11*03:19
DaekdroomIt's a matter of use, honestly.03:19
snadgefglrx has two show stopping bugs currently03:19
snadgewindow titles not updating (compiz/nux), and xv just crashes X whenever you try to play a video03:19
snadgei want to punch someone from amd in the nuts :P03:21
DaekdroomI hate having to say this again, but I hardly think that punching a developer will get them to solve your problem.03:21
snadgewell if theyre from amd, thats surely ok03:21
DaekdroomAMD is trying to do a great job when it comes to hardware drivers.03:21
snadgei didnt mean someone from canonical, unless that would help ;)03:22
DaekdroomI mean, Catalyst is less unstable than the nvidia blob, but they're actively working on the opensource driver, atleast.03:22
Daekdroom*stable03:22
snadgein any case, i cant do anything to fix it, and there are people with that assigned responsibility who are failing to do anything about it03:22
snadgefor months now03:23
snadgeif it was windows, that would simply be unacceptable and/or it would be fixed by now03:23
dr_willisif it was windows they would have a team and a budget also...03:24
snadgebut because its desktop linux, not enough people care. the sad reality03:24
DaekdroomThe Catalyst driver shares code with the Windows driver, dr_willis03:24
snadgeyeah but windows doesnt run compiz, or use xv03:25
snadgeso the linux specific stuff, gets less attention03:25
snadgebut yeah besides problems with proprietary stuff that nobody seems to take ownership of or care about.. 12.04 is great ;)03:27
dr_willisthe gpl driver us working good for my one ati box. so far03:28
snadgeits okay.. noticed the screen corruption after login with lightdm?03:29
snadgethe poor framerate in minecraft and oilrush?03:29
snadgethe lack of hardware video accel support? ;)03:30
KI7MTPretty easy to me, get rid of ATI :-)03:31
snadgeinability to output audio via hdmi? hehe03:31
snadgeoh yeah because nouveau is sooo much better03:32
KI7MTBoth ATI an NV have their fair share of ups and downs .. but I gotta say I'm pretty happy with NV cards, had them on all my boxes since 6.xx days on Ubuntu03:32
snadgeyeah but im not going to replace my video card, just because of buggy linux drivers03:33
KI7MTWell it's a pretty simple solution really, if it's not working, and you want it to work, somethign has to change.03:34
snadgewhich takes me back to punching someone from amd in the nuts03:34
snadgethey keep improving things just ever so slightly yo keep you from doing that03:35
KI7MTBe it the OS, The Card or something. They already ahve your hard earned $$ in their bank, shouting at them probably wont make them move any faster :-)03:35
snadgeif only i knew who to shout at03:36
snadgethey keep themselves well hidden, probably have to hire body guards to move around in public03:37
snadgefor fear of being lynched03:37
KI7MTIm sure they have a customer feedback forum somewhere.03:37
snadgei will try catalyst 12.2 when it comes out03:37
snadgeif its still broken, i will remove the card and set fire to it03:38
snadgeand post the charred remains to them03:38
KI7MTMe personally, I dont buy NV cards for at least a year or more after launch, especially if there going on a Linux Box, even on WinDoze the drivers take a good while to get sorted out.03:39
c_smith*mails a cockroach I burned alive to snadge*03:39
c_smithgah, forgot to use the /me tag and drop the asterisks..... curse my WoW playing......03:39

KI7MTkeep in mind, there's still allot of bugs and things there working on, so not even the fresh installs go without issue.03:46
ztag100jbicha: I know that, I was wondering if anything bad could happen from updating rather then a fresh install03:46
ztag100is it worse?03:46
KI7MTztag100, maybe nothing (hopefully), but who knows, the code is in a constant state of upgrade so from one day to the next could be lots of changes.03:47
ztag100ok03:47
Fyodorovnaztag100, you can clone the 11.10, so if somethings happens you are covered.03:47
ztag100I guess I'll give it my best shot03:47
jbichaztag100: probably not, it is faster to "upgrade" using the new installer CD but the new ubiquity has bugs03:47
ztag100I use minimal cds anyway03:48
KI7MTWith regaurds to upgrading, that's just my personal prefrence. I'll upgrade LTS ver to LTS ver but not the point releases or those between.03:48
Captain_Protonztag100, just make sure you have a backup ubuntu one work great for that03:49
ztag100Alright03:49
ztag100I never acutally used ubuntu one03:50
ztag100:P03:50
ztag100ubuntu one doesn't come with xubuntu?!03:51
Captain_Protonif not you can install it03:52
jbichaztag100: ubuntu one only comes by default with ubuntu, but it's easy to install it03:52
ztag100jbicha: installing now, I'm just surprised it didn't come preinstalled03:53
DaekdroomI think Ubuntu comes with Ubutu One Installer instead of Ubuntu One itself03:55
ztag100yah, the package that I just installed was the installer03:57
ztag100just wondering, does ubuntu one let me backup my system settings? or just files?04:03

adam__ Testing out Lubuntu 12.04 Beta, I keep getting errors and it wants to send a bug report, but all that does is take me to a website. Do I have to create an account just to send an error report?04:29
pangolinadam__: you do.04:34
pangolinthe developers may ask for extra info not included in the report and without creating an account linked to an email address they can't.04:34

alkisgThe gnome-classic session has a useless keyboard icon instead of an icon showing the active keyboard layout. I read the reasoning for this in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1858038 but I haven't found a bug report in launchpad about it.04:58
alkisgUnder which package should I file the bug report?04:58

Fyodorovnapseudo gnome 2 running in gnome 3, just install gnonme-shell and you get gnome 3 with the fallback.05:21

ztag100Yes, but just like xubuntu isn't the same as installing xubuntu-desktop on ubuntu... gubuntu wouldn't be the same05:23

dr_willisstill no idea .......05:26
ztag100atar2600a: are you ok?05:27
alkisgAh it appears to be a settings migration/update problem, I clean installed precise a couple of months ago and I've been seeing a useless keyboard icon since, but now that I tried gsettings reset-recursively org.gnome.gnome-panel, all is OK, I can see the layout.05:33
alkisgI can even see the time now, previously it was in the middle of the top panel, in very dark colors :)05:34
alkisgAnother problem that I still have is that the text in the bottom panel is extremely dark, and it's almost hidden over the black background of the panel05:36
alkisg...just tried with a new user account, happens there too. Now to find the package where the colors are declared, so that I file a bug there... :-/05:39
dr_willisi noticed some color and transparecy settings make that hud unuseable also05:41
jbichaalkisg: that would be either gnome-panel or light-themes, you're probably also interested in bug 82839205:43
ubottuLaunchpad bug 828392 in gnome-panel (Ubuntu) "light-themes don't display well in gnome-panel 3+" [Low,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/82839205:43
alkisgThank you jbicha, looking...05:43
alkisgYup, that's the one... at least selecting another theme makes things readable again, until hopefully the bug is somehow resolved.05:49
alkisgNice, next bugs to tackle, are (1) that lightdm doesn't offer a method to select the session language (does it?), and05:51
alkisg(2) that lightdm or some other component forces an english-only keyboard layout, instead of respecting the system-wide "us,gr" one...05:51
ztag100Alright05:51

dscasselHey guys, posted Bug #94610406:05
ubottuLaunchpad bug 946104 in Ayatana Design "multimonitor: Please give me a way to turn off sticky monitor edges" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/94610406:05
dscasselThoughts? Comments? Am I crazy for wanting this?06:06
dr_willisnot even sure what ayanta is06:07
dscasseldr_willis: Ayatana is unity, basically.06:07
dr_willisthen its compiz settings?06:08
dr_williswhats stcky monitor edges do. im not on ubintu right now06:09
dscasselThere are compiz settings, but none of them let you traverse monitors totally unimpeded.06:09
dscasselThe blog post sort of explains it: http://design.canonical.com/2012/01/launcher-reveal-prototype06:10
dscasselThere's a launcher on every monitor now.06:10
dscasselAnd in order to un-hide the launcher or get windows to half-maximize on the side of the screen more easily, the make the mouse stop at the monitor edge unless you're moving the mouse really fast.06:11
dr_willisnot ben using multi mon since unity came out. may need to try it again06:11
dscasselI'm going to post a video. You kinda have to see it.06:11
dr_willisim on my android phone . limits my options some06:13
alkisgI was trying to see if the "not able to select a session language" problem was in unity-greeter on in lightdm... so I tried installing other greeters, but none of them works?!06:13
alkisgI tried lightdm-gtk-greeter and lightdm-webkit-greeter, and I even uninstalled unity-greeter, but I was only getting the dialog to reconfigure my graphics...06:14
micahgalkisg: make sure you're on lightdm 1.1.3 or 1.1.4.is.1.1.306:15
alkisgmicahg: dpkg-query -W lightdm => lightdm1.1.4.is.1.1.3-0ubuntu106:15
dr_willissort of an odd version number06:16
micahgthere were some issues with 1.1.4 not caught before it was uploaded, nor fixable easily, so it was reverted06:17

penguin42carl0s-: You could try running alsamixer and making sure everything is on12:41
Siegel-my card model is BCM4318. its supporter by the b43 package. i followed the installation directions and terminal said it was already the newest version, thus nothing was installed. still the wifi icon on my keyboard is turned off. i go to additional drivers and it wont allow me to enable propieraty drivers12:42
carl0s-thanks penguin42 . It all looks good though, and the sliders move in tandem with the desktop's volume control.12:43
penguin42hmm12:43
Siegel-does anyone have any idea?12:47
Siegel-does anyone know anything about this command that might help me? dmesg | grep wlan12:54
Siegel-concerning my wireless network card12:54
penguin42dmesg just gives all the kernel's messages12:55
penguin42Siegel-: And  doing dmesg | grep wlan   just looks for any messages from the kernel with the text 'wlan' in12:55
penguin42Siegel-: So yeh it's kind of useful for some stuff - but what's your original problem?12:56
Siegel-penguin42: i see. then i dont see how it directly connects.12:56
Siegel-penguin42: my original problem is that since i upgraded to 12.04, my wifi icon wont turn on when i boot and my wireless cannot be enabled.12:56
Siegel-i followed the directions on how to install my model. its the b43 package and terminal said the newest version had already been installed12:57
carl0s-penguin42, it's working through the headphones! weird..13:01
carl0s-penguin42, I re-selected Speakers, and it's still not working through there.13:01
carl0s-by the way.. has anybody reported the bug of various windows not showing up in the window switcher??13:03
penguin42carl0s-: These things sometimes happen; it's possible that output is muted, or the driver is confused about how the outputs are wired13:03
Siegel-penguin42: is it possible that i am lacking some firmware?? how do i extract it13:03
penguin42Siegel-: Not sure, I don't do much wifi stuff13:03
Siegel-penguin42: ok thanks anyway13:03
carl0s-the Sound control panel doesn't show up in the alt-tab window switcher..13:04
carl0s-penguin42, well it's unmuted in the UI, so either some part of the config is left broken or perhaps the driver is. I'm sure it'll sort itself out in due course though.13:04
carl0s-when I select "Speakers", it still comes out the headphones, so I guess it's confused.13:06
Siegel-penguin42: my wireless worked automatically with 11.10. do you think a fresh install of 11.10 would sort it out?13:07
penguin42Siegel-: Possibly13:07
Siegel-penguin42: i guess ill do that anyway13:07
Siegel-just need to get a usb stick13:07
ironhalikOk, I played with alsa/pulse audio, and now Ive got nonexistend SPDIF output set as default, and cant set it back to any other :)13:15
ironhaliknot in gnome settings or alsamixer13:15
ironhalikGod, I hate ALSA :>13:17
MCR1I have a internal speaker (mono) inside my computer case (HP) - when I attach a cable to the analog output the internal speaker is disabled - is it possible to change this behaviour somewhere to not have to plug out the cable manually to turn on the internal speaker ?13:22
MCR1the Ubuntu sound settings do not allow much changes here...13:22
ironhalikIve got SPDIF output only there13:24

ironhalikhmm, there was some old gnome swiss army knife of configurations for alsa13:27
ironhalikcant remeber the name13:27

ironhalikI was stupid enough to click on SPDIF output in the soundsettings, when there were non others :>13:36
UnknownFearNGHaving problems with a dual-boot system running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Windows 7. Every time I shut down the computer from Ubuntu, I cannot boot into Ubuntu. I can get passed the login screen, then it freezes. I have to physically boot into Windows, restart the computer and then boot into Ubuntu. Anyone know why this is happening? I was going to remove Windows 7 and just run Ubuntu, but now I'm thinking I may not be able to13:53
penguin42UnknownFearNG: Well, obviously that's a bug - you should report into Launchpad13:56
UnknownFearNGBut it happened with 11.10 and 11.04 as well, not just 12.0413:57
penguin42well that's still a bug that needs reporting - otherwise it'll never get fixed!13:59
penguin42UnknownFearNG: So boot into ubuntu, make sure you have a launchpad account, and then open a terminal, and run     ubuntu-bug linux14:01
penguin42UnknownFearNG: Explain the problem in the web page that comes up, and ubuntu-bug will attach a load of information about your hardware14:01
UnknownFearNGOK, I'm doing that now14:01
ironhalikagainst what package should I file a bug if it regards the gnome sound settings menu?14:02
Daekdroomironhalik, you can run "ubuntu-bug" and follow the steps if you're unsure about the package.14:07
ironhalikThanks14:09
UnknownFearNGpenguin42: I seem to have found the error. I tried booting with a previous kernel after shut down and it worked. I think it's the latest kernel that seems to have the issue14:13
penguin42UnknownFearNG: I thought you said it happened in 11.10 as well?14:13
UnknownFearNGIt did with kernel 3.0.0.17 generic. I had 3.0.0.16 so I tried that and it worked14:14
UnknownFearNGDid 11.10 not have 3.0.0.17?14:14
funkeboneJust how unpredictable is the new beta?14:16
funkeboneAnd, through updates, will the beta eventually not be beta?14:16
yofel_UnknownFearNG: there is no 3.0.0-17 kernel14:18
yofel_only 3.0.0-16 and 3.2.0-1714:18
funkeboneI just looked at the timeline, and it looks like its slated for a beginning of May release.14:18
UnknownFearNGSorry, I have 3.2.0-17 then. It happens on that kernel, but 3.0.0-16 works fine14:18
yofel_!final | funkebone14:18
ubottufunkebone: If you install a development version of Ubuntu Precise and keep up with package updates, then you will be upgraded to the official release of 12.04 when it comes out. To make sure, type « sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade » in a terminal. Discussion and support in #ubuntu+1.14:18
funkebonethanks yofel_14:19
penguin42UnknownFearNG: Hmm I'd add those as comments into the bug report - but it could be more subtle; because your hang happens only when you boot one thing and then another, the act of bringing up the grub menu and selecting the other kernel could change it - heck anything could change it!14:20
UnknownFearNGpenguin42: On that right now, thanks for the help :)14:20
penguin42UnknownFearNG: No problem14:21
allainHey. I've uninstalled network-manager and am using /etc/network/interfaces to configure a wifi using WPA. Problem is it boots up with it setup, it locks at the desktop. If I comment everything out and then boot up then uncomment it, the restart service, all is golden. How do I start troubleshooting this?14:42
FernandoMiguelmicahg: your G+ profile is weird :S14:44

oobscurehello, I'm using Firefox alpha aka Aurora as my daily browser. I want to set it as my default browser, but it's not available via GUI under Settings>System>Details>default applications. I created a .desktop file for Aurora, and copied it both in /usr/share/applications and .local/share/applications. That worked with regard to make Aurora show up in the global applications list, but it's still not available as a default web browser choice15:22

marvrllHi. I have just ran do-release-upgrade (from 10.04 LTS to 12.04-beta1 LTS) and I'm wondering what will happen with my ppa's forr lucid? they will got automagically "converted" to precise?21:52
marvrllI have ppa for nginx, mpd, and xorg-edgers21:54
DaekdroomI think they are commented out upon upgrade.21:54
DaekdroomYou have to check whether they are available for precise first.,21:54
pangolinDaekdroom: marvrll correct, all PPA's  get commented out and not used for the upgrade.21:55
atari2600aokay now software-center got magically removed22:02
FernandoMiguellol22:02
marvrllwhoa22:03
atari2600aevery release cycle22:03
ESphynxguys, how does one build a 32 bit package on a 64 bit machine, with multiarch?22:03
atari2600aEVERY FREAKING ONE22:03
jpdsatari2600a: Hi.22:03
atari2600akey packages manage to remove themselves from existence22:03
Fyodorovnaatari2600a, you probably removed something that removed it as well, were you looking.22:03
atari2600ajpds, do I know you?22:03
atari2600aFyodorovna, any removes I've done were autoremoves22:03
atari2600athis is a fresh install22:04
jpdsatari2600a: Do you have the ubuntu-desktop package installed?22:04
atari2600ajpds, dear god I hope so22:04
Fyodorovnaatari2600a, could of happened with a install as well.22:04
atari2600aokay what the hell it was gone22:04
atari2600ahow does that even happen22:04
jpdsatari2600a: Not sure, but you should always check it's there before upgrading.22:04
atari2600aI DIDN'T UPGRADE22:05
atari2600a*unless you mean a non-dist-upgrade22:05
atari2600a this explains why Ubuntu One was magically missing as well though22:05
atari2600aI don't get it...what could have removed it...22:05
atari2600amaybe ubuntu-restricted extras or ubuntu-restricted-addons?22:06
jpdsNo.22:06
Fyodorovnaatari2600a, if your having so many problems maybe you should ask if running a development is wise, at least for a stable emotional state.22:08
atari2600askype maybe?22:18
jpdsatari2600a: No, I have that installed.22:19
zzecoolatari2600a: read this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=164140022:19
zzecoolits for ppl like you whining  because they didnt knew22:19
zzecool:)22:19
zzecoolnow on you will know :)22:20
zzecoolAnd one more hind is when using an laph or Beta stick to the main archive and not your local mirrors as they get lazy with the updates22:21
zzecooland gives you more "partial update" errors22:21
zzecoolcause the dependencies not fulfilled22:22
marvrllokay, now grub-pc configurator is asking me which of my partition (or disk - I've got only one - sda) is GRUB install device... i have /dev/sda (disk) /dev/sda1 (/boot) and /dev/sda3 (/)22:32
marvrllwhich to choose?22:32
marvrll /dev/sda, I think?22:33
jpdszzecool: Who said the mirrors were lazy?22:33
zzecooli did22:33
jpdszzecool: You know that they're a community run effort and most are set to sync every 6 hours?22:34
marvrllhelp?22:35
zzecooljpds: no i dont know that but i had serious problems with some locals22:35
ActionParsnipmarvrll: set it to /dev/sda   as you only have 1 drive22:35
jpdszzecool: Then contact the admins and let them know.22:35
zzecoolthere were 1 or 2 days old22:35
marvrllActionParsnip: done. thanks.22:35
jpdszzecool: As I said, contact the admins, they're the only ones that can fix it.22:36
zzecooljpds: when someone is having dependencies problem and we are here trying to find a fix  , im not going to contact anyone  im just advice to use the main and 99% of the time works22:38
zzecooli know what you trying to do22:38
zzecooldont be afraid the testers are not so many to introduce any problem and the final update  on the release date22:39
jpdszzecool: No, as a mirror admin myself, I like to be told when there are problems.22:39
zzecoolim not giving this advice on #ubuntu22:39
zzecooljpds: i see22:42
jakkohow do I get the same dock behavior in 12.04?22:58
jakkoin 11.10 the dock would auto hide in fullscreen22:59
Daekdroomjakko, System settings > Appearance > Behaviour23:01
jakkoi don't wan tit always hidden. that's the only option I see23:03
jakkoin 11.10 it remained visible unless an app was full screen23:03
Daekdroomjakko, you're after 'dodge active windows' option, which was removed for good23:05
jakkowell that sucks23:06
glosolijakko: even there were many complains, it won't come back :)23:07
jakkoI found it to be good feature WHen I use the window snap i get the full screen23:08
jakkohaving to apps open in snap side by side makes it uneven with the dock23:09
glosolijakko: I did too :) Now I'm just trying to get used to Always Shwon23:09
glosoliShown''23:09
jakkono way to manually hide the doskc ?23:11
jakkodock23:11
glosoliyou can't either it is always shown are hidden23:12
glosolihidden = auto hidden23:12
jakkoand there is no way to put the dock at the bottom?23:13
Daekdroomjakko, not by default. There is a modified version of Unity that has the Launcher at the bottom, but it's not working with Precise's Unity AFAIK23:16
Daekdroom*as far as I know23:16
filo1234hi all, I'm looking for a problem using gphpedit, it doesn't create a new file, btw I'm using lubuntu now and I'll like to know if this issue is lxde related or afflict gnome too, so can someone install gphpedit and say me if gets same problem? thanks23:25

KI7MTI'm testing Ubuntu ISO installs in VirtualBox, currently on UB-DESK-AMD64, and my monitor type is not being identified, nor can I change the resolution beyond 1024x768, any ideas?23:31
FernandoMiguelKI7MT: install vb tools23:32
KI7MTOk,. let me give that a whirl.23:34
KI7MTFernandoMiguel, Ok, I've installed them, do i need to reboot the box, or just log out & back in ?23:40
FernandoMiguelreboot vm23:40
KI7MTkk23:44
zutiwhat would be the way to compile wine with 12.04? build-dep doesn't get the needed libraries23:47
glosolizuti: why would you need to compile ?23:48
zutithe included version doesn't work for me as well as the ones i previously compiled. don't know why, would like to compare23:50
KI7MTFernandoMiguel, ok, now the monitor is saying it's VBX, but Im unable to change anything in the display properties.23:50
KI7MTIn fact I can't even close the display properties box now.23:51
zutiglosoli: also to apply patches if need be...23:51
glosolizuti: hmm what exactly doesn't work ?23:51
FernandoMiguelzuti: with multi arch mixed on that, it gets way trickier23:52
KI7MTIt finally let me change things, however, its still stuck at a mx res of 1024x76823:52
FernandoMiguelKI7MT: change to the size you want and refresh the HOST size23:52
jiohdiI put in do-release-upgrade, trying to get 12.04 beta, but got, no new upgrade available23:52
jiohdiwhy/23:52
jiohdi?23:53
zutiglosoli: i have just been testing with a few installed games, and they seem to be failing left and right compared to a few days ago on old setup23:53
Num83rGuyDoes anyone know what is blocking the nvidia drivers from working?23:53
glosolizuti: maybe because of new wine ?23:53
FernandoMigueljiohdi: add -d23:53
zutiglosoli: was using rc4 before23:53
jiohdidon't upgrades block new drivers, you may have to re-install nvidia drivers?23:54
glosolizuti: aa sorry :) got the same strange problems as teamviewer worked fine on Oneiric, on Precise not that fine23:54
zutiFernandoMiguel: yup, i noticed. fun fun :)23:54
jiohdithanks FernandoMiguel  :)23:54
KI7MTFernandoMiguel, I figured it out, you have to be in full-screen-mode to get the higher resolutions.23:55
Num83rGuyNah, they install fine and the modules load but are blocked by nouveau. uninstalling nouveau uninstalls most if not all thing that use X.23:56
Num83rGuyTrying to figure out how to block nouveau from loading so that the nvidia drivers can work.23:57
zutiglosoli: yep... would be nice to compile the version i previously had and check if everything works. i see even the winehq wiki is telling to build-dep wine1.4:i386 on 12.04, but that's a no go.23:57
Num83rGuyPerhaps I need to do it another way.23:57
Num83rGuyI haven't seen reports of this either.23:58
Danawar2Hey Ubuntu#1 How do i change 12.04 to gnome?23:58
Num83rGuyMaybe it's only me.23:58
ActionParsnipdanawar2: Ubuntu 12.04 already has gnome if you are not using Xubntu, Lubuntu or Kubuntu23:59
oldos2erNum83rGuy: how are you trying to install them? Recommded way is to run jockey-gtk23:59
Danawar2My is using unity23:59
Num83rGuyThat would be it.23:59
_MarcusHow much memory does 12.04 take up?23:59
