GridCubei want to create a launcher for a fullscreen game, warzone2100, i want to run it on a secondary xserver so from a terminal i use  "sudo xinit /usr/games/warzone2100 %U -- :1" this efectively launchs the game on a secondary xserver, but when i create a launcher for it i used, as i though it would be the best way a gksu instead of a simple sudo, but i get this error:  "this program could not be launched as root"00:48
GridCube"it was impossible to copy the xautorization for the user"00:48
GridCubesomeone has a clue?00:52
Unit193With xinit, I'd think that'd be a sudo moment.00:53
GridCubebecause that would create a new xserver so i can ctrl-alt-f* from the game and the desktop00:54
GridCubeusing a sudo and an open on terminal gives me this:00:55
GridCubeServer is already active for display 000:55
well_laid_lawnI don't need sudo to start a second xserver00:56
Unit193Nevermind then.00:57
well_laid_lawnxinit `which startfluxbox` -- :100:57
GridCubeX: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting.00:58
GridCubewell...00:59
GridCubei cant use gksu whatsoever00:59
GridCube>No se pudo copiar el archivo Xautorization del usuario.01:00
GridCubeD:01:00
GridCubei cant even launch gksu synaptic01:00
GridCubethis is bad01:00
GridCubethis is really really bad01:02
well_laid_lawn!gksu01:04
ubottuIf you need to run graphical applications as root, use « gksudo », as it will set up the environment more appropriately. Never just use "sudo"! (See http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/graphicalsudo to know why)01:04
well_laid_lawnI wonder if lightdm has messed with permissions01:06
well_laid_lawnls -l /usr/bin/X01:06
well_laid_lawnlrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Jan 30 01:42 /usr/bin/X -> Xorg01:07

well_laid_lawnok cheers01:07
GridCube:D01:09
GridCubefixed it01:09
GridCuberenamed my .Xautorithy file and rebooted so it craeted a new one01:09
GridCubeand now the gksu ask for my password and lanches a new server01:09

Sysixubuntu-desktop is a metapackage which is safe to remove08:51

Sysiif you're using nautilus you need to use gconf-editor gnome-tweak-tool or something to set it to not take over the desktop08:51

monserwhat is the package for setting up keyboard shortcuts for switching between different keyboard layouts?11:20
Sysixfce4-xkb-plugin IIRC11:21
SysiI'm not sure how muvh bugs it has nowdays11:21
Sysithere might be alternative ways11:21
baizonmonser: http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel-plugins/xfce4-xkb-plugin11:21
baizon!package xfce4-xkb-plugin11:22
Sysi!info xfce4-xkb-plugin11:22

monseris there a way to have pure xfce without any gnome libraries?11:24
well_laid_lawn!purexfce11:25
ubottuIf you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce »11:25
Sysiif you need/want *really* clean, do minimal installation from alternate cd or mini.iso and install what you need (with aptitude -R)11:26
monserunfortunately aptitude is for geeks.there is no way to find out how to use it.you just need to know what to press on the keyboard .11:30
monserI looked for a tutorials how to use it, but did not find anything.there are for irssi, but no for aptitude11:30
monserwhere can i get that mini.iso you mentioned?11:31
well_laid_lawn!minimal11:31
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want (the installer is like the one on the !Alternate CD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD11:31
well_laid_lawn!install11:32
ubottuUbuntu can be installed in lots of ways. Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation for documentation. Problems during install? See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CommonProblemsInstall - Don't want to use a CD? See http://tinyurl.com/3exghs - See also !automate11:32
Sysimonser: you mean the ncurses "GUI"? that's magic, I mean like "aptitude -R install package"11:37
monseri wanted to use the aptitude and the whole system just got messed up.it started to install , then delete things in the background.Yeah I'm talking about ncurses. Those people who write that application , they wrote it only for themselfs. How do they expect someone who does not know anything to use it? vi editor is the same thing.Fortunately wise, really wise people created nano11:39
monserlet's hope that there will be wise people to rewrite aptitude11:40
Sysivi is quite simple, you just need to know/remember couple things. I bet there's good manual for aptitude too11:41
Sysibut aptitude is as simple as apt-get when used similarly11:44

ircnode0interesting, I executed gnome-terminal command, but nothing appeared?12:51
ircnode0yesterday gnome-terminal command worked12:51
TheSheepircnode0: xubuntu doesn't have gnome-terminal installed by default12:53
ircnode0TheSheep: gnome-terminal found in /usr/bin/12:59
TheSheepircnode0: apparently you installed it13:00
ircnode0TheSheep: nope, my school installed it.13:00
ThePendulumYour school uses Xubuntu?13:00
ircnode0I think ubuntu, but it have xfce4 in option13:01
ThePendulumThen they probably installed Ubuntu and installed Xfce4 on Ubuntu, which is a tad lame13:01
ircnode0so student can choose their favorite desktop => they won't get complains :)13:03
ThePendulumI never heard of a school that let the students choose, besides schools that allow students to bring their own machines13:04
TheSheepThePendulum: we always let the students choose, there was always gnome, kde and windowmaker13:04
TheSheepand later xfce, when it appeared13:05
ircnode0yes, but if there is computer in school, they don't need to buy or bring any laptop13:06
ircnode0I think I should omit "if"13:06
ThePendulumMost schools I know simply install something and make students use that, otherwise it's pretty damned hard to teach something now isn't it?13:06
ThePendulumAny... I have some .mkv movies and I'd like to put them on DVD13:07
ThePendulumSome suggest 'Devede', but it doesn't seem to support MKV13:07
ThePendulumNvm, I figured out the issue13:08
ThePendulumThe software looks for the .mkv extension, but they're not present because that's unnessecary on Linux13:08

knomeanybody have ideas on laptop brightness troubleshooting?14:38
knomefn-keys won't work, how can i check if i can tweak brightness at all? some websites suggests i should update the bios, but i'm unwanting to do that if i can avoid it by any means14:39
Sysiscreen brightness panel plugin14:45
Sysi"setpci screen brightness" on google14:45
knomeSysi, setpci doesn't seem to work :/14:50
Sysisounds bad, assuming you got it right14:50
knomei did, i checked the right pci device with lspci14:51
lurohknome: some laptops need special acpi drivers. if those drivers for some reason aren't present or don't work, it might be worth trying to boot with acpi=off14:53
knomebooting, brb14:57
knomeluroh, if i set acpi=off, wireless stops working. any more ideas? ;)15:14
lurohbut, did your brightness buttons start working?15:14
knomeyeah, they did15:15
lurohi didn't say i wouldn't break everything else ;D15:15
knomemm-hmm.15:15
lurohok, so your problem seems to be acpi driver related, that's something at least15:16
Sysibios update actually could help15:16
lurohjust curious, what model is it?15:16
knomeluroh, hp 6735s15:17
lurohah, yeah, hp is known to do some vendor specific acpi stuff15:17
Sysiyou should try as new kernel as possible, at least if machine is new15:18
lurohsee if you can get hold of a changelog for any newer bios version, it might give a clue15:19
knomeSysi, machine is not new, but i have 12.0415:19
