[19:36] I am designing a brochure for a client using microsoft, How would I save it in a power point type format. And can gimp edit and create PDF's like adobe or is it compatible? [19:38] CFHowlett: Do you know much? [19:38] BlueWolf gimp can output pdf's [19:39] as far as ppt format... i THINK libreoffice can do that with Impress [19:40] blueWolf editing a pdf is something I rarely do, but I seem to recall having much better luck with inkscape ... [19:54] there are pdf printers.. you hit print, and a pdf comes out of whatever BlueWolf [19:55] BlueWolf: you'll need to ask in some channel like #windows about saving powerpoints in office... i have only used libre/open office and google docs [19:55] I dont want to print [19:55] BlueWolf: correct [19:55] it wont *actually* print [19:55] it will show up as a printer [19:55] it will be called "pdf printer" [19:56] you hit print and select that pdf printer, and you get a pdf, instead of anything *actually* printing out on paper [19:56] like cute pdf printer for windows [19:56] anyways, thats just one solution that'll get you a pdf from *anything* system wide that has print functionality [19:58] holstein I had forgotten that. :) [19:58] yeah, its handy [19:58] Thanks Dude :D I have seen the light...... [19:58] though, i usually use the pdf export functions [20:36] holstein: What are the expert functions? [20:38] Hello. I'm trying to get my Native Instruments Audio 4 DJ external soundcard working properly on Ubuntu 11.10. The device has 2 input and 2 output channels. The device is recognized by ALSA and is working, but I can only use the first input and the first output channel. I need to use the second output channel. The file /proc/asound/pcm has the following line "01-00: Audio 4 DJ : Audio 4 DJ : playback 2 : capture 2". So ALSA is recogniz [20:38] ing th [20:38] at there are 2 ins and outs. (as opposed to "00-00: ALC269VB Analog : ALC269VB Analog : playback 1 : capture 1" for example). [20:38] Some have already figured out how to get the Audio 4 DJ working properly with specific applications. I'm not sure how to interpret their solutions to fix my problem, but I think it can be fixed using their method. http://ywwg.com/wordpress/?p=772 [20:38] BlueWolf: "export".. like in the program itself, it there is an export to pdf function, thats what i prefer [20:38] rndmnck: i would just fire up JACK and point it at it [20:39] rndmnck not the busiest channel but more likely that you'll actually find a fellow musician or someone with this experience. I think openmusicians also has an irc channel. [20:39] im about to be busy for a bit, or id help you get it running [20:39] I'm a noob :( [20:39] try #opensourcemusicians [20:39] OH.. or CFHowlett ! [20:39] CFHowlett: glad you're here :) [20:39] holstein: How do I fire up Jack? :( [20:40] holstein: Thanks hey [20:40] holstein yeah, I invited him. Sadly, my presonus 1box worked out of the box, so I never had the lovely experience he's having. [20:40] rndmnck terminal [20:40] The program 'jack' is currently not installed. [20:40] rndmnck jackd is the command [20:41] not installed either, can be found in the packages jackd1 and jackd2. which should I install? [20:41] rndmnck wait 1 [20:42] version of ubuntu [20:42] ? [20:42] 11.10 [20:42] rndmnck the easiest way to get everything is to install the ubuntustudio audio packages. [20:44] rndmnck sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-audo [20:45] also sudo apt-get install linux-rt [20:45] audo is not a typo? [20:45] *audio* [20:45] okay [20:45] you'll need to reboot with the rt kernel for jack to work [20:45] installing ubuntustudio-audio now [20:46] also might want to install medibuntu and ubuntu-restricted-extras for all the various codecs [20:47] rndmnck fair warning = there is one HECK of a lot of stuff devoted to ubuntustudio audio! Be prepared to have fun and learn a lot. [20:47] rndmnck bookmark: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ubuntu%20Studio%20Upgrade%20from%20Ubuntu [20:49] Configuring jackd2 "Enable realtime process priority?" [20:49] yes [20:49] okay [20:53] still installing, will take a couple of minutes. [20:56] done [20:57] holstein: So how should I now "point JACK at it"? [20:57] or maybe CFHowlett [21:02] rndmnck you installed all the UStudio and the rt kernel? [21:03] rndmnck: i would literally open qjackctl, and see that it is using that alsa device, start it, and use it [21:03] which is *not* trivial [21:03] i usually suggest using the command... [21:03] gksudo qjacktl [21:03] for troubleshooting [21:03] holstein does he need to reboot into RT kernel for that? [21:03] doesnt *need* to [21:03] not anymore [21:03] i would just use the generic one for now [21:04] OR, dont use JACK at all [21:04] rndmnck: you can install pavucontrol [21:04] sudo apt-get install pavucontrol [21:04] and that will allow some JACK-like routing to certain applications and different sound devics [21:04] devices* [21:04] OR, go in the bios, and disable all other sound devices [21:04] OR black list them [21:05] gtg again... [21:08] I'm in pavucontrol now, but I can't see any improvement yet. [21:09] If I go to "Input Devices" there's just one input channel with a Left and Right volume control. [21:10] same for the output [21:14] rndmnck is your device plugged in?? [21:14] yes [21:14] have you rebooted since installing the audio packages? [21:14] if not, please do and boot the RT kernel.. [21:15] "unable to locate package linux-rt" [21:15] linux [space]-rt [21:16] nope [21:16] I was wrong it IS linux-rt [21:16] "sudo apt-get install linux-rt" is not working, neither is "[...] install linux -rt" [21:17] rndmnck per holstein rt is no longer required... [21:18] okay, should I still reboot? And what will JACK actually do to make the second output channel accesible? [21:18] I'm still on 10.04 sorry. Reboot sudo apt-get updates && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade [21:19] jack allows granular control and direction of inputs and outpus [21:19] *outputs* [21:19] okay, brb rebooting [21:24] CFHowlett: back [21:24] So what should I do now? [21:26] rndmnck see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMz6fDGBnA4 [21:26] and http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/friends-jack [21:28] I'll look into those [21:29] I've never had to use jack so IDK more to tell than I'm pretty sure it's the tool you want. [21:29] also http://jackaudio.org/ [21:42] I don't think this is what I am looking for. [21:43] I want my PC to send audio to the physical output Channel B on my external soundcard (Audio 4 DJ). [21:44] The problem is that although my PC recognizes that the Audio 4 DJ has 2 physical output channels, it only gives one output option. [21:44] and that option is Channel A instead of B. [21:49] CFHowlett [21:50] hey [21:55] rndmnck: theres no linux-rt package as of now [21:55] where was in 10.04.. it was the package from 9.10 carried on [21:56] if you feel you *need* RT, you can use a ppa [21:56] i suggest *actually* trying the *-generic, then the *-lowlatency, then the *-rt ones [21:56] https://launchpad.net/~abogani/+archive/ppa [21:57] JACK is likely overkill for your needs [21:57] and RT is likely as well overkill [21:57] i like to use the command... [21:57] gksudo qjackctl [21:57] thats how i start configuring JACK [21:57] if JACK runs as root (only temproarily) then i know any further issues are not kernel/config related [21:58] they are *all* permissions errors [21:58] and i can stop messing about with kernels and configs and check the user group rights and permisssions [21:59] i also attribute *all* of my expertise in these matters to the good folks at #opensourcemusicians
