vegerbug #799460 is not being caused by akregator (kdepim), but by an other application of which I am not sure (nspluginviewer/firefox/???). What to do with this report? Just setting the kdepim status to invalid seems a bit harsh to me...09:08

matthew-parlettehey all, I'm working on bug 950006, which appears to have all error messages included and I can't find any duplicates based on the error text, is there anything else I need to do on this before confirming it?19:08

bdmurraylol21:45
yofelnice one :D21:50
mdeslaurhehe21:51
JohnNapsterhello22:50
JohnNapsterthere's a critical bug in ubuntu22:51
bdmurraydo you mean one that isn't marked as critical?22:52
JohnNapsterplease listen22:54
JohnNapsterif you set your admin account to hve a blank password, you will regret it for the rest of your life22:55
JohnNapsterbecause you will not be able to log into your admin user account once you reboot your machine22:55
JohnNapsteri tried EVERYTHING22:56
hggdh? why not sudo?22:56
JanCI think the only bug there is that you could set an empty password22:56
hggdhby 'admin' I understand root22:56
JohnNapsternope22:56
JohnNapsterby admin i mean an administrator account22:57
JohnNapsternot root22:57
hggdhan account that is a member of the admin group, right?22:57
JohnNapsteradmin = administrator type account (not standard)22:57
JohnNapsteryes22:57
jalcineYou should be able to reset the password of the account using sudo though,22:57
JohnNapsterlike how ??22:57
jalcineif you have another account in the sudoers group.22:57
JohnNapsteri don+t22:58
hggdhok. One way out of this mess, right now, is to boot into recovery22:58
JohnNapsterthat's my problem22:58
JanClog in to the rescue console22:58
JohnNapsterokay just tell me and i'll try at reboot22:58
JanCwell, boot into the rescue console22:58
JohnNapsterhow?22:58
JanCJohnNapster: hold shift while booting, then choose the appropriate option in the boot menu22:59
JohnNapsterplease bare with me, i am really dumb :)22:59
hggdh(1) reboot; (2) hold the SHIFT key until you see the GRUB boot menu; (3) select recovery22:59
JohnNapsterok22:59
hggdhyou will be put into a console22:59
JohnNapsterthen what should i do?23:00
hggdhas root. Then, you enter "passwd <your account>",23:00
hggdhwhere <your account> is the one you do not have a password23:00
JohnNapsterjust like that?23:00
JanCit will give you a menu, choose the root shell option23:00
JohnNapsterso like   abc123 myaccountname   ??23:01
hggdhthen you enter the new password. It is a VERY GOOD idea to make it the same you had before23:01
JohnNapsterno sudo in front or some other command?23:01
JanCit gives you a root shell  ;)23:01
JohnNapsteri see23:01
hggdhlike 'passwd hggdh', where 'hggdh' is the account23:01
JohnNapsteri see23:01
hggdhnow23:01
JohnNapsterokay now i get it... nw i have  question23:02
JanCand yes, you can disable/restrict that option in the grub boot menu  ;)23:02
JohnNapsterwhy don't u block making a blank password?23:02
hggdhit is really NOT a very good idea to have an admin-capable account without password, EVEN if the machine is at home, in a safe23:02
hggdhbecause there are uses for it23:02
JohnNapsteryeah, like if you anna break everything like i did23:03
JanChggdh: I disagree that there are uses for 99.99% of users that use the GUI installer23:03
hggdhthis is a bug, though: an account member of the admin group should NEVER be allowed not to have a password23:03
JohnNapsterplease inforce that23:03
hggdhJanC: I am not discussing the merit of password-less accounts ;-) I frankly do not see any reason for them, at all23:04
JohnNapsterbecause otheerwise we experience nasty effects (like not being able to login to the admin type account)23:04
hggdhyes, this is an usage issue (user expectation). This should not be allowed23:05
JohnNapsterif we set a blank password23:05
JanChggdh: oh, I can see uses for them, but not for members of group admin in Ubuntu  ;)23:05
hggdhthere is a thread, somewhere, about this. JohnNapster, what is your Ubuntu version?23:06
* hggdh thinks this is a bit recent23:06
JohnNapstercan you guys force the user not being able to set a blank password in the User Accounts section for the group admin accounts??23:06
JohnNapstermy version is 11.1023:06
hggdhthanks. JohnNapster, I believe you have ways of pinging us here if you have an issue during the resetting of the password. Please holler if so23:07
JohnNapsteri'll try your suggestion23:08
JohnNapsterbrb23:08
hggdhsome sort of decision must be taken (either correcting the error you get when you try to 'sudo', or not allowing a password-less admin account)23:08
JanCJohnNapster: and please file a bug report about this23:08
JohnNapsteroh and about that bug... are you gonna fix it?23:08
JohnNapsterplease ou do it23:08
hggdhif you open the bug, why, yes, we will :-)23:08
JohnNapsteri am very limited on this machine23:09
JohnNapstersomeone ought to do this23:09
JohnNapsteri can't, really23:09
JohnNapsterhggdh: would you do the honors?23:09
hggdhJohnNapster: I will try to reproduce. If I can, I will (may be related to 11.10, only, and I will have to install it)23:10
* hggdh thinks this sounds like a regression23:11
JohnNapsteri can get into the recovery console by Ctl+Alt+F423:12
JohnNapsteri did what you said and it spitted out  command mypassword123   not found23:13
JohnNapsterand then Alt+F7 to come back23:13
JohnNapsterand yes, i was doing the thing u said as root23:14
JohnNapsterroot@Machine   mypassword123 myaccountname123423:15
JohnNapsterand it says  mypassword123: command not found23:15
JohnNapsteranyother suggestion?23:16
hggdhpasswd account23:17
hggdhpasswd is the command23:18
JohnNapsteroh23:18
JohnNapstersilly me23:18
hggdhJohnNapster: let's say your account is named 'john'23:18
JohnNapsterok23:18
hggdhso you type in 'passwd john'23:18
JohnNapsteroohh23:18
JohnNapsterso you mean like  passwd john mysecretpassword123   ?23:19
hggdhand, again, it is a VERY good idea to set the password to what it was before23:19
JohnNapsterok, gotcha23:19
hggdhthere are other parts of the desktop experience that will be happier this way23:19
JohnNapsterthey shouldn't be "happieer"23:23
JohnNapsterthey should adapt to the new password23:23
JohnNapsterubuntu is very broken in this regard23:23
hggdhthey do. But you are outside the desktop, right now23:23
JohnNapsternot really23:23
hggdhactually, Ubuntu (or Linux, in general) is not broken on this...23:24
JohnNapsteri am in a guest account in firefox23:24
JohnNapstertring to get some help from ou guys23:24
JohnNapstertring23:24
JohnNapstergod dammit :)23:24
JohnNapstertrying*23:24
hggdhheh23:25
hggdhJohnNapster: I am confused. If you are under a guest account, how can you run the password change process?23:25
JohnNapsterCtrl+Alt+F423:26
hggdhthat would not really help, since you cannot login as root23:27
JohnNapstergets me into the console and then i get out by Alt+F723:27
JohnNapsteri can!23:27
JohnNapsteri already did login as root that way23:27
hggdhso, so you CAN login as root. Did you change the password for your account?23:28
JohnNapsterit didn't work23:28
hggdhplease give us the exact command you executed, and the EXACT output23:28
JohnNapsterok let me retype23:29
JohnNapstertoo much to retype...23:30
JohnNapsterit was like so...23:30
JohnNapsteri typed   su23:30
JohnNapsterand then i was root23:30
hggdhand?23:31
JohnNapsterthen i typed  passwd and pressed enter23:31
hggdhNOOOOOO23:31
JohnNapsterit said   please type new UNIX password23:31
hggdhpasswd <account>23:31
JohnNapsteroh23:31
hggdhyou most probably just changed the root password23:31
JohnNapsterwait23:31
JohnNapsteri did yeah23:31
hggdhbetter not forget it...23:32
JohnNapsterokay now i did it23:33
JohnNapsterlet me try this baby23:33
JohnNapstermy sincere condolences, but this does not work guys23:38
JohnNapsteri am still not able to login to my admin group account23:38
JohnNapsteri am logged in as guest23:38
JohnNapsterand i can't even mount my usb key23:39
hggdhdid you login with your account?23:40
JohnNapsteryes23:40
JohnNapsterbut it threw me out23:40
JohnNapsteri had no choice but to pick the Guest account at the Unity login23:41
hggdhwhat happened?23:41
JohnNapsteror how it's called23:41
JohnNapstersome text was displayed after i clicked on my account .... you know  where it says  blah blah blah[OK]23:42
JohnNapsterand then it put me right back to the login screen23:43
bdmurrayblah blah blah isn't very descriptive23:43
hggdhso we go back to resetting the password on your admin account23:43
JohnNapstermy account (the admin group one) did not have the password field... just a button labeled Login23:43
hggdhwhich means it does not have a password23:44
JohnNapsterbt i must hve23:44
hggdhI thought this was what we asked you to do23:44
JohnNapsteri changed it23:44
hggdhlet's do it again23:44
JohnNapsterlogged in as root, did the  passwd john password12323:44
hggdhno23:44
hggdhpasswd john23:44
JohnNapsteri mean passwd john23:45
JohnNapsteryeah23:45
hggdhok23:45
JohnNapsterthen when it asked i typed the password23:45
hggdhnow STILL on the console, log out, and log in as john23:45
JohnNapsterlike type  exit  to get out of root ?23:46
hggdhyes, and get back to the console login23:46
JohnNapsterlike which console login?23:46
hggdhctrl-alt-f123:47
JohnNapsteroh that one23:47
JohnNapsterok23:47
JohnNapstermy machine name is Monk23:47
JohnNapsterit says  Monk login23:47
hggdhyes23:48
hggdhnow type in your account name23:48
hggdhthen you will be prompted for a password, type the new password in23:48
JohnNapsteryou know what?23:49
hggdhshoot :-)23:49
hggdhit did not work...23:49
JohnNapsteri typed    john  in there and i had to type my password23:49
JohnNapsteri typed the one i set before23:49
JohnNapsterit worked!23:49
hggdhheh23:49
hggdhOK23:49
JohnNapsterbut i still can't login to that account at the GUI level23:50
JohnNapsteri am not even asked for password23:50
JohnNapsterthis is a terrible bug23:50
hggdhnope23:50
JohnNapsterwhy did i make the account password blank, oh for the love of god why23:51
JohnNapsterok what do you propose now?23:52
hggdhas root, enter "sudo restart lightdm" <- you WILL lose your gueste session. Then login again, and come here again23:52
JohnNapsterok23:52
JohnNapstersee ya ;)23:52
hggdhwe will be here23:52
JohnNapster_htorhello23:55
JohnNapster_hggdh: thank you a million times!!23:55
JohnNapster_now i am logged into my   john account23:55
JohnNapster_thanks so much23:55
