[00:00] Daekdroom: are you familiar with ATI ? [00:01] I currently own a HD5450 [00:01] Daekdroom: have you ever got problem that installing drivers from ati and built them debs makesakes you use Unity 2D ? [00:01] because associated file /usr/lib/fglrx/etc/OpenCL/vendors/amdocl32.icd (of link group x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf) doesn't exist. [00:01] some kind of this error while setup [00:02] http://bpaste.net/show/24816/ [00:02] I don't think I've ever tried to use fglrx with this card. [00:02] I prefer the opensource drivers. [00:02] aa .. [00:02] I wish I could kill person who's resposinble for FGLRX in Ubuntu [00:02] :) [00:03] gotta go.. bye [00:24] haha poor glosoli === mikester01 is now known as mikester01|AFK [00:32] Is anybody seeing an issue where two icons are showing up on the launcher for applications? [04:25] vic20 used 6502. [04:25] got a vic 20 also [04:25] me too. [04:25] but I tink we're off topic now :P [04:25] timex sinclare hanging on the wall. [04:40] hello! [04:41] I'm setting up a file server for my parents... one I plan to put in place and never touch again unless needed. I'm considering on doing 12.04 beta 1 so I can cut out some of the wait-till-released time. [04:41] once it's finally released, if I do an upgrade, would it bump the beta to final release? [04:41] thats how apt wirks. [04:41] thought so, but I wanted to make sure [04:42] if there's likely to be something different with the final release vs the beta I'd install I'd rather wait [04:42] Roasted: you are using the same repos as the official release will use so you will upgrade seamlessly [04:42] but for a fileserver do you really need 12.04 [04:42] dr_willis: i would, lts is niiiice [04:42] dr_willis, no, I don't - but I'd rather do 12.04 since it has the longer LTS cycle [04:43] it could break between now and release ;) [04:43] it could, but I'll take that chance [04:43] as long as I can bump it to what I'd get out of the final release, I'm happy [04:43] wrong tab, sorry [04:43] or do lts to lts whrn its released [04:43] well [04:43] I kind of need it done now [04:44] so I'm etiher going 11.10 or 12.04, tonight [04:44] would rather do 12 just to forget about it, ssh into it later, upgrade, reboot, done [04:46] Roasted: go to 12.04 [04:46] Roasted: there are some minor bugs, but system is usable [04:47] glosoli, that's what I'm thinking [04:47] especially for a file server.. pfft. [04:47] I'd probably think twice if it were for work and needed to serve 4 thousand people :P [04:47] Roasted: for example some people report screen corruptions after entering username and password, it happens only desktop loads and some other problems, but all in all, i am running it on a main machine, and system is usable [04:48] only until desktop loads'' [04:48] Roasted: may I ask you which VGA do you have ? [04:48] Roasted: do-release-upgrade works ok remotely as well. [04:48] i see a gfx glitz on login. ;) [04:48] glosoli, I'm not sure. it's some onboard thing, likely intel. [04:48] dr_willis: same here :) really anoying for me, but can live with that [04:48] glosoli, I'm not even sure I'd use unity. I'd probably put lxde on it. [04:48] Roasted: so you are likely to have less problems than me [04:48] glosoli, what do you have? [04:49] ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 1GB [04:49] sorry to hear that [04:49] ATI makes me cringe :< [04:49] Nah, I am not sorry ;D Seems like ATI made some pretty good fixes [04:49] ATI... [04:49] made... fixes? [04:49] get out... [04:49] Can compare it to nVidia [04:49] :) [04:49] nVidia is a more of a mess now [04:49] I doubt it. No offense, but I wouldn't rate ATI anywhere near the ball park of Nvidia. ;) [04:50] Nvidia just works on all of my systems. [04:50] I actually just returned an ATI card for my HTPC the other week. [04:50] Roasted: Try buying new Nvidia card. [04:50] glosoli, I did [04:50] three of them actually [04:50] I did three new builds about a week ago [04:50] Does it has 2 gpus ? [04:50] ati gpl drivers at leaat work now for me ;) [04:50] glosoli, 2 physical graphics cards? [04:50] Optimus [04:50] nVidia Optimus [04:50] isn't supported for Linux :))))) [04:51] glosoli, do you use FGLRX [04:51] It makes nVidia suck so much that it isn't even close to being as good as ATI :) [04:51] or open source drivers [04:51] FGLRX [04:51] works just fine [04:51] ya know [04:51] I can't even tell if you're being sarcastic or not [04:51] I am not :) [04:51] Works perfectly [04:51] I hate to sound like that but ATI is just so bad with Linux, and all of this news about them laying off more and more Linux devs and FGLRX failing more and more [04:51] Much more better than Open source drivers [04:51] I just can't take this conversation seriously. [04:51] but hey [04:52] agree to disagree [04:52] ;) [04:52] Roasted: Well, you just say that from your past interested, I say that as these days everyday user [04:52] past? [04:52] you do realize I said I returned an ATI card... last week, right? [04:52] it failed even a matter of.. six days ago [04:52] popped an Nvidia in, bam [04:53] worked great, HTPC is back up and running without issue [04:53] but hey, use what works. I know I do. [04:53] Roasted: what was wrong with it ? :D [04:53] terrible playback, no audio over hdmi [04:53] everything was choppy [04:53] if I moved the mouse, it froze the video for a few seconds [04:53] Roasted: hmm, ATI takes an action for audio ? [04:53] as if moving the mouse alone shocked the card enough that it couldn't keep up [04:53] Roasted: which model it was ? [04:54] I'm not sure offhand [04:54] it was recommended to me for HTPC usage [04:54] it was a 1 gig card [04:54] 5 something [04:54] I didn't give enough of a damn to look further into it when a few nights went by with no additional help on forums, irc, etc, other than "dude just get an nvidia and be done" [04:54] I did, done deal. ;) [04:55] hmm [04:55] Roasted: did you tryed fglrx ? [04:55] if you did, was it the one in ubuntu repos ? [04:55] yeah, I tried the open source first though [04:55] no fglrx ? :D [04:55] but I did fglrx afterwards [04:55] The one in repos ? :D [04:55] it was what was ever in additional drivers menu [04:55] Roasted: you should thank for trolls how stupid they are [04:55] :) [04:55] Didin't recommended you to use binary which had 12.1 version which fixed most of the ati problems [04:56] :)))) [04:56] actually... [04:56] 12 rings a bell... [04:56] I remember reading that, that 11 had quite a few bugs [04:56] It's Ubuntu's fault not updating fglrx :))) in repos [04:56] I kind of forget, but I feel like 12 is what I used. [04:57] 12.2 is out 2 days ago, and 12.3will be out in 3 weeks :)) [04:57] No you didin't [04:57] it wasnt .2 [04:57] definitely .1 [04:57] It wasnt 12.1 [04:57] pretty positive about that [04:57] if you used repos :) [04:57] I am sure for that :) [04:57] unless yuo built debs by yourself you used 11.11 [04:57] I used several different drivers that users recommended to me [04:57] open source first [04:57] then additional drivers menu [04:58] and then nothing to try else [04:58] then I downloaded a package externally [04:58] good lord [04:58] let me type [04:58] Roasted: I just know how troll'y this community sometimes can be :) [04:58] First time I got here, there were people who told me the same [04:58] get nvidia and bla bla bla :) [04:58] glosoli, I've been on linux for a number of years [04:58] <3 nvidia [04:58] and there's one thing that's always been true [04:58] ATI has always, always lacked in support [04:58] always [04:59] today, the gap is even wider than it used to be [04:59] Roasted: Yes it did, i have been 5 years :) [04:59] if ATI works for you, use it [04:59] but I went with Nvidia because it works for me [04:59] at this point, I wouldn't even consider ATI again after the run ins I had with them [04:59] I like popping the card in, clicking install, and being done with tinkering [04:59] Roasted: I don't blame you for going nvidia, because it took su much for ati to release new drivers which worked [04:59] :) [04:59] I'm glad to hear they may have, finally, FINALLY come out of the we-suck era [04:59] i share the fglrx pain [04:59] and it happened only this friggin year.. [05:00] however, I still wouldn't come within 10 yards of one of their cards [05:00] I have no idea what prompted me to even consider them again with the HTPC build [05:00] but hey, lesson learned [05:00] snadge: I share Ubuntu problem now, as It doesn't update fglrx in repos [05:00] there is a ppa with up to date fglrx driver [05:00] ubuntu swat or something [05:01] hmm its out of date too [05:01] snadge: if you wan't to crash your system [05:01] you should go for it [05:01] and that ppa is old [05:01] if you want crashed system use xorg edgers :))) [05:01] for bleeding edge xorg stuff and fglrx newest [05:02] yeah edgers has the latest fglrx.. you might be able to install just fglrx from that [05:02] by enabling the repo. installing only fglrx.. then disabling it again [05:02] I can't wait for open source drivers to catch up [05:02] it'd be a great day [05:02] didn't broadcom just open source their drivers?? [05:02] otherwise.. just download from amd.. then use --buildpkg Ubuntu/precise [05:02] snadge: if you read notes for edgers ppa you wouldn't even try that :) [05:02] that works for me [05:03] Roasted: it will never catch up :) [05:03] glosoli, someday, it will [05:03] glosoli: that probably only applies to x components which fglrx does not depend on [05:03] Roasted: some day ATI/Nvidia drivers will me more further, and OSS drivers will catch the state of 2012 :D [05:03] snadge: Read the note. [05:03] i did [05:03] glosoli, if that's your mentality, you shouldn't be using linux my friend. ;) [05:04] Roasted: It's programmers logic. [05:04] "logic" [05:04] They will catch only if ATI or Nvidia will give them source. [05:04] Other than that, they will be like a tail for dog [05:04] hopefully some day they do [05:04] they cant due to licensing and patent reasons [05:04] patent reasons [05:04] gah [05:04] As I said [05:04] the missing components in the free drivers are missing for that reason [05:04] :))) [05:04] My friend [05:05] the patent system is so bad [05:05] I used to read tech news sites religiously [05:05] but it gets so old [05:05] apple suing another company, etc [05:05] yea :D [05:05] apple suing motorola and google ;D [05:05] nvidia recently joined the linux foundation, which should help things get better in the nvidia camp [05:05] for letting to see documentations [05:05] ActionParsnip, very nice [05:05] ActionParsnip: And friggin ati will never join :D? [05:05] glosoli: you need to direct your rage at amd.. its not really anything to do with ubuntu devs.. as far as im aware, they may receive a limited amount of assistance from amd.. but from what i can tell.. they dont [05:06] and theres no direct avenue of complaint to the linux developer(s) who work on fglrx at amd [05:06] haha, yeah [05:06] snadge: well at least they can update fglrx in repos don't they ? [05:06] glosoli: dunno, maybe [05:06] contacting linux/amd support is like that man Peggy on the credit card commercials :/ [05:06] well.. fglrx-updates *should* contain the latest driver.. within a week of its release [05:06] snadge: well it contains 11.11 LD [05:06] :D [05:06] its taken ages for broadcom to give decent support too [05:06] but it doesnt.. fglrx-updates seems to be like one version newer.. and still old [05:06] glad that got sorted [05:07] ActionParsnip: in fact, i found it strange that AMD sponsored some of gimp technologies :) [05:07] ActionParsnip, yeah, I noticed broadcom was less headache infatuated as of recent. [05:07] ActionParsnip, did they open soruce their driver? [05:07] glosoli, wow, really? [05:07] yeah, used to be an always ndiswrapper thing [05:07] For all of the -1's AMD has racked up, finally, there's a +1 [05:07] Roasted: "MD SPONSORS FURTHER WORK ON OPENCL SUPPORT IN GEGL2011-11-28 " [05:07] at least amd allow you to build precise packages, from the installer.. afaik, proprietary nvidia download doesnt build .debs [05:08] AMD ain't that bad, trolls are more bad. [05:08] theres just bugs in fglrx that annoy me.. like the window title bug [05:08] http://www.phonearena.com/news/Nvidia-joins-Linux-Foundation-is-there-hope-for-driver-development_id27845 [05:08] and the minecraft crashes on exit bug [05:08] or the, hey your entire video performance sucks, bug [05:08] well it doesn't for me :) [05:08] video is actually pretty good [05:09] snadge, beg to differ. [05:09] doesn't for snage [05:09] just went through hell with them last week. [05:09] Roasted: run glxgearsa [05:09] Roasted: run glxgears [05:09] too late [05:09] and paste output of somewhere [05:09] :) [05:09] already got a working system with nvidia [05:09] OH BURN [05:09] Roasted: Nvidia has glx gears [05:09] alright I'm done being a prick. :P [05:09] :))))))) [05:09] i have a htpc which uses fglrx.. and xvba [05:09] I'm too tired to give a damn about gfx card vs gfx card anymore [05:09] it wasnt that difficult to set up [05:09] Roasted: so stop trolling then [05:09] snadge, nor was my nvidia setup. I just clicked install. [05:09] glosoli, you're trolling too. [05:10] Roasted: I am giving arguments, as I SAID IT WORKS FROM NOW. [05:10] DIDIN"T SAID IT WORKED BEFORE [05:10] theres a ppa for the xbmc-xvba fork.. so thats an apt-get install [05:10] omg caps [05:10] Roasted: caps for you to see the parts which you didin't see [05:10] but yeah.. its annoying waiting for bugs to get fixed.. and they never do [05:10] I saw it [05:11] snadge: well it will be anoying as long as people report only to launchpad :) [05:11] snadge: I just use vlc + remote management then control with my phone [05:11] snadge: there is ati irc, and there are people who report directly to ATI :) [05:11] :) [05:11] :) :) :) [05:11] :) :) [05:12] troll :) [05:12] :) [05:12] I'm not a troll. I'm just REALLY happy. :) :) [05:12] i want some of those drugs hehe [05:12] I'm high on life brah [05:12] SO [05:12] to change the subject rather drastically [05:13] so I'm engagement ring shopping... came home and tried to find a place to hide the ring magazines I got at the jewelry shop today so my gf didn't see... [05:13] found a 1980's stash of pr0n in the basement ceiling [05:13] Discussion and support for Precise Pangolin < [05:13] we've only been in this house for about 6 weeks... evidently the old man we bought it from didn't notice [05:13] Roasted: do you see the topic ? [05:13] HEY WHY DONT YOU GO POST ON AN ATI FORUM [05:14] :) :) [05:14] fglrx is in the discusion of precise [05:14] ati. forum. :) [05:14] because ATI no longer exists.. they were bought out by AMD years ago ;) [05:14] :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) [05:14] Roasted: why don't you get lost with you trolling ? [05:14] :) [05:20] bedtime. farewell friends. [05:20] glosoli, <3 [05:21] :) :) [05:22] i just upgraded to precise and when i access a sftp node with gvfs the POSIX mount in ~/.gvfs doesnt show up anymore [05:36] can i build this without rebuilding the kernel http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/dri-devel/2012-February/019283.html ? === mikester01 is now known as mikester01|AFK [07:37] hmm.. how do i figure out why i cant install the amsn package? [07:37] i stupidly did a dist-upgrade without looking and it was removed.. now it just says its no longer available [07:40] oh it was deleted [07:41] thats nice [07:42] snadge, did you get it back? [07:44] well.. its been deleted from debian and hence ubuntu.. because apparently it hasn't been maintained in 5 years [07:45] skype was removed also.. im trying to figure out why [07:45] its i386 only.. and a bunch of i386 multilib stuff got removed [07:46] snadge, I have skype on i386 here not sure about 64 [07:47] snadge, you can download and install skype for linux here http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/linux/ [07:54] snadge: don;t upgrade :) [07:54] snadge: don't [07:56] too late [07:56] so now im trying to reinstall the 386 multiarch crap so that i can get skype to work again [07:57] skype should just release a proper 64bit version.. assholes [07:57] its the only thing on this system that requires all that crap [07:57] snadge: Well you just wait for updates [07:58] snadge: after new updates they will fix dependencies, you install them and you will be able to install ia32-libs-multiarch [07:58] it will take half a day probably more or less [07:58] Happened for me once ;D [07:58] Now I always read what it says ;D [07:59] yeah.. i think im just going to give up on linux [07:59] and computing in general.. find something else to do [07:59] snadge: felt this way so many times [07:59] :D [08:00] this is why we call it beta testing, [08:00] ive been beta testing linux for over a decade [08:00] dr_willis: I understand it, but me took a while for me to get that, that's my fault for switching from oneiric ;D [08:00] same for windows. [08:00] the reason i switched from oneiric.. was because its crap, and full of bugs ;) [08:01] i thought.. precise couldn't possibly be any worse.. surely [08:01] *cough* .. hehe [08:01] snadge: what's wrong in precise ? :D [08:01] nothing really.. i just like to complain.. just the usual suspects really [08:01] 12,04 has very few issues fir me so far [08:01] fglrx.. minecraft exception on exit.. poor performance [08:02] if i had an nvidia card like the rest of the known universe.. i probably would have a fraction of the issues that i do [08:02] dr_willis: for me the only thing I hate is Max Min Close buttons not on the right place when windows maximized :)) and global menu hidden... [08:02] minecraft and poor performance... seem to be common to minecraft :-) [08:02] well.. it used to work okay on oneiric [08:03] it has definitely regressed in precise [08:03] minecraft should be part of the testing suite ;) [08:03] glosoli: i saw some spplet to move them to the right hand side the other day [08:03] snadge: well you can't blame release until it's stable or can you ? [08:03] if i was a betting man.. i'd put money on minecraft not being fixed by the time precise goes final [08:03] dr_willis: It willl look ugly anyway, either it should be withhin windows, or either dodge should be back :) [08:04] I am very strict at design [08:04] no one is strict at design [08:04] I am [08:04] .toss out the old for latest fad is the mantra [08:04] ?? [08:05] seen gui design fads come and go then come back.. [08:05] im waiting for floppy disks to come back next [08:05] they never went out of style [08:06] if you have a commodore 64 anyway [08:06] i have several old pcs [08:06] although a friend of mine hooked up an audio cd player to the tape adaptor of a c64.. and recorded games as audio tracks [08:06] ;) c64 geos.. the next gnome incarnation [08:06] so he could burn the old tapes to audio cd format [08:07] dr_willis: well, Unity Design team was discussng that max min close button problem for sure in mailing list :) even got mailed accidently and getting asked how it should be solved [08:07] the min max close is underneath the launcher if autohide is not enabled? [08:07] (im just guessing at the problem, haven't seen it) [08:07] havent really oticed a problem [08:08] i tend to max, and alttab [08:09] then use menus to close. guess thats android training coming through [08:09] snadge: Launcher Always Shown [08:09] Maximize windows [08:09] and see where is max min close button [08:09] they are out of place [08:09] haha i use autohide [08:10] they doesn't seem to be in the right place, and that's not only me [08:10] :) [08:10] autohide sucks for my productivity [08:10] I open about 8 programs, [08:10] they were in the top left corner last i looked [08:10] well i prefered dodge.. but what can you do [08:10] dr_willis: and that's why it's bad :) [08:10] snadge: I did too [08:11] mirrors the location of the windows.. some would argue its worse for them to move about [08:11] but i jump around so many desktops/os's that i have learned to look ;) [08:12] ok i've got skype back.. phew [08:12] put them in the bottom left. ;) no one seems to want to use that locaztion these days [08:12] amsn is gone.. but whatever.. i can deal with that [08:13] i'll just download it from the website ;) [08:13] oh skype. thanks for the reminder [08:15] dr_willis: well, but if they started a question on mailing list, that means they also noticed problem. [08:15] hey everyone. so I dl'd PP and copied it to a USB, booted it up and was then told that the kernel uses pae and my cpu doesn't, so no pangolins for me. When did pae become default for plane-jane ubuntu? [08:15] dr_willis: it looks too cheap :) [08:16] werder: i think thats was planned to be the default in the next relesae. could be someone jumpped the gun a bit [08:17] saw it discussed on some blog sites [08:18] dr_willis: well fancy that. a quick google search gave me nothing. Looks like I get to use ubuntu minimal [08:18] werder: someone said it was a known bug. [08:18] dr_willis: is there any benefit to having pae other than being able to use more RAM? [08:19] dr_willis: ah thank you, I hope it is reversed for the LTS. [08:19] if your cpu is 64bit.. id suggest using 64bit os. [08:20] dr_willis: my comp is a 9 year old clunker laptop so no 64 bit here [08:20] I don't get the point why would anyone use PAE when they have 64bit compatible processor [08:20] aaa [08:20] :) [08:20] sorry [08:20] I just wanted to see how the beta was shaping up [08:24] I am reading insanity. Lubuntu 12.04 is going to be built with pae? What madness is this? [08:26] werder: huh? [08:28] Tm_T: exactly. I was reading the bug reports about 12.04 and pae, and apparently even the lightest official spin of ubuntu apparently needs pae as default. [08:29] huh as in what's the problem? [08:29] pae is the default 32 bit kernel now [08:29] old pcs are getting left behind it seems [08:29] yes and for an LTS that is a strange decision. [08:30] there are ways around this for really old PCs, IIRC the non-pae kernel still exists for the LTS [08:30] ^ [08:31] from their point of view dropping the non-PAE kernels in LTS made very much sense, as they have to support LTS kernels for five years [08:31] I don't think it's been dropped, it's just no longer the default for the i386 arch [08:32] not dropped, just default is with pae [08:32] https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2011-November/034498.html [08:32] micahg: it is all but dropped. The options are 1. upgrade from 11.10 or 2. install minimal non-pae and work your way up [08:32] sounds like dropper, unless they changed their decision or someone else besides the kernel-team makes those packages [08:33] I think a netinstall let's you use the non-pae kernel, anyways, we're talking about machines that are already 10+ years old in most cases [08:33] Trewas: it's not terribly difficult to drop in a different kernel, but I don't think not having an easy option for non-pae is a good move [08:34] hmm, too many negatives. I'm like sarah palin, english as a second language. [08:34] best wouldbe to install whats needed.. but space limits are an issue [08:35] oldbuntu ;-) [08:35] bbl [08:35] dr_willis: huh? I have a 40GB hard drive, plenty for any operating system. [08:36] werder: he's talking about install media, image sizes I believe [08:36] Tm_T: ah [08:38] hey, so does anyone have a workaround for the battery meter bug in gnome-shell? [08:39] Does Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (beta) have native mac wifi support for MacBookPro8,x models? [08:39] eruditehermit, xfce? [08:39] xaphir, just switch to xfce? [08:39] tried but didn't like it [08:40] eruditehermit, or abg perhaps [08:47] xaphir, what is abg? [08:49] eruditehermit, anything but gnome [08:51] tbh dr_willis my 9 year old pentium 4 even supports pae [08:51] .. [08:54] Ian_Corne: well my 9 year old pentium M 1st edition doesn't. [08:56] it's been said before, but install the non pae kernel then :) [08:56] Ian_Corne: seriously? the one that ubuntu isn't releasing for 12.04? [08:56] it's just not the default one [08:57] Ian_Corne: from my own internet scouring I have found that canonical will not be releasing a non-pae other than the minimal. [08:58] hmm [08:58] Ian_Corne: but, I have a long history of being wrong. so show me I am, I would be happy to be wrong. [09:03] I wanted to see, but i don't have a 12.04 system on hand atm [09:06] Ian_Corne: neither do I, and its not a serious issue. I just think canonical shouldn't be dropping pae for their LTS, at least for people who don't know how to roll their own. [09:06] ^dropping^adding [09:15] werder: [09:15] info linux-image-generic precise [09:15] !info linux-image-generic precise [09:15] linux-image-generic (source: linux-meta): Generic Linux kernel image. [09:19] well, i could be wrong, and the package might point to the same kernel [09:19] but i don't think the installer will work if it defaults to pae anyways [09:21] Ian_Corne: right, that's what I'm griping about. only pae which my laptop can't boot. [09:21] but [09:21] someone has already made a spinoff with non-pae. so all is fine and dandy. [10:55] why when i installed vbox-ose, did it uninstall skype? that makes zero sense [11:06] wow - is there any wifi card for linux that isnt ridled with bugs? [11:07] most if not all the ones I've been used, why? [11:11] i have found the atheros in my eeepc 900, to be pretty bug free. [11:16] ironhalik: many [11:16] ironhalik: intel tends to be good [11:17] FernandoMiguel: Intel is missing power management [11:17] is it? [11:18] nope [11:18] I had the default broadcom, on b43 - it has no power management and crappy connection [11:18] my laptops have power management [11:18] then I got a intel4965, no power management [11:18] ironhalik: ok, well in that case, either a.) accept the limitation that the linux kernel modules provide b.) do more research to find compatible cards c.) move to an OS that supports the cards you want in the way you want [11:19] ikonia: well, I did my research [11:19] and ath9k based cards are supposed to be fully featured [11:20] got some atheros 928x card, and the connection is crappy [11:20] ironhalik: ok, so they are not as supported as you want [11:20] so it goes back to the options I've given you [11:20] no, atheros is barely working [11:20] ok, so you have the 3 options I said earlier [11:20] my intel wireless on thinkpad works perfectly, at least [11:20] and both linuxwireless and ubuntu wiki claim its ok [11:21] ikonia: dont get me wrong, Im not bitching :) [11:21] ironhalik: you appear to be [11:21] I dont mean to [11:21] just that the info is scattered, unreliable [11:21] cards will respond different to different enviornments, I have atheros/cisco cards years ago, they where fantastic. [11:22] it's un fair to say "they don't work" as clearly they do to get past the testing and for other people, however they are not working for either your setup or how you want them to [11:22] well, I tested three so far [11:23] and broadcom has known issues, ok [11:23] but the rest were more or less supposed to work nicely [11:23] especially, since the manufacturers support OSS [11:23] right now, Im determined to work out the issues in atheros [11:23] ikonia, correct; competency has an impact on installation functionality [11:26] there are those that view incompetency or failure as a qualification to achieve a judgement. I don't happen to be one of them [11:28] Hmm, Ive got three antennas in my laptop [11:28] its supposed to be for 3x3 11n cards [11:29] but with 2x2, will the antenna choice make any difference? [11:29] xaphir: I'm not juding anyone [11:29] hey guys [11:29] but the facts remain those cards/chipsets do work, they are not working in this situation so it's more likley to be something with this situation rarther then card [11:30] hey guysanyone knows how to make the wallpaper be shared on lightdm? [13:23] you can [13:23] I think.. [13:23] no personal experience though [13:24] but I don't see why you'd sit on an LTS and then upgrade to a beta.. [13:24] unless of testing ofc [13:24] how risky is it? right now, my friend is suffering from a problem which makes his box barely usable. the video card keeps hanging with one of those "[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop." errors in Xorg.0.log [13:24] I'm gambling it's software, not hardware. because the former is much cheaper to fix :-) [13:25] well... in his case, he just hates upgrading. [13:25] I was just reading about Ubuntu 12.04 no longer fitting on an iso, and I have to ask, what am I going to do with all my blank CDs? Ubuntu is the only thing I have written to a CD in the past 5 years :o [13:25] I guess I'll finally have to get a dvd writer ;) [13:25] 12.04 is DVD only? [13:25] oh, this is going to be fun [13:26] no it's not [13:26] it's fitting again [13:26] omgubuntu has an article today [13:26] The ISO is expected to be 750mb [13:26] really ? [13:26] 703 actually [13:27] Darn diddly, my blank media is 700 [13:27] 703 will probably fit [13:27] most of my CDs were 703, some were 702 [13:27] ok [13:29] At each LTS release, I burn 2 copies of ubuntu server ( 32 and 64 bit ), one minimal installer and LTS version .1 and .2. Which means, you guys need to do 4 more CD releases for me to get through this spindle :D [13:29] you can still use them to burn audio to :) [13:29] yeah, I was going to suggest that [13:30] or burn a lot of 12.04 desktop iso's and hand them out to your community [13:30] Audio ? On CD ? I think you might still be stuck in the 90s ;) [13:30] Ian_Corne, that's a good idea [13:30] except that the audio in my car is far better comming from a cd than via the aux jack [13:30] I don't have an AUX jack on my car. [13:30] neither do I [13:31] Actually, that's not true, I hacked my car last year and installed an AUX jack. Now my CDs and aux jack don't work [13:31] well the only place I use cd's is there [13:31] but the CD player is iffy now, it refused to voluntarily completely eject the last CD I put in it [13:31] I am waiting for ubuntu to run on my car stereo :) [13:32] I'd be happy with a *BSD running on it [13:32] or a Forth-based FLAC/Vorbis decoder [13:33] Are people throwing "Ubuntu is awesome" parties to ring in the new version ? [13:33] but... that's me [13:33] I think, android is your best bet [13:34] or just a dock for your phone [13:34] i hope theres an ubuntu party in brisbane australia [13:34] i want to go there and wedgie people [13:36] I am so throwing a Ubuntu 12.04 release party [13:36] Is there a guide on how to throw a release party ? [13:40] I just submitted one of those automated bug/crash reports, and then took a look at it. It shows my architecture as "amd64", even though I'm on an intel processor. Is that incorrect? Is there a difference? [13:41] quantumlemur, its just the name used for all 64 bit cpu's [13:41] amd64 included intel and amd [13:42] ah, ok [13:42] thanks [13:55] Hello. [18:52] R3dy, If you install CompizConfig Settings Manager [18:52] I don't get the thought process here. 11.10 didn't do that [18:52] sigh [18:53] you can reduce the Launcher Edge Stop Pressure [18:53] mouse scroll still not fixed in precise [18:53] do i need to reinstall 11.10 back AGAIN :/ [18:53] andrewaclt: thanks I'll try that [18:53] R3dy, I reduced this setting from 20 to 1 and it still snags, but it's insane like it was before [18:54] andrewaclt: it's fine if I throw my mouse at the next monitor with exterme predjidus [18:54] R3dy, oh, when you launch the Settings Manager, you want to filter for "Unity", select the unity plugin, and then click the "Experimental tab" [18:54] R3dy, yeah [18:54] but if I try to take a leasurly strole over to another monitor I get caught in a trap [18:54] R3dy, I was told it was a feature :( [18:55] andrewaclt: LOL [18:55] i imagine during testing they noticed how annoying it was [18:55] it's almost as if they were like "fuck it" let's see if no one notices [18:55] R3dy, No, it seems the setting has to be even higher for some models of trackpad [18:56] andrewaclt: but in 2D it doesn't do it [18:56] why can't it be the same in regular ? [18:56] well, that's useful to know [18:57] but there is some stuff that looks horrid in 2d [18:57] liek Alt+tab [18:57] R3dy, I found a bug report the other day which was basically a bunch of users complaining that on a laptop they were having issues and they had to set the Launcher Edge STop Overcome Pressure > 40 [18:58] which causes you to have to throw your mouse over with even more resolve [18:58] andrewaclt: I don't understand, I notice nothing when changing that value [18:58] 1 - 80, makes no difference to me [18:58] in what I see [18:59] When your mouse snags, it should require less pressure to move it off, so it'll snag for less time [18:59] if the number is higher or lower? [18:59] lower [18:59] higher means more pressure, snags for longer [18:59] Are you on a trackpad? [18:59] k that's a little bit differnt [18:59] nope [19:00] yeah that's noticple, this is usable at least now [19:00] thanks andrewaclt [19:00] R3dy, here is some discussion https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/946104 [19:00] Launchpad bug 946104 in Ayatana Design "multimonitor: Please give me a way to turn off sticky monitor edges" [High,Triaged] [19:01] the thing is I think it's only there in the first place because of the dual unity launchers [19:01] Yep! [19:01] if you boot into 2D mode, one launcher, and no lag at all between monitors [19:04] R3dy, Hopefully they make it high priority :( [19:05] yes I agree, I very much was looking forward to trying 12.04 today [19:05] and was imediately disapointed [19:05] I am a pretty active user and have many many apps open at onse [19:05] my job requires me to move back and forth [19:05] so this issue is very near and dear to me [19:06] R3dy, Yeah, It think it's going to be a mess because of this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/923749 [19:06] Launchpad bug 923749 in unity (Ubuntu Precise) "New "push mouse offscreen" feature really difficult to get" [Critical,Triaged] [19:07] well at least with the ccsm settings you mentioned it is much more tolerable for me [19:07] I can at least wait for them to make a more permanent fix [19:07] Yeah, now if only we could get rid of the second launcher :P [19:08] well as I mentioned the second launcher goes away if you set it to auto hide [19:08] I still snag on it though [19:08] and then display on top left corner [19:08] yes still snag [19:08] but you don't have to look at it LOL [19:09] ah yeah, I autohide anyway need to have lots of terminal space =) [19:09] what do you do for a living that you use Ubuntu? [19:09] I'm a developer [19:09] python+django [19:10] cool cool [19:10] <- pentester [19:11] interesting! [19:28] google repos are definitely very slow [19:29] probably deliberate [19:29] I've got an error with my Precise iso... [19:29] I'm trying to use it as a package repository and it's saying: [19:30] W: Signature verification failed for: /media/Ubuntu 12.04 LTS i386/dists/precise/Release.gpg [19:31] can I tell apt-cdrom that gpg sig isn't necessary? [19:31] or where might I download the gpg key for that cdrom? [19:31] it's not the MD5SUM.gpg is it? [19:34] hello? anybody home? =P [19:49] nope [19:50] try the mailing list [19:52] algume can help me, how to put the site in java for ubuntu 4.12 [19:52] someone ? [19:52] please [19:53] I am not able to install the java here! [19:56] java? - openjdk is java... [19:57] do apt-cache search openjdk [19:57] in terminal [19:57] it'll tell you teh package name to use apt-get install with [19:58] Hi. I am having issues with installing Xubuntu 12.04 64bit Beta. The installer hangs up at user creation screen. Did anyone experience similar problem? [19:58] jdk is teh develpment version [19:59] codepal: requester already left the channel [19:59] ah, well, I'm in conference mode on xchat [19:59] sorry didn't notice [20:00] hi micahg o/ - hope the Beta release is going well for you! [20:01] tomasz1982, yes I did, I got around it by being very careful to use a clean hdd, so that the partitioner didn't need to be run.... [20:02] but I guess that's not very relevant [20:03] tomasz1982, user creation crashing, you probably want to create a bug report [20:03] So a leftover from previous Ubuntu install with Xfce could be causing problems? [20:03] tomasz1982, how did you upgrade? [20:04] I also have Debian 6.0 installed on another partition. All were sharing same /home directory (installed on separate partition of course). [20:04] I didn't. I am clreaning Ubuntu and Installing Xubuntu there. [20:04] tomasz1982, that's probably, obviously the problem [20:05] What do you suggest? Creating a backup? [20:05] tomasz1982, it's not standard to share /home like that - [20:05] tomasz1982, I'd ln -s just some parts of /home into the new users directory on Ubuntu 12 [20:05] whoops. I didn't know that. How should I do it then? [20:06] tomasz1982, do your normal user creation without linking /home from debian [20:07] tomasz1982, then ln -s /media/$debian$/home/$user$/.opera /home/$user$/ [20:07] When in April can we expect 12.04 ? [20:07] just using .opera as an example program to link configs for [20:07] heh, i was puzzled there for a moment, wondering how would you know I am using Opera :) [20:08] there are a whole bunch of configs that will conflict, especially the .config directory ones & .gnome2 [20:08] I'm an opera fanboi [20:08] wish they'd FOSS it [20:09] I wish it'd receive more attention ... anyway, creating a separate dir for a new user in /home would do the trick? [20:10] waxstone, I'd say the release schedule is gonna give you about as much info as the developers know [20:10] so the red text is a whisper? [20:10] tomasz1982, you know how to adduser at a terminal? [20:10] codepal, could you link me to that pplz [20:10] tomasz1982, cause that's the way I generally do it if things in gui aren't going well [20:11] codepal, or do you mean April is all we know [20:11] I have a book about Fedore I could check it there. [20:12] but the installer won't let me skip the make user screen, will it? [20:13] tomasz1982, setup opera with a custom search for http://linux.die.net/man/ [20:14] then use it to look up your cli stuff [20:14] you could also do man adduser in terminal of course [20:15] waxstone, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/ReleaseSchedule [20:15] codepal, thanks [20:15] waxstone, looks like april 26-28 [20:15] Hi. I can't use my second monitor. Any thoughts? [20:16] min|dvir|us1, sell it to somebody who actually needs it? [20:16] codepal, looks so :( [20:16] min|dvir|us1, or even better give it away! [20:17] min|dvir|us1, you probably want to be a bit more detailed about what the error is (if any).... [20:17] I'll give it a try. Thanks for your help, Codepal. [20:17] min|dvir|us1, dual monitor setup? [20:17] min|dvir|us1, also what drivers, system config, what version of ubuntu... [20:17] Hello, 12.04 users. I have a quick question: why can't I encrypt the Home Folder when I create a new user account? [20:17] tomasz1982, yw [20:18] There's no option for it. [20:18] orangecircle, that'd be a pretty big blocker... [20:19] orangecircle, you can do your oexwn encryption at startup using encyptfs [20:20] orangecircle, http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-encrypt-directories-partitions-with-ecryptfs-on-debian-squeeze [20:20] orangecircle, if you aren't very comfortable at the command -line you might want to find a gui solution [20:21] orangecircle, I'd suggest that the developers are still working on the encrypt users home feature [20:21] you might be able to find out the status of that using launchpad [20:22] codepal :: No, that's okay. I've got a pocket-sized phrasebook for Linux commands. I just thought it was weird that 12.04 doesn't show that option. [20:22] it's a beta ;-) [20:22] codepal :: That was my next thought. ;) [20:23] okie dokie then! time to go encrypt my new user account's home folder... [20:24] codepal: what information can I give you/ [20:24] *you? [20:25] Hum, how do I tell 'start' not to attempt connecting to upstart? Upgrading chroots doesn't work. [20:25] min|dvir|us1, what dual-monitor graphics card for a start? [20:26] How do I find out? [20:26] It's a laptop. [20:26] sysinfo / hardinfo are good [20:26] min|dvir|us1, lspci is even better [20:26] min|dvir|us1, your comfortable using a terminal? [20:26] codepal: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/563491/ [20:27] ah, so a GeForce, nice [20:28] nvidia drivers installed using proprietary driver thingy me bob? [20:28] codepal: Nope. Says nothing used by the system. [20:29] no proprietary drivers in use on this system message? [20:29] bummer [20:29] well, first do an apt-cache search nvidia [20:30] min|dvir|us1, that'll give you a list of nvidia stuff [20:30] min|dvir|us1, then do a google search for # nvidia dual monitor ubuntu [20:31] also a good idea to check the package you are going to install actually supports your particular GeForce [20:32] min|dvir|us1, check System Settings>additional Drives after updating your Ubuntu online [20:35] min|dvir|us1, you probably want to install nvidia-smi [20:35] min|dvir|us1, nvidia system management interface [20:36] and yeah, apt-get update && apt-get upgrade are all good before-hand [20:36] trippeh, why would you ever want to do that? [20:37] trippeh, did you attempt to upgrade via chroot? [20:40] codepal: Its a build chroot [20:40] Anyway, worked around it for now by editing the postinst in /var/lib/dpkg/info [20:40] trippeh, hacky, but glad you sorted it [20:41] I'll look into it more closer once this build has finished ;) [20:47] glosoli: hey oy [20:48] ppl check this one : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/951120 [20:48] Launchpad bug 951120 in pulseaudio (Ubuntu) "AirPlay - AirTunes (Airport Express) support stopped working on precise" [Undecided,New] [20:49] zzecool: lol, for AirPLay ? :DDDD [20:49] :D [20:49] it rocks [20:49] zzecool: I dont even have any Apple product [20:49] you must be kidding me [20:49] :DD [20:49] you dont need one [20:49] noob [20:49] do you have windows pc in your home ? [20:49] No [20:50] I don't :D [20:50] then you lost [20:50] :P [20:50] lol [20:50] zzecool: no I don't [20:50] why would I need windows pc If I have Ubuntu PC ? :D [20:50] search for shairport4w [20:50] I know what's AirPlay [20:50] :D [20:51] because if you want to make your Ubuntu an Airplay device ............ [20:51] its a total mess [20:51] for windows there is this nice app [20:51] that work miracles [20:52] I use to stream form my laptop music to the desktop over wifi using this [20:52] my Desktop is connected with logitech z5500 ;p [20:53] QT updates are on the way [20:55] glosoli: lol i just found metasploit for iphone [20:55] zzecool: well I don't need, I don't need tv :D [20:56] At the moment my tv displays 4 channels :D and that's enough for me, doesn't use it most of the times anyway :D [20:56] you said anything about tv? [20:57] zzecool: isn't airplay connected with tv somehow or I got misinformed ? ;D [20:57] no [20:57] an airplay device can be only for audio [20:57] or video + audio [20:57] aaa understand now [20:57] :) [20:58] wireless media center which can transfer information between devices [20:58] ? [20:58] how do i get webdav working with thunar? [20:59] no [20:59] airplay is a service [21:00] that is embedded in speakers , apple tv etc [21:00] so if a speaker has support for airplay [21:00] you can tranmit to them audio over wifi [21:00] :) [21:00] transmit* [21:01] You open you iphone and when you press play there is an icon next to it that let you select the airplay device as an output [21:02] You only need to have both devices to the same network [21:02] :) [21:04] glosoli: imagine that you have a sound system and your laptop and instead of play the music to the poor laptop speaker you play straight to the soundsystem over the air ;p [21:04] no cables no nothing [21:04] it rocks :) [21:04] apple is clever [21:05] zzecool: whatever, useless for man who doens'thave his own flat :D [21:05] ;/ [21:05] true [21:05] this doesnt work with parents [21:05] :D [21:05] Headphones work the best for your situation :P [21:06] zzecool: My parents live 300km away from me :DD [21:06] so ? [21:07] so I need heaphones not to keep silent from them :D [21:07] lol [21:07] true [21:08] anyway, hoping to win in a lottery soon to buy new laptop :DD [21:08] macbook ? ;p [21:09] ;DD [21:18] Hello, Alt+F4 doesn't work on ubuntu 12.04 beta1, I have upgraded from 10.04. any help please? [21:19] same for alt+tab [21:24] problem solved, shortcuts in the keyboard window under system settings has been reset. I will have to configure new shortcuts [21:34] Is anyone aware of issues with the network audio in Pulseaudio? I can't get 2 PP machines to detect each others' audio facilities over either LAN or VPN. [21:46] I am having problems with upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04 beta via the upgrade tool: [21:46] Could not calculate the upgrade [21:47] An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: [21:47] E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be [21:47] caused by held packages. [21:47] This can be caused by: [21:47] * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu [21:47] * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu [21:47] * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu [21:47] What can be wrong? [21:50] ZardoZ: you are doing exactly what is given as possible reasons - so thats to be expected now and then [21:53] I know and understand, is there a specific reason known yet? I might be able to work around it. [21:56] ZardoZ: I'm not really following, mostly those things are transient, try again in a few hours [21:57] ZardoZ: What package is it having trouble with? I had similar issues on 2 of my machines, and was easily able to repair them. [21:58] No info on specific packages, it's a generic error of the update-manager -d command and the do-release-upgrade command. [22:01] OK, change all instances of "lucid" with "precise" in all sources.lists, and do standard apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade, it should show the packges that cause the issues... [22:02] Ok, will do that. [22:02] Then, honestly, all I did to fix them was apt-get remove --purge && apt-get install , and it solved most of it. I also, always apt-get -f install after EACH AND EVERY update && upgrade, in this sort of situation... [22:03] You'll also have to make sure that you reinstall any packages that depend on the package causing the error, as it will uninstall them as well... [22:04] Tnx tekoholic. I am a Debian user since 2001. Have handled that kind of issues more than once... :-) [22:04] I did mine 4-6 weeks ago, as well, if that matters. I'm sure much has changed greatly, since then. [22:07] Hi. I can't get my dual-monitor setup working. Any thoughts? === stkrzysiak_ is now known as stkrzysiak [22:28] Does anyone know of a passwordword bug in the new beta?
