[16:00] Hi anybody home? [16:01] locodir-user: hi [16:02] Hi Im a noob looking for some help with ubuntu server setup. [16:02] How do I go about looking for advice? [16:03] locodir-user: for server stuff you're better of asking in #ubuntu-server [16:03] I did and asked question but no responses [16:04] locodir-user: busy channel [16:04] locodir-user: or the main channel #ubuntu [16:05] thanks but is there anyone local I can talk to just to get me going. Ive made some progress by myself. [16:05] locodir-user: i can help with some server questions [16:06] tdr112: thanks I got some specific serup questions which should be easy enough [16:07] Can I tell you the setup? [16:07] yep [16:08] ask away [16:08] i am doing other things too so wait for an answer [16:08] OK its a small windows workgroup used for training ECDL students. [16:09] I want to set up a Primary Domain Controller via samba (already working - kinda) and an email server which is my sticking point. [16:11] The lan never sees the internet - and never will . I want to set up postfix to work with Outlook on the students machines. [16:11] ok [16:11] I dont need a print server as the printers are network models already. [16:12] I got shares working so students can share files. [16:12] what's your postfix problem? [16:13] Mainly getting the domain names accepted [16:13] The documentation assumes I am connecting to the internet to read real MX records. [16:13] have you an entry in /etc/hosts on the server? [16:14] postfix will not need to lookup the mx, provided that it knows it is the server [16:14] I'm quite weak in this area so I am slavishly following the documentation] [16:14] what's in /etc/mailname [16:15] Yes but I can get to the point of sending emails to mbox and then to Maildir ok [16:15] Hang on I'll look [16:17] then you have done it [16:17] you realise that postfix does not provide imap/pop3? [16:17] you will need to install something like dovecot [16:19] OK mailname is = heritage.net [16:20] before you change anything, as i understand it you can send emails using SMTP and they go to the destination user's mailbox? [16:20] yes [16:21] so it works [16:21] I installed courier-pop [16:21] your postfix is fine [16:21] ok, i would have suggested dovecot - always got on better with that [16:22] ok getting past the next step is where im stuck [16:22] installed courier imap [16:23] OK I'll take off courier if it will help [16:23] i'm afraid i have no experience with courier imap [16:23] so dovecot then [16:24] I want the students to do ll the ECDL stuff which would mean imap [16:25] imap is fine [16:25] BW I gor apache going - a breeze [16:27] I want the teacher to be able to administer the email system. She will need a very simple interface. GUI of possible [16:27] to administer postfix and the imap daemon? [16:27] I'll go off and install dovecot and read up about it and come back [16:29] yes to administer the thing. I just want to set it up. When students rotate through the course we andt to purge the account and start again with a new account. [16:33] if you want to return the server to the original state, maybe you want to store a disk image [16:34] OK but tellme what can dovecot do that courier cannot? [16:35] i recommend dovecot over courier for the same reason why i would recommend postfix over sendmail [16:35] BTW the server i'm using is just an old thing made up from spare parts. using Putty from win xp to control it. [16:36] I dont care as it is a training machine for me. The actual server will be set up when i get my knowledge up. [16:37] dovecot is ime far easier to work with [16:38] OK. Well I'm out of time for the moment. Can I come back later when I got dovecot installed. [16:39] there's a web gui for managing postfix addresses i think [16:39] thought that's mostly for doing things like adding new aliases, rather than the whole imap/postfix/etc stack [16:39] (i.e. i dunno if it'll remove the actual emails etc) [16:40] Ooh that is somthing I will need. Can it be run from windows. the teacher does not know linux and has never used command line. [16:41] The teacher will just want to add new accounts and delete old ones. Maybe not even delete old ones as I can do that myself occasionally. [16:45] http://postfixadmin.sourceforge.net/ look at this? [16:45] should work over the web [16:48] Thanks ebel I will check it out. I gotta go. Thanks everyone. I'll be back again with a proper irc client later to continue the adventure. [16:48] All the best. [16:48] No problem. Drop in any time, if you have questions [16:49] Thanks bye. [20:45] good evening [20:58] hey [21:16] hi tdr112 [21:16] sorry about that [21:17] I managed to disable unity while messing with compiz settings. [21:17] funny when you are confronted with a blank screen [23:14] How do you create a samba share so the webmaster can own the website but other domain users cannot see it. [23:14] The web guy will be using windows [23:40] davem_: might know but he's not here
